“You can do this, Millie. Just… Breathe.”
Millicent muttered to herself, hoping her frantic thoughts might drown out the murmurs and sharp looks that followed her the instant she crossed the hallway.
“Oh, it looks like daddy’s little princess insisted on coming to yet another meeting… What do you think?” a female voice asked, mischievously “Is she finally going to present something today? Or just lean on Mr. Carnby’s work, as always…?”
“Are you crazy?!” another woman gasped “Lower your voice! Mr. Bianchi may not be here today, but he will definitely know if any of us are caught talking shit about his daughter!”
It would have been very easy for Millicent to simply turn around and confront them. However, since the last thing she wanted was to see someone on their knees, begging her to save their jobs, she just continued on her way, silently. Presenting her project was the only thing she should worry about and the only reason she was fighting her heavy eyes and her tired body. It had taken countless sleepless nights, but even her fiancé, Austin, who was an incorrigible perfectionist, had said nothing but compliments since the last time she had asked him to help her review everything.
Finally, she had managed to create something worthy of the Bianchi surname. Something that could make her father proud to have her in his company…
And, with luck, maybe even prove to the other employees that she was worthy of being there.
“Shut up, you useless piece of shit!” At the sudden sound of her fiancé's voice, Millicent's footsteps froze right in front of a door, where Austin's words only became clearer “I thought, after all this time, you would have at least learned where you belong. But, there you are. Opening a shitty business must have made you feel like you were on the same level of the real Carnbys, right?”
“My business is shit, but you and Evan still made a point of finding out about it?” a deep, gravelly voice replied “I’m flattered.”
“There is nothing more insignificant to me and father than the bankrupt company that you decided to try to resurrect! I hope it was worth making our lives hell because of that inheritance, because that shit is all you'll have! As for me, I'm not here to beg for a few crumbs of investment, like you. Massimo Bianchi is my father-in-law! And, today, I will become the main project manager of his Group’s new company!”
“Evan’s partners are still not convinced of your ability to inherit his role, are they? They'd rather see you fail the Bianchis than fail with the Carnbys. A smart move.” the other man responded, cynically “Well, congratulations on your greatest achievement. I’m sure the position of trophy husband to the Bianchi’s heiress is highly sought after and you will do very well being supported by her family for the rest of your life.”
“You bastard…!” Austin yelled, followed by what sounded like the sound of a piece of furniture being thrown to the floor “If you open your mouth again to talk shit about me, I will…!”
“Austin!” Millicent hurried to open the door and, before she could realize what she was doing, her body was already between the two men, trying to prevent Austin from punching the stranger.
The man, however, didn't seem affected by that situation at all. Instead, he just extended his arm, pushing Austin away without much effort. His shoulders were broad and he was extremely tall, probably close to 6'2 or even taller. His suit was perfectly aligned, but still, a few tattoos were peeking out from his neck and wrists. If they had seen each other before, Millicent probably wouldn't have forgotten about an intimidating figure like that, however...
Trapped in those blue eyes, clear and cold as the sky on a winter's day, Millicent found herself thinking about the faded memories of a boy she thought she would never see again. And, even though she knew it was almost impossible for her to be right, her lips still formed a name on impulse.
“Isaac…?”
“You don’t need to act like you’re seeing a ghost, Bianchi.” He narrowed his eyes, harshly “Your boyfriend has already expressed his displeasure at knowing I'm alive.”
“Don’t you dare talk bullshit to my future wife!” Austin stepped forward, not looking too thrilled that his missing brother was right there in front of them “Unlike you, she's about to become a Carnby worthy of this surname. And, even though you certainly don’t deserve this vote of confidence… I feel obliged to hand this over to my only brother.”
Fumbling in his jacket’s pocket for a moment, Austin pulled out an invitation to their wedding, extending it to Isaac. Millicent thought it was incredibly sweet he was happy enough to carry those invitations everywhere, but sometimes she wondered if it was really necessary for absolutely everyone they knew to be at the ceremony.
However, unlike the other guests, Isaac did not show the slightest bit of joy. Instead, he just roughly snatched the invitation from his brother's hands...
And tore it up.
“I see you haven't changed since High School, Bianchi.” he looked at her with contempt “You still settle for the worst possible choice. Well, I guess that's what makes you perfect for someone like Austin.” leaving Millicent frozen with his words, he just walked past her, heading towards the door. “Now, if you've had enough of disturbing me, I have a meeting I can't be late for.”
“This arrogant bastard…!” Austin muttered, bringing Millicent closer “I have no idea what brought him out of the depths of hell he hid in after running away from home or why he's here today. But, it’s more than clear he has not regretted any of the mistakes he made in the past. Stay away from him, baby. It’s the best we can do.” he sighed as he kissed her temple, but before Millicent could even organize her thoughts, Austin was already pulling her out of the office “Come on. We can't be late and miss the opportunity to watch that idiot's ego get trampled on by the new investor. Nobody knows much about him, but I've heard a lot of stories about him being quite strict.”
“Uh… Shouldn’t we call your father?” she asked, although Austin didn't seem to be paying attention "I mean, I know their relationship was never very close, but still, Isaac is the son Evan hasn't seen in almost six years..."
Her words died the instant Austin opened the meeting room door. However, it wasn't just the many executives and their assistants who were inside, including her friend Jasmine, Austin's secretary. Isaac was also there, but not sitting at a separate table, as was usually the case with businesspeople trying to secure some investment. He was perched at the end of the long table, with a confident posture, as if the entire hotel belonged to him.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” Austin scolded him, furious “How you dare…?”
“I would advise you to watch your tone when speaking to me, Mr. Carnby…” Isaac interrupted him “Whether I am the main investor in this company or not, I can always reconsider my decision to put my money into the Bianchi’s business.”
“What do you think you’re talking about…?!” Austin sneered, but when the other executives just remained silent, his ironic expression turned to horror.
“Oh, so the last name wasn’t just a coincidence?” one of the old men asked, seeming oblivious to the atmosphere that had taken over the room “I had almost forgotten that Evan had another son…”
“I came here to analyze project proposals, not to talk about my family tree.” Isaac said, his cold eyes still fixed on Austin “Sit down, Mr. Carnby. Since you seem so eager to be heard, we might start with your project as well.”
Swallowing hard, Millicent followed her fiancé to the only two chairs still empty. Even though she knew that Austin had certainly created an incredible project after so many months of giving up their time together just to work, she could still feel his tension radiating, as his brother's merciless gaze was upon them. Wanting to show how much she trusted him, Millicent reached under the table for Austin's hand, while her fiancé forced a smile in front of the executives.
“It will be my pleasure.” he replied, turning to Jasmine “Please, Miss. Easton. Put on the screen the file we worked on.”
Still with her hand wrapped in his, Millicent stared at the projector beside them, certain that not even Isaac Carnby and the hurts he held about the past could be able to overshadow her fiancé's talent. However, as soon as the screen lit up, her smile gradually disappeared.
Because, there, was the presentation of her project. With Austin’s name.
“And that is my proposal, gentlemen.” Still motionless, Millicent watched her fiancé sit down, not even looking in her direction as the executives began to chat among themselves, clearly satisfied. Austin just remained smiling, almost as if he hadn't realized he had just introduced her project as his own, repeating every single word she had rehearsed exhaustively over the past few days. “An excellent presentation as always, Mr. Carnby.” one of the executives praised “Now, to complete our list, we have… Oh. Miss. Bianchi.” the old man snorted, causing all the eyes at the table to turn to her, but not in a friendly way.For a moment, Millicent managed to part her lips, but no words dared to come out. What could she say to convince these men that the project they were praising had been entirely hers? Should she just embarrass herself like that, even though she knew they would just laugh and mock her? “Millicent decided to take a break from her own project to help me with mine.” Austin
For a moment, the hallway was so silent that, in the midst of her shock and horror, Millicent even wondered if she was hallucinating, after such a terrible day.But Jasmine didn't let that doubt last more than a second. “Yes, Austin, baby! Harder!”“What the fuck…!” Sage growled under his breath “Those bastards! I can't believe it…! Millie? Millie, wait…!”Ignoring that low request, Millicent just let her feet guide her numb body to Jasmine's bedroom door, where not only did the suggestive growls become clearer, but she could also hear a second voice. The voice of someone who was obviously there with Jasmine, but who was still like a knife in Millicent's chest.“I already told you to shut up!” Austin grunted, but there was a clear smile in his voice.“Why?” Jasmine proved, her voice distorted with a malice that Millie would never have imagined her sweet and joyful friend was capable of “Are you afraid that some guard will hear us again…? Or, maybe, that your precious baby girl may be
As soon as she knocked on the door of Isaac's room for the first time, Millicent had to muster all her concentration not to tremble. About ten minutes had passed since she had heard Austin and Jasmine say things she would never forget, but the realization only seemed to be hitting her at that moment, as the tension grew in her chest. The mix of anger and a broken heart had made it seem like her only choice, but…Was she really about to do something like that? However, before she could even reflect on that question, the door opened and, suddenly, Isaac was there, making her swallow hard. He was wearing just sweatpants and a towel around his shoulder. His dark blond hair was still damp and, to her surprise, his chest was not just covered in muscles and tattoos, but also scars, some so deep that not even the ink could hide. It was probably the result of the accident he got into after driving drunk when they were teenagers, but still…“Let me guess…” he interrupted his thoughts, with thos
“Oh, baby… You promised me you would let me drink something before we enjoyed our last moments at the hotel…”Jasmine's giggle was pretty audible, but Millicent just ignored it and continued staring at the long, impeccably arranged table in front of her, patiently waiting for her guests to arrive at that particular bar in the hotel.“Millicent!” Austin gasped and, only then, did she allow herself to turn around, wearing the best smile she had rehearsed “What are you doing here?” She watched Austin pull away from Jasmine suddenly, arranging his robe like he was the epitome of chastity and Jasmine had her hair messed up like that just because of a good night's sleep. It was sickening to realize they had never made such a point of hiding those clues, but Millicent just turned a blind eye to it, acting like the blind idiot she knew they were hoping to find."Good morning. I hope you guys are hungry.” was all she said, as warmly as she could manage “I woke up early and asked the chef to pr
“Are you sure you’re okay, Millie?” Sage’s murmur in her ear made Millicent’s head throb, but even so she quickly disguised her expression, giving her bodyguard the calmest smile she was able to force."I am fine. It's just a little fever. The pills may be taking a while to work, but I'm sure I'll be better soon.” she tried to convince even herself, dragging her haggard body in the direction of where the hotel employees were carrying her bags “I think the last few days have taken more of a toll on me than I expected.” Millie grumbled, needing to hold her heavy head for a moment “You look irritated. Did something happen?”"No. Things are going as you predicted.” Sage growled lowly, clearly furious “But that bastard had the audacity to take his bitch on your father's jet and leave you here, all alone...” “Don’t worry. I know.” Millie muttered, taking out her cell phone to look one last time at the messages Austin had sent her.“Hey, baby. I hope your shopping in the city was good, beca
Millicent's body felt as heavy as lead when she managed to open her eyes, but at least her head wasn't hurting anymore. The last thing she remembered was being carried by Isaac to a seat on his plane, where an old doctor with a kind smile had given her some more pills. However, those had been strong enough to knock her out in a way that she didn't even know how much time had passed. Although they were certainly no longer on the ground, as there were clouds passing by the small window nearby...And Isaac was sitting in the armchair right in front of hers. His broad body dominated everything and made even that huge padded chair seem small. He still looked cold and intimidating, even though he looked casual like that, as he checked something on the tablet in his hands. But the way he was no longer wearing a jacket and the top few buttons on his shirt were half open made Millicent blush. Damn, she was too sick
“Are you going to say what’s wrong? Or are you going to make us take it from you?”At the sound of that question, Millicent instinctively lowered her laptop screen a little, but didn't close it completely when she realized who was standing at the door to her room. “Oh, sorry. Did I make you wait too long? I think I'm a little late…” with a smile, she got up from the desk and went to her mother and her best friend, but Cassidy obviously didn't buy it, crossing her arms over her chest and looking at her suspiciously.“It’s been an hour since you said you’d come to your room and take a call.” Cassie countered “I think this goes a little further than being late.”“Are you sure you’re feeling okay, honey? You barely touched your food and went upstairs to lock yourself in your room in the middle of a family lunch…” her mother murmured, her look full of concern “You usually love it when we get together, but now, there seems to be something upsetting you…”“I'm sorry for making you worry. I a
During the entire year Millicent had been working at the Bianchi Group's head office after finishing college, she felt as uncomfortable as a bird trapped in a tiny cage. However, that day was being particularly difficult to bear, but not for the reasons she was used to.The other employees didn't even seem to have noticed her presence that day, unlike what always happened. They were all too busy talking to each other about how great Austin's project was and how lucky they were to have been chosen to be part of his team. There didn't seem to be a single person who wasn't completely sure his venture would be a complete success. After all, everything he had proposed before, even as a mere intern, had fantastic results before.Everything he had proposed and she had carried out for him without even realizing it. Like an idiot.“Millie!” That shrill voice made her want to quicken her steps, but still Millicent fought herself and turned to watch Jasmine advance
"What...? What did you just say?" Millicent gasped, but instead of answering her or at least appearing aware of the shocking words that had just come out of her mouth, Laura simply sighed and turned her back to her, beginning to walk away.“I knew I should have waited longer to talk about this with you…”"Mrs. Poulin! Wait!" Millie stuttered, starting to follow her around the room, needing to control herself to keep her voice low "Mrs. Poulin...! Laura! You can't just say something like that and leave...!""Stop making a fuss. I'm not leaving." Laura suddenly grabbed her wrist and only then did Millicent realize that they were now on a small balcony at one end of the party room, hidden from all the other guests. “I just don't want to talk about it in an environment where anyone could overhear and tell Emma.”“So… You… You really are…” Millicent had to hold her own head for a moment, feeling dizzy “But… How is it possible that Emma has a daughter and no one ever knew about it…?”“Becau
"And I think this will be enough for us to close the contract with the actors. What do you think, Ms. Bianchi...? Ms. Bianchi?"“Uh… Yes.” The sound of her name being called by one of Laura's friends forced Millicent to snap out of her thoughts and at least pretend she was paying attention to what they were saying "That's great. Please keep me posted."“Uh…Of course.” The woman exchanged a quick glance with Laura, as if she was doubting whether Millicent was the one they should be discussing these matters with "The casting coordinator is here somewhere. If you give me a moment, I can find him and bring him here. They have a lot more details on the matter than I do. If you'll excuse me."“Thank you.” Millicent smiled, trying to sound as focused and interested as possible, but obviously not enough to fool anyone. Not even that woman whose name Millie hadn't memorized, much less Laura.“If you can’t pay attention to what’s being said, then why did you come here today?” Laura questioned h
“So… Are we just going to leave him like that?” Isaac was still lying on the couch in the middle of his living room when that question, coming from Dominic, reached his ears. Not that it would have encouraged him to move, anyway. There didn't seem to be any strength within him to do that.“He brought this on himself.” Vincent snorted, dismissive "I warned him a long time ago what it mean involving the Bianchi girl in our plans. And, most importantly, I warned him about developing feelings for her. If he's now paying the price for not listening to me, then that's entirely his problem. Leave him there pretending to be a corpse, if that's what he wants."“You’re always a great help, old man.” Dominic snorted "I've told you this several times, but I'll say it again: just because you want to risk your life all the time in the mafia's sights doesn't mean we both have to do this too. Isaac has the right to want to have a wife, get married, have a family and all that. In case you don't rememb
There was an elephant in the room at Millicent’s house. And she was fully aware it was herself.“Give her some space, Massimo.” her mother murmured outside her room, but, as no one among the Bianchis was exactly silent, Millie could hear every word "She'll tell us what happened when she's ready. She's no longer a child who needs our help dealing with her own feelings.""And what do you expect me to do? For me to stand here, pretending like I didn't notice that she was hurt again?!" her father growled "Did you see how she acted after she came back from the office? She couldn't even look us in the eye without looking like she wanted to cry. And now this news that Sage Carpenter asked to step down as her bodyguard?! Something happened! And I'm sure it has something to do with Evan's oldest son! I knew I shouldn't have let him so close to her after we found out what his brother did! Now my daughter is heartbroken again and it's all the Carnby's fault…!”“Don’t make a hasty decision, love.”
“You’re not even going to try to answer me?” Millicent asked, when the silence in the room began to last too long. "Or are you buying time to think of a way to turn this situation around and convince me that everything is fine? After all, I'm very easy to fool, apparently." Her hands balled into fists, but she couldn't even recognize if what she was feeling at that moment was anger.“Millie…” he murmured and hearing him say her nickname like that, as if he really cared about her, as if somehow he was also suffering, only revolted her more."I asked..." she growled, her voice firm, even though she felt as if something was unraveling inside her chest "If that was your plan from the beginning. You made me think this was all my idea when, in fact, you had planned every detail so that I would have no one else to turn to other than you..." her hands started to shake slightly, but she refused to show it "I thought we were helping each other when I suggested that partnership, but... In the en
Austin's words left Millicent so shocked she just froze for a second. However, it was still enough time for him to take advantage of her hesitation to play the video, causing the man in the suit on the small screen to start moving.“Very well.” the recording of Austin’s voice said, out of camera range “Start talking.”“Uh… I'm not entirely sure about that, Mr. Carnby…” the man loosened his tie, clearly uncomfortable."I already told you. I'll pay double what he offered you that day. Triple if necessary. You accepted his money quite easily back then for breaking your security procedures, didn't you? Why hesitate now?"“It wasn’t that simple, either…!” the man seemed to try to argue, but, as he looked over the recording, probably where Austin was, he ended up shrinking, almost as if he was trying to conform "Alright... Five months ago, when the rooms and offices of our hotel were reserved by the Bianchi Group, I was responsible for putting together the best possible security arrangement.
"We know we look terrible, Millie. You don't have to stare at us like we're two abandoned dogs." Cassidy grumbled, rubbing the deep dark circles under her eyes, while Frankie just continued to sip her coffee as if she were drinking water."It's not that." Millicent lamented "It's just... You don't have to go through this. Let me talk to my father. I know I can get you out of Jasmine and Miles' hands...""You spent months thinking you'd lost your project, but you never thought about talking to your father. And now you want to do this just because we lost a few hours of sleep? That's so... You." Cassidy laughed, without much humor "Look, as much as I would love to change positions and have the freedom to tell that bitch to fuck off, Mr. Davis has already talked to me privately. The only thing that annoys me is it took him giving me pity to actually get me close to the promotion I always wanted. I've worked at this company since college, but Jasmine was more relevant than all the effort
Hello everyone!First of all, I would like to apologize for all these weeks of inactivity. I didn't mean to be away for so long. Thank you very much for all the support and kind words from all of you. My father is okay, but he still needs to do some tests to confirm or deny the doctors' suspicions of prostate cancer. These next few weeks will be quite turbulent for me, but honestly, I want to get through them doing what I love: writing. That's why Millie's story is back and, hopefully, this month we will finish it in the best way possible
“Isaac?” Millicent blinked and, unlikely as it was, he was there when she turned, looking as shocked as she felt to see him standing there in the middle of Evangeline Greco's small garden.“What are you doing here?” he asked again, his voice not only surprised but also alarmed and irritated. However, Millicent didn't need much to realize that, even though he was looking in her direction, strangely that question wasn't directed at her.The person next to Isaac looked young, although he was easily the size of three men. Isaac was already extremely tall, but somehow this stranger seemed built like a wall, even though he was Millicent's age at most. He had brown hair and even darker eyes, making it look like his pupils were just two empty spots on his face. It was quite intimidating, Millie had to admit, but at least it wasn't her that stranger was focused on.“Evangeline.” the man next to Isaac said, his voice hard and demanding “Why is there a Bianchi in the house?”“Because this is my
