Gabriel and the others quickly made their way through the caves that the pups traveled through. They were easily able to follow their scents to see which route the pups had taken that morning. Gabriel had Marcus stopping and checking that various shields and spells were still in place as they traveled through the caves. Thankfully, with everyone focused on their mission and alert to possible attacks, Marcus and Sarah were not wanting to engage in idle chatter. Normally the two of them would never miss a chance to try to get under his skin about something. They had all grown up together. They knew that he was the Alpha King and they respected his position, but they were also not afraid of him like so many others.
Gabriel was focused on the mission of getting Sebastian back, but his mind was also filled with other thoughts and worries. Gabriel had to make sure that he was not leaving the valley and town vulnerable to attack. It had not escaped his notice that his nephew was the only one captured. Could it have been that they grabbed Sebastian since he was the only one that could shift and call for help? Yes. However, Gabriel was somewhat puzzled by the fact that none of the other pups, none of which have their wolves yet, were not caught since they would have been slower than Sebastian. He was still wondering if there was more to Sebastian being taken. Why him? Why now? Had the hunters heard the rumors that he and Conri were starting to show signs of going feral? Were they trying to draw him out thinking that he was weak, or was all of the timing just coincidence?
These were just some of the things that he was pondering when they reached the end of the cave system. Pausing Gabriel and Conri sniffed the air to see which way the pups had gone. Catching their scent traveling to the right, Gabriel motions for the others to follow him. Be alert. I do not smell the hunters here, but this could be a trap he sent through their mental link. Sarah and Marcus nodded that they had heard.
Once they left the cave system Gabriel and the others began to work their way through the boulders that are at the base of the mountain. The scents showed them that the pups had spent time going in and out of the boulders playing this morning. I swear I am going to beat his tail when I get him back Sarah sent out. He knows better than to play in and around rocks like this because they could easily shift and crush him!
You will have plenty of time to scold him once we get him back, Marcus replied.
Sarah nodded in agreement as they continued picking their way following the pups trail.
Once they passed the boulders at the base of the mountain, the pups trail led them toward a stream that is fed by melting snow from the tops of the mountains. Down by the stream it was easy to see where the ambush had taken place. There were marks along the bank and in the mud where a struggle had taken place. Conri began sniffing at the shoe prints that were in the mud and in the vegetation where the hunters had most likely hidden. He had found two used syringes that smelled of wolfbane when Sarah called out.
Gabriel!
Gabriel turned to see Sarah holding a piece of blue cloth in her mouth.
It is part of Sebastian’s shirt. There is blood on it! Sarah cried through the link.
Gabriel could hear the panic in her voice. He trotted over and looked at the fabric that she reluctantly sat on the ground in front of him. Her wolf Lupe was making soft whining noises scared that their pup might be really hurt. Sarah has been worried all of this time, but there was also the hope that they wouldn’t hurt Sebastian since he could be used as leverage to bring Gabriel and herself to the hunters. Seeing even the small abount of blood on the torn fabric was making all of her fears return. She knew that Sebastian needed her to not fall apart right now, but it was so hard.
Looking at the fabric Gabriel and Conri could smell Sebastian, and see the small amount of blood. He is okay. They would have wanted him alive. I’m sure this is just from a small scratch. I know he is alive. Feel your connection with him. It is still there. If they had killed him the connection would have been severed. Gabriel tried to comfort his sister. Looking around he looked to see if they could gather any other information form the area.
I think I found their tracks out. I also see signs that they had a cage sitting. Marcus called out in the mind link.
On the way Gabriel linked back to Marcus.
Are you going to be okay? Do you want to continue with us? Gabriel asked Sarah.
Taking a deep breath and taking one last deep breath of the fabric Sarah nodded her head and turned toward where Marcus was a little further down the creek.
When Gabriel and Sarah arrived they could see the imprints in the mud from where it looked like a cage had been.
I wonder if they used a silver cage think that it would keep him weak? Gabriel thought through the link.
Nodding his head Marcus replied That could be good for Sebastian. Maybe they think the silver will keep him weak and they will not dose him with wolfsbane again. They do not know that the royal line and alphas are not affected by silver.
It looks like they headed back to the highway. The highway would be the quickest way for them to get to Rotterford’s. I have not found specific scents that I recognize, but I know that he is the closest and one of the largest hunter groups in the area. Gabriel linked the others.
Nodding Marcus replied, Should we meet up with Axle and Megan or do we want to continue as our wolves and go through the forest? They are probably still on the road since they cannot move as quickly as we do.
I feel we need to stay in the forest, Sarah said. I can’t explain it, but something is telling me to stay in the forest.
I agree. Gabriel replied. I think that they will set up the cage for a trap somewhere in the forest surrounding Rotterford’s. He is too cowardly to want to chance a direct attack at his beloved estate. Hopefully, if we stay in the forest we have a better chance of finding Sebastian quicker. I am hoping to surprise them since they really do not know how quickly we can travel as wolves and since we are coming as a small team. They will hopefully be looking for an army to leave the valley, not a single SUV. If we leave now we should be able to reach the outskirts of his property by morning. If we can find Sebastian tomorrow that will not give them a lot of time to plan for us. They could not have known that they boys would come here this morning so I am thinking that they are planning this as they go.
Let’s get my son back Sarah said.
In agreement they all turned away from the tracks leading to the highway and traveling deeper into the forest.
Meet us at the old witch clearing tomorrow morning by 8:00. We are continuing on as planned. Gabriel sent to Axel and Megan.
We’ll be there they replied.
Emily looked at the screen on her phone again to check the time. It was now just a little after 2:00 in the morning. She knew her uncle would be back up in a few hours to get her, but she could not find the motivation to pack. Everything that happened yesterday and that her uncle said kept replaying in her mind. When he first locked her in her room she had cried from the shock, pain, and unfairness of it all. How had things gone so wrong? Once she had collected herself she had raced to her cell phone to try to call for help, but of course her uncle had been smart enough to have the service turned off. She had no way of knowing when he had the service turned off on her phone since she had left it in her room all day yesterday while hiding out. He probably had it turned off when he realized she had left it in her room on purpose. Now her phone was nothing more than an expensive clock and music player.
At 6:00 sharp Emily was standing ready in the center of her bedroom when her uncle flung open her bedroom door with great flourish. Seeing her standing there packed, dressed nicely, and ready had the smile slipping off his face. Seeing the smile slipping off his face brought a smile to Emily’s face.“Good morning uncle. I hope that you slept well. I followed all of your instructions. I have everything packed and ready just like you asked me. I’ll ask Lord Rotterford if I can have the rest of my belongings shipped to his estate later since I only had three suitcases to pack everything in,” Emily finished brightly gesturing to the three suitcases lined up neatly beside her.Emily watched as her uncle’s face turned bright red. He opened and closed his mouth twice before he could grit out through clenched teeth, &ldqu
Are you here yet? Gabriel sent to Axel and Megan. He, Sara, and Marcus were just now coming up on the old witch clearing. They referred to that clearing by that name because centuries ago a coven of dark witches used to meet here and perform rituals that required sacrifices, typically human or some form of magical creature. The Witch's Council that came into power 500 or so years ago, had since outlawed the use of black magic. They had spells set to monitor if anyone uses black magic. If you were caught you could be stripped of your powers. Yes. We will be there in three minutes. We got here a little early and did some scouting around Rotterford’s. We might have overheard something interesting. Megan replied. Is it about Sebastian?
He’s gaining on you. Hurry. Faster. Faster. You need to run faster, Emily repeated to herself as she ran through the woods. She was running as fast as her legs would carry her. Emily was leaping over fallen trees, ducking low branches, dodging dense areas of underbrush, but she could still hear him chasing her. The faster she ran the closer he sounded. Emily was too scared to turn around. She swore that she could feel him breathing on her neck. Just as she felt like she could not run anymore and her legs were giving out, Emily tripped over a log that she tried to leap over. As her foot caught on the log she stretched her arms out to catch herself. As the ground was rushing up to meet her, Emily braced herself for the hard impact that she knew was coming.Gasping, Emily sat up quickly with her arms stretched out in front of her. It had just been a dream, she realized. Sighing, Emily lea
Looking at the clock, Emily saw that it was 6:15. She was starting to wonder if Mr. Kingsley had forgotten to tell her that she was supposed to meet everyone downstairs. He had not seemed to like her at all. Maybe he is trying to get her in trouble with Lord Rotterford on the very first day before she even really meets him. Emily stood up and was heading toward the door when it was flung open. She quickly stumbled back to avoid being hit by the door. In the doorway stood a large, older heavier set man that was dressed in a suit. His face was red, and he was breathing heavily. Emily had a bad feeling that she was about to meet Lord Rotterford, and she did not make a good first impression. Emily went to speak when he cut her off yelling.“WHY ARE YOU JUST STANDING AROUND UP HERE? WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE PLAYING AT,” he yelled at her. Stepping into the room he leaned down and yelled in
Night was falling and Gabriel and the others were still no closer to finding Sebastian. Gabriel could tell that Sarah was becoming more and more worried the longer that it took for them to find him, but he also knew that they were all exhausted. This would be the second night that Sebastian has been with the hunters, no one had slept or eaten in over forty eight hours. They had been too busy running, driving, or searching during all of that time. It seemed they were going to have to search closer to Rotterford’s estate and possibly in the estate, but Gabriel knew that they needed to rest and eat first. If he and conri were struggling with exhaustion and hunger, he knew the others had to really be struggling. Gabriel knew that they could not chance making simple mistakes at this point due to exhaustion and hunger. He sent out a message for everyone to meet back at the SUV that Axel and Megan had brought down.
Emily was just starting to worry about Mrs. Kingsley when she heard the knob of her bedroom door starting to turn. Tensing Emily held her breath scared to see who might come through the door. Had Mrs. Kingsley told Lord Rotterford about her trying to leave? Had Lord Rotterford decided to come up here and see if she was following his directions? The door opened, and Mrs. Kingsley hurried and slipped in. She made sure to close the door quietly behind her. Emily let out the breath that she had been holding in a huge woosh and put her hand over her racing heart. “I know you said that you would be back, but you scared me,” Emily said a little breathlessly. ‘I was worried that Lord Rotterford had decided to come up and see if I was following his directions.” Emily wasn’t going to admit
Emily was exhausted. She had been running most of the night. She would slow down and walk a few times to catch her breath and rest, but she was too scared to stop completely. Her legs were now to the point that they were shaking and felt like jelly, but Emily knew if she stopped that she might not get back up again. Everything on her body was hurting. She could feel the bruising and swelling from Lord Rotterford hitting and grabbing her.Emily had heard the baying of the hounds about an hour after she left the mansion. Mrs. Kingsely had been right. She had heard them most of the night as she continued to run. It had scared her more though when she quit hearing the baying about an hour ago. Emily could only hope that meant that the hounds had led everyone in a different direction far from her. She was abl
“She’s waking up,” Emily heard a femine voice yelling right before she heard the pounding up feet and then her hand being held tightly. “Emily. Emily, can you hear me,” her mate asked in a trembling voice. The sound of his voice and the pain that was in it broke her heart. It took more energy than she would have ever thought, but Emily finally forced her eyes open. As soon as she could focus, she found her eyes locked with beautiful relief filled green ones. “Hi,” she managed to croak out with a small smile. “Hi beautiful,” Gabriel replied huskily as he leaned forward to kiss her forehead. “How are you feeling?’ “Thirsty and tired for some reason. Rica said that I have been out for three weeks.” Gabriel helped Emily to sit up a little so that she could take a few sips from the cup of water that was pushed into his hand. “Yes. The wound hit you harder than anyone thought. Agatha thought that she had lost you for a moment, but Rica pulled you back. We just couldn’t get you to wa
I kind of figured we would have to do something like that. Do Gabriel and Conri know? Emily asked grimacing. Nope, Rica said. How much trouble are we going to be in for doing this?Loads. They might even kill us if we make it. Do you think that my grandmother would have suggested this if she thought we wouldn’t. No, but I also know that things can go bad quickly, Rica said hesitantly. Why are you so hesitant? Do you know something? I know a lot actually. There just isn’t anything that I can tell you right now. That was helpful. I know. All I can say is that we do need to survive. For Gabriel and Conri? And others…Rica said carefully. What others? I can’t say yet. Okay…so do you not want to save Agatha? I do want to save her, I just need you to be strong and to get us through this. Promise me. I promise. Should we tell Gabriel and Conri? I think we have to. They are going to have to give a lot of their energy to Agatha to heal us. Okay. Do you want to tell them? No.
“Angela, how are they,” Emily asked as soon as they made it back into the valley and then rushed to the hospital where all of the injured were receiving help. Emily was relieved to see that everyone that they passed at the hospital did indeed have minor injuries. “Not good,” Angela said, quickly swiping a tear from her cheek. “I can’t keep them in this state much longer, and as soon as they are no longer in this frozen state, they will quickly bleed out.” “Can’t I pull energy and give it to them to help them heal,” Emily asked sadly, as she looked at her grandmother and Agatha. Angela shook her head. “No, the bullets have done too much damage for them to recover from.” “Could we do surgery while they are frozen to repair the damage to give them a fighting chance,” Emily asked, refusing to give up. Angela sighed and slumped in a seat by Agatha’s bed. “Even frozen, the surgery would kill them. Rotterford knew what he was doing when he shot your grandmother. He missed her he
“You are right,” Emily’s uncle said, sighing heavily. “I know that saying ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I was wrong’ will not fix the mistakes that I have made.” “Then what do you want? The only reason that you are not dead is because my mate was hearing you out,” Gabriel growled. “I wanted Emily to know the truth, and I think I just wanted to clear my conscience.” “You came all of this way so that you could have a clear conscience,” Emily asked skeptically. “And so that you could know the truth,” her uncle said with a small shrug. “I am dying, so if you decide to kill me it won’t matter,” he laughed bitterly. “That might be better than what is coming. I have cancer in case you were wondering.” “I can’t heal you,” Emily said quickly thinking her uncle was hoping that injuring Lord Rotterford and finally telling her the truth would make her help him. She felt bad thinking that, but she also knew that she had to try to help Agatha and her grandmother if possible. She couldn’t help her uncle t
“What do you mean,” Emily asked. “I have made a lot of bad decisions in my life. I know that I can never make what I have done to you right, but I can at least make sure that you are able to live the life that you have now.” “What have you done to me? Do you mean the part where you called me a whore for taking my chances with Lord Rotterford over you,” Emily cried as she pointed to the man that was still withering in pain on the ground. “Or do you mean, where you stole from myself and my parents and forced me out of my own home to pay your gambling debts?” Emily’s uncle looked pained as he admitted, “I have done way worse. I was the fool that told the hunters where they could find your mother. I was blinded by jealousy of my brother. I was hoping that I could make it look like he was the one that told them where she was that day then she would run to me for comfort.” “You wanted to have me killed so that my mom might turn to you for comfort? How could you even think that she woul
Emily wanted to close her eyes as she heard the gun fire, but she found that she couldn’t look away. Knowing that you are about to die is a funny thing. It is almost like time stands still. You have all of the time in the world to think about things, but in reality everything happens within seconds. Since Rica had tried to come forward when Jenna first placed the spell on them, Emily’s eyesight was much sharper. She could see every detail of the bullet as it came barreling toward her, but at the same time her mind took this opportunity to think about all of the things that she would regret. Emily hated the fact that she and Gabriel and Rica and Conri never really got a chance to enjoy each other. Hopefully they know how much they love them. Emily also hated the fact that she couldn’t save her grandmother. She had only come out of hiding after all of these years because of her. Just as the bullet was about to reach her, Emily heard another shot fired. Her eyes changed focus just in
“What in the world is that,” Emily asked. She didn’t realize that she had spoken aloud till Gabriel answered her. “I’m not sure what Rotterford has planned. I think that I hear something metallic mixed in with the sound of the trees moving, snapping, and falling.” “I hear it too,” Hunter replied, taking a step forward. “I don’t suppose that giants are real,” Emily asked, only half joking as she watched more trees shake and then give way to whatever was making their way toward them. “They are real,” Gabriel said, “but this doesn’t sound like a giant. If it was a giant you would know it.” “What do you mean by that,” Emily asked. “Giants are old,” Agatha said. “They are elementals. They are made of rock, water, and ice. If one of them moved you would know. When the ones made of rock move it makes the news because they have either caused an earthquake or a landslide.” “Oh,” Emily said as she felt the ground vibrating under them. I still think it could be a giant. It’s not, Ric
“Remember our deal,” Lord Rotterford said as Jenna fought to not roll her eyes while looking into the two-way mirror that he had given her to use to communicate with her during her trip to meet with Gabriel and the others. . “I remember,” Jenna said, trying to mask the frustration on her face and while trying to add a little tremor to her voice. “I know that my life depends on this.” “If you cross me, I will make sure that you die a very slow and painful death,” Lord Rotterford growled out one last time as they disappeared from sight. With a quick scream of frustration, Jenna threw the mirror at a tree and watched happily as it shattered. Hopefully she would get an additional seven years of bad luck for breaking that mirror, she thought ruefully. Rotterford threatening her with a slow painful death was a joke. He must not realize that she already wished that she could die. The only thing that kept her going was thoughts of Alice. She couldn't lert Alice down. If she didn’t help
An hour later everyone had made it to their assigned locations as far as Emily knew. She was waiting with Gabriel, Hunter, Agatha, and the rest of their core group. Always worried about an attack Gabriel was making sure to keep Emily blocked by him, Hunter, Samuel, and Axel, but they were also trying to keep it from looking obvious at the same time. Emily and Rica tried not to roll their eyes at the guys worrying about protecting them. She also knew that there were warriors all around them even though she could not see them. A few of the witches like Breanna, Agatha, and others could aparate warriors as needed, but due to the numbers needed, Gabriel and the others decided to find another way to have warriors able to be in multiple locations unseen. The solution that they found was a small charm that would allow the warriors to be invisible for up to four hours. This time frame allowed enough of the warriors to be set up and prepared if the hunters attack. The rest of the warriors wer
