I couldn’t see much of the pack from the window.
The house was surrounded by other houses, some with colourful gardens. There were more houses beyond with tall buildings. And in the distance, I could make out the tall trees of the forest that surrounded the houses. It looked a lot different than my old pack.I turned away from the window and glanced around at the room once again. It was small but cozy. There was a built-in closet across from the double bed with a chair and a small table next to it. The walls were painted a light blue with white wooden furniture and dark blue bedding. The room reminded me of something you would find in a guest house by the beach. After eating, I made the bed, braided my hair, and then tried to get some sleep, but failed. My mind was too busy.My arrival at my new home wasn’t exactly how I had imagined it. I thought that I would have been calm and level-headed to make a good impression. Not dressed in my night clothes, soaking wet and feeling like shit.June had been nice to me when she helped me warm up, but the look in her eyes hadn’t been welcoming.I looked down at the clothes I was wearing.A pair of yoga pants and a black T-shirt that was two sizes too big.Raising the material to my nose, I sucked in a deep breath. It smelled like..earth.Like earth after it rained, clean and fresh. My eyes fluttered closed as I sucked in another deep breath.I jerked in fright when someone knocked on the door.It opened before I could drop the shirt back into place.Keiran paused in the doorway, eyes widening slightly when they locked on me.“I…I…uhm…” I fixed the shirt and shifted from foot to foot.“Mom said that you haven’t left your room.” He stepped fully into the room. “You’re free to move around the house.”“T-thank you.” My eyes dropped to my clothes.Keiran cleared his throat, and gestured towards the bed. I sank down on the edge of it and watched him as he took a seat in the chair.“I called Rowan,” he said softly. “I wanted to make arrangements to pick up your stuff.” He paused. “I’m afraid…your cabin caught on fire early this morning.”“W-what?” I gasped.“He’s not sure how the fire started, but I’m afraid they weren’t able to get anything out in time.”I swallowed. “N-nothing?”“I’m sorry.”Tears filled my eyes. I bit my lip, trying my best to keep the sob from escaping.Nothing.I have nothing left. They probably didn’t even try to stop the fire or get anything out. I knew that they just stood there and watched everything going up in flames.Jumping to my feet, I tried to make a run for the bathroom, but Keiran was suddenly there pulling me against his chest. He said nothing as he held me.Once my tears dried up, I pulled away from him.“I-I wasn’t going to bring a lot of stuff,” I croaked. “J-just some clothes and the p-photo albums. Now…I have nothing.”Biting my lip, I raised my head to look at him with teary eyes.“You don’t need photos to remember all the good times or them,” he said softly. “The memories are all in here.”My eyes dropped to the hand he pressed to his heart. It wasn’t the same. Those were the only things I had left of them, and now it was gone.“I’ll send Lucas out to see if there’s anything we might be able to salvage,” Keiran muttered.“T-thank you.”He nodded, hesitated a moment, and then stepped forward to wipe a lingering tear away.“I know it’s not the best start to a conversation, and I should probably let you be, but I need answers, Cora. The sooner we talk about this, the sooner I can handle it.”I knew he was going to start questioning me, but I was hoping that I might have had more time to think about what I wanted to tell him.“Okay.”Keiran led me back to the bed and took a seat in front of me.“Dean,” he growled. “He was the one who is responsible for the bruise on your neck.”I nodded.“And you think that he was the one who took you from your bed?”I hesitated a moment before I nodded.“You didn’t see him, but you will be able to identify him by hearing his voice?”“Y-yes.”I shifted under the intensity of his gaze.“Does he have a last name?” he questioned.I wanted nothing more than to get them punished for all the years of hell they had put me through, but I was scared that if they got punished, they would find a way to get back at me.“Cora, in this pack I don’t tolerate bullying,” Keiran said. “If I find out that someone is being bullied, I take care of it immediately. Bullying won’t go without punishment.”Swallowing, I looked away from him.But Keiran gripped my chin and turned my face back towards him.“You don’t understand the seriousness of the situation, little red. They kidnapped you and dumped you in the forest on a full moon. You could have been killed, Cora.”Tears burned my eyes.“By t-those…They’re not like you,” I whispered.“No, they are not like us. They are rogues, soulless creatures whose only intent is to hunt and kill.”His thumbs stroked my cheeks.“We don’t have evidence,” I told him. “Alpha Rowan will demand evidence because Dean is his son.”Keiran froze. “Is that why he never did anything about the abuse?”I hesitated. “I-I never told him,” I admitted.“Why?” he growled.“Alpha Rowan already made special rules to accommodate me because my parents asked him to. It’s why they made fun of me. If I told on them, and they got punished because of me…” I left the sentence hanging in the air between us.“Did they ever get physical?” he asked.“A push or two, but they mostly just used their words.” I studied him, watching the shift of emotion in his eyes. “I don’t want you to do that.”He blinked at me. “Do what?”“Make special rules for me because I’m not like you.”Keiran pursed his lips and remained silent for a few minutes. “I won’t, but I draw the line when things start getting physical.”“Okay.”Keiran stood and walked over to the chair. He picked up a stack of papers and handed them over to me.“Everything you need for school. I chose your classes based on what your father told me. You are welcome to change them.”I stared down at the papers.School.If high school was anything like in the movies I watched, I preferred to stay at home.“It’s going to be another big change, but it will be a great way for you to get to know everyone,” he said. “I can arrange for someone to show you around school.”“No!” I exclaimed. “Thank you,” I said a little softer. His lips twitched. “You shouldn’t have a problem making any friends unless you’re a loner like Ryder.”I frowned.“My younger brother,” Keiran clarified. “He’s a year older than you.”“Oh.” I cleared my throat. “W-when do I meet him?”“He’s away at the moment but he should be back next week.” He smiled. “You already met Axel and Mom.”“They’ve been…nice.”“They take some getting used to.”“Do you…do you want me to call you uncle or alpha?” I asked him to break the silence that had fallen between us.“Keiran is fine.” His smile widened. “We have a few hours left before dinner. Why don’t we go shopping?”Shopping? My eyes widened and colour flooded my cheeks in shame. It took me only a second to realize that the only thing I owned was the night clothes I was wearing when they found me. I didn’t even have a pair of shoes! My eyes dropped to my feet.“I-”“Let me do this for you, Cora.”"I don’t have any money to pay you back,” I argued.“You don’t have to.” Keiran paused. “If you really want to, I’m sure we will think of a way.”“I don’t have any shoes.” I wiggled my foot.“I’ll find you some shoes.” Keiran opened the door. “Come on.”I hesitated.“This will also be the perfect opportunity to show you around your new home.”I was kind of curious about his pack. And it would do me good to get some fresh air.“Didn’t the doctor say I should stay in bed?” I asked as I stood.“He won’t know unless you tell him.” The smile slipped from his face. “Unless you’re feeling sick?"I shook my head. “I don’t,” I told him softly.“Come on, Cora.”Keiran’s pack was a lot bigger than Alpha Rowan’s pack. “Everyone in town is a shifter,” Keiran explained. “We occasionally get some human tourists, but they don’t stay long because our…town doesn’t have much to offer them. One of the pack rules is to never expose yourself to humans. We don’t want any hunters coming to town.”“You’ll have no problem with me,” I muttered. “You can misbehave, Cora,” Keiran said softly. Before I could answer him, he opened a door and gestured for me to enter. My eyes darted around, taking everything in. It looked like one of those expensive clothing shops you would usually find in the mall. “You can pick out anything you want.” Keiran followed me around as I took a look at the clothes. It was definitely expensive. “Season’s changing,” he muttered. “If you want, we can only get you some clothes for autumn and winter.”I bit my lip as I stared at the rack of thick winter jackets. It reminded me of Dad’s jacket. “Cora?”“C-can we go somewhere less…
Mine. My hold on Cora tightened as I snarled at him. She didn’t belong to him, she was mine. My mate. Only mine. But doubt started to fill me when his head lowered and he rubbed his snout along her cheek. A deep purr rumbled from his chest. Cora’s low whimper pulled me out of my shock. Growling, I gripped him by the scruff of his neck and jerked him off us. He instantly got to his feet and shook out his fur. My warning growl had him freezing, but not before letting out one of his own. Sitting up, I turned my attention towards Cora. She was pale and shaking slightly. I moved the strands of hair from her face and gripped her chin to turn her attention towards me. Wide jade eyes blinked up at me. She was scared, but she was trying her best not to show it. “K-Keiran?”“Are you injured?” I asked her softly. She hesitated too long before she shook her head. My eyes dropped, darting over her and then lingering on the hand she was favouring. It was the same wrist she had injured t
The doctor at Alpha Rowan’s pack never treated me when I got sick or injured. He claimed that he knew nothing about human illnesses and that I was not important enough for him to learn about them. Whenever I got injured, Mom would treat my wounds. And whenever I got sick, they had to take me to town to see a human doctor. But the doctor sitting in front of me, examining my wrist was nothing like the other doctors I had been to. She was gentle as she touched parts of my skin and put me at ease by asking me numerous questions. “Not broken,” she muttered as she lowered my arm to my lap. “But you’ve made the sprain worse.” Her eyes darted over to Keiran who stood leaning against the wall. “I gave you orders and I expect them to be followed, alpha.”“It won’t happen again, Olive.”“Better not,” she muttered as she stood. “I’ll see if I can find you a brace to wear to limit movement. You also need to try to keep weight off of it otherwise you’ll risk another re-injury.”“Thank you.” Oliv
School. My stomach twisted with nausea as I made my way down the stairs a week later. The doctor had given me the all-clear to go to school much to my disappointment. When I entered the kitchen it was to find only Keiran sitting at the table. My eyes darted around, taking in the various dishes. “I wasn’t sure what you like,” he muttered, standing.“You cooked?” I breathed, wide-eyed. He raised an eyebrow. “Yes, you didn’t think I could?”“No,” I told him honestly. “Dad couldn’t cook. It was always me or Mom that cooked for him.”Keiran pulled a chair out for me and then took a seat again. Placing a plate down in front of me, he gestured to the other plates. “Help yourself.”“Thank you.”I grabbed a slice of toast and took a small bite. I was too nervous to actually eat. But he went through all the trouble to cook and I wanted to show him that I appreciated it. “It’s important for a male to know how to take care of his mate which includes cooking.” He took a bite of bacon and slo
“Your brother adopted a human.”“I heard,” I muttered absentmindedly as I glanced around. “Have you met her?” Dale questioned. “No,” I lied. He already knew the answer. The whole fucking pack knew about it. Those who didn’t see it happen, already heard about it. My mate was the new human my brother adopted. Olivia’s daughter. I clenched my teeth and ran a shaky hand through my hair. My head ached, my body was sore and my wolf was still agitated. We hadn’t seen our mate in a week. Until this morning. She had run from me the moment she realized who she had run into, and I hadn’t seen her since. I was dying to get another whiff of her. But Keiran had warned me to keep my distance. I thought that with my heat over, he would allow me to seek her out. She belonged to me. And apparently to him. As well as Axel. I growled, gripping the table tightly. My claws dug into the wood which made people turn to look at me. I sneered at them, instantly making them hurry away. “What the
AXEL Hunger was gnawing at my stomach. It made it impossible for me to sleep even though my body and brain were beyond tired. I needed sleep. The fact that her scent filled nearly every room in the house was making it harder to resist. I had heard about this thing only once before and it had ended in disaster. Cora was a temptation being dangled in front of my nose and it was getting harder to resist. Giving up on trying to get some sleep, I got out of bed and entered the bathroom. My eyes locked on my reflection in the mirror, making me pause. Red was bleeding into the edges of my pupil, a sure sign of hunger. It was the reason I had been mostly avoiding my brothers and the little human. I didn’t want to scare her and I didn’t want to give them anything to worry about. They already had enough on their plate. Keiran was still trying to figure out why Cora got three mates after being rejected by that bastard and why Rowan hadn't spoken a word about Cora until Lucas showed up th
He had to be kidding.A smile was playing around his lips, but his eyes were serious as they stared into mine.“Me?” I repeated dumbly.Axel’s smile widened a few notches. “You.”“Two,” I whispered.I had gone from being rejected by one mate to suddenly having two mates. Frowning, I grabbed the book and scanned the contents inside.“You won’t find anything inside that book,” he muttered as he leaned back in the chair. “Keiran is trying to figure everything out.”“It’s never happened before?” I questioned.“Not that we are aware of.”Axel hesitated a moment before he stood. “Stay,” he ordered softly.A gasp fell from my lips when he suddenly disappeared into thin air. He was gone for only a few seconds before he reappeared again with a few books in his hand.“How do you do that?”His eyes darted over my face. “I use the shadows to move from one place to another. It makes traveling easier.”“Can you change into a bat?” My eyes trailed over his body.It made me take notice of what he was
I was struggling to breathe. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t suck enough air into my lungs.Twigs snapped under my feet and scratched my skin. There was a low growl from somewhere behind me. It was getting closer. I needed to run. Needed to get away from it. I glanced over my shoulder which was a mistake. My foot caught on something, sending me flying through the air and then hitting the ground. I cried out when I hit the ground. Rolling onto my back, I blinked up at the canopy of leaves high above me. “Run, Cora!”Mom’s voice had me rolling onto my stomach and pushing myself to my feet. My legs shook so badly that I could barely stay on my feet.“Run, baby!”Run. Run. Run. The monsters were coming. I hadn’t seen him. But Mom had. She told me to run as soon as she saw him. He hurt Dad. Tears burned my eyes. He was hurt. Hurt so badly. There was a lot of blood on the floor. Without realizing it, I had slowed down. It was a mistake. The monster snarled, and then he was
“Sweetling.”I frowned as Axel’s soft voice penetrated my dream. It wasn’t a nightmare like usual, it was a nice peaceful dream, one I didn’t want to wake up from. “Cora.”A groan slipped past my lips when he gently shook my shoulder. Forcing my eyes open, I blinked up at his face hovering close to mine. Axel gave me a gentle smile as he reached out to move the hair from my face. “You’re bleeding.”His words confused me even more. Axel pulled the sheets down and then gripped my arm and gently pulled me up. Frown deepening, I glanced around and then down at my body. Slipping his arm under my knees and the other around my back, he pulled me against his chest. I wrapped my arms around his neck but risked a glance back at the bed. Horror hit first and then embarrassment. Not only were my pajama bottoms covered in blood, but there was also blood on the bed sheets. I buried my face against Axel’s neck. “I’m a werewolf,” I mumbled. “I’m not supposed to get my period, am I?”“You are s
Ryder moved to my other side and slipped his hand in mine. Nothing was said between the three of us as we headed towards the stage that had been set up. Keiran was already there, making a joke about something. All the focus was on him which meant that nobody had seen Axel’s confrontation with his mother. We had arrived just in time to hear the end of their conversation. I glanced up at Axel. He was still mad, but at least he had managed to mask his expression. Although people were still wary of his crimson eyes. My heartbeat increased the closer we got to the stage. Axel’s hand slipped out of mine when we reached the stairs. He moved behind me as Ryder led the way up the steps. Keiran turned, eyes locking with mine. He smiled as he held his hand out towards me. “I would like to officially introduce Cora Marlin, our mate, and your new Luna.”I turned to smile at the people. “Tonight we’re not only celebrating Cora’s special day, but we will also be welcoming her to our pack.” He
Most of the pack was already gathered at the usual spot. Laughter and conversation filled the air. I sucked in a breath, trying my best to identify as many scents as I could. There was no sign of danger, but that didn’t make me feel any better. I knew how easily things could change. Cora’s hand tightened. My eyes snapped down to hers. She smiled at me, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Her scent had changed the moment we stepped foot out of the house. I tried talking Keiran out of making it a big deal but he insisted. This was an important day for our pack. They needed to see Cora holding her head high and acting at Luna. These pack dynamics still confused me. It was so different than how things were done in the Vampire nests. A shudder raced down my spine as memories flooded my mind. Cora suddenly stumbled. My hands instantly shot out to steady her. Our eyes locked and held. I realized with a start that she had paled. She looked sick. “What happened?” I questioned. “Are you fee
“You can’t hide in there forever,” Blue called from the other side of the door. “Come out and let me see.”I ignored her as I studied myself in the mirror. Blue had chosen one of the new dresses Keiran brought me without my knowledge. I smiled as I remembered our day at the mall. It was scary at first, but the longer we walked from shop to shop, the more I relaxed. He didn’t give my fears a chance to get the better of me. And he certainly spoiled me. I now had a lot of clothes, more than I owned before. Keiran even offered to pay if I wanted to get my hair and nails done. I agreed to have my hair cut but declined the offer to do my nails. There was no use wasting money on something I didn’t need. The bathroom door opened, startling me. Blue peeked around the door and then pushed it open wider. Her eyes widened as they trailed over me. “Wow,” she breathed. “You look beautiful.”“T-thank you.” I brushed my hands over my middle. “I’m not sure about wearing it though.”“Why not?”“
Maybe we should have talked to Cora first. I glanced over at her. It was supposed to be a surprise trip. Something to get Cora away from the pack so everything could be set up for her party. Not only were we celebrating her birthday, we were going to officially welcome her into the pack. She was already ours and the pack knew about her so the introductions weren’t necessary. But Demetrius suggested that we keep doing things traditionally. So here I was driving Cora to the human town under the pretense that we needed a few things for the party. Cora was tense. I could sense her wolf hovering close to the surface and I understood why. This was a big step for both of them. It was also considered a test. “We need more of those plastic plates,” I said. “I was thinking of getting a few extra cups and cutlery just in case.”“Is the whole pack going to be there?” “Yeah. Some will probably only stop by for the introductions.”She looked at me then, but her attention was pulled away when
As expected, the moment I fell asleep, my dreams turned into nightmares. I found myself jerking awake only to be lulled back to sleep by Keiran’s purring and Axel’s reassurance that I was safe. My dreams were a mess. It was a mix of being locked in that room and being tortured to waking up in my old pack with Dean as my mate. Somewhere during the third nightmare, I woke up to Keiran gone. Before I could question it, Axel and Ryder took control, distracting me by undressing me and giving me multiple orgasms. The last time I fell asleep it was sandwiched between Ryder and Axel with the blissful waves of my orgasms slowly fading. There was no nightmare after that. I woke up near noon feeling exhausted. There was a faint pounding behind my temples and my body ached but I pushed the pain aside as I slipped out of bed and headed into the bathroom for a shower. With my hair wrapped in a towel, I pulled on one of Keiran’s shirts and then left the room to search for my mates. The smell of
It looked like he didn't want to answer me. Why were they so secretive about it? Letting out a sigh, Keiran settled more comfortably on his stomach. I turned onto my side and waited. "I needed some time away from the pack," he said softly. "I asked Lucas to keep an eye on things and declined his offer for extra security. I was going to a human town and I thought that it would be safe." "It wasn't?" "I stopped for a drink at a bar, I'm ashamed to admit that I had a little too much." He paused. "Werewolves need to drink a lot of alcohol before we feel the effect of it. I lost count and before I knew it I could barely walk. Decided it was best to get back to the hotel I was staying at before I did something stupid." I waited a little impatiently for him to continue. "I got lost and ended up in an alley." Keiran closed his eyes. "My mind was a mess and I wasn't aware that I was being followed until they jumped on me. I struggled to fight them off and I was pretty smug about it unt
Guilt flooded me when I approached our house and spotted Lucas slowly straightening from where he had been leaning against the tree. It was almost three am and I was sure that he was dead tired. "Axel hasn't returned yet," Lucas said softly. "There's been no other movement.""Thank you," I said through our packlink. He nodded. "Do you want me to stick around?""Just open the door for me." I followed him to the front door and slipped inside the moment he opened the door. With a nod of thanks, I waited until the door was closed again before I ran up the stairs. The house was silent. Cora was probably asleep already which was good because I wasn't sure if I could look her in the eye and lie about everything that happened. Axel said that he hadn't told Cora about the other videos Dean had made of her. The kid had been stalking her for years. I was going to make him bleed over and over again to make him pay for all the shit he put her through. Entering my bedroom, I headed towards
"Why is it taking so long?" Ryder tried to grab me when I passed him but I avoided his hands and moved further away from him. I didn't want to stay in that room any longer, but I regretted not staying. Now we had no clue what was happening. "Do you think Keiran attacked Dean?" I asked Ryder. "What if he did and they decided to make his punishment worse?""Cora." Ryder stood and made his way over to me. He gripped my hips, spinning me around to look at him. "As Kelsey pointed out, the council is only there to advise Keiran. They can't punish him for anything."I swallowed, glancing at the door again. "They're fine."Sucking in a shaky breath, I stepped into Ryder and wrapped my arms around his waist. He wrapped his arms around me and buried his face against the crook of my neck. Calm washed through me from our bond, but it only lasted a few seconds before my anxiety started rising again. Ryder's lips parted and his tongue flicked out to lick my skin. I shuddered. "I can think of
