I knew it would be hot, but I was not expecting heat like this.  The humidity is killer, and I suddenly need to shower.  I am just glad to be off that fucking plane.  I knew the flight would be long, but I was not prepared for being on the plane for a whole fucking 22 hours.  I follow the signs to where the baggage pick-up is.  The only things I brought were my clothes and a few essential items I would need for school.  The rest of my stuff is in the room at my grandparent's house.  I have been living with them for the last two years.  Dad more or less kicked me out when I turned 16.

I need to stop referring to him as Dad, but he is the only father I know.  He is not my biological father.  He and my mother had been college sweethearts.  I don't know what happened, but they split up a few months after graduation.  Two years later, they ran into each other and rekindled their romance.  They were both still in love with each other.  Gary had a son, Riley, while he and my mother were apart.  Riley is a year older than me.  Mom didn’t care and accepted him, no questions asked.  Riley was a little over a year old at that time.  Two months later, Mom found out she was pregnant with me.  They thought Gary was my father, but that was not the case.

Mom had recently ended a relationship when she had run into Gary and was already pregnant with me, but she had no idea then.  They had no reason to think I wasn’t Gary’s, but it was blatantly clear I was not his child when I was born.  The first indication was my bright, sapphire blue eyes.  The second is my long, natural white hair.  I have been dyeing it different shades of blue since I was 14.  Mom thought it was beautiful, but it was one more thing about me that Gary despised.  Gary was pissed that I was not his child.  While he never abused me, he made it clear that he disapproved of me.  He more or less ignored me unless it was necessary to talk to me.  He isn’t on my birth certificate and refused when Mom suggested it.  It pissed him off that Riley accepted me and treated me like his sister.  Riley is the reason that Gary left me alone.  Gary would spew nasty remarks when I was around.  Once Riley and I were old enough, Riley told his father to leave me alone, and it wasn’t my fault that I wasn’t his child.  After that, he acted more or less like I didn’t exist, which was fine.  It hurt Mom that Gary treated me like this, but he treated her like a queen, so I shut my mouth.  Mom passed away when I was 16.  Riley had left for college, and after graduating a year early, Gary could do whatever he wanted with me.  A week before my junior year of high school, I came home to find all my stuff packed and sitting at the entry to the house.

__FLASHBACK__

“Why are all of my things sitting here?”  I asked.

“Because you’re leaving.”  Gary replies.

“You’re kicking me out?  Why?  I have done nothing to you.”  I tell him.

“You’re not my responsibility; therefore, I don’t want you in my house.”  Gary sneered.

“Mom would be pissed that you’re treating me like this.”  I point out.

The front door slams shut before he can say anything, and Grandpa and Grandma stand.  They are GAry’s parents and have, from the moment I was born, accepted and treated me like one of their own.  They hated how Gary treated me and voiced their thoughts on the issue.

“Sapphire what is going on?”  Grandma asks.

“Gary is kicking me out.”  I state.

Grandpa starts yelling at Gary that this is unacceptable and that he is an asshole.  Gary tells them I am not his child and he is not responsible for me.  He says he has a child and is attending college, and he doesn’t want some kid he has no ties to in his house.  The only reason I am here is because of Mom, and I know that.  Grandma and Grandpa are pissed, and they tell me that I can come live with them.  Grandpa makes a few phone calls, and soon there is a truck, and my shit is being loaded into it.  I take the house key off my key ring and chuck it at Gary.  I smirk when it hits him right between his beedy snake-like eyes.  I walk out with Grandpa and Grandma.

__FLASHBACK END_

I haven’t been back to that house since.   The whole family was pissed when they found out what Gary had done.  His older brother, uncle, aunt, and younger sister haven’t talked to him since.  Grandpa and Grandma haven’t spoken with him since then.  He is no longer welcome at family functions, and Grandpa even handed over the family business to my cousin Curtis and his husband, Tyler.

Riley was livid when he found out what his father had done.  I am sure he called Gary and ripped him a new one, but I wasn’t there to hear it, so there is that.  I am pulled from my thoughts when someone over the intercom announces that they will start offloading the bags from my flight.  I stand here waiting for my bags to magically appear when someone grabs my waist, causing me to jump and scream in surprise.

“Dammit, Sapphire, stop hitting me.”  Riley grunts.

“Then don’t be an asshole and scare the shit out of me.”  I hiss.

“Your sister is a right feisty little sheila, Riley.”  A guy says.

“You have no idea.  Sapphire this is Luke.”  Luke tells me.

“Hi, Luke.”  I chirp.

God, I hope not all of Riley’s friends look like this.  Luke, from what I have observed so far, Luke is a nice guy, but fuck is he huge.  He towers over my 5’4” frame and has seven or more inches on Riley’s 6’ frame. He also happens to have shoulders damn near as wide as I am tall.  The guy is massive!  Between the three of us, we can grab all my bags and drag them out to a large SUV that I am guessing belongs to Luke.  Riley lets me ride shotgun, allowing me to observe Luke more closely.  I tend to notice little things about everyone and everything.  Which I guess is good since I am an art major.  Besides being a giant, Luke has this shoulder-length wave hair, the color of caramel naturally highlighted by the sun, and platinum-colored eyes.  He spends a lot of time in the sun, evident by his skin's perfectly golden honey color.

In contrast, Riley has strawberry blond hair that ends slightly past his ears and golden brown eyes that he got from his mother.  He did inherit Gary’s strong jawline and facial structure, but Riley looks more like his biological mother.  I hear them both laugh when a gasp escapes.

“I thought you knew Grandma and Grandpa had bought us a house?”  Riley asks.

“I did, but I had no idea it would be this amazing or this big.  I told them I didn’t need a big place.”  I sighed.

“It isn’t that big.  It has five bedrooms and three bathrooms.”  Riley replies.

“That is way more than I need.”  I point out.

“It will be fine since I am living there with you.  Before you get angry with Grandma and Grandpa, it was my idea.  My roommates and I had to move out quickly a few weeks ago.  The apartment building we lived in had a significant plumbing issue, which fucked up the electrical throughout the entire building.  There is a room near the front which you can set up as your study room/art studio.”  Riley explains.

That made sense.  I don’t care that I am living with Riley.  The two of us get along and always have.  I am not saying we don’t fight, but it is rare, and generally, within the hour, we are over whatever it was we were fighting about.  Luke pulls into the driveway, and I climb out of the car.  I wait for him to open the trunk so I can get my shit out.  The house is two stories with a wrap-around patio on the second floor.  The main floor also has a wrap-around patio.   My jaw drops when I enter the house as it opens into a vast room.  I fall completely in love with the open concept, and I can’t wait to get into that enormous kitchen and cook.  We cart my bags upstairs, and I am surprised when I walk into the huge bedroom.

“Since you are the only girl living here, the master bedroom would be best for you,”  Riley tells me.

“Thank you.  I appreciate it.” I say.

Luke tells us that he needs to return to his place and will see me later.  Riley sets my bags on the bed and says he must finish a few things before his classes start.  I still can’t believe I am here.  While I loved my last college, I felt their art program was lacking.  Riley told me that his college in Melbourne, Australia had an outstanding art program.  He had me send him some of my work, and a few days later, the head of the art department contacted me.  They wanted me to attend their college.  I spoke with my grandparents about it; they thought it would be a fantastic opportunity.  I immediately went and spoke with an adviser at both colleges, and we got all the paperwork and everything else that I needed to be able to transfer.  I am thrilled to be here, and I think the change will do me some good.  I have always wanted to travel.

It takes me until after lunch to get my room how I want.  It made me smile when I saw how Riley decorated my room.  A king-sized bed is in the center of the room against the beautiful blue wall.  The remaining three walls are painted in an off-white color.  The bed looks antique-like and is sliver.  The furniture all looks antique-like, and the floor is hardwood.  Two large rugs are soft and remind me of the ocean with all the blues and greens within them.  One sits partially under my bed, and the other is under my desk, matching the other furniture.  Step out of my room and decide to explore the house.  There are two other rooms on this floor, both empty.  I know there are two bedrooms on the first floor, one being Riley’s.

“We should rent the other three rooms out.”  I say.

“Fuck, don’t sneak up on me like that.  That will probably happen, but not for a while.  I want to see what happens once classes start.  There is a possibility that a few of the guys on the team might need to find a new place to live, and if that is the case, then I want them to have first dibs on the rooms.  I won’t know until after everyone returns and classes start.”  Riley explains.

“That makes sense,”  I reply.

“I want to get settled before we take on any roommates.  It isn’t much, but there will be some culture shock and a slight language learning curve.”  Riley adds.

I have been studying everything about Australia, and while almost everything is the same, there will be some terminology that I have to get used to.  I leave Riley in the kitchen to explore the rest of the house.  I have no words to describe the wonder I find when I opened the French doors leading to the backyard.  It is enormous, and whoever did the landscaping did a fantastic job, along with the gigantic pool in the center of the yard with a lazy river running the backyard.  A cave system crosses over the lazy river on each side.

“Our grandparents thought you might like this, so they designed it,”  Riley tells me.

“This is beyond anything I could ever imagine,”  I whisper.

“I am going to give you a few days to get acclimated, but Friday night, I and a few of my teammates are going out to the local pub, and yes, you can come.  The legal drinking age is 18, so you will be fine.  I would like you to meet them so you know a few people before you start your classes.  I am unsure if our classes will cross, but my friend's classes might.”  Riley comments.

“Yeah, it would be nice to know a few people so I am not alone when I start my classes,”  I say.

I know that Riley is on the hockey team.  Having an ice hockey team in a somewhat tropical country seems weird, but it is what it is.  We spend the rest of the day arranging the house.  We had some new furniture delivered, and I was impressed that Riley did an excellent job of picking it out.

I was unprepared to hear so many voices when I entered the house.  I went to the store.  Riley lived as a bachelor would, meaning we had no food in the house.  I borrowed his car and drove to the store.  Luckily, it is only about 10 minutes from the house.  I was shocked to hear all the yelling as I opened the door from the garage to inside the house.  Once it quieted down, I yelled at Riley to help me carry all this food.  I was surprised when Riley walked out, followed by a guy and a girl.  I let out a squeal when I saw the last person walk out.

“You know Ace?”  The guy asks.

“Yes, Sapphire and I went to high school together before Mom was transferred back here,”  Ace answered.

“That is cool.”  The guy states.

“I apologize for the guys; they are horrible at introducing people.  My name is Lina, and this is Arlo, my boyfriend.”  Lina tells me.

The five of us make short work of carrying in the groceries.  Lina helps me put them away while the guys return to watching the soccer game.  Lina and I sit and talk while the three guys yell at the tv when the referee makes a call they disagree with—typical men.  Lina and I hit it off, and I am glad.  I didn’t have many girlfriends back home.  Most thought I was the weird one cause of my dyed hair, nose ring, and tattoos.  I ask if any of this bothers her.

“Hell no, I love your hair, and most of my friends dye their hair and have tattoos and body piercings.  We don’t care about that kind of shit here.”  Lina tells me.

I smile at her.  I can already tell that I am going to be just fine here.  I am unsure what will happen once I graduate, but something tells me I may have found my new home.  I still hear the idiots in the other room yelling at the tele.  I shake my head at them while Lina giggles.  Yeah, Lina and I are going to be good friends.

I wipe the steam from the mirror. It is the last weekend before classes start back up. I grab a towel wrapping it around my waist. I have no idea how long I stand there before someone starts pounding on the door. I shake my head as I open the door. Arlo is standing there with a disgruntled look on his face. I slide past him, heading for my room. I heard him grumble, but I was unsure what he said. I close the door to my room, but that doesn’t stop the loud bass from thumping from the floor below me. I slip on a pair of boxer briefs and then a pair of cargo shorts. I pull a dark green t-shirt over my head before slipping my feet into my trainers. We are meeting Riley and his sister at the pub. Luke and Arlo are the only two that have met her, and from what they have told us, she seems like a good person. Everyone is ready to head out as I walk into the main room. There are ten of us that live in this house. Luke, Arlo, and I decided a month or so ago that we needed to find

Well, my first week here is over. What I was expecting was far from what I was expecting. I am excited since most of my classes will challenge me in a good way. So far, I am enjoying the classes, but that will change as the semester progresses. I was anxious when Riley told me that we were going to some local pub and I would meet most, if not all, of the hockey team. I am not antisocial, but I don’t like big crowds. I was thrilled when I saw Lina snaking her way through the crowd. All the guys seemed nice. I thought my heart would punch through my chest when I saw Dylan. My brain shut down when his steel-grey eyes locked with mine. He is hands down the sexiest guy I have ever seen. He has to be about a foot taller than my 5’4” frame. His steel-grey eyes pop against his naturally lightened dark blonde hair, which is longer on the top and shaved up the sides. I felt like an idiot when I ran into him coming out of the bathroom. I thought I broke my nose on his chest, which b

As I slowly gain consciousness, I roll over and bury my face into a pillow. By the scent alone, I can tell I am in my bed. I rub the sleep from my eyes as I sit up. Yup, I am in my room. I remember leaning on someone at the pub, but my memory is blurry afterward. I walk into the kitchen to find Riley standing at the cooktop. Riley is a decent cook. I pour myself a cup of coffee as he glances at me over his shoulder. I can fully admit that Riley is hot. I can see why he enamors the girls here. “Where are you off to?” He asks. “I am going to walk around. I need to take some pictures for a class, and I want to find places around here that fit the requirements for the project.” I answer. “Ok, just remember we will have new roommates when you come home, so don’t freak out if you run into someone when you walk in.” Riley tells me. “Ok, I will be back later.” I say. I shut the door behind me as I head for the gym. I decide to get some training in before I go exploring.

It has been a week since Luke, Arlo, and I moved in with Riley and Sapphire. I am unsure what happened, but Sapphire has been distant all week. My eyes damn near popped out of my head when I walked into the kitchen and saw her standing in the kitchen wearing those tiny little shorts and a tank top. All that silky, lightly tanned skin was on display, and before I knew it, I was standing behind her with my hands on her hips. The sparks flowing through my hands when I touched her made me shiver. I smirked when I felt her shiver in my hands. I was about to slide my hands around her perfect waist when I heard the others making their way to the kitchen. I stepped back from her as the others walked into the kitchen. “Will you get your head back into practice?” Chance yells. “Piss off!” I yell back. I hear Keegan laughing like the hyena he is as I skate toward Riley. Riley had a smile on his face as I stopped beside him. I am about to say something when our coach yells at us to

My head rests on the tub's back as I soak in my bath. This weekend is damn near over, and now I am expected to attend a barbie at Dylan’s parent’s house. I tried to get out of attending this several times over the last week, but nothing I said convinced them that I wouldn’t be able to come. I climb out of the tub, wrapping a towel around me. I still can’t believe we ran into the guys at the club the other night. Lina had asked me to come over, and after that moment in the kitchen between Dyaln and me, I was more than happy to get the fuck out of the house. A shiver racks my body when I remember his lips on my neck and his hands on my bare skin. His touch left a trail of fire everywhere he touched. I knew something was up when I walked into Lina’s place, and our other friends were there. I was unsurprised when they forced me into a chair and did my hair and make-up. I was surprised when they did light makeup, but when Lina handed me that dress, I damn near had an anxiety attac

I look at my phone. I just got off the phone with Riley, and again he isn’t coming home for Christmas, which is only a month away. I know it has nothing to do with money since our family has a private plane, and he would use it. I haven’t seen my son since he left for college in Australia. I still don’t understand why he chose to attend college so far away from his family. Our relationship wasn’t always strained. It wasn’t until he was old enough to understand why I didn’t want that damn girl in my house. I didn’t care that she was Melyssa’s daughter. I was excited when Melyssa told me she was pregnant and even more excited when we discovered she was having a girl. I had always wanted a daughter. All my excitement went down the drain when she was born. When I saw her full head of white hair and those bright sapphire blue eyes, I knew she wasn’t mine. I knew that Melyssa had ended a relationship not long before we met again. I wasn’t mad at Melyssa because I knew she had no

These last two weeks have been trying. Lina came over and stayed with me last weekend since the guys had an away game, and I didn’t want to be alone in the house. The guys have the weekend off this weekend, but Riley and Luke have to go out of town for some class project. I am tempted to call Lina and have her stay with me again, but she and Arlo are doing something I care not to know about. She said something about the two of them and a romantic weekend. That leaves me alone in the house with Dylan. I am not sure how this is going to go. Walking to class, I notice Karli wrapped around some tall brunette guy. I haven’t seen him before, but there are numerous people here, and I haven’t been to a few spots on campus, so his classes may be on the opposite side of the campus from mine. I continue to class. “Well that was an interesting class.” Janeyssa comments. “Our professor seemed to be in a bad mood or something.” I state. “What are you doing tonight?” Janessya asks.

I couldn’t help but smirk when I walked out into the living room. I opened the door to her room, and as I suspected, I was the only person at home. I knew she would do something like this. I called Riley to let him know what happened, and he told me that he and Luke would be back today. I knew they weren’t thrilled with this trip, making it easier for them to return early. I sent Sapphire a text. I am sure she is with Janessya. I had recognized two of the assholes that were harassing the women last night. They had been the ones that started shit at my parent's house that day at their Barbie. I knew Dad had taken pictures of them. He told me he was going to show cousin Anthony their picture. I agreed with Dad when he said that they were mafia but not from ours. I told Dad I bet they were from the States, and he agreed. I knew he was meeting with Cousin Anthony and his second-in-command. I am sure they would include Carmine and Jack, his second-in-command. That’s when I re

Riley -One Year Later- I stand here in our backyard watching the chaos unfold. We are celebrating my son, Niko’s birthday. He turns one today. I look over as I hear the door to the house open to see Sapphire and Dylan walking out. Sapphire has their eight month old son, Jayson, in her arms. He is the perfect mix of the two of them. He has blond hair, the perfect mix of Sapphire’s white blond hair and Dylan’s dark blonde hair. Jayson has his mother’s sapphire blue eyes, but you can see flakes of steel-gray in them. He is going to be a ladies man when he grows up. He flirts with all the ladies and all the ladies love him. Sapphire sets him down besides Yasmin and Jack’s twins and Niko. Niko and Jayson are only three months apart which I like. The twins and little Alaynia just turned two years a couple months ago. There are way more people here than I thought there would be, but I guess since Niko and I share a birthday it is to be expected. I walk over to where my beauti

Dylan-6 Months Later-“For fuck sake she is a moody sheila.” Luke says.“I will tell Sapphire you said that and we shall see how she responds.” Riley comments.Luke shoots him a glare. I shake my head at the two of them. We are having a dual baby shower/gender reveal. Riley and Janessya are the other half of this baby shower/gender reveal. They already know they are having a boy and Janessya is due any day now. My precious jewel is six months along and looks stunning with her bump. She woke up two hours later after arriving at the hospital all those months ago. I let her rest overnight before telling her that she was pregnant. To say she was shocked would be an understatement. She shut down and refused to speak for hours. I was getting worried when Jack walked in and asked what was wrong. She burst into tears and told him that she was pregnant. She was pissed that we knew the night before, but didn’t tell her. Thankfully she calmed down after talking about it. I know

We knew the girls were up to something, but never in my wildest thoughts did I think they would plan something like this. Sal had come to us and told us that they were planning something, but he had no idea what they had planned. Keegan told us that he had seen all of them over at Ace’s house along with another guy that none of us knew. No granted we don’t know every friend that they have so it could be someone from one of their classes that they had. I opened my phone and the app that I have to track my precious jewel. I gave her a necklace and pendant. The pendant has a tracker in it. I am pretty sure she knows it is there, but she hasn’t said anything to me. I don’t care either way. Knowing I can find her if shit goes down keeps my stress level normal.“I don’t like this. These last two weeks have been interesting. We told Carmine, Anthony, and Dad about Aria and who she said she and her father are. They confirmed what she told us was true and that her father was a close friend and ally of theirs. We even brought Aria to meet with them and Aria even called her father during the meeting. Emery was able to do something with her computer and we all saw him on the tv in Dad’s conference room. After that we let her in on our plan. I don’t think the guys fully trust her, but they are coming around. “I still can’t believe that Janessya’s parents cut her off like that.” I sneer. “I know, but they were against her being with Riley in the first place, why I don’t know. Don’t worry, Riley will make sure she and their child are taken care of and I know your grandparents have offered to pay for her school.” Dylan replies. Janessya and Riley had invited everyone to dinner a week ago and announced that they were not only expecting their first child but t

I love Dylan and the rest of the guys, but if they think they are being sneaky they are sorely mistaken. They might as well rent a fucking bill board and advertise that they are planning to try and catch Mateo and his group of dipshits. They have been covertly, well they think they are being covert, around trying to come up with a plan to catch Mateo in the act. We are over at Lina’s house. Emery’s fingers are flying across her keyboard as she checks on what those assholes are up to. “Do Gareth and Elias have any idea that you know they are involved in all of this?” Emmy asks.“No, I haven’t let on that I know they are the ones that were spying on me and that I know they are the ones that were helping to try and break me and Dylan apart.” I replied.I wasn’t initially suspicious of them when we first met in class, but both of them gave me a weird vibe. Elias more so than Gareth, but when we returned to class after our holiday break they were acting even stranger than before.

I can help but stand here and stare at my precious jewel. She is asleep on our bed in our house. We finally finished putting everything where we wanted it. I won’t lie, I was a little worried when I, more or less, gave her full permission to do with the house what she wanted. The only rooms I made sure were ready for her were our bedroom and the room I had turned into an art studio for her. I smile when she turns over and starts trying to find me. I climb back into the bed and pull her against me. She lets out a sigh and melts into me. Things have been quiet, and while I am glad for that it also bothers me. I hate this waiting around shit. I shift to lay on my back and Sapphire follows me laying her head on my chest. “No, it’s too early.” Sapphire whines. “My precious jewel is almost ten.” I snicker.“SHIT!” She states.I laugh when she jumps out of bed running into the closet to grab some clothes and then into the bathroom. I have been here for two weeks and I know that I am going to have to go back to the States soon. My father has been hounding me trying to find out where I am. I am sure he is looking for me, but since I told him I was going to travel around Europe to clear my head he has been trying to find me. I knew he wouldn’t, but he doesn’t know that. I also had work I needed to get back to. I want to bring Karleena with me, but I know if I did that Dad would know that I was here if I were to bring her home with me. “Hey, I am not angry. I know I can’t go back with you, no matter how badly I want to. We have to play this right if our plan is going to work.” Karleena says. The two of us are lying in her bed. We had woken up to her phone going off. She is cuddled into my side with her head on my shoulder as her fingers trace the lines of my muscles. I didn’t think this idea through. It sounded great when I said something to Dylan about it, but I didn’t realize how much work this was going to be. I watch as the delivery guys place the last piece of furniture in the house before they leave. Dylan and I have been furniture shopping since our date three nights ago. We talked to Dad and Richard, they agreed that it would make them think that we are not worried about them. They weren’t thrilled with the idea, but they also didn’t tell us not to move into the house. Dad, Carmine, and Anthony left this morning for something in Greece or Italy. I am not sure which country they had to travel to. I let out a sigh as I looked at everything. Most of the furniture had already been delivered, but these few pieces had been out of stock when we ordered them, and they just came back in stock yesterday. I wasn’t expecting to have them arrive this soon. “Don’t worry my precious jewel, the guys are going to come over later and help us arra

I shivered as his breath floated across my ear. Dinner had been amazing, and I was amazed that Dylan was able to reserve a table at that restaurant. I know for a fact that there is at least a three or four month waiting list to get a table there. The food was delicious, making me want to come back as soon as we could. I couldn’t stop staring at my ring. I had a feeling that he was up to something, but I was not expecting this. The ring is gorgeous. The center stone is a large four carat tear drop shaped sapphire with diamonds that decrease in size as they circle the band. The band is rose gold and fits my finger perfectly. I was jolted from staring at the ring when the car stopped. I knew the house, but I wasn’t sure why we were stopping here. I did notice a few new pieces of furniture as we entered. “Why are we stopping at your house?” I asked.“The last part of your surprise is in there. Come on precious jewel, our night is just getting started.” He whispered in my ea
