“I'm sorry sir,” Emily heard George, their old butler say. I have not been able to locate Miss Farrington.”

“Well look harder! Do you have any idea what her stunt today could have cost me? I--”

Emily quickly knocked and opened the study door to save poor George. He had been with their family since her father was a baby. He did not deserve to be berated for her little rebellion this morning.

Looking toward the study door her uncle’s eyes quickly zeroed in on her. “Where the hell have you been? I have been looking for you for hours,” Emily’s uncle raged at her. “You were supposed to be here for lunch to meet your fiance!”

Trying to rein in her temper, Emily replied in a calm manner, “I’m sorry if I upset you Uncle. I told you last night that I had no interest in marrying Lord Rottenford. I do not love him, in fact I find everything about him to be repulsive from his horrible manners, to his lack of proper hygiene, and how he behaves around any female.”

“His name is Lord Rotterford, and you damn well know it,” her uncle seethed. “I do not care if you love Lord Rotterford or not. He is very willing to bring some large business this way if he can marry you. As your guardian, I have decided that you shall marry him. You will be leaving tomorrow actually to travel with him to his estate in the mountains,” her uncle finished smugly.

“You cannot be serious,” Emily exclaimed. Taking a few steps closer to his desk she squared her shoulders and looked her sick uncle in the eye. “You cannot force me to marry him! If you want me out of the house, that is fine,” she said waving her hand. “I can take my inheritance from my mother and get a small place of my own, but I will not be forced into a marriage with that horrible man! Better yet, let me see the contract I signed the day of my father’s funeral. I think that it is time that I started running my own estate. You are not doing what you promised,” Emily finished triumphantly.

Smiling at her outburst, Emily’s uncle stood and walked around his desk. He perched on the front and handed her several papers that had been on his desk. “I thought that you might say something like that after your little stunt today. I took the liberty of having these papers pulled so that you can review them,” he said while continuing with that smile that was starting to give Emily pause.

She reached out her hand and took the papers that he extended toward her. As she looked through them she felt the blood draining from her face. This could not be right. How could he control everything? How had he got control of the money that was in a separate account that her mother created for her? “H-How did you do this,” Emily stammered, clutching the papers. “This money was separate from the estate. You did not have access to this. That was in an account just for me. It was to be part of my dowry or for an emergency for me,” Emily said, feeling more and more nervous as the seconds ticked by.

Smiling, her uncle reached for the papers that she was clutching in her shaking hands. Emily reluctantly let go of the papers after once again seeing her signature and initials on the papers that her Uncle had handed her. “Well, you see it is quite easy my dear. Your father died without a will, and since I am the closest relative that was of age everything came to me,” he gloated. “It was all the easier when you signed the paperwork on the day of his funeral that approved of me controlling everything.” Her uncle chuckled, “Imagine my excitement when I found that nice little sum about a year ago. It really was quite helpful in helping pay off some expenses that came up unexpectedly around the estate. The bank did not hesitate to let me pull the money when I explained how we needed to update a lot of the equipment, hire additional workers, update the house, you get the idea,” he finished with a satisfied smirk.

“None of that has happened though. I saw the ledgers a few weeks ago. What did you do with all of that money? We are barely staying afloat,” Emily asked as a sinking feeling was growing in her stomach. She had an idea of what had happened to the money, but she wanted to hear her uncle say it outloud. She also had a bad feeling that she knew why he was pushing so hard for her to marry Lord Rotterford now.

“Ah, well you see, I am having a little bit of bad luck with a few bets that I have made recently. I know that my luck will change soon, but until then your marriage to Lord Rotterford could easily fix our, I mean my little financial issue,” her uncle said.

“You mean that you want me to marry someone that I cannot stand to help you pay off your gambling debts,” Emily asked incredulously. “I cannot believe that you seriously think that I would ever agree to that,” Emily exclaimed. “I would rather be poor and homeless than to help you,” Emily yelled as she jumped up from the chair.

Holding out a hand to pause her from storming out her Uncle stated, “I thought that you might say that too,” her uncle tisked while shaking his head. “I was hoping that you might be agreeable to make the experience not so bad for you, but apparently you need to hear the hard truth. You belong to Lord Rotterford already,” her uncle said with an evil smile.

“What do you mean,” Emily asked. “I do not belong to anyone! You cannot sell a person,” Emily exclaimed as she felt her blood pressure rising. At the same time she was scared to hear what her uncle would say next.

“Actually, as your guardian, I can. You see, I had a really bad night the other week and Lord Rotterford helped me out. As payment, I promised him you. He actually has the right to take you in any form be it as a slave, mistress, wife, or anything. He chose to take you as his wife. You should feel honored that he is choosing to give you a good life and title,” her uncle finished grandly.

As Emily stood there speechless for a moment as her uncle continued to look at her like she should be overflowing with happiness and gratitude. “How dare you! How dare you use me to settle debts that you have created! I refuse to be sold as a payment for your debts,” Emily said, pulling herself together. “You cannot do this. I will go to the authorities!”

“Ah yes, the authorities,” her uncle said smiling. You mean the same authorities that are run by the captain that Lord Rotterford and myself gamble with each week? Yes, yes, I am sure that he will believe you over us,” he uncles said as he began to close the distance between himself and Emily. “So you see my dear, you really do not have as many choices as you think. I will say that you do have one more option,” her uncle said as he took the last few steps to close the distance between himself and Emily. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, “You can always stay here as my wife.”

Recoiling in horror and quickly taking a few steps back, Emily had to try for a second to recover from her shock. “Y-you cannot be serious. That is not even legal. You are my uncle. You and my father were brothers. That is so wrong,” the reasons just kept coming. Surely he was just being cruel. He could not really mean what he just said, could he? Emily stumbled over to one of the large chairs by the fireplace and sank down into the chair. She needed to sit before her legs gave out, but she also did not want to be near her uncle. Surely all of this was just a horrible nightmare. It could not be real, could it? Emily tried pinching her arm and quickly realized that this was happening. Her crazy uncle really had suggested that she could become his wife or be forced into marriage with Lord Rotterford to pay his debts.

Emily was not sure what to even say. Of course she would never agree to become his wife, but she did not want to marry Lord Rotterford either. Her mind was going in a million different directions all at once trying to find a way to get out of this mess. As her mind continued to whirl her uncle sat down in the chair across from her.

He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. Never losing the evil smirk that seemed permanently etched on his face now, her uncle responded, “I am very serious. You have two choices. You can marry Lord Rutherford and help gain some large business contracts for me and pay off my debt, or you can marry me. Now that I think about it, I know which choice I prefer,” he said while looking at her chest. His tongue licking his lips as he continued to stare at Emily.

Emily felt like she was going to be sick. She felt bile rising up in her throat and had to force herself to swallow a few times to try to keep from throwing up. What in the world? She had never cared for her uncle, but she had no idea that he was like this. She asked the only question that she could focus on for the second as her mind was racing in a thousand different directions. “Why? Why would you want to marry me?”

Her question finally brought her uncle’s attention back up to her face. “Because you look like your mother. She was supposed to be mine, you know. I saw her first. I was the one that she asked to escort her for her debutante debut. I was the one that she chose to spend her weekends laughing and shopping with. She would have stayed mine if your father had not shown up. He came back from a trip early and came to see what I was doing. He just wanted to see if he could steal the girl that he knew I was in love with. I could tell the moment that she saw him that she fell for him,” he said with a sneer. “My brother always got everything. He inherited the title, the estate, your mother, the money...everything. I was always in his shadow. Well not anymore,” he raved. “Now, I finally have it all! Well, almost everything,” he said, leering at Emily. “So my dear, what will it be? Will you marry me or Lord Rotterford?”

Thinking quickly that she just needed to get away from her deranged uncle Emily said the words that she never would have dreamed about saying half an hour ago, “I will marry Lord Rotterford,” she barely whispered.

Leaning back in his chair the smile vanished from her uncle’s face. “You are a whore just like your mother. You always want the bigger catch,” he snarled. “Well I hope you enjoy Lord Rotterford. You will be leaving with him first thing in the morning,” his demeanor quickly changing to a sneer. He quickly stood up and reached over and grabbed her arms in a bruising grip. Just to make sure that you do not try another stunt like today, I will personally be locking you in your room.”

“Wait! Stop! What are you doing? Let me go,” Emily exclaimed while trying to wretch her arms free of her uncle’s grasp. The next thing that she knew she was on the floor holding the right side of her face. She could feel the mark that was forming from her uncle back handing her.

“Do not try me girl. My patience for you has run out. You will stand up right this instance and come with me,” he said while breathing hard and looking down at her. “I may have promised you to Lord Rotterford to pay off my debts, but I did not promise that I would deliver you in perfect condition. Get up now or so help me you will have more than a bruised cheek when you leave tomorrow!”

Shaking and trying to hold back tears, Emily stood up still holding the right side of her face. She could feel her cheek swelling from the hit and taste copper in her mouth. She did not utter a sound when her uncle grabbed her left arm and dragged her out of the study and upstairs to her room. When he reached her door he shoved her in hard enough that she stumbled to the floor.

He stood in her doorway looking down at her. “If you want any of your belongings you will have them packed and ready by first light. If you are not up and dressed by first light I will throw you into the back of the car naked,” he said and without another word he slammed her door closed. Emily could hear the lock as it clicked into place.

Emily sat on the floor in stunned silence for a few seconds and burst into tears. How had her life gone so wrong? What had she done to deserve this? How was she going to get away?

Gabriel and the others quickly made their way through the caves that the pups traveled through. They were easily able to follow their scents to see which route the pups had taken that morning. Gabriel had Marcus stopping and checking that various shields and spells were still in place as they traveled through the caves. Thankfully, with everyone focused on their mission and alert to possible attacks, Marcus and Sarah were not wanting to engage in idle chatter. Normally the two of them would never miss a chance to try to get under his skin about something. They had all grown up together. They knew that he was the Alpha King and they respected his position, but they were also not afraid of him like so many others. Gabriel was focused on the mission of getting Sebastian back, but his mind was also filled with other thoughts and worries. Gabriel had to make sure that he was not leaving the valley and to

Emily looked at the screen on her phone again to check the time. It was now just a little after 2:00 in the morning. She knew her uncle would be back up in a few hours to get her, but she could not find the motivation to pack. Everything that happened yesterday and that her uncle said kept replaying in her mind. When he first locked her in her room she had cried from the shock, pain, and unfairness of it all. How had things gone so wrong? Once she had collected herself she had raced to her cell phone to try to call for help, but of course her uncle had been smart enough to have the service turned off. She had no way of knowing when he had the service turned off on her phone since she had left it in her room all day yesterday while hiding out. He probably had it turned off when he realized she had left it in her room on purpose. Now her phone was nothing more than an expensive clock and music player.

At 6:00 sharp Emily was standing ready in the center of her bedroom when her uncle flung open her bedroom door with great flourish. Seeing her standing there packed, dressed nicely, and ready had the smile slipping off his face. Seeing the smile slipping off his face brought a smile to Emily’s face.“Good morning uncle. I hope that you slept well. I followed all of your instructions. I have everything packed and ready just like you asked me. I’ll ask Lord Rotterford if I can have the rest of my belongings shipped to his estate later since I only had three suitcases to pack everything in,” Emily finished brightly gesturing to the three suitcases lined up neatly beside her.Emily watched as her uncle’s face turned bright red. Are you here yet? Gabriel sent to Axel and Megan. He, Sara, and Marcus were just now coming up on the old witch clearing. They referred to that clearing by that name because centuries ago a coven of dark witches used to meet here and perform rituals that required sacrifices, typically human or some form of magical creature. The Witch's Council that came into power 500 or so years ago, had since outlawed the use of black magic. They had spells set to monitor if anyone uses black magic. If you were caught you could be stripped of your powers. Yes. We will be there in three minutes. We got here a little early and did some scouting around Rotterford’s. We might have overheard something interesting. Megan replied. Is it about Sebastian?

He’s gaining on you. Hurry. Faster. Faster. You need to run faster, Emily repeated to herself as she ran through the woods. She was running as fast as her legs would carry her. Emily was leaping over fallen trees, ducking low branches, dodging dense areas of underbrush, but she could still hear him chasing her. The faster she ran the closer he sounded. Emily was too scared to turn around. She swore that she could feel him breathing on her neck. Just as she felt like she could not run anymore and her legs were giving out, Emily tripped over a log that she tried to leap over. As her foot caught on the log she stretched her arms out to catch herself. As the ground was rushing up to meet her, Emily braced herself for the hard impact that she knew was coming.Gasping, Emily sat up quickly with her arms stretched out in front of her. Looking at the clock, Emily saw that it was 6:15. She was starting to wonder if Mr. Kingsley had forgotten to tell her that she was supposed to meet everyone downstairs. He had not seemed to like her at all. Maybe he is trying to get her in trouble with Lord Rotterford on the very first day before she even really meets him. Emily stood up and was heading toward the door when it was flung open. She quickly stumbled back to avoid being hit by the door. In the doorway stood a large, older heavier set man that was dressed in a suit. His face was red, and he was breathing heavily. Emily had a bad feeling that she was about to meet Lord Rotterford, and she did not make a good first impression. Emily went to speak when he cut her off yelling.“WHY ARE YOU JUST STANDING AROUND UP HERE? WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE PLAYING AT,” he yelled at her. Stepping into the room he leaned down and yelled in

Night was falling and Gabriel and the others were still no closer to finding Sebastian. Gabriel could tell that Sarah was becoming more and more worried the longer that it took for them to find him, but he also knew that they were all exhausted. This would be the second night that Sebastian has been with the hunters, no one had slept or eaten in over forty eight hours. They had been too busy running, driving, or searching during all of that time. It seemed they were going to have to search closer to Rotterford’s estate and possibly in the estate, but Gabriel knew that they needed to rest and eat first. If he and conri were struggling with exhaustion and hunger, he knew the others had to really be struggling. Gabriel knew that they could not chance making simple mistakes at this point due to exhaustion and hunger. He sent out a message for everyone to meet back at the SUV that Axel and Megan had brought down.

Emily was just starting to worry about Mrs. Kingsley when she heard the knob of her bedroom door starting to turn. Tensing Emily held her breath scared to see who might come through the door. Had Mrs. Kingsley told Lord Rotterford about her trying to leave? Had Lord Rotterford decided to come up here and see if she was following his directions? The door opened, and Mrs. Kingsley hurried and slipped in. She made sure to close the door quietly behind her. Emily let out the breath that she had been holding in a huge woosh and put her hand over her racing heart. “I know you said that you would be back, but you scared me,” Emily said a little breathlessly. ‘I was worried that Lord Rotterford had decided to come up and see if I was following his directions.” Emily wasn’t going to admit

“She’s waking up,” Emily heard a femine voice yelling right before she heard the pounding up feet and then her hand being held tightly. “Emily. Emily, can you hear me,” her mate asked in a trembling voice. The sound of his voice and the pain that was in it broke her heart. It took more energy than she would have ever thought, but Emily finally forced her eyes open. As soon as she could focus, she found her eyes locked with beautiful relief filled green ones. “Hi,” she managed to croak out with a small smile. “Hi beautiful,” Gabriel replied huskily as he leaned forward to kiss her forehead. “How are you feeling?’ “Thirsty and tired for some reason. Rica said that I have been out for three weeks.” Gabriel helped Emily to sit up a little so that she could take a few sips from the cup of water that was pushed into his hand. “Yes. I kind of figured we would have to do something like that. Do Gabriel and Conri know? Emily asked grimacing. Nope, Rica said. How much trouble are we going to be in for doing this?Loads. They might even kill us if we make it. Do you think that my grandmother would have suggested this if she thought we wouldn’t. No, but I also know that things can go bad quickly, Rica said hesitantly. Why are you so hesitant? Do you know something? I know a lot actually. There just isn’t anything that I can tell you right now. That was helpful. I know. All I can say is that we do need to survive. For Gabriel and Conri? And others…Rica said carefully. What others? I can’t say yet. Okay…so do you not want to save Agatha? I do want to save her, I just need you to be strong and to get us through this. Promise me. I promise. Should we tell Gabriel and Conri? I think we have to. They are going to have to give a lot of their energy to Agatha to heal us. Okay. Do you want to tell them? No.

“Angela, how are they,” Emily asked as soon as they made it back into the valley and then rushed to the hospital where all of the injured were receiving help. Emily was relieved to see that everyone that they passed at the hospital did indeed have minor injuries. “Not good,” Angela said, quickly swiping a tear from her cheek. “I can’t keep them in this state much longer, and as soon as they are no longer in this frozen state, they will quickly bleed out.” “Can’t I pull energy and give it to them to help them heal,” Emily asked sadly, as she looked at her grandmother and Agatha. Angela shook her head. “No, the bullets have done too much damage for them to recover from.” “Could we do surgery while they are frozen to repair the damage to give them a fighting chance,” Emily asked, refusing to give up. Angela sighed and slumped in a seat by Agatha’s bed. “Even frozen, the surgery would kill them. Rotterford knew what he was doing when he shot your grandmother. He missed her he

“You are right,” Emily’s uncle said, sighing heavily. “I know that saying ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I was wrong’ will not fix the mistakes that I have made.” “Then what do you want? The only reason that you are not dead is because my mate was hearing you out,” Gabriel growled. “I wanted Emily to know the truth, and I think I just wanted to clear my conscience.” “You came all of this way so that you could have a clear conscience,” Emily asked skeptically. “And so that you could know the truth,” her uncle said with a small shrug. “I am dying, so if you decide to kill me it won’t matter,” he laughed bitterly. “That might be better than what is coming. I have cancer in case you were wondering.” “I can’t heal you,” Emily said quickly thinking her uncle was hoping that injuring Lord Rotterford and finally telling her the truth would make her help him. She felt bad thinking that, but she also knew that she had to try to help Agatha and her grandmother if possible. She couldn’t help her uncle t

I was the fool that told the hunters where they could find your mother. I was blinded by jealousy of my brother. Emily wanted to close her eyes as she heard the gun fire, but she found that she couldn’t look away. Knowing that you are about to die is a funny thing. It is almost like time stands still. You have all of the time in the world to think about things, but in reality everything happens within seconds. Since Rica had tried to come forward when Jenna first placed the spell on them, Emily’s eyesight was much sharper. She could see every detail of the bullet as it came barreling toward her, but at the same time her mind took this opportunity to think about all of the things that she would regret. Emily hated the fact that she and Gabriel and Rica and Conri never really got a chance to enjoy each other. Hopefully they know how much they love them. Emily also hated the fact that she couldn’t save her grandmother. She had only come out of hiding after all of these years because of her. Just as the bullet was about to reach her, Emily heard another shot fired. Her eyes changed focus just in

“What in the world is that,” Emily asked. She didn’t realize that she had spoken aloud till Gabriel answered her. “I’m not sure what Rotterford has planned. I think that I hear something metallic mixed in with the sound of the trees moving, snapping, and falling.” “I hear it too,” Hunter replied, taking a step forward. “I don’t suppose that giants are real,” Emily asked, only half joking as she watched more trees shake and then give way to whatever was making their way toward them. “They are real,” Gabriel said, “but this doesn’t sound like a giant. If it was a giant you would know it.” “What do you mean by that,” Emily asked. “Giants are old,” Agatha said. “They are elementals. They are made of rock, water, and ice. If one of them moved you would know. When the ones made of rock move it makes the news because they have either caused an earthquake or a landslide.” “Oh,” Emily said as she felt the ground vibrating under them. I still think it could be a giant. It’s not, Ric

“Remember our deal,” Lord Rotterford said as Jenna fought to not roll her eyes while looking into the two-way mirror that he had given her to use to communicate with her during her trip to meet with Gabriel and the others. . “I remember,” Jenna said, trying to mask the frustration on her face and while trying to add a little tremor to her voice. “I know that my life depends on this.” “If you cross me, I will make sure that you die a very slow and painful death,” Lord Rotterford growled out one last time as they disappeared from sight. With a quick scream of frustration, Jenna threw the mirror at a tree and watched happily as it shattered. Hopefully she would get an additional seven years of bad luck for breaking that mirror, she thought ruefully. Rotterford threatening her with a slow painful death was a joke. He must not realize that she already wished that she could die. The only thing that kept her going was thoughts of Alice. She couldn't lert Alice down. If she didn’t help

An hour later everyone had made it to their assigned locations as far as Emily knew. She was waiting with Gabriel, Hunter, Agatha, and the rest of their core group. Always worried about an attack Gabriel was making sure to keep Emily blocked by him, Hunter, Samuel, and Axel, but they were also trying to keep it from looking obvious at the same time. Emily and Rica tried not to roll their eyes at the guys worrying about protecting them. She also knew that there were warriors all around them even though she could not see them. A few of the witches like Breanna, Agatha, and others could aparate warriors as needed, but due to the numbers needed, Gabriel and the others decided to find another way to have warriors able to be in multiple locations unseen. The solution that they found was a small charm that would allow the warriors to be invisible for up to four hours. This time frame allowed enough of the warriors to be set up and prepared if the hunters attack. The rest of the warriors wer
