“Thanks, Maxwell. Don't worry about Bonnie. She can't get to me. I know she's the one who sent the enemy faction to invade the city. And then she triggered the vampires, thus shooting herself in the foot. The two factions joined forces on the battlefield against their common enemy, and now they want to join us, and they also want Bonnie dead. You never told me that vampires hated Dester. As for Bonnie, she's in hiding. And only I know where she is.” “I always knew about the vampires' antagonism towards Dester, but they hate you too, and so I believed it was a feud between species. I slowed them down, Adam. Now, Genevieve is after every one of them who sensed my betrayal, and killing them. I hope you know what you're doing... Now, I need to go and see Anna.” “Go... And tell her how sorry I am for what I did to her. Not just yesterday, but everything. I'm sorry for the day I forced her into bed with me and made her my lover. I could conquer her, and I didn't want to waste time, a
“Yes. It was the only way I could find to keep you alive.” “What if I neglect my thirst?” “If you can contain yourself, there's no problem. We can feed on ordinary food.” Anna turned her face to the wall. “Send the nurse away.” She said tiredly. “If you drink her blood, your voice will return to normal faster.” “I'm in no hurry.” Maxwell took a deep breath and looked at the nurse. “Go, find my mother in the hall and tell her you're my snack and that she should take you to my car.” The nurse left and Anna turned angrily to Maxwell. “Snack? Helen was your snack, right? I saw that, but I didn't understand at the time what it meant... The truth was in front of me the whole time...” “Cheer up, my dear. I think we'll be going home today. You'll be among your children and everyone who loves you.” “Not everyone. Has Tayme gone to boarding school?” “Yes. Jenna went to take her, but I still haven't heard how she reacted when she found out about this decision. But d
The way the doctor referred to everyone was very intimate. He even knew about Alexandre, which was just a nickname. That wasn't his name. She never knew his real name either, and never tried to find out. The doctor left, and she went to the steel cupboard and found clean clothes. Surely Maxwell had arranged it. Her dirt-stained clothes were in the garbage can. She took off her hospital gown and went out into the corridor. She thought they had forgotten her, but at her door she met one of her father's security guards. She looked further down the corridor, and in another hospital, she saw security guards guarding other doors. She imagined that one of those doors was Adam's bed. She longed to go and see him, but held back. He had told Max that he needed some time, and she would respect that. The security guard at her door offered to guide her to where her husband was waiting. And she returned to the hospital where she was staying, delighted to learn that she could do astral travel.
“The other werewolves are also leaving today.” Adam said, thinking that perhaps they should wait a little longer. “Caricature took a SPIN to take them. But he made sure you got home first.” “So it wasn't a delusion, Caricature is really here.” “Kate's here too.” “Why does he want me to go home first? Is there something waiting for me there?” “Not that I know of. Caricatura said it's for you to rest. He said you need to live with your memories, and not let them dominate your mood.” Mycon stopped talking and cracked a wide smile. “Caricature is talking just like Kate.” Mycon said, looking at Alfa through the rearview mirror and rolled his eyes. “Oh, I remember. Kate said she was going to spend some time there until you recovered. And pretend you didn't notice that it looks like she ate a whole small watermelon.” Mycon said, and smiled amusedly at his conclusion. “It's not a good time to have Kate's company.” “It's not a good time for Alpha to be away from the people wh
Adam looked with disgust at the food. Anna loved it and always prepared it for him. But he forced himself to sit down and help himself. He could no longer associate everything with Anna, or he would never forget her. When he did, he could taste the dish. It was the most delicious food he had ever eaten. As soon as he'd finished, he picked up his glass of juice, and Kate approached him with some pills in her hand. “What are these?” Adam asked suspiciously. “They're your antibiotics. Don't be a difficult boy, and take them soon.” Adam accepted and took the pills, popping them into his mouth. Kate watched him with her arms crossed. “I've already taken the medication, Kate.” Adam said, annoyed by her attitude. “We need to have a talk, but you're not very well. So it's going to happen with you lying down and resting. I've taken the liberty of preparing the room down here for you and I've had everything you own brought up to it. No more living in the past.” Adam said nothing a
The boy remained silent, staring at Maxwell. “I'm your father, and you're my son, and that's how it's going to be, forever. I love you like I've never loved anyone else in my life, and I'd take a bullet for you, but I'm not the one who planted your little seed in your mother's belly... You're the most like me of all my children, you obey the same sense of morality as I do, and we're very similar in character, we have the same blood, too, but...” “But my daddy, it's Uncle Adam.” The boy finished without surprise, when he saw that his father was struggling to finish the sentence. “You don't seem upset.” Anna said, arching her eyebrow suspiciously. “I already know that, it's been a long time. But I agreed with Uncle Adam that I wouldn't call him Dad, so as not to hurt my father.” Maxwell and Anna exchanged a look, before turning to Ian. “And that's fine with you? Is there anything you want to say about that? Do you have any doubts?” Maxwell asked, disguising his anger a
Maxwell found Anna in the kitchen, concentrating on drying the cook's veins. The woman was fighting Anna with horror in her eyes, to no avail. She was strong. He approached and pulled Anna away from the cook with ease and looked at the woman. “Your wife... She's gone mad! She's a monster!” The cook screamed, trying to get away. Maxwell held her head and when she looked into his eyes, she froze. “Nothing happened here. You haven't seen my wife since she arrived.” Maxwell said and looked at the cook's neck. Anna was clumsy. He turned to her. “You got a one-night stand with an unknown man yesterday and he branded your neck. Do you understand?” “Yes, sir.” She said with tears running from her eyes. “Good. Now go and put a bandage on that neck.” As the woman was leaving, Anna tried to grab her, but Maxwell stopped her, holding her effortlessly. “I want more blood!” Anna said in a guttural voice. Maxwell looked at her and pulled her into the living room, where there w
Maxwell solved that problem on the eighth day. When Anna took his hand and pulled him to the bedroom, he went, but refused to touch her. “What's happening to you, Maxwell? What happened to the much-acclaimed virility of the men in the Lens family? You're a disappointment!” She said haughtily. “Anna, you have three boys who need you.” “They have nannies, grandmothers, grandfather, you, Jenna... And I'm not in the mood to listen to children whispering.” “Ian wants to talk to you.” “You've already taught him that you can't have what you want. Let him understand that.” “You're neglecting your job as a mother.” Anna looked at him angrily. “If you don't want to lie with me, that's fine, Maxwell. I understand that you're a slacker, but you're not going to tell me what to do, or judge me. We're in your courtroom, Maxwell. And you're not the judge here.” Maxwell looked at her thoughtfully. “There's something missing, Anna. Tell me what it is, and we'll sort it out, so
