I pretended to be anguished as I responded to Max's performance. "Max, I want to forgive you too, but what about the future? Every time I think about your affair, it feels like I'm stabbing myself."

According to my script, I shouldn't forgive Max too quickly, or he might become suspicious. It wouldn't fit the image of a woman who has been deeply hurt by her husband. Instead, I should appear conflicted, in agony, but unable to be completely cruel to him.

Max knelt before me, earnestly looking up at me with tears shimmering in his eyes. "Honey, can you bear to let me go? We've been together for six years..."
