Klein groaned softly as the gentle chirping of birds outside his window pierced through the fog of his sleep. His eyes fluttered open, and he tried to sit up, only to be stopped by a heavy weight resting on his arms. He glanced down, half-expecting to see Evangeline—she often fell asleep beside him in her exhaustion from caring for him.

But instead, he found Daphnie nestled beside him. Her eyes fluttered open, and she greeted him with a warm smile. “Good morning, baby,” she said, leaning in to kiss him gently on the lips.

The unexpected kiss caught him off guard, and confusion briefly clouded his mind. He remembered that Evangeline had been adamant about keeping Daphnie out, so how was she here? But he shook off the thought anyway and let the confusion drift away, replaced by a surge of relief and contentment.
