Chapter 43

Ryan figured he needed to speak to Jessie. He hadn't seen or spoken to her all day—actually, not since last night’s incident. He felt like he owed her an apology, at least for how things had transpired. Leaving her mid-conversation to answer his mom’s call had been careless. He could have handled it better.

Now, as he sat at the café with Lana, he found himself distracted, tapping his fingers against the table while Lana was completely busy with taking pictures of their food. He sighed. Somehow, she had convinced him to buy lunch for both of them, and now she was treating their meal like a personal photoshoot.

"Are you planning to eat that or frame it?" Ryan asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted the angle of her phone.

Lana smirked but didn’t look up. "Food this pretty deserves appreciation." She snapped another picture. "Besides, you paid, so I get to enjoy it however I want."thanks for buying by the way , you owed me after all

Ryan rolled his eyes, but his mind was still elsewhere. He leaned back in his seat, his thoughts drifting back to Jessie. Finally, he asked, "Hey, have you seen Jessie today?"

Lana stopped mid-photo, looking at him over her phone. "I should be the one asking you that," she said, arching a brow. "I was left at Zach's place, *remember*?" You left me there

Ryan groaned. "No, you weren’t. You chose to stay. You made it pretty clear you wanted to."

Lana shrugged. "Yeah, you’re right," she admitted, popping a fry into her mouth. "But no, I haven’t seen her. I went straight to class after that, then just hung around until *you* called me, and we’ve been together for the past few hours."

Ryan sighed, rubbing his temples. "Great. That means she’s probably avoiding me."

Lana gave him a knowing look. "She wasn't going to let herself be disturbed by the image of Ryan and Jessie

Well, there is something you are not telling me , what happened to you and her ? Did you ditch her or try to kiss her last night?"

Ryan groaned again. "It wasn’t *like that*. Nothing like that happened. My mom was calling and I had to go. I was kind of in a hurry , so I told her goodbye abruptly and didn't really have a choice."

Lana rolled her eyes. "Please, Ryan. You *always have a choice. You could’ve texted her, tell her it was something important

Lana couldn't believe she was actually saying this to Ryan , a part of her wanted to sabotage this but she didn't have the strength for it at the moment

Yeah you are right , was just upset with the whole incident and went straight to sleep , I feel like I should apologize to her or something

As always Lana felt irritated by it

She forced a smile, well that is nice ,why don't you call her then , if you are in such a hurry to talk to her

Yeah that's right , Ryan whipped out his phone and called, it didn't go through

Dang, the call isn't going through, he said to Lana

You see to forget how terrible the reception her is and it's almost dark also, it's going to be bad

Hmm, ryan sighed , then smiled or better still how about I follow you to your room and them apologize to her in person

"Arghhh," Lana groaned, throwing her head back dramatically. "Are you seriously willing to do that much?"

She couldn't believe Ryan was considering this. Marching all the way to their dorms to apologize? It felt a little over the top. The mere thought of him and Jessie having some big emotional moment—and possibly even kissing—made her stomach turn. She wasn't sure why, but suddenly, she was very against this whole idea.

"I personally don’t think it’s such a bright idea," she added, crossing her arms.

Ryan leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Come on, Lana. It’s a great idea. I’ll just go over there, apologize properly, and make things right."

Lana narrowed her eyes. "Ryan, I need you to relax for a second. Have you even asked her to be your girlfriend yet?"what do you mean by make things right , sounding like you cheated or something

Ryan hesitated, shifting in his seat. "No, not really," he admitted. "I was planning on asking, but I just haven’t found the right time yet. But I’m certain we connected yesterday."

Lana gave him a skeptical look. "Connected?? Really, Ryan? Are you sure you’re not doing too much at this point?"

She leaned back, shaking her head. "Going to our dorm sounds desperate. Trust me, showing up unannounced isn't going to win her over. If anything, you might just freak her out."

Ryan scoffed. "No, it doesn’t! I will be going with you ,it's just going to be like a case of me following you to your dorms then seeing herIt’s a good gesture, and besides…" he smirked, sitting up straighter, "you’re going to help me out with it."

Lana looked at him in shock"Excuse me? Help you?"

"Yes," Ryan said matter-of-factly. "You know Jessie better than I do. You can make sure I don’t say anything stupid."

Lana groaned again, rubbing her palms "I don't know her any better ,just the same duration of days like you Ryan, this is such a bad idea."

"Or it’s a genius idea," he countered, his face lit up with a grin.

She rolled her eyes. "I hate you sometimes."

Ryan chuckled. "No, you don’t. I Know, come on, help me plan this out."

Lana sighed, knowing she was already getting roped into this madness.

"Fine. But if this goes terribly wrong, don’t say I didn’t warn you."

"And what are you even planning to do, anyway?" Lana asked, raising an eyebrow at Ryan.

Ryan leaned back in his chair, rubbing his chin as if he had it all figured out. "I was thinking... maybe I’d get her a little note, some chocolates—something sweet, you know? Then I’d apologize, and after that, I’d ask her to be my girl."

Lana blinked at him. "Wait, hold up. So, you're planning to bribe her with chocolates, mumble an apology, and then—boom—ask her to be your girlfriend?"is that not a bit extra

Ryan rolled his eyes. "It’s not bribery, it’s a gesture!"

Lana snorted. "It’s a disaster waiting to happen."

"You don’t know that," Ryan argued. "Jessie might like romantic stuff, right? It shows I’m making an effort."

Lana sighed, shaking her head. "Fine. But don’t say I didn’t warn you when this crashes and burns."

Ryan grinned and shot up from his seat. "Come on, let's go get the stuff before you change your mind."

Lana groaned but stood up anyway. "I already regret this."

This was the kind of things she was willing to do for Ryan. Even if it hurt her

They walked to the campus convenience store, which had a small section for gifts. Ryan paced in front of the shelves, inspecting different chocolates as if he were picking a diamond ring.

"Milk chocolate or dark chocolate?" he asked, holding up two options.

Lana gave him a tired look. "Are you serious? Just pick one, Ryan."

"It matters!" he insisted. "What if she prefers one over the other?"

Lana grabbed the milk chocolate from his hand. "Everyone likes milk chocolate. You're overthinking this."

He sighed dramatically. "Okay, fine. But what about the note? Should it be funny? Romantic? Casual?"

Lana rolled her eyes. "Dude, make it simple, the gesture is already extra and you definitely don't need more .just write something simple. Like, ‘Hey, I was a jerk, and I’m sorry. Want to be my girlfriend?’"

Ryan groaned. "That’s so basic!"

"Exactly. Because this doesn’t need to be a full-blown grand statement. Just apologize and ask her out like a normal person."

Ryan grabbed a small greeting card and a pen from the counter, stuffing them into his basket. "Alright, alright. Let’s check out and head to the dorms before I get more nervous

Chapter 44The walk to Jessie’s dorm was quiet, aside from Ryan mumbling to himself as he rehearsed his apology."Hey, Jessie, I was a jerk yesterday… no, that sounds too formal… Jessie, I messed up, but I really like you… ugh, too desperate."Lana shook her head, she was scrolling through her phone watching him stress over every word. "Dude, relax. Just be yourself.""Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to put your heart on the line."She smirked. "Nope and I don't think I ever will be , which is why I am here getting hurt over all this , she said to herself But I am the one who told you this was a bad idea."They reached the dorm building, and Ryan took a deep breath. "Okay. Let’s do this."Lana stood back, arms crossed. "Good luck, lover boy."Ryan shot her a glare before heading inside. As he walked down the hall, Ryan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Chapter 45 It was quite late into the night, almost past 11, when Olivia finally returned from her date. She quietly pushed open the door to their dorm, careful not to wake Mia, who was already fast asleep. The lights in the room were turned off save for the bedside lamp, which was left on by Sophia, who was still up, scrolling through her phone.Sophia looked up as Olivia tiptoed in, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Well, well, look who finally decided to show up," she teased, sitting up and patting the bed beside her. "So, are you going to spill, or am I going to have to drag it out of you?"Olivia grinned as she kicked off her heels, stretching her tired feet. "Oh my God, Sophia, it was amazing!" she whispered excitedly, settling onto the bed. "I don’t even know where to start.""How about from the beginning?" Sophia said, raising an eyebrow. "Glad it was that nice. Like, what even took you so long? I was beginning to think Jake kidnapped you or something."Olivia laughed

Chapter 46Lana had just turned the corner when she saw a stranger leave her dorm room. A guy she had never seen before. Tall, dark hair, a confident stride—definitely not someone from their usual circle. She watched as he casually walked down the hall, disappearing around the corner. Her lips curled slightly, both in amusement and irritation. So this was the guy Ryan saw Jessie with. The reason Ryan had spent half the night crashing out Lana wanted to say something to Jessie about it, but then again, what was the point? She wasn’t going to stir up unnecessary drama. Chapter 1: The AnniversarySophia hummed a soft tune as she parked her car in the driveway, her hand instinctively going to her swollen belly. She looked over at the bags of groceries and gifts that lined the passenger seat. Today was her and Ryan's fifth wedding anniversary, and despite the growing discomfort of the pregnancy, she wanted everything to be perfect. The sweet fragrance of fresh flowers filled the air as Sophia stepped inside their cozy home, struggling to balance the bags. She placed them on the counter and admired the small setup she had planned: a bouquet of white roses, Ryan's favorite cake, and a heartfelt handwritten card she had poured her soul into. She rubbed her belly gently. "Your dad's going to love this," she whispered, smiling. But in that instant, her calm was broken at the sound of heavy footsteps approaching. Ryan literally stormed into the kitchen, his face twisted with rage. He had a photo clutched in his hands, and his knuckles were white from the gri

Chapter 2: A Dangerous Choice"Your wife is in critical condition. She suffered severe trauma to her abdomen, and her injuries have put both her life and the baby's at significant risk. We need to act quickly, but…" He paused, his expression heavy. "You'll have to decide. We can only prioritize saving one—Sophia or the baby. The enormity of the decision slammed down on Ryan, shutting his mind off for a while. His lips moved but said nothing. Before he had even begun to sort his brain out, Eleanor surged forward, voice firm and steady."Save the baby," she told the doctor without turning an inch in her direction. "That child is this family's future. That counts.""Mother, shut up!" Ryan finally snapped, anger blowing up inside him. "I decide.Eleanor turned to him, her eyes narrowing. "Decide wisely, Ryan. That woman has already caused enough harm. Do you really think she's worth more than your own child?"Ryan clenched his fists, the weight of his mother's words pressing down on him.

"He's your son."Ryan's face twisted in rage as he threw forged paternity results at her feet. "Don't you dare lie to me, Sophia!" he yelled. "Lana showed me the proof. You're disgusting. Carrying another man's child and pretending it's mine?"Before Sophia could utter a word, Lana stepped forward, her expression perfectly masked with pity. "I never thought you'd stoop this low, Sophia," she said, her voice dripping with false sympathy.Grief became fury in an instant. "I know you did this, Lana!" she screamed, rising from her seat. "You forged those results. You're trying to destroy my life!"Lana scoffed, moving closer to Ryan. "Ryan, you see how delusional she is? She's trying to blame me for her mistakes."Ryan stared up at Sophia with boiling anger. "Enough of your lies, Sophia! You disgust me!"Before

Chapter 4 "What more do you want from me, Ryan? You and Lana already conspired to take everything from me," Sophia said as she dropped the bag to the floor in a fit of rage. "You made your decision already. You want me out, and I'll leave." "But Sophia, I don't want to leave you like this. Not like I care anyway, but you have nothing. I want you out of my life, but that doesn't mean I will be heartless about it," Ryan said to her. Lana stood closely behind, wondering why Ryan was suddenly indecisive about letting her go. Some part of her couldn't help but think Ryan still had a soft spot for Sophia, even despite all her efforts. She walked forward toward the arguing couple and decided to chime in, faking affection as usual. "I know things have gone bad, Sophia, but listen to Ryan. He is only looking out for you," Lana said to her. "Oh, don't you dare, Lana! Don't you start with the fake emotional nonsense, acting like you care!" Sophia snapped at Lana in a fit of rage. "Yo

Still, they managed to make it work, just like they managed to do with everything. The kitchen had two gas stoves and some pots. It was all they needed, and they were satisfied with it."So come on now, cousin, start talking," Sophia pressed Justine further."Why are you in such a hurry to let me tell you everything? At least let us light up the stove first and begin cooking," Justine said to her, being hesitant.Sophia hurriedly grabbed the lighter, set the stove along with a pot and water, then turned to her cousin. "Now spill the beans.""Alright, tiger, you might want to slow down and reserve the ene

Her heart was still racing a little from the excitement of the interview, and the thought of actually getting the job gave her a sense of accomplishment. She quickly pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened their group chat."Hey guys, I might be resuming work here anytime soon," she typed, her fingers moving over the keys for a moment before hitting send. The little dot indicating that the message had been delivered made her stomach have a sensation Mia was the first to reply, sending a string of celebratory emojis. "Congratulations, girl! It was never in doubt," she wrote, and Sophia couldn’t help but grin at the message. Mia always knew how to make her feel good about herself. Sophia stared at her phone, waiting for Olivia’s response, but there was no reply yet. It seemed Olivia wasn’t online at the moment. But she didn’t have time for all this She needed to get to Pappies on time, and dealing with Katrina wasn’t on her to-do list. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time. She hadn’t made an official appointment, which she now wondered if she should have, but there was no going back. She had to at least show up and try. As she made her way toward Pappies, the cool afternoon breeze brushed against her skin. It was a short walk from her lecture hall, but it felt unfamiliar. This was the first time she had come to this side of the school, and she took in her surroundings as she walked. The atmosphere was quieter here, with fewer students loitering around. Most of them seemed busy, either in hushed conversations or heading toward different buildings. Sophia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and quickened her pace. She didn’t wa

This man looked to be in his early 40s—perhaps even younger. He carried himself with an air of confidence, his neatly pressed suit giving him a polished yet approachable appearance. Sophia was a little taken aback. She had expected someone much older in this field, considering the depth of knowledge required for public health. But then again, times were changing, and younger professionals were making their mark in academia. The lecturer walked to the center of the class, set down his materials, and offered a friendly smile. “Good morning, everyone,” he greeted. “Good morning, sir,” the class responded in unison. “My name is Dr. Reynolds, and I’ll be taking you through Public Health this semester. I expect all of you to be engaged because this course isn’t just about theories—it’s about real-world applications. Public health affects eve
