Caught

Anna woke up and stretched, feeling relaxed and satiated. She remembered the wonderful, perfect farewell evening she had spent with Adam, and looked away. Adam was no longer there. She looked at the radio alarm clock on the night stand and saw that it was already eight o'clock in the morning.

She got up leisurely and went to the shower. Then she went into the dining room and there was no one else there, but the table with the leftovers showed that it had been busy. Anna went into the kitchen. She greeted the cook and sat down after pouring herself a cup of coffee.

“Where's Adam, Judith?” Anna asked without interest.

The cook stared at her for a while, recriminating, before answering.

“He's gone out.” She said, looking away and starting to work the stove.

“Will he be long? Do you know where he went?”

“That, I can't say.” She replied, looking at the pans.

Anna was too anxious to make the call to her family to realize that the cook's face and eyes indicated danger. She
