If anyone in high society were asked who Millicent Bianchi was, there would be only one answer: She was the eldest daughter of Massimo Bianchi. And, because of that, she had everything.
Even though she doesn't deserve it.
She had a loving family, loyal friends, a job she had achieved without any effort and a surname that carried a legacy too great for someone as mediocre as her...
And now, she also had a flawless engagement party. Courtesy of a perfect groom to a not-so-perfect bride. This was very clear to everyone, as her future husband was happily greeting all the High Society bigwigs who were scattered around the Bianchi’s garden, while Millicent was there, hidden in the shadows, observing everything from afar.
Like always.
“You know you don’t have to force yourself to do this.” Her mother’s gentle voice whispered in her ear “It’s a big step. If you don’t want to go through with all of this, your father and I will be here to protect you and sort things out.”
“I know you will be.” Millicent struggled to smile at her, hating that she was worrying her poor mother on what was supposed to be one of the most special days of their lives “But… This time, I'm going to stand on my own two feet. I chose to be here today.” She looked back toward the party, watching as her fiancé and her bridesmaids chatted nearby, looking around as if they were looking for her “And I'm not going to let any of my stupid fears stop me from doing what I need to do.”
“Millicent…”
“Well, I think I've taken a break long enough.” Millicent took a deep breath, trying to ignore any feelings other than her determination “Austin’s parents won’t forgive me if I leave their flawless party without a flawless bride.”
She did her best to keep a calm smile frozen on her face as she walked away from her mother, causing all eyes to turn in her direction, weighing heavily on her shoulders. However, that day, she didn't have time to feel intimidated or nervous around those people. Not when her only focus was the man standing near the drinks table, smiling prettily at her, tall and blond like the Prince Charming she used to read about in fairytales when she was just a little girl. And, next to him, was his friend Jasmine with a microphone in her hands, looking euphoric.
“There’s my future wife.” Austin wrapped his arms around her waist as Millicent approached, not even giving her the opportunity to say anything “I was wondering where you were. How could I properly start this party without you by my side to greet our guests?”
“Actually, I was looking for you. I know you warned me that something unexpected happened at the company, but after more than an hour, I got worried.” She stared at him, watching as the confident gleam in his eyes disappeared instantly “Did something happen?”
“Nothing you have to worry about, baby.” he cleared his throat, moving his hand away from her waist so he could straighten his tie “It’s all settled now.”
“Yes, Millie. This is not the time to talk about work.” Jasmine cut in, hugging Millicent's shoulders with a huge smile on her face as she waved the microphone around “Now, it's time for the bride and groom to give a speech and clear the dance floor. You know very well who I hope to dance with tonight.” She blinked, but her last words were drowned out by Austin’s growl.
“You know very well that I would never invite that man to one of the most important days of my life. Not when he would surely find a way to ruin everything.” Instead of shaking Jasmine’s contentment, Austin’s harsh glare only seemed to make her smile even wider “Besides, this is not the time to bring up bad things. We have a party to start…”
“If you don't mind…” Millicent snatched the microphone from Jasmine's hand before Austin had the chance “I'd like to speak first. I prepared a surprise.” she smiled at their surprised looks “I think you'll like it.”
“Oh, baby… You’re so sweet.” Austin caressed her face, but Millicent stepped away before he could hug her “I'm the one who should have prepared something special to celebrate the fact the greatest woman in the world is about to become my Mrs. Carnby. But, please, continue. I can’t wait to see what you’ve prepared.”
“Yes… Wait and see.” she muttered to herself as she turned on the microphone, causing the feedback to turn the attention of all the guests to her “Hello, everyone. Thank you all for being here today. I know you guys want to hear me talk about how much I love my fiancé and how this moment is one of the most special in my life.” Millicent ran her eyes around, meeting the sweet and loving looks of her father, her brother, her grandfather and all her uncles and aunts, which only made her heart pound faster “But, as I realized that simple words wouldn't be enough to express how I'm feeling right now, I prepared a surprise. Underneath each chair you all are sitting on is an envelope. I ask that you, please, open it…” she put her hand in the pocket of her dress, showing everyone exactly what these envelopes looked like “And, of course, I couldn’t miss one for my dear fiancé.”
“Thanks, baby.” he smiled, beaming as he opened the wax seal “This is so sweet… I can’t wait to…” Austin’s expression fell the instant the printed photos slid into his hand “What… What the fuck?!”
His gasp was just the first in a long wave of swearing, gasping and other reactions of pure shock as the other guests opened the envelopes…
And found photos of her fiancé fucking one of her best friends.
“I would love to be able to celebrate love today. But, as you can see, this is impossible. The wedding is off… As is any relationship between me and Austin Carnby.” Millicent turned her eyes to her ex-fiance's still stunned and horrified expression “Thank you all for your attention.”
Dropping the microphone into the hands of some waiter, she turned, walking towards where the flower beds were highest in the garden, while Austin shouted after her, in a mix of despair and outrage.
“Wait, Millie! This… You… This is not what you think…!”
“You son of a bitch!” Her father's voice cried out, not just furious, but also bloodthirsty “How could you do this to my daughter?!”
Millicent knew she had to take responsibility for calming the pandemonium she had created, but there was something more important she needed to do right now, before allowing herself to break down or reflect on what she had just done. Or, rather, there was someone she needed to find, before all this.
But for the first time, he was the one who came to her.
“That was quite a show…” that deep voice sounded at the same moment she turned to see a man stepping out of the shadows, his blue eyes standing out against the moonlight, the same as Austin’s, but still completely different “I don’t say this often, but… I’m impressed.” He stopped in front of her, close enough for the strangely addictive smell of cologne and nicotine to envelop her.
“You asked me how far I was willing to go.” She swallowed hard, refusing to be intimidated by his presence, even though the way he was leaning toward her was making her breath hitch “That's my answer. That's what I can do on my own against Austin. But, it’s nothing compared to what we can do together.” those sharp eyes watched her like a predator about to attack, now at the same height as hers “My proposal remains the same. But, what about your answer… Isaac?”
His attention strayed toward the engagement party, which had now become a hell of screaming and swearing, a far cry from the perfect event the Carnbys had planned. And, to Millicent's surprise, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly, breaking his stony expression with a smile that was not just evil, but clearly satisfied.
“If you still need a revenge partner, Miss. Bianchi…” Isaac Carnby, the man who should have become her brother-in-law, brought her hand to his lips in a soft kiss, but one that still sent goosebumps across her skin “The pleasure will be all mine.”
“You can do this, Millie. Just… Breathe.”Millicent muttered to herself, hoping her frantic thoughts might drown out the murmurs and sharp looks that followed her the instant she crossed the hallway. “Oh, it looks like daddy’s little princess insisted on coming to yet another meeting… What do you think?” a female voice asked, mischievously “Is she finally going to present something today? Or just lean on Mr. Carnby’s work, as always…?”“Are you crazy?!” another woman gasped “Lower your voice! Mr. Bianchi may not be here today, but he will definitely know if any of us are caught talking shit about his daughter!” It would have been very easy for Millicent to simply turn around and confront them. However, since the last thing she wanted was to see someone on their knees, begging her to save their jobs, she just continued on her way, silently. Presenting her project was the only thing she should worry about and the only reason she was fighting her heavy eyes and her tired body. It had t
“And that is my proposal, gentlemen.” Still motionless, Millicent watched her fiancé sit down, not even looking in her direction as the executives began to chat among themselves, clearly satisfied. Austin just remained smiling, almost as if he hadn't realized he had just introduced her project as his own, repeating every single word she had rehearsed exhaustively over the past few days. “An excellent presentation as always, Mr. Carnby.” one of the executives praised “Now, to complete our list, we have… Oh. Miss. Bianchi.” the old man snorted, causing all the eyes at the table to turn to her, but not in a friendly way.For a moment, Millicent managed to part her lips, but no words dared to come out. What could she say to convince these men that the project they were praising had been entirely hers? Should she just embarrass herself like that, even though she knew they would just laugh and mock her? “Millicent decided to take a break from her own project to help me with mine.” Austin
For a moment, the hallway was so silent that, in the midst of her shock and horror, Millicent even wondered if she was hallucinating, after such a terrible day.But Jasmine didn't let that doubt last more than a second. “Yes, Austin, baby! Harder!”“What the fuck…!” Sage growled under his breath “Those bastards! I can't believe it…! Millie? Millie, wait…!”Ignoring that low request, Millicent just let her feet guide her numb body to Jasmine's bedroom door, where not only did the suggestive growls become clearer, but she could also hear a second voice. The voice of someone who was obviously there with Jasmine, but who was still like a knife in Millicent's chest.“I already told you to shut up!” Austin grunted, but there was a clear smile in his voice.“Why?” Jasmine proved, her voice distorted with a malice that Millie would never have imagined her sweet and joyful friend was capable of “Are you afraid that some guard will hear us again…? Or, maybe, that your precious baby girl may be
As soon as she knocked on the door of Isaac's room for the first time, Millicent had to muster all her concentration not to tremble. About ten minutes had passed since she had heard Austin and Jasmine say things she would never forget, but the realization only seemed to be hitting her at that moment, as the tension grew in her chest. The mix of anger and a broken heart had made it seem like her only choice, but…Was she really about to do something like that? However, before she could even reflect on that question, the door opened and, suddenly, Isaac was there, making her swallow hard. He was wearing just sweatpants and a towel around his shoulder. His dark blond hair was still damp and, to her surprise, his chest was not just covered in muscles and tattoos, but also scars, some so deep that not even the ink could hide. It was probably the result of the accident he got into after driving drunk when they were teenagers, but still…“Let me guess…” he interrupted his thoughts, with thos
“Oh, baby… You promised me you would let me drink something before we enjoyed our last moments at the hotel…”Jasmine's giggle was pretty audible, but Millicent just ignored it and continued staring at the long, impeccably arranged table in front of her, patiently waiting for her guests to arrive at that particular bar in the hotel.“Millicent!” Austin gasped and, only then, did she allow herself to turn around, wearing the best smile she had rehearsed “What are you doing here?” She watched Austin pull away from Jasmine suddenly, arranging his robe like he was the epitome of chastity and Jasmine had her hair messed up like that just because of a good night's sleep. It was sickening to realize they had never made such a point of hiding those clues, but Millicent just turned a blind eye to it, acting like the blind idiot she knew they were hoping to find."Good morning. I hope you guys are hungry.” was all she said, as warmly as she could manage “I woke up early and asked the chef to pr
“Are you sure you’re okay, Millie?” Sage’s murmur in her ear made Millicent’s head throb, but even so she quickly disguised her expression, giving her bodyguard the calmest smile she was able to force."I am fine. It's just a little fever. The pills may be taking a while to work, but I'm sure I'll be better soon.” she tried to convince even herself, dragging her haggard body in the direction of where the hotel employees were carrying her bags “I think the last few days have taken more of a toll on me than I expected.” Millie grumbled, needing to hold her heavy head for a moment “You look irritated. Did something happen?”"No. Things are going as you predicted.” Sage growled lowly, clearly furious “But that bastard had the audacity to take his bitch on your father's jet and leave you here, all alone...” “Don’t worry. I know.” Millie muttered, taking out her cell phone to look one last time at the messages Austin had sent her.“Hey, baby. I hope your shopping in the city was good, beca
Millicent's body felt as heavy as lead when she managed to open her eyes, but at least her head wasn't hurting anymore. The last thing she remembered was being carried by Isaac to a seat on his plane, where an old doctor with a kind smile had given her some more pills. However, those had been strong enough to knock her out in a way that she didn't even know how much time had passed. Although they were certainly no longer on the ground, as there were clouds passing by the small window nearby...And Isaac was sitting in the armchair right in front of hers. His broad body dominated everything and made even that huge padded chair seem small. He still looked cold and intimidating, even though he looked casual like that, as he checked something on the tablet in his hands. But the way he was no longer wearing a jacket and the top few buttons on his shirt were half open made Millicent blush. Damn, she was too sick
“Are you going to say what’s wrong? Or are you going to make us take it from you?”At the sound of that question, Millicent instinctively lowered her laptop screen a little, but didn't close it completely when she realized who was standing at the door to her room. “Oh, sorry. Did I make you wait too long? I think I'm a little late…” with a smile, she got up from the desk and went to her mother and her best friend, but Cassidy obviously didn't buy it, crossing her arms over her chest and looking at her suspiciously.“It’s been an hour since you said you’d come to your room and take a call.” Cassie countered “I think this goes a little further than being late.”“Are you sure you’re feeling okay, honey? You barely touched your food and went upstairs to lock yourself in your room in the middle of a family lunch…” her mother murmured, her look full of concern “You usually love it when we get together, but now, there seems to be something upsetting you…”“I'm sorry for making you worry. I a
In total, Millicent tried to have sex with Austin three times. It sucked that she was thinking about this at a time like this, but in her defense, it was almost shocking the difference between those three terrible moments and what was happening at that moment. Everything with Austin was about manipulations and his own desires. She had never really felt like sleeping with him, but had been carried away by his whining and mumbling about how, if she really loved him, she would prove her love in bed. But as great as that bastard was at convincing her to do what she didn't want, not even his talk had been able to make Millicent fight the repulsion and desperation of having him approach her like a pervert, wanting to snatch her underwear. It would forever be a relief that she had never let him get this far, not even with her bra on.Now, however, all that was coveri
“Did you notice the car too?” Isaac asked, as Millicent looked in the rearview mirror at the sports car that was right behind them.“It's hard not to notice when I'm not making any effort to be discreet.” she grumbled, watching Austin's car almost get hit by another when the light they had just passed turned red “I don't know how many messages I've already had to send to Sage asking her not to intercept them. Jasmine must be very determined to become the new Mrs. Carnby if she is willing to watch her boyfriend become a stalker stalker.” Millicent sighed, relieved to realize that they were approaching Isaac's condominium “Are you sure you shouldn't notify your security team too? If Austin seems comfortable following us, I don't doubt he'll try to get in here.”"Don't worry. The security team at this place knows the
“I'm not even surprised they came all this way…” Millicent muttered as she watched her ex-fiancé and his girlfriend enter the bar, surrounded by an unnecessarily high number of security guards, as if they were celebrities or something “But knowing they probably had someone watching me, so they knew I was coming here, really pisses me off.”“I think it was too much for Austin to know you would continue to be seen with me without him being able to do anything to stop it.” Isaac commented, sitting comfortably in the chair next to hers, looking as resigned to the situation as Millicent.“Typical of him.” Millie grumbled, taking the last sip of her drink and trying to pretend just that small glass hadn't already messed with her head.“Do you want to leave?” “And let him think that just his mere presence is enough to make me back out of my date?” she just grunted, pulling her second drink closer “Never.”“Good girl.” A ghost of a smile appeared on Isaac's face and, to her surprise, he care
“Okay, Millie. The GPS says we’re almost there.” “Thanks, Josiah.” Millicent sighed, watching the city lights pass through the car window “But, you really didn't need to offer to drive me here. Another driver or even a member of Sage’s team could…”“Stop it right there, young lady. I know I'm old, but I'm still capable of putting in a few miles. I’ve done this my whole life, after all.” Thea's husband snorted, as if his pride was hurt “It's great to be retired and be able to just do nothing all day, especially now that Joshua has finally decided to give me some grandchildren. But, oddly enough, I still miss working. Especially when Thea and your parents make me go to those appointments where a butcher keeps breaking my bones…”“You know physical therapy is good for your arthritis.” Millie laughed “Also, you can drive as much as you want, as long as it doesn't harm your health. You just don't have to do this for our family, as if it were your obligation. I would really be fine coming
It was still impressive to Millicent that she had wasted so much of her life worrying about what other people were thinking about her. Now that she had simply accepted most of her co-workers thought only the worst about her, everything seemed easier and more predictable. Still cumbersome, no doubt, but much easier.“Look at her, thinking she rules over all of us, just because Austin’s brother is here today.” one of the secretaries grunted, probably not even imagining that Millicent could hear her from where she was in the break room “So, What does it matter if this man has money? It's not like he owns the company! I've heard people on the team comment that his frames have caused even a gentleman like Austin to lose his temper lately. I hate knowing we're all in the hands of arrogant idiots like them and that woman, Pauline or something. She thinks that, just because she has a few Oscars at home, she can walk around like she owns everything and everyone.”“Well, it seems like she’s been
“I think this sums up the changes that Ms. Poulin has asked to be made to the scripts approved so far.” Millicent said to the team, taking the slides she had prepared for that meeting off the projector “I ask you all have the utmost perfectionism when making these corrections. Remember, it wasn't easy to convince Mrs. Poulin to give us a vote of confidence. We need to prove to her that we are capable of meeting her expectations if we really want to receive her confirmation to begin pre-productions…”“Thanks, Miss. Bianchi.” Austin cut her off, clearly irritated after being forced to spend so much time just listening to her talk “As the leader of this project, I will take over from now on. After all, I'm sure that if Mrs. Poulin has finally decided to be a little less merciless towards us, it's because the requests I made to her have taken effect. So you can be sure that I will be able to do it again if nec
“Millicent!” Florence was the first to gasp, holding Austin's shoulders as if afraid of what his reaction would be to Millie's words “Did you even hear yourself? What do you think your parents would think if they heard you saying something like that?!”“You will regret standing by Isaac just to get to my son, Millicent.” Evan growled “He’s going to use you and abandon you the first chance he gets…”“The idiot you treat like your only son has done much worse.” Millie replied “Why not give the other one a chance? Besides, if you guys hate Isaac that much, then just seems like another reason to trust him.”“You… You fucking bitch…!” Austin shouted, breaking free of Florence's hands with a violence that wasn't
“What do you want?” she growled, not at all friendly, as the Carnbys surrounded her, cutting off any path she had to get out of there.“Please, Millie, don’t be so harsh with us.” Florence asked, approaching cautiously as if she were a wild animal “We just want to talk to you and this is the first opportunity we've had to do that in weeks. But clearly a room full of people was not the right place.”“So you guys decided to wait until the perfect time to get me alone, away from my family?” She crossed her arms against her chest.“You’re looking at this the wrong way, Millicent.” Evan sighed “I know what Austin did was terrible, but you've been like a daughter to us for a long time. Even before you started dating our son. Don’t you think that should be enough for you to consider giving us just a minute of your time?”“I thought all this time would also be enough for your son to have some loyalty, but apparently, I was wrong. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”“Austin made a mistake that he will r
“Mother…” Dante muttered, clearly surprised that this woman had come to him first.“What a lovely family reunion!” Florence said, either unable to read the tense mood in the air, or just ignoring it so she could focus on gaining Emma's favor “You see, Emma? Your son just wanted to talk to you. Aren't you glad you accepted my invitation? I said that besides talking about the business proposal my husband has for you, we could all get together. The Bianchis are yet to become one family with the Carnbys, I tell you…”"Get out." Emma cut her off, her voice still thin and merciless as Millicent remembered, even though she hadn't seen that woman since she was a toddler.“What…?” Florence stammered, trying to maintain her posture.
