Clarice was thirsty. She needed to drink water, but she had difficulty holding the glass in her frail hands. She attempted again and this time she succeeded, but her hands shook uncontrollably, and the glass fell from her hands, spilling the water on her dress. The glass rolled and fell to the floor with a loud thud, sending broken glass all over the floor.
Damn! She feels hopeless and useless.
Tears of frustration filled her eyes. Why did she end up this way?
Why?
Why has she become so weak and ill?
She used to be healthy, full of energy and hailed as the most beautiful Luna in the entire East District, the envy of women far and wide. She earned everyone's respect despite the fact she was wolfless.
But things took a wrong turn six months ago when she and the other Luna went for a fun hunt in the forest, and she was bitten by an insect of unknown origin. When the hunt was over, she had a high fever for one week, got itchy rashes all over her body and her health deteriorated from that moment onward. No amount of medicine can cure her, which deeply baffles her and her husband, Alpha Bruce.
All the human doctors who checked her condition declared one thing: her body refused to accept medicine of any kind, and she couldn't be cured by any medicine made by humans or shamans alike.
Starting that day, her life was never the same again. She could not leave her room. She was bedridden and had never seen the sun for a long time. With her skin clinging to her bones, she looks like a skeleton, a shadow of her former self.
The door opened and her trusted servant, the omega named Lorey, entered the room carrying a wooden food tray.
"Luna, I brought your favorite chicken soup and bread," Lorey said cheerily, then sighed when she saw the broken glass on the floor.
She put the tray on the table, picked up the broom and dustpan from the corner and started sweeping the broken glass, dumped the shards in the dustbin in the corner and then mopped the floor dry.
"I'm sorry for the mess, Lorey," Clarice apologized, misty-eyed, feeling so hopeless.
Lorey glanced at the dying Luna pitiably. "No need to apologize, Luna. It's my job. It's my responsibility to serve you," she replied warmly, moving to the closet to get a set of clothes for the bedridden woman.
"Where is my husband? Where is Alpha Bruce?" Clarice asked. "He never visits me in my room anymore," she asked sorrowfully. Her voice was filled with sadness. It had been four months since she last saw her husband.
Lorey bit her lower lip. She doesn't have the heart to inform the dying Luna that tonight, Alpha Bruce will marry another woman and appoint his new wife as the Luna of their pack. She was deeply saddened by the turn of events, as if fate itself stripped Luna Clarice of her dignity and everything she held dear in her heart.
"I think your husband was on a business trip, Luna. I haven't seen him around the mansion for several days..." Lorey replied, feeling guilty of fabricating a lie. "Let's change your dress first before you eat breakfast," she said, changing the topic of their conversation.
"No. I'll eat first. I want to get well so I can accompany my husband on his trip across the district," Clarice said, trying to sit upright, but struggling to do so. "Please give me that bowl of soup."
Lorey sighed and glanced worriedly at the bowl of soup. She caught the shaman putting white powder on the bowl of soup last week. When she entered the kitchen, the shaman scolded her angrily for not knocking first before entering the kitchen. And when she asked about the name of the powder that he had sprinkled on the soup, the shaman explained that it was a new powerful medicine he concocted to cure the bedridden Luna.
But she saw something flashing in the shaman's eyes. He got that evil look on him. Suddenly, her heart beat rapidly in her rib cage, signaling that the shaman was up to something. A suspicion was born and sprouted rapidly in her heart.
Why is Luna Clarice's health not improving despite religiously consuming medicine created by the shaman?
What if the shaman mixed Luna's food with poison every day?
She had been thinking about that suspicion she had about the shaman, it grew stronger in her mind for a while now. But she can't tell anyone about her suspicion because she could get killed for slandering a higher official in the pack. But she couldn't take it anymore.
Lorey rushed to bed and whispered in Clarice's ears, "Luna, I think your food was poisoned by the shaman," she blurted out.
Clarice's eyes widened in shock. Her heart was beating rapidly in her rib cage. She looked at the maid, baffled by her accusation. "What are you talking about? What made you think of such a thing?" she asked in a low voice.
"Because I caught the shaman sprinkling white powder on the bowl of soup last week. When I asked him what the name of the powder was, he scolded me furiously and told me to knock on the door before I entered the kitchen. For a split second, I saw his eyes flash with murderous intent." Lorey explained in a low voice.
Clarice was stunned by her servant's revelation.
Is Lorey's suspicion right?
She never thought that someone would poison her food. She was good and fair to everyone. She treated everyone equally. She has no enemies. She is the perfect Luna that everyone respects and admires. How could someone poison her?
But why?
Could it be true?
"It's impossible," Clarice said in denial. Tears filled her eyes as a nagging suspicion began to form in her mind.
The two women fell silent, their minds were submerged in deep thoughts.
Lorey broke the uncomfortable silence between them and said, "Luna, you have already taken tons of medication, but you're not getting well no matter how hard you try. You eat healthy foods and drink your medicine religiously every day, but still no positive result. No matter what you do, you can't get well. Haven't you noticed it yet?"
Clarice nodded her head as the realization hit her like a ton of bricks. Indeed, despite her best efforts, she's not getting well. She kept eating healthy foods and taking daily medicine, but her health did not improve, and now she feels like she's dying. She endured six months of vomiting, lack of appetite and hallucinations at night, and now this week she feels like she's going to die. Sometimes she had difficulty breathing. She could feel the spirit of death waiting outside the door to collect her soul, waiting for her last breath.
She stared at the bowl of soup that the shaman had prepared for her. "How to know if the soup is poisoned?" she asked her maid.
Lorey shook her head. "I don't know, Luna. I don't have special skills to know if the food is poisoned or not."
Proving the soup is poisoned is going to be difficult since the soup and porridge she eats every day taste the same.
Hmm...
What to do?
Clarice continued to stare at the bowl of soup. If Lorey's suspicions are right, the bowl of soup that she eats every morning will eventually kill her. It's just a matter of time. No. She can't die yet. "Lorey, go and see if my husband has already arrived home. Tell him to come to my room immediately. I want to tell him that the shaman has been poisoning me for a long time. I want him to investigate this matter immediately. Hurry up!" she ordered urgently.
Lorey was in great distress, scratching her head uncomfortably. "Um, Luna, I'm sorry to say this... but the reason why Alpha Bruce no longer visits you is because the shaman told everyone that your illness is infectious, and your disease can be transferred to another person in such a short time. Your very own husband is afraid of getting infected with your disease," she explained morosely.
Clarice's eyes widened in surprise. "That's a big lie! You've been by my side for six months, taking care of me every day, and you sleep in my room every night. How come you were never infected with my disease?" Her enraged voice vibrated around the room.
Lorey breathed deeply. "I argued with them that it was not true, but they never listened to me," she replied despondently.
Clarice was desperate. If the shaman succeeded with his intention of killing her, then no one will know that she was being slowly poisoned by that criminal. She will eventually die and can't get justice for herself!
They will just think that she died because of her incurable disease.
Lorey was fidgeting in her seat, looking nervous. She was hesitating to inform Luna Clarice that she had already been dethroned as Luna of the Bloodhound Pack since last week and tonight the new Luna would take over her place. She feared that if Luna Clarice learned about the bad news she would die instantly due to shock and heartbreak.
Clarice was busy thinking of a way to inform her husband about her suspicion, when her eyes landed on Lorey's face, she noticed her restlessness. "What's wrong? Why are you looking anxious?" she inquired.
Lorey took a deep breath. She finally decided to reveal the truth before it was too late. "Um, Luna, there is something you need to know about your husband..."
Clarice's breath faltered when she saw the severity of grief on Lorey's face. She had a feeling that what she was about to hear would break her heart into a million pieces. "What is it? Tell me now!"
Lorey sighed heavily. "Last week your husband already dethroned you, and you are no longer the Luna of our pack. He has already chosen a new Luna to take your place and tonight the new Luna will ascend to the throne in a lavish wedding ceremony. I'm so sorry I only told you about this today. I'm afraid you will plunge into depression and die of a heart attack after learning the truth," she said remorsefully.
The bad news exploded in Clarice's ears like a bomb, shattering her heart into tiny pieces. She had difficulty breathing. Her heart was squeezed painfully into her rib cage. A growl of pain erupted from her lips. Tears filled her eyes. She could only howl in anger and dismay. "How can my husband do this to me? How can he betray me like this? I'm still alive!"
She gritted her teeth in anger, furious at the betrayal and scheming that was going on around her.
She closed her eyes as an avalanche of tears threatened to spill from her eyes.
Lorey's tears rolled down her cheeks. She regretted telling her mistress the truth. "Luna, you have to survive the pain of heartbreak. You have to continue living!" She cried in despair.
"I'm still alive! But they treated me as if I'm dead already!" Clarice screamed aloud like a wounded animal. Her eyes were swollen with tears.
After learning about her dethronement, she felt like all her good deeds in the past had been ignored and wasted. Her husband's betrayal hurt her to the core.
Her heart was overwhelmed with grief. She was gasping for breath.
Panicking, Lorey rushed to the table and quickly poured water into the glass. "Luna, drink the water quickly," she said urgently.
Clarice obeyed and drank the water.
Lorey put the empty glass on the side table. She suddenly remembered the uneaten breakfast on the table. "Luna, do you want to eat breakfast now? I think the bread is not poisoned," she stated casually, trying to change the depressing topic of their conversation.
Clarice glanced at the food tray and shook her head. "No. I will skip breakfast today. I don't have appetite."
"I can get you some fruit from the kitchen," Lorey offered.
Clarice shook her head again. What is the purpose of living if her husband has already abandoned her? Her world just fell apart. She suddenly lost the will to continue living.
Wait...
Who is the new wife?
"Tell me, who is the new Luna?" Clarice asked, racking her brain bitterly. Who is capable enough to replace her on her throne?
Lorey bit her lip nervously.
"Hurry up! Tell me, who is she?" Clarice asked desperately, sounding like a wounded animal.
"It's your best friend, Aurelia," Lorey replied sadly.
Clarice's head snapped angrily in shock. "Whaaaaaat? This can't be!" She howled in pain. Her body trembled in rage. She couldn't believe that her best friend would stoop this low and betray her.No way! Not after everything she had done for her.Tears rolled down her face as the sadness, pain and grief of being betrayed by two people she loved and trusted tore her heart to pieces. The betrayal is too much to bear and it's killing her.Overwhelmed with too much bad news in one day, Clarice's defenses crumbled. The pain was so deep and blinding she started seeing dancing stars everywhere... then her body shut down and darkness enveloped her consciousness.Seeing her mistress pass out, Lorey began to panic. "Luna, please don't die on me! Please don't leave me. You are the only family I have!" She grabbed Clarice's hand, felt her mistress's pulse, feeling relieved that there was still a tiny bit of movement on her chest.Lorey is terrified. She noticed that although Luna Clarice was still
Alpha Callum read the message one more time, gritting his teeth in anger. He shoved the crumpled paper in the pocket of his black hooded jacket, meaning to cancel his identity while visiting Luna Clarice's room. He heard the news that she had been ill for a long time and dying, which is why he came to see her one last time. But he did not expect the shocking revelation she wrote in her letter that completely blew his mind away.He shut his eyes for a few seconds as the past came rushing back to his mind on one fateful night when it all started. No, it's not the right time to reminisce about the past. He needs to save Clarice before it's too late.Shaking his head, he walked to the door and exited the room."Let's make this discreet," Alpha Callum told the servant."I know a secret path that will lead to the other building without getting seen, Alpha," Lorey said in a low voice."Lead the way," Alpha Callum replied in a hard tone. He put the hood on his head and sent a mind link messag
Alpha Callum appeared outside a wooden house in the middle of a forest."Pops, where are you?" he called out to his grandpa at the top of his lungs. "Open the door!""Grandpaaaa!" he shouted again. The door of the wooden house opened and an old man in his 70s stepped outside. "Why are you so loud, son?" He protested. "You disturb my meditation time," he grumbled."I brought home a patient for you. Remember Clarice in the cottage? She was severely poisoned and she is dying. Please hurry up, save her!" Alpha Callum said urgently."Clarice who?" Grandpa Eliezer asked in bewilderment. He knew someone with that name, but that was a long time ago."Never mind," Alpha Callum said, rushing to the door. When Grandpa Eliezer saw the woman's face, he barely recognized her. The woman is dying. It's not the time to ask questions. "Alright, put her in the vacant room on the second floor," he ordered, opening the door wide for his grandson to enter.Alpha Callum climbed the staircase, entered the fi
He was sitting on the couch as time passed by. His mind was debating if he would stay at Clarice's side to watch over her the whole night or just go back to Alpha Bruce's mansion to attend the wedding with his new Luna.He doesn't care about the wedding at all.A big part of him wanted to stay by Clarice's side and whisper in her ears to fight for her life so she could finally take him to his son.A few minutes later, Grandpa Eliezer came down the stairs. "You're still here? I thought you had already left?" he asked."Later," Alpha Callum replied."I'm going to go outside to gather some herbs to make more powerful herbal medicine to help Clarice's body expel the plethora of poison harming her internal organs. Good thing you brought her to me in the nick of time or else you have to dig her grave starting this very minute," Grandpa Eliezer said with a sigh of relief."Does it mean she's going to survive the poisoning?" Alpha Callum asked optimistically."Right now, I can say she has a 5
Alpha Callum was back in Alpha Bruce's mansion, just in time before the wedding ceremony started."Alpha, the wedding will take place in twenty minutes," Beta Amir said, preparing the black formal suit Alpha would wear on the special occasion."I'm no longer interested in attending the wedding," Alpha Callum replied, looking pensive."Is it because you already met her?" Beta Amir asked."Yeah. I didn't expect I would discover something wonderful today," Alpha Callum smiled. Thinking about his son filled his heart with happiness."Alpha, how is she?" Beta Amir inquired."Her condition is serious with the poisoning and all that, but Grandpa's antidote is effective. She will recover soon," he added confidently."Hopefully so," Beta Amir said, placing the suit on the bed."During the wedding ceremony, blend with the crowd and investigate if they have already found out about her disappearance. If they already know, we will leave this place immediately," Alpha Callum said, his tone alert."
Alpha Callum watched the happy couple mingling with guests while sipping his drinks.Beta Amir established the mind link. "Alpha, the men have already left the cemetery. I'm the only one left here. Shall I leave now?" he asked."No. Wait for me. I want to see the grave with my own eyes," Alpha Callum said."OK. I'll wait here," Beta Amir replied.Alpha Callum put the wine glass on the table, stood up and walked towards the nearest bathroom to pee. He entered the empty cubicle and initiated teleportation in his mind. He vanished from the cubicle in the blink of an eye.Alpha Callum appeared beside his beta in the cemetery. The full moon above cast an eerie glow around the quiet cemetery. He looked at the tombstone. "Poor Clarice, buried without her consent," he murmured sadly, shaking his head."A tragic end to a well-respected Luna," Beta Amir said gloomily.Alpha Callum took a deep breath, looking around the cemetery."Are we going to avenge Luna Clarice, Alpha?" Beta Amir asked.Alp
When Alpha Callum arrived at the farm house, his grandfather was still wide awake, drinking coffee on the sofa."Why are you still awake, Pops?" he asked."I'm watching Clarice for three hours then I will wake up Lorey, so I can sleep," Grandpa Eliezer replied, yawning."You better go to sleep now. I will watch Clarice until morning," Alpha Callum said, heading to the staircase."Aren't you going home tonight? Your wife is waiting for you?" Grandpa Eliezer reminded him.Alpha Callum continues climbing the stairs. "All she knows is I'm having a business discussion with other Alphas at the wedding reception.""I see you are starting to develop a habit of lying to your wife..." Grandpa Eliezer said casually."This will end soon after Clarice is free from poisoning. I just want to make sure that she is well taken care of and recovers quickly so I can finally see my son," Alpha Callum said, reaching the top of the staircase."Fine, as you say so, I'm going to sleep now." Grandpa Eliezer we
Alpha Callum went downstairs and joined Grandpa Eliezer for breakfast."How is she, Pops? How is her condition?" he asked."Her body is responding well to the antidote and medicines I gave her. I'm impressed with her recovery. Her iron will to continue living is remarkable. Clarice is a born fighter. Since she refused to die she can only continue living, for her son I guess," Grandpa Eliezer stated in awe while sipping his coffee."That's great, Pops. I will see my son soon," Alpha Callum smiled, delighted with the news. The sooner Clarice can walk on her own, we will begin our journey because I'm dying to see my son," he added excitedly. His eyes glistened with love and longing for his son.Grandpa Eliezer nodded his head. "I can guarantee you that Clarice will make a full recovery soon. Her cooperation and willingness to take medicine helped tremendously with her healing process.""So, how many months do you think she can be up on her feet and able to travel safely?" Alpha Callum as
The next day.Clarice woke up to a brand-new day. She immediately recalled what had happened yesterday. After the power infusion, she manages to teleport to the kitchen, freeze the hands of the clock and make herself invisible for a few minutes. Now all she needs to do is keep practicing using her powers so she can teleport faster to anyplace, freeze any object much quicker and longer and make herself invisible for a few hours without being seen. Currently, she can only do those things for a short time. Now there are two particular things that she wants to try today: hovering in the air and the power of illusion.Excited to know if she could perform such an ambitious feat, she got out of bed, eager to start practicing. She entered the bathroom and stayed there for a few minutes to do some washing. Then she left the room and went to the kitchen to prepare a simple meal: a ham and egg sandwich and hot coffee. After she finished eating, she went to the living room, sat on the sofa and be
"So if you are ready, let's start the process now," Demetria said."Alright, let's do it!" Clarice replied excitedly."Let's go somewhere first. I'll show you something." Demetria waved her hand in the air.A few minutes later, the women found themselves in an empty room next to Demetria's room.Demetria approached the wall and opened a secret drawer that only appeared when she waved her hand.Clarice looked at the three oval-shaped objects inside a wooden box, which looked like yummy chocolates. "What is that?""Grandpa Mortaz made this to be consumed by the next guardian. These oval-shaped objects can give you unlimited powers such as teleportation, making illusions, superhuman strength, the ability to hover in the air, freeze people and other living things, create objects in your mind, turn yourself invisible and many more. You have to ingest these objects one after another," Demetria explained."Wow!" Clarice stared at the brown objects in awe. "They look like hard objects. Are th
Demetria gently pushed Clarice’s head away from her index finger. “That’s enough for your first taste of blood, dear.”“But it’s not enough! Your blood tastes like honey, so sweet. I want more!” Clarice protested, blood trickling down her lips.Demetria shook her head firmly. “That’s all for now. You will start vomiting if you drink too much on your first blood feed. Allow your body to get used to the taste of blood first, and you can drink more later.”“Fine!” Clarice grumbled, upset.“All you need to do is rest. You’ve been sleeping for three days, and you only woke up today,” Demetria said, standing up.“Whaaaat?” Clarice exclaimed, shocked. She glanced at the window. It's daytime. “Three days? Are you sure?” she asked, incredulously.“Yup!” Demetria responds. “I’m surprised to discover that, during the three days of your transformation, your fangs have not shown yet. But I’m still relieved because you crave blood, which means you now have a vampire essence in you. You are a vampire
Clarice stayed in her room the whole morning. When she went to the kitchen to prepare lunch, Demetria was nowhere in sight. She spent the rest of her afternoon reading a book.In the evening, she had just finished dinner and was relaxing in the living room when Demetria arrived.“Evening, dear. How's your day?” she asked.“Fine,” Clarice replied. “Where have you been?”“Got some important things to take care of at the vampire association headquarters. I’m retiring soon, so I need to iron things out before I disappear," Demetria answered.“Can we proceed with my transformation tonight if you are not busy?” Clarice requested with urgency in her voice.“Sure!” Demetria grinned. “You refused my offer before, but now you are eager for the transformation to happen. I love your willingness to upgrade yourself,” she commented cheerily.Clarice smiled. “I want to go home. I'm afraid that if I took so long to go home they might forget about me. We should hurry up with the transformation, trainin
After a few moments of climbing the stairs, the women reached the second floor.“Are we going to open the ten rooms one by one? You don’t even have the keys with you?” Clarice asked, looking at her companion’s hands.Demetria smiled. “Silly girl, no need to use the key. As if you don’t know me.”“Ah, okay. I got it.” Clarice giggled.Demetria waved her hand and a mist-like door appeared on the wall. “This is the way a guardian enters the room. No need to use the door. Besides, the doors here are sealed tight, so it won’t open up with a single key. Nor can it be opened with anything heavy or blunt objects. The only way to enter the closed door is to make an invisible door through the wall and only people with supernatural powers like me can do it.”Clarice murmured. “Ah, okay, I got it.”“Let’s enter the room.” Demetria stepped into the recently opened door.Clarice followed Demetria inside. What she saw inside the bare room shocked her. She expected an old casket in the middle of the
The following day, Clarice woke up to a bright new day. The sun was already up in the sky, shining brightly. She did some stretches before getting out of bed.Today, she looks forward to knowing what Demetria’s next revelation is. She is like a student looking forward to learning something new every day.She noticed that Demetria hadn’t entered her room last night, so the transformation might take place tonight. She got up from bed and entered the bathroom to do some washing. A few minutes later, she emerged from the bathroom door and went outside to start her day. She went straight to the kitchen and prepared a simple breakfast of waffles and hot coffee. She was munching on her food when she heard Demetria’s footsteps coming into the kitchen. She looked over her shoulder. “Good morning,” she greeted her teacher cheerily.“Morning, dear,” Demetria replied, sitting on the chair, facing her trainee. “How are you today?” she asked.“I’m fine, better than yesterday,” Clarice responded, tak
The core suddenly flashed a bright red light, indicating it liked Clarice’s blood.Demetria smiled broadly, pleased with the result. She decided to wake Clarice up so she could see the positive results with her own eyes. She placed her hand on Clarice’s head.Clarice opened her eyes and blinked several times. She looked at Demetria and asked, “Is it over? Did I pass the test?” she asked anxiously.“Yes, you passed the test with flying colors! See the core, it is currently flashing a red light!” Demetria answered jubilantly.Clarice looked up at the diamond and saw the flashing of red lights. Her heart rejoiced. Tears of happiness filled her eyes. “Thank you so much!” she said, crying silently. Her homecoming is getting closer now that she has passed the test. She will do anything to master her training quickly. She can’t wait to go home. The thought of going home filled her mind with renewed energy and enthusiasm. She got down from the table and looked at Demetria. “What’s next? I wan
When the two women arrived at the sacred mountain, they placed the take-out food in the kitchen and then proceeded upstairs to the 3rd floor in Demetria’s forbidden place.“Are you ready for the next step?” Demetria asked.Clarice was scanning the room. The 3rd floor has its own living room and several other rooms.“When I’m gone, you are going to inherit this floor as well,” Demetria said casually.“Okay,” Clarice replied. “What is inside those rooms?” she asked, pointing to the closed doors.Demetria responded, “Each room has its function. I’ll explain them later, but the important thing is, you have to pass the test first. Let's see if the core will accept your blood...”Clarice gave Demetria a terrified look. “Does it hurt? What’s going to happen to me during blood testing?” she asked worriedly.Demetria smiled. “Don’t be afraid, dear. I will just make a tiny cut on your finger and let the core sip your blood. Let's see if it accepts your blood offering,” she explained.“And what
The next day.Clarice woke up feeling lethargic. She didn't have a good sleep last night. Everything she saw inside that illegal harvesting facility turned her stomach upside down. The level of cruelty and brutality damaged her soul. She can’t forget the lifeless body of that young girl inside the drum. No one should suffer the same fate!No one! Then she remembered the other victims cramped in the room. It must be terrifying to be in their shoes. And the only thing that gives her satisfaction is the golden chance to kill those men. The way she kills them is brutal, but if it is the only way to stop them from killing innocent victims in the future, then they have to die. They are monsters, parasites that need to be completely annihilated from society so that the majority of citizens can live a safe and peaceful life. After everything that happened last night, she finally reached a decision. She is ready to become Demetria’s successor in order to regain her freedom and become powerful.
