Scarlett's POV
Flashback September 07, 2021 "Trust me when I say this club is legit—good music, vibes—it has it all. You wouldn't be thinking about anything else, especially not Oliver the moment you step into it," Vera said. “I’m so glad you’re back in town, Vera.” She had been out of town for business and I’m glad she’s back now. We stepped into the club, and bright lights spun around, giving it a playful glow to the dancing crowd. Laughter and music filled the air; let's not forget the smell of cigarettes, sweat, and alcohol too. As the night took on a carefree atmosphere. I found myself swaying to the beat, as the effects of a few drinks began to kick in and take hold of my mind and body. This made me even forget that I had just gone through a breakup. In the midst of my celebration, my eyes landed on a handsome stranger across the room. Our eyes locked. “That guy is totally checking you out!!!” Vera yelled over. “I think it’s time to have fun.” I walked over to him, feeling an inflow of warmth come over me, both from the alcohol in my system and from the handsome stranger who was already staring at me. As I approached him, he faced me, his gentle blue eyes dazzling with a shared sense of mischief. "Care to dance?" he asked playfully as if he was also drunk too. I giggled, feeling a rush of boldness from the alcohol. "I would love to." As we moved together on the dance floor, our bodies swayed with the beat. “You have such funny dance moves,” we both laughed. “Is that your way of flattering?” I laughed barely understanding what I was saying. With each spin, my consciousness melted away, and we found ourselves lost in a carefree embrace. “We’re so wasted!!” I yelled over the music. “That isn’t so bad now, is it?” We laughed, and I couldn’t help but notice his strong facial features; he looked so good. He leaned in closer, his warm breath caressing my ear. "You have the most beautiful smile," he whispered, sending shivers down my spine as his murmurs tantalized my senses. “And you have a way with words," I responded. "Would you like to take this upstairs?" I smiled as he whispered seductively in my ear. "Upstairs?" I ask, and he nods. Despite being skeptical, I gave in to the heedless abandon of the moment, my drunken self was just too carried away to say no. We started to make out immediately we got into one of the rooms, and he lifted me off the ground so swiftly. "I want you so bad right now," he whispers with his lips still on mine, and I suck in a sharp breath as he starts to undress me. I don't know if this has anything to do with the alcohol, but this felt good. He starts sucking on my neck, making me let out a soft moan. I could feel the smile he had on his face. "I love that," he whispers against my neck. The rest of the evening was a blur to me. I had an excruciating headache, waking up the following day. I turned to the stranger's side, he was fast asleep. I quickly got dressed and left quietly. “Seems like you had a great night,” I jumped at the sound of Vera’s voice “You scared me,” I said with my hand on my chest, emphasizing the scare and she let out a laugh. “So where were you last night? I looked everywhere for you,” she said, giving me a look that says ‘I know what you did last night.’ “Get off my case Vera,” I said, struggling to take off my shoes. My head was still killing me. “Do we have any painkillers left? My head is literally banging so bad,” I said “If you swear to tell me everything, I'll get you the pills and make you some jasmine tea.” I just nodded my head, trying not to drag this any further. PRESENT DAY APRIL 2024 “Mom, do I really have to do this? What about Sapphire? can’t she be the one getting married?” I asked Mom, as I followed her into the kitchen. “Sapphire? Really now, Scarlett, when was the last time you saw or talked to Sapphire?” she asked me, but no response came to mind. “That’s what I thought,” and she walked out of the kitchen again, with me trailing behind her like a tail. “But you’re making me get married to a man I know nothing of, what if he abuses me, or even worse, what if he’s a murderer?” I tried to make my point. “Life isn’t like the dumb books you read and write, you’ll marry Ethan Donovan,” she responded dismissively. “I will not, why is this even so important to the both of you? What if I get killed in that marriage? what would happen!” I yelled at her. “You would not talk to me without manners, young lady, do you even know why this is so important to us? We are bankrupt, we are losing everything we own.” That isn’t possible, Dad never mentioned anything like that, it has to be a lie. “No, you’re lying” “So it’s either you put a stop to your childish act and do as we say or you watch our family lose everything we own and even the respect we have in society and watch your father and I disown you just like we did to your sister because if all of this happens, it’ll be your fault.” She sounded so angry. “You disowned Sapphire?” My voice quivered. I had no idea, she had simply just stopped visiting home for the holidays and stopped communicating with everyone. “Scarlett, at this point you have the freedom to decide what you want, but know this, if you let our family's name get tarnished, just be sure you’ll regret it.” “Do you prefer your societal status to the happiness of your children?” I knew the answer. “Yes, I do” “You’re a terrible mother.” I picked up my things and angrily stormed out of the house.Ethan’s POV I walked into my hotel building and headed for my suite. My best friend Oliver, who was sipping on a drink at the minibar, laughed when he saw me. “You called that witch to get married out of the blue, what the fuck man!” “That old geezer gave me no choice, Oliver. I figured if I married Luna first, my marriage to anyone else would be void since bigamy is illegal in New York. But grandfather was literally waiting at the bureau before I got there, like he knew my plans.” And Oliver burst out laughing again. “I’m sorry, Ethan; you know what he’s capable of, and you wouldn’t blame him; you’re quite popular with the reporters. They even recently said you’re gay. Marrying Luna after your parents arranged someone else for you would have given them more things to gossip about if they found out.” “Hmpf,” I scoffed. “Like I give a fuck. Well, now I just have to make that bride back out like the rest.” “Relax, man, you just got your grandfather’s approval on Project Brazi
Scarlett’s POV It had barely been two weeks since the arranged marriage with Ethan, and when he told me the other day that marriage was going to be hell for me, he wasn’t joking. Every day since the wedding has been from one hooker to the other, he doesn’t even respect the fact that he doesn’t stay alone anymore. He brings these girls home and doesn’t even try to be quiet; they would be so loud to the extent that I could hear everything that goes on in his room. The thought alone has me feeling nauseous. I found myself sitting in the confines of our dimly lit living room once again, another night to feel disrespected by my dear husband, Mr Ethan. I waited for him because I just wouldn’t be able to sleep if I didn’t know if he was home or not. It’s not love; that’s just how I am, and I’ll do it for literally anyone. As Ethan stumbled through the doorway, his eyes unfocused. In his arms, yet another woman clung to him, their laughter mingling with the present anger in my heart. Hi
Scarlett’s POV With my heart pounding, I dashed out into the hallway and saw Ethan trembling on the floor; his eyes had rolled backward. I heard the front door slam shut as the blonde girl he’d brought home was nowhere to be found; she had fled the scene already. I leaned beside Ethan, feeling a wave of fury and concern sweep over me. "Ethan, what's happening to you?" I asked calmly, trying not to panic so I wouldn't scare him. He couldn't respond as he was still trembling, and by this time, frothing from the mouth. I knew this wasn’t child's play, so I quickly dialed 911. “911 here, what's your emergency, please?” a male dispatcher's calm voice answered. “Oh God…. Something terrible is happening to my husband! Please save him.” I panicked, choking on my words. “Ma’am, I need to help you, but to do that, you must be calm and speak clearly, okay? What is happening to your husband?” “My husband is frothing and trembling, his eyes are rolled backward; please help.” I begged wh
Scarlet’s POV I slowly regained consciousness, protecting my eyes from the light. Immediately after I opened them, my head started spinning, and I felt nauseous. What happened?“Doctor, she's awake!” I hear Vera’s voice. “Scarr, are you alright? Do you need anything?” She kept asking me tons of questions that I didn’t even have time to answer. She looked so worried and scared that I couldn’t help but let out a little laugh because that was so unlike Vera. My throat was a little too dry, my laughter soon turned into uncontrollable coughs, and Vera rushed to get me a cup of water. A doctor walked in with Mr Donovan trailing behind her, he looked so relieved. How long was I even out for?“How are you feeling now, Mrs Donovan?” she said, coming closer to me, trying to examine my head, and holding my eyes open, one after the other. “I’m fine, what happened?” I asked, sitting up. I felt okay; to be honest, it didn’t even hurt anywhere, and I wasn't feeling sick either.“You passed ou
Scarlett’s POV “Oliver, you came.” Mrs Donovan went over to hug him while his eyes were fixed on me. We were both at loss for words. What is happening? What is Oliver doing here? of all places to be, how do they know who he was? “I had to, Ethan called,” he said. The entire time his eyes were still on mine, I couldn’t quite comprehend my feelings presently. It was like I was in a dream, everyone around me became invincible and I could only see Oliver, the man who shattered my heart and tormented my dreams for weeks. He was here, standing in front of me for the first time in two years. I was finally able to look away. I looked at Vera in the corner, and she had the same expression as I did. Everyone in the room felt the unspoken tension between us. “You two know each other?” Mr Donovan decided to break the silence. “Oh no, no,” Oliver quickly said, before I could even respond, his eyes never leaving my face. “Excuse me” I had to excuse myself, I needed space to breathe. I
Scarlett’s POV An orderly walked in, she looked a bit old. For the first time since Oliver dragged me into this room, I’m just noticing that it’s a supply room. The orderly gave us a nasty look. Dying of embarrassment, I stormed out of the room. I could hear Oliver’s heavy footsteps behind me. “Scarlett, wait,” he said, grabbing my arm and on impulse, the next thing that followed was my hand again…..I slapped him. “Two slaps in under 30 minutes; you've become a fighter,” he chuckled, massaging his cheek. “I think you should leave,” I said, looking away from him with my hand crossed on my chest. “I’d leave, but you'd keep seeing me, you're married to my friend, remember?” “Like I said before, it was nice seeing you again,” he added with a smile before walking away. I went to the cafeteria to get coffee for Veronica and walked back to Ethan’s hospital room. I noticed Ethan was already getting dressed to leave the hospital. “What took your time, honey, and where’s Oli
Scarlett’s POV “What’s the meaning of this nonsense?! Ethan roared, his face contorted in rage. “Do you realize that you’re causing an unnecessary scene here? Have some decorum, will you?” He glared at me and turned to look around. What! Why is he only looking at me? What about her? “Now go upstairs,” he said to me. “But I—” “Upstairs!” He cut me off. “No! She has to leave first.” I folded my arms on my chest. He let out a long sigh, using his fingers to massage his forehead. More of the workers had gathered at the scene, moving around. He turned to Luna. “You leave.” “You can’t be serious, Ethan.” The shock was evident in her voice. “When have you ever known me to be a joker, Luna? Leave now; I need to rest.” “Come on, Ethan, you want to push me away because of this gold-digging slut?” “What!?” I stepped closer to her. “Repeat that,” I urged. “Gold digging sl—” I didn’t wait for her to finish before I smacked her nose. It’s one thing for Ethan to disrespec
Scarlett’s POV “You both, get down and move away from the windows now,” Ethan yelled to Maria and me. Immediately I heard the window glass shattering; the air was filled with the acrid smell of smoke, and the deafening sound of gunfire was so loud that it made my ear ring. I screamed till my throat hurt, and the sound of my own voice echoed in my ears. The gunshots weren’t stopping, and bullets kept flying into the house. I got scared and began crying, “Oh God, oh God, this can't be happening, I’m going to die…. Ethan stood up like he was about to leave, but I held onto his hands. “Where are you going?” I ask, my voice shaking. “I have to check what’s going on,” he said. “Are you crazy?!! Stop trying to be a hero and hide; what if you get killed?!” I yelled; the gunshots still hadn’t stopped. Maria was curled up in a corner with her rosary in her hands as she was reciting it. “You don’t tell me what to do.” He yanked his hand away from my hold and crawled up to the liv
