It was only a simple visit that took an hour or two, but the energy they expended in treating these two guests felt like they did some heavy manual labor. They had to be on their guard because they weren’t certain about the two’s purpose. They could only guess at it and involve themselves in a play of words and double-meanings in order to glean something from them.

It wasn’t an easy feat. Ellaine felt tensed the duration o their meeting. Every time Ellaine felt that she could finally relax, she was given a reason to be tensed again. Her father-in-law has a way with words that makes it quite difficult for someone like her to parry. <
