Chapter One
Maya POV“You’re the only one I can trust to keep me alive.”My name is Maya Kristoff and if the man standing opposite me doesn’t help me, i would be dead.Lets back date a little.A MONTH AGO.The air smelled like ash and cider and the clouds around the tall oxford mansion didn’t make it any better, i brushed an invisible strand of hair away from my face, I tapped my neatly packed bun and cleared my throat as i inhaled sharply, there was nothing to do.I couldn’t go back, even if i wanted, the camera’s had picked me up the instant i walked through the huge brass gates and Harriet would’ve seen me also.“You seem hesitant to go inside Maya.” I turned slowly to meet the side profile of my squad mate, John.“No, i’m not.” I answered calmly facing the old building again, “I’m just taking in the sight before me, its bring back a lot of memories, don’t you think?” I added tucking my hands behind me.“Well, i would say you need it because i heard some pretty interesting news today.” It was hard for my curiosity to stay briddled so i let it get the best of me.“Would you mind sharing?” I asked and John smiled at me,“I’m afraid it would spoil the fun, you should go in, you will get all the news you can get.” he said and with one last glance at me John walked towards the front doors. He may be an annoying guy but at least he was honest enough to keep me prepared. With one last swing at the air i walked towards the giant oaks doors. The doors parted revealing the face of the person i didn’t want to see.“Maya.” The cold voice called out my name. Stray hazel eyes stared at me and black neatly trimmed bangs framed the face of my platoon leader. Sergeant. Serg, as i called her.“Serg.” I replied in a stiff tone, from the background i noticed the stares in my direction, hard curious stares. It was obvious that the news of what i had done had spread in the association.“Follow me.” She said and walked away without waiting for my response. I followed, my heeled boots silently grazing the wooden floors, i kept my shoulders squared and my chin tucked up, i would not forgive myself if i walked like one that has been defeated.I followed her up the stairs and when we reached the third floor and headed towards the room in the last corner, i knew that there was no escaping. Sergeant entered the room before me giving me milli seconds to prepare myself for what was coming.I pushed the door open and the aura that enveloped the space was enough to push me down but i managed to step inside without the need to run away. The board room was large and house a large curved desk behind which the twelve leaderes of the hunters council sat, each presenting a province. Sergeant had just taken her seat at the far left and the scowl she had on her face was replicated through at least six of them.“Maya Kristoff of the platoon 9a, you have been summoned to the council for a reason, are you aware of this?” The lead captain, Captain Luke Graham, a man in his late sixties, white hair and neatly trimmed bears which covered up the small scare just above his lips.“No, i am not aware of why i was summoned.” I answered, my voice came out in a soft echo. The council didn’t seem too happy with my response and i could feel hot striking glare on the top of my head.“It seems your memory needs some reboot, let’s jog it up shall we?” He said and raised a file in front of him while his eyes skimmed through the words.“On the fifteenth of September, during the red moon, a hunter was seen in the midst of a werewolf brawl. Not only did you help them to capture the great white but you left them alone without doing your job as a hunter.”I remained quiet thinking on my words carefully.“Don’t you have something to say?”“I’m not sure i know what you mean.” I answered instead which was a wrong move for me.“Maya, this is not a joke.” Sergeant said harshly and i turned to look at her. Her eyes blazed in unhinged flames but it wasn’t enough to send me to my knees.“The girl clearly doesn’t see the implication of her actions and this is your fault, sergeant. You baby her too much.” One of the men stated and i resisted the urge to throw the pocket knife strap to my pants towards his head. If only he knew that she’ll rather have a knife to her throat than ‘pamper’ me.“I want to know where your source is from because that would make them at fault for not doing anything, hence making them fall in the same position of failing in their duties.” I said boldly.“We managed to capture one of the werewolf who crossed our path- Sergeant captured him and he mentioned that you were there during the red moon.”“Hmm- i see.” I answered. “So i’m getting pernalized for not annihilating about fifty werewolf, even the mega Alphas that is way classified at the same ranking as you?” I asked with my brows tucked up.“I have been trained in this place to not act impulsively and should not jepordize my identity in critical situations and thats exactly what i did.” I responded firmly.“I was amongst the werewolf- as an insider- doing my assignment, i was directed to get information on the white wolf and the pack in those areas, i didn’t have enough time to get anything get backup without being pointed out as a suspect.” I explained calmly breaking away other information.“Now thats not adding up, they would know if you weren’t one of them in one glance- they can smell our kind, they know a threat when they see one.” One of the men with gray hair said and i dug my nails into my palms.“Thats because i made a deal with their leader, i didn’t have to mingle with the others and they all respected the decision of their leader.” I replied.“What then did you gain when you got the information you needed? You still let the whitewolf go, and i heard that you two are relate-”“I am not related to that thing.” My response came out sharply and a little bit agreessive.“Watch your tone Maya.” Sergeant said and i inhaled slowly, exhaling out the budding aggression.“The white wolf is discovered to be your foster sister, but thats not the point. What else did you find during your mission?” Something about this question was threatening and majorly inquistive, my brows creased and my mind raced- they must’ve figured out that i had another motive being among the wolves.“I found a rare gem stone, its my personal finding-” I finally said.“And you don’t think its beneficial to the association?” one of the council memeber asked.“I mean nobody mentioned it so i didn't think it was anybody’s business.” i replied calmly.“Well we will like to bring to your attention that that gem stone is not of any kind and will aid in the progression of the association. We would need you to submit that piece.” Serg said firmly and i tilted my head to the side.“Oh, and what if i don’t?” I smelled foul play and I watched displeasure cross Serg’s face.“Then-”“Its fine. Its all fine,” my eyes widened at the response, it wasn't expected and it was too calm. “If the girl went out of her way to find the gem for herself then i don't see the problem and it shows that we can trust her with the rest of the mission.” the head of the council said and Serg shared my shock but she quickly adjusted herself.“Mission?” I asked with my brow up. “What mission?”“You think we were not aware of your little finding?” They had know from the beginning, they had let me find the gem but why was Serg surprised with this? Shouldn’t she know?“That gem stone, Maya, we’ve been trying to find it for a while now and every hunter we sent out failed at finding it, yet you found the first piece.” The first piece? There was more?“There is more?” the question slipped out and I watched as the lips of the head of the council slip into a small smile.“Oh Maya, you didn’t know? Of course there is more.” he replied. “That's why we are offering you the mission to find the rest of them.”“What’s the catch? What is my reward.”“You get what every hunter ever dreams of, the crowning of the highest ranking.”Chapter TwoMaya POV“Are you really going to take on this mission?” John asked as we walked into the training grounds, we were sparring partners and it was time for our evening session. I stood opposite him and got into a fighting stance, but John remained as he was, with no stance, no hands ready to defend, just his olive-tanned face staring back at me. Instead of answering, I sent out a jab for his head which he blocked turning away from my side.“Maya, you’ll have to think this through,” he stated as i turned to land another punch at him. He blocked it again.“There is nothing to think about John, or are you worried i would be your senior soon when i complete the mission.” I teased and he rolled his eyes at me.“I guess you’ve made up your mind then,” he said and i paused adjusting my form, i crossed my hands over my chest and glanced at my dusty boots.“Yes, I have. I mean what more should i have said- No? John, this is big, just not for everyone, it is a great deal for me.” I p
Chapter ThreeMalcolm POVWhy was she here? It had been a year and yet she still managed to get under my nose without trying so hard. It was her i saw back at the boarding area and now she was here. Why? Maya was trouble and from the little time I’ve known her, i know that she is a woman who carries chaos with her.I raked my hands through my wet hair as i stood under the shower head which released hot water to ease the tension on my shoulders. Maya Kristoff. Her honey eyes were still the same, soft yet nothing about her was friendly, they still housed that door of unattended emotions, her nose, a product of her dangerous engagement and her lips, soft and possibly luscious. “You shouldn’t be having such thoughts about this woman.” I scolded myself rubbing my hands across my face but it was no use, the image of her face was already implanted in my head. She had dyed her hair, it was not as the bright champagne, instead, it was a deep shade of brown almost like she is hiding a part of
Chapter Four Maya POV“Your name is Anya Henry?” Malcolm asked as he reached for my the clipboard which was passed to them, his eyes skimmed over the information, i watched his face for a more broader reaction but his face remained unchanging. What was going on in his head?“Yes-” he raised his head to stare at me as i replied. It was almost as if he was ready to tear my lie apart and call me out but instead he leaned back in his seat and crossed his hands over his chest.“Tell us, why do you want to work here?” He asked and the rest of the team remained quiet, Malcolm easily carried the room with his authouritative aura and his hands crossed over his chest as his eyes nailed me.“I have what your company needs and would love to build an experience with my stay here, both with the company as an organization and the people in it.” i answered smoothly with my eyes still on him.“I see. Tell us Anya- what did you do before you applied for this job?” He asked and his lips stretched out i
Chapter FiveSong- AIMED TO KILL- Jade LeMac………………………………………MAYA POV……………I groaned as i opened my eyes and stretched my bones as i got out of bed. I rubbed the sides of my neck and climbed out of the comfortable bed and moved to the windows. The blinds covered them and i pushed them apart as i stared down into the darkness, the sun was yet to rise but there were traces of its light from a far off.I closed the curtains and moved to the bathroom where i washed my face and brushed my teeth. I changed out of my sleeping clothes and put on my sports short and a sports bra, i wiggled into the large black hoodie which covered my upper thighs. I checked my phone for any news or updates but my screen was blank as i received none. I put on my shoes grabbed my headset and phone and stepped out of my room. My eyes scanned over the door opposite me, Malcolms room, i checked on my button lips and walked away.I took the stairs to the h
Chapter SixSong- OUT OF THE BLUE- Fluerie……………………………………..MAYA POV……………“Hold the elevator!!” I yelled as my feets picked up pace and i tucked a loose strand of hair away from my face, i was not late but if i didnt get to the office in the next thirty minutes on my first day then i should be expecting to be fired. I heard the sound of the elevator door and i turned up the corner. My eyes locked with the same man i had left an hour ago, and while his gaze was on me, i watched as his fingers reached out and pressed the button. It took my five seconds to realize that he was closing up the doors. He was closing up the doors. My brows narrowed and i skipped further, hoping to get in the just in time, Malcolm eyes followed me in a cold gaze as the gaze slid shut. I banged my hands on the closed doors but it was all futile. He had intentionally locked the doors on me, i clenched my fists as i tried to think of less ways to murder Malcolm.I sighed and threw my head back lightly.“Are you
Chapter SevenSong- Heartburn- Wafia………………………...MALCOLM POV…………………Maya is a wrecking ball. Chaotic and loud. She is a force that always brings destruction with her and when i spotted her entering the gym from the far end, i couldnt help but stare at her form. She hadn’t nticed me and with that headset on, she was probably getting briefings for whatever she was in the city for.She told me that she was here for a new start, but i knew people like her didn’t ‘do a new start’. They were out to destroy something. I moved from where i stood to one of the benches behind the threadmill, it wasn’t intentional to want to be behind her but i wasn’t going to cower away just because she was here. I would do what i need to do and not think about Maya.My plan didnt work. It looked like i had been staring at her and she caught my gaze. Shit.I moved my eyes away from her and down to the benches where the weights sat. I climbed on, starting my rep, some oart of me thought she would say somethi
Chapter EightSong- Starving- Hailee Steinfeild, Zedd…………………………………………MAYA POV……………I hated it here. I checked my watch as the rest of us got into the elevator. It was closing time and i couldnt wait to peel the clothes away and hit the showers. “So Anya, how was your first day?” I turned to the brunette who had removed her hair from the high ponytail it was in. She wore glasses which sat on the bridge of her nose, she had tucked her tablet to her other arm and held her tote bag in the other.“It was fine,” i replied with a wide smile, but it was a lie. I wasn’t able to move around to find any clue on how to get the first piece of the gem.“It’s fun having another lady around for a change.” She muttered and a low chuckle escaped my lips. She was right, there was a large percentage of male in our department and Mark who had black curly hair rolled his eyes as he turned to me.“Don’t mind her, she is happy because she has someone to invite to sleepovers.” He said and i tried not to
Chapter NineSong- ENEMIES- LAUV…………………………..MAYA POV……………“Did you two date before now?” If i hadn’t been surrpsied with Lucas being here and accessing me with slightly accurate points, his question now had my eyes widen and i wasn’t alone Malcolms face had the same look of resentement for Lucas who thought it was possible.“Hell no!” I said firmly while he reached my table and glared down at me.Lucas amusement spread through his face and he leaned back to stare at me and then Malcolm and then back at me again.“There is not in a thousand way that i would date someone like his kind-” the words slipped out of my mouth before i could cross check, but they had dropped and my eyes widened feeling two pairs of eyes on me.I shuffled in my seat and raised the cup of tea to my lips distracting myself from my slip up. “We did not.” Malcolm clarified and my hands tightened against the ceramic in my hand. I heard a slight beep in the ear bud tucked in my ear and the screen of my tablet ca
Chapter Fifty-ThreeMalcolm POVFLASHBACK CONTINUES “What- I’m not going to die-“ Morgan didn’t get to finish his words as a growl from far off set us quiet. I swallowed and my eyes met with Hannah who was already in a fighting stance. If it was anything that made me like Hannah, it was due to the fact that she wasn’t a liability. She ranked among the top ten best in track and field and was a worthy opponent in hand combat but she was quite the person to move against the crowd. It surprised me that she was here because of who her brother was in the pack. Her family were well to do and they were of a prestigious line.“We need to leave this place, it’s too bare if we want to live. Let’s go inside, it’s best to camouflage our scent with that of the freshly washed soil in the swamps.” She said and then I watched the rest of the come out from the shin trees. We were seven in total, all of which I recognized from my peer, and it was the set who had come of age to activate the werewolf cur
Chapter Fifty-TwoMalcolm POVShe was less hostile when drunk and now as she laid besides me, she didnt look like a high ranking hunter who went after the big bad wolves, wolves like myself. I sighed and stared at the ceiling. What was i thinking? Kissing her and allowing ourselves get lost. She wanted it and heck i wanted it too, but this was turning to something else. She was supposed to be my pretend girlfriend but its turning me to the over protective boyfriend. You like her, don’t you? My wolf asked as i turned my gaze back to her, she was still in her dress and from the crease on her face, she was uncomfortable in it, ignoring the voice i reached for the strap of her dress and gently pulled it down her shoulders, she stirred and her eyes opened slightly as she stared, but she was far off. “You’re not doing this right,” I stopped as she closed her eyes again, peeling off the shirt on me, i wore the shirt on her body and buttoned up, from underneath i peeled off her dress easily
Chapter Fifty-OneMaya POVHis hands locked around my thighs as he pulled me up and closer to him. With my mouth slightly parted and my mind trying to keep up with what was happening, his hot breath fanned my neck and then stretching towards my neck his lips latched unto the open space and there he sucked on my skin. A tease, that was what he was. There was a slow reckoning in the back of my head of what was happening, i enjoyed the feel of Malcolm with me. I enjoyed the way he treated my body, i enjoyed the way he made me get out of that headspace constantly seeking to drown me. He had seen a part of my dark side and had not bothered to treat me differently, he did everything Cole wouldn't do for me.“Hey, is everything okay?” He asked and my eyes moved to his face. Those eyes were staring at me and the longing was still in them, but he was patient, keeping himself at bay, waiting to make sure that i was okay. Not sure what to reply, i tilted my head to the side with my lips caught u
Chapter FiftyMaya POVExcitment burst through my entire being as his hands held unto me, like i was a line that held his life, maybe i over exaggerate but his hold on me was secured, my hands held unto him also, the strength to not let go was fuelled by the tequila i had drank but it didnt matter. His lips contoured mine in strong yet soft movements that had me gasping for breaths, even with closed eyes, it helped me focus on the fact that i was in Macloclm hands and kissing him. Seconds felt like eternity and then they ended, his lips were away from mine, my eyes pulled opened and i was greeted with his eyes watching me. Eyes which were usually in narrow slits glaring at me stared at me differently. There was no hollow, neither was there any caution in them, instead there was dilated pupils which showed hunger and want. Cole stared at me this way but it felt different this time, i didnt feel a need rto hold back and my body was at rest, it was safe. Malcolm made me feel safe. “Ma
Chapter Forty-NineMaya POV“Well you’re nowhere to be found and I want to have fun, I shouldn't have to wait for you before I enjoy myself.” I muttered as though it was another part of me speaking in slurry tones but it was all the tequila. The hard expression on Malcolm's face dropped and his eyes softened. “Get lost man, you left her and now I'm going to give her what she wants.” Micheal said and Malcolm exhaled quietly and turned to him.“I'm not going to try and fight you so let her go.”“No.” Oh oh, Micheal was crossing the line and he was pushing his mercy more than intended, and it was only a matter of time before Malcolm made him eat his words.“I’m not asking, Anya, let's go.” he said and I walked away from Micheal with a sorry expression on my face, it was best to save him the trouble of dealing with the Malcolm and regretting it but he held into my wrists tightly.“No, she's not going anywhere.”“You’re hurting me.” I muttered but with the exchange of glares the men shar
Chapter Forty-EightMaya povLayla. I didn’t think to hear that name soon neither did I think to hear it from a woman I just met in the bathroom of a werewolf feeding ground.“What do you know about Layla?” My hands curled around the glass and Cassie’s eyes followed my movements.“Easy on the glass, you are not so subtle with hiding your emotions.” she responded. “Your sister- Layla and I crossed paths a few weeks ago and just I say that she is a sweet lady. She's been living in the big city with her boyfriend and friends.” it was weird hearing about how Layla was doing after everything that had happened between us in the past months.“She’s here? In this city?” I asked unable to hold back on my curiosity.“No, no she's not. I was in her city when I was out to look for something.” Cassie responded and I took a sip from my glass. “Does she know you're alive?”“It doesn't matter, she hates me for what I did and it's best if we both stayed in our seperate lives.” I muttered. There was n
Chapter Forty-SevenMaya POVEven as everyone retreated from the room back downstairs, the three of us remained with Kevin and Henry in the room.“I think your friend will have to excuse us.” Kevin said, referring to me, I turned to Lucas and then Malcolm who gave me the go ahead. I rose to my feet ready to leave when Henry called me back.“No, I think she can stay.” He said and my eyes landed on Henry, he had reached for the bottle of scotch on the stool next to him and poured some in the little glass. “You want the lady to stay?” Kevin asked and I could trace the wavering in his voice.“Yes, I do think she’s quite interesting and would make a lovely company.” He said and my hands moved to my sides, the black dress was sitting on my body had plenty prints from my sweaty hands.“I think I should go.” I stated instead, I was no fool. There was nothing to be happy about sitting with these guys, having to be in their midst was a trap that meant more eyes to be on me and if I wanted to
Chapter Forty-sixMaya POV“The splinx?” Lucas asked, clearly confused by what it means. My expression should’ve mirrored his but I wasn’t confused. Infact, I was very aware of what the dark object was. It was amongst the things developed by the tech teams in the association, every hunter past the sapphire rank is aware of what it is but the thing was, we never actually saw the thing in real life. It was kept locked away in one of the facilities, there was no way anyone could get to it, especially Cole now that he was out of the association.“Yes, that device is the answer we need.” Kevin said, retreating back in the embrace of the women who sat beside him.“Why not get another witch to deactivate the spell?” Another voice asked as the man in black suit walked in through another opening. He had dark glasses covering his eyes and two men following behind him in similar attire.“It’s not that easy Henry, with what you’ve done to the witches in this region they’ve all gone into hiding.
Chapter forty-FiveMaya POV“If you want to use the point that i’m in the enemies den, then might i surprise you that this thing-” he opened his hands outwards and smiled. “Is my house too. You didnt think that i left the association just to go back to the normal human life did you?”I stayed quiet, what did he mean by that?“Maya, if you know better you’ll know that you are being used by the association, just like every single low level hunter.”“I am not a low-level hunter,” my tone was sharp and held every means of contempt in my words. Cole loved my reaction as his smile grew wider and he leaned closer to us. “And what you think i know or doing, is not your concern Cole, don’t act like you had one.”“Still the stubborn girl as always. Well then, if you won’t listen to me, i’ll allow you to see for yourself how dangerous the association is and what it gives to be controlled by them and Malcolm keep a leash on her, she can be quite wild,” he finished his drink and pushed his chairs
