Maria's POV

As we drove home, Andrew and I never said a word to each other.

It was starting to look like a breathing competition. We couldn't stare at each other in the eyes after what happened.

Andrew understood the assignment and knew I needed to be left alone

And the kids? They won't be disturbing me with their unnecessary demands.

Fortunately for me, Patty was there to put them to satisfy their cravings. I don't know what I could have done without her presence.

We finally got home after a fifteen-minute ride. The relief I felt that can't be explained.

I could only think of one thing; heading inside my sturdy to reflect on everything that has happened in the last couple of minutes.

"Please don't go yet.

I wanna have a word with you," Andrew whispered to me when he realized I was making plans to leave.

“Mom, aren't you coming with us?” Timmy asked me after he saw me stay back inside the car when everyone was out.

He's the most inquisitive among his brothers. The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, so they said.

Timmy reminds me so much of Ethan. The face, charisma, attitude, and resilience all scream “Ethan,”

It's safe to say that Timmy is Ethan's reincarnation. If they were of the same age, they would pass as doppelgängers.

“No son, I'll be with you shortly. Uncle Andrew and I want to have an adult conversation. Patty will give you whatever you want,” I told Timmy after a brief silence.

I wasn't expecting such a question from him. I thought he was gonna leave with his brothers.

Immediately, I referred to Andrew as Timmy's Uncle. I noticed the look on Andrew's face, and I could tell that he wasn't pleased with my use of words.

A thousand times, he has pleaded with me to have legal custody of the kids, but I refused.

I turned down his offer for a moment like this, which has finally arrived.

“Can I be part of the conversation, Mom? I love to be around Uncle Andrew,” Timmy insisted.

At age 3, he's still stubborn like his Father.

“One second, please,”

I told Andrew before stepping outside because I didn't see Patty doing the job.

She wouldn't want to apply the force on Timmy, knowing that It may get me upset.

With a calm heart, I bent to Timmy's height and held him close.

I kissed his forehead while I muttered the words of assurance. “Don't worry, Hun. Mommy will join you shortly. I promise to be back before your bird time,”

I needed to lie just to dismiss him.

I don't see Timmy leaving like that without a fight.

“Okay. Mom.

I love you.” He kissed my forehead and voluntarily followed Patty to the house without grudges.

I let out a little sigh and prepared myself before returning to the impatient Andrew inside the car.

I didn't celebrate too early when I saw Timmy leave after several failed attempts.

How can my heart be filled with Joy when I know that there's a pending score that needs to be settled with Andrew?

“You asked me to stay back. I'm here now. What do you want to talk about?” I asked Andrew while I folded my arms like a serpent that was about to change its skin.

He looked at me in the eyes and said. “Not relevant anymore. Let's go join the kids inside,”

I find his response quite absurd.

It wasn't enough to pretend that he had a lot to discuss with me; he still attempted to abandon me inside the car.

I pulled him back immediately.

Unfortunately for him, he had no idea that I was miles away. I knew his next move even before they were made.

“You're going to pretend like you don't have anything to say? This isn't you, Andrew.” I told him.

“Fine! I will speak,” he spoke in a placating tone for the very first time since we got married.

And all of this happened the moment Ethan resurfaced into my life again like a thief at night.

I pretend not to be pained by his mannerisms. I was curious to know what he had to say.

“So we all are going to pretend like you didn't refer to me as Timmy's Uncle?

When are you going to start addressing me as their Father?” Andrew spilled without leaving a stone.

I facepalm. “Oh, shit, I knew you were going to say this,”

I already saw that coming.

It feels to me like a Déjà vu.

“Andrew, can we not talk about this now? You already know what's at stake.

The last thing I want for myself right now is unnecessary stress, and that's what you are doing to me now,” I lamented but in a low tone.

I didn't want Patty or the kids to walk in us arguing like ladies.

“So you mean?” Andrew stuttered at every attempt to speak.

The words suddenly became too heavy for his mouth.

He acted as though he were being threatened at gunpoint not to speak.

So typical of Andrew.

He's a man of few words. He might be hurting inside and still be dying calm.

To him, the best way to express his anger and grief. That was the major difference between him and Ethan.

Ethan would have yelled the shit out of me or probably punch me in the face.

Seeing Andrew in that mood, it dawned on me that I needed to apologize to him.

I got closer to him and kissed him on the lips. That has been the remedy each time I got him upset.

“I am sorry.

It's just that…" I was about to speak when we heard someone banging at the gate aggressively.

The constant hard knock drifted our attention and forced us to come to an agreement.

“Are you expecting anyone?”

Andrew asked me.

“I don't think so.

Let's go find out,” I told Andrew.

Sadly, he kicked against my decision

“I can't let you go outside like that,

It's not safe out there.

What if they're hired assassins?

We should call the cops immediately,” Andrew suggested as he held me closer to him.

What a rollercoaster of a night it has been for us.

Some few minutes ago, we both acted like we despised each other.

Now we are acting as if we can't do without each other.

CHAPTER 10 Maria's POV “You want us to call the cops on someone we aren't aware of? Cut me some slack, Andrew. This ain't Hollywood. Fuck the cops and let's go check who's that,” I told Andrew while turning down his suggestion. The sad face he put up shows that he wasn't pleased that I didn't follow his command but who cares? I'm all about my instincts. I wasn't going to let Andrew play the lead role in my life when I was old enough to make certain decisions for myself. As I stepped outside the vehicle, I checked behind me and noticed that Andrew was following my trail. “Don't worry, just go. I got this,” Andrew assured me. We were like super crime fighter couples. Situations like this only happen in the movies. As we strode quietly to the gate, we met with the security who was fast asleep. Andrew and I shared a telling look. It's obvious that the same thing for Security. Another loud knock was heard on the gate that forced the security off his position. The m

Maria's POVIf Andrew hadn't consented, I wouldn't have allowed that insult from Susan like a hard pill.“I don't know if your ears have been infected by a deadly virus, but you need to understand this. I'm Naomi Jackson. This is going to be the last time I'll talk about it. Lastly, you have three minutes left.” I warned Susan.I lost count of how many times I've done that already. She probably feigned deaf ears to trigger my anger. I guess it's working already.“Why are you running away from the past like a coward that you are? Don't you wanna talk about it?” Susan got on my nerves again.I struggled to breathe. My hands were yearning to strangle Susan's neck, but I moaned to control them.I ignored Susan's shenanigan while I concentrated on Andrew. He's the reason I am in the mess. "If you don't call her to order, I will be forced to kick her out. And trust me, there's nothing you or anyone can do about that,“ I told Andrew while I went to an isolated corner. I folded my arms

  • Secrets and Second Chances    CHAPTER 1: The day hope died

MARIA'S POV I raced up the stairs, my heart dancing with every step. Three years, three long years of cold, empty marriage, and now, finally, I had a reason to hope. I was pregnant. I could hardly breathe as I imagined the look on Ethan's face. Maybe, just maybe, this baby would change everything. Maybe it could make him see me and love me so much. Though he did, it was just a little, and ever since we got to the third year of our marriage, he started behaving so distant. I burst through the door, my cheeks flushed with excitement. But as soon as I stepped inside I heard muffled voices. I paused. My smile froze on my lips. I shook my head, pushing the doubt away. No, this was a happy day. But when I opened the door to our bedroom, my world shattered. There he was. Ethan, my husband was on the couch with a woman sitting casually across his lap like she belonged there. Her lips pressed against his, their bodies entwined as if I didn't exist. "Ethan!" I

Maria's POV "Come back here”. I heard a voice say behind me just when I was almost out of the house. A shiver ran down my spine and my legs felt so weak that I couldn't turn around. I already knew who had that voice; it was no other person but Ethan. His voice was ice cold and dripping with so much venom. "What did you just say?" he asked me, and before I could speak, he raised his finger in warning. “Don't even try to lie." I swallowed hard, sweat beads forming on my head, and I glanced up at Susan, who had her arms folded across her chest with a sly smile on her lips. I had wanted to leave peacefully without any trouble but now I guess that peace was far from me. "She threatened me, Ethan," Susan said, and in seconds, she was already beside him, holding his arms and casting a hateful glance my way. I felt so small, so insignificant my life had changed in just a few minutes. "She threatens to kill me, Ethan," Susan said, and without even waiting for confirmation, Ethan's

Maria’s POV Being unconscious was something which I had come to cherish and I didn't wish to wake up to this cruel world. I wanted to die. I opened my eyes wearily and glanced at the white ceiling which was a stark contrast to my room. I tried to get up and mad pain protested through me, breaking down every strength I had left. My whole body felt numb and weak and I couldn't even lift a finger. I must have been unconscious for a long time as I glanced to my left, there was a machine beside my bed beeping. I tried to sit up, but I couldn't; the pain was too much, and tears were brimming in my eyes. The only thing I could remember was that Susan had pushed me and that was it, the darkness closing in on me. I was half aware of my surroundings, and I tried to call for help, but my tongue lay limp and dry in my mouth. I heard a door open faintly, and someone walked in, but I just couldn't make out the figure. I felt someone touch my hands, my vision was blurry and I felt like

He had every reason to believe that Maria was playing a fast one on him.Deep down, he was hoping that the cameramen would emerge from their hidden place and say. “It's a prank. Maria's POV Some say before you die, you see your life flash before your eyes while you do nothing about it. In my case, it was fundamentally different. My heart stopped pumping blood as I died a thousand times from the inside. The imaginary death occurred when Timmy popped the question in the presence of Ethan. The son of a bitch wouldn't take his eyes off me. He paid attention as if his life depended on it while he waited for me to respond. I was grateful for Timmy's tiny voice, which made it difficult for the audience to grasp what he said. I looked clueless and helpless, hoping the ground would engulf me so I could be safe from the dilemma. “No, son. He isn't your father. And he can never be your father,” I told Timmy, my son. My response shattered Ethan's heart to shreds, and he was sweaty despite the air conditioner being on. Before that moment, I wasn't a staunch advocate for dishonesty. I've always taught my sons not to lie, but today, I had no choice
