As soon as she knocked on the door of Isaac's room for the first time, Millicent had to muster all her concentration not to tremble. About ten minutes had passed since she had heard Austin and Jasmine say things she would never forget, but the realization only seemed to be hitting her at that moment, as the tension grew in her chest. The mix of anger and a broken heart had made it seem like her only choice, but…
Was she really about to do something like that?
However, before she could even reflect on that question, the door opened and, suddenly, Isaac was there, making her swallow hard. He was wearing just sweatpants and a towel around his shoulder. His dark blond hair was still damp and, to her surprise, his chest was not just covered in muscles and tattoos, but also scars, some so deep that not even the ink could hide. It was probably the result of the accident he got into after driving drunk when they were teenagers, but still…
“Let me guess…” he interrupted his thoughts, with those icy eyes “My brother did some shit, didn’t he?”
“I…” Millicent sniffed, blushing as she realized she should have at least tried to hide her swollen eyes and her blotchy face “I need to talk to you. It’s important.” She tried to sound firm, despite her shaky voice.
Instead of answering, he just stood there, staring at her as the minutes ticked by, almost naked and intimidating. It wasn't until Millicent's tension reached its breaking point that he finally moved, entering the room and leaving the door open behind him. Hesitantly, Millicent just followed him, quietly closing the door as Isaac stopped next to a pair of armchairs directly in front of his bed. The entire room smelled strongly of nicotine mixed with some fresh cologne, a potent but also strangely addictive smell.
“Would my guest like a drink?” he said, not looking very hospitable as he poured himself a glass of whiskey.
"No." Millicent tried her best not to stutter as she sat across from him“I… I don't want to take up your time, so I'll be quick. And frank. I don't know if you know, but last week, a partnership contract was signed between the Carnbys and the Bianchi Group…”
“It would be hard not to know, when Evan is bragging about it everywhere he goes.” Isaac took a sip of his drink, but made no move to approach her.
“That’s right…” she gritted her teeth as she imagined that scene “That’s why I need you… To finish this contract.” Millicent forced herself to stay focused on those unreadable eyes as soon as those words slipped out “I want to propose a deal to you. A partnership. And it won't just be beneficial for my family's company, that's for sure. If you accept, your gain will not just be the loss the Carnbys will suffer. I will make sure the Bianchi Group's relationships with your companies can be expanded, as well as your profit and the possibilities you have of receiving investments…”
“I think you're going a little too fast, Miss. Bianchi.” he interrupted her, with a hint of a smile on his face “But, that’s okay. I can see that nervousness steals the eloquence you demonstrated in the meeting earlier.”
“I…”
“Before you continue…” again he shushed her, but this time walking over to where Millicent was, until he stopped in front of her, still standing closer than was comfortable “Maybe I should let you know I’m not in the habit of get involved with the wives of men who want to see my ruin.”
“I'm not Austin's wife! And I never will be!” she snapped, trying to hold back the tears that were building up.
“What a shame… I wonder what my little brother could have done to bring about such a radical change of mind…” Isaac scoffed “Although, from your reaction, I can imagine…”
“I ask you to take this conversation seriously, Mr. Carnby!” she grunted, but his only response was to turn away from her, again toward the drink bottle “At least listen to what I have to say and the details of my proposal. It’s something equally beneficial to both of us…!” Millicent insist, but when he continued to act almost as if she weren't there, the built-up anger got the best of her, causing her to needle him at the point where he couldn't ignore “I can make you the CEO of Evan Carnby’s companies. The same companies that once belonged to your mother.”
She regretted that last sentence before she even finished speaking, because Isaac's glass slammed against the table and his eyes slowly turned to her, sharper than ever.
“I had no idea that you were so well informed about my personal affairs.” he commented, making a shiver run down her spine.
“I… I only know what Austin… What your brother told me about your battle for your mother's inheritance.” she corrected herself, feeling as if that name was acidic on her tongue “But that's enough for me to know the Bianchi's support could be useful in convincing Evan's partners that you're a better option than Austin to become the future CEO. It may seem like the decision is up to Evan alone, but that's a lie. If you demonstrate better results than Austin and strong allies, the investors will side with you despite your reputation. And not even Evan can fight the choice of the men who own a large portion of the shares in his companies.”
Holding her breath, Millicent waited for him to respond, hopeful she had been convincing enough. However, Isaac remained impassive, watching her as if Millicent had said the most predictable thing possible, until he finally broke the silence.
“And what exactly is your plan to make Austin pay, Ms. Bianchi?”
“There is this clause in the contract…”
“It seems I wasn’t clear enough.” Isaac said and, to her shock, walked towards her until he leaned over her, placing his hands on the arms of the chair and leaving her completely trapped “Not saying your intentions doesn't mean you didn't make them clear, Millicent. You are here to get revenge.” Her face was just a few centimeters from hers, so close that his smell left her dizzy “But did you really stop to think about what you just proposed to me? Do you realize that not just Austin, but countless people are going to turn against you for getting involved with the disgraced Carnby son? I know your reputation.” he murmured, his voice even deeper than normal “Is the Bianchi’s good girl really willing to deal with the consequences of her plan just to get to her boyfriend? Or will you wake up tomorrow and want to take it back, as soon as he whispers some sweet words in your ear and convinces you to forgive him?”
“You…” her voice trailed off for a moment “You have no idea what he did to me. I would never forgive him…”
“If that's true, then why are you here, hiding in my room and making plans in secret, instead of confronting him directly and using your own power to make him suffer? After all, with or without my help, you’re still a Bianchi, aren’t you?” His eyes remained fixed on hers, confronting her until Millicent couldn't even remember that she was capable of speaking "That's what I thought." he sneered, turning away from her “You may go, Miss. Bianchi. It's very clear that you prefer the easiest and most cowardly path possible, the kind that won't cause the slightest inconvenience to anyone, not even the fiancé you claim to hate. And the last thing I need is a business partner who doesn't have the courage to do what's necessary.”
“I…” Millicent dug her nails into her own knees, but even then she couldn’t say anything.
Not after realizing he was right.
“You should go.” he repeated “I believe it wouldn't be good for your reputation if someone saw you leaving your brother-in-law's room so late at night.”
“If… If I proved you wrong about me…” she was finally able to force the words out “Would you change your mind about helping me?”
“I think you should first convince yourself that you are capable, Miss. Bianchi.” Isaac teased her, turning his back on her again and, this time, Millicent just got up and obeyed him, leaving the room.
“Millie!” Sage panted, standing just a few steps away from the door, waiting for her “Are you okay? Did that man do something? Should I call your parents…?”
"No." she stopped her, walking away from that room “The only person I need to call is my wedding planner.”
“At this time?” Sage blinked in disbelief “I think you can cancel the engagement party later…”
“No, I can't.” Millicent replied, lost in her own thoughts “Because I'm going to bring the party forward.”
“Oh, baby… You promised me you would let me drink something before we enjoyed our last moments at the hotel…”Jasmine's giggle was pretty audible, but Millicent just ignored it and continued staring at the long, impeccably arranged table in front of her, patiently waiting for her guests to arrive at that particular bar in the hotel.“Millicent!” Austin gasped and, only then, did she allow herself to turn around, wearing the best smile she had rehearsed “What are you doing here?” She watched Austin pull away from Jasmine suddenly, arranging his robe like he was the epitome of chastity and Jasmine had her hair messed up like that just because of a good night's sleep. It was sickening to realize they had never made such a point of hiding those clues, but Millicent just turned a blind eye to it, acting like the blind idiot she knew they were hoping to find."Good morning. I hope you guys are hungry.” was all she said, as warmly as she could manage “I woke up early and asked the chef to pr
“Are you sure you’re okay, Millie?” Sage’s murmur in her ear made Millicent’s head throb, but even so she quickly disguised her expression, giving her bodyguard the calmest smile she was able to force."I am fine. It's just a little fever. The pills may be taking a while to work, but I'm sure I'll be better soon.” she tried to convince even herself, dragging her haggard body in the direction of where the hotel employees were carrying her bags “I think the last few days have taken more of a toll on me than I expected.” Millie grumbled, needing to hold her heavy head for a moment “You look irritated. Did something happen?”"No. Things are going as you predicted.” Sage growled lowly, clearly furious “But that bastard had the audacity to take his bitch on your father's jet and leave you here, all alone...” “Don’t worry. I know.” Millie muttered, taking out her cell phone to look one last time at the messages Austin had sent her.“Hey, baby. I hope your shopping in the city was good, beca
Millicent's body felt as heavy as lead when she managed to open her eyes, but at least her head wasn't hurting anymore. The last thing she remembered was being carried by Isaac to a seat on his plane, where an old doctor with a kind smile had given her some more pills. However, those had been strong enough to knock her out in a way that she didn't even know how much time had passed. Although they were certainly no longer on the ground, as there were clouds passing by the small window nearby...And Isaac was sitting in the armchair right in front of hers. His broad body dominated everything and made even that huge padded chair seem small. He still looked cold and intimidating, even though he looked casual like that, as he checked something on the tablet in his hands. But the way he was no longer wearing a jacket and the top few buttons on his shirt were half open made Millicent blush. Damn, she was too sick
“Are you going to say what’s wrong? Or are you going to make us take it from you?”At the sound of that question, Millicent instinctively lowered her laptop screen a little, but didn't close it completely when she realized who was standing at the door to her room. “Oh, sorry. Did I make you wait too long? I think I'm a little late…” with a smile, she got up from the desk and went to her mother and her best friend, but Cassidy obviously didn't buy it, crossing her arms over her chest and looking at her suspiciously.“It’s been an hour since you said you’d come to your room and take a call.” Cassie countered “I think this goes a little further than being late.”“Are you sure you’re feeling okay, honey? You barely touched your food and went upstairs to lock yourself in your room in the middle of a family lunch…” her mother murmured, her look full of concern “You usually love it when we get together, but now, there seems to be something upsetting you…”“I'm sorry for making you worry. I a
During the entire year Millicent had been working at the Bianchi Group's head office after finishing college, she felt as uncomfortable as a bird trapped in a tiny cage. However, that day was being particularly difficult to bear, but not for the reasons she was used to.The other employees didn't even seem to have noticed her presence that day, unlike what always happened. They were all too busy talking to each other about how great Austin's project was and how lucky they were to have been chosen to be part of his team. There didn't seem to be a single person who wasn't completely sure his venture would be a complete success. After all, everything he had proposed before, even as a mere intern, had fantastic results before.Everything he had proposed and she had carried out for him without even realizing it. Like an idiot.“Millie!” That shrill voice made her want to quicken her steps, but still Millicent fought herself and turned to watch Jasmine advance
“Calm down, Millicent. You decided to take it this far. You have no right to be a coward now.” Millicent growled softly at her own reflection in the mirror, as she tried to keep her breathing steady. The bathroom where she was, in one of the attached rooms at the back of the Bianchi Mansion, wasn't that close to the gardens, but even so Millicent could still hear every sound coming from the engagement party outside. Determination was still guiding her when she had woken up that morning and got dressed for the event, but… Now that all those guests were there, a crowd made up not only of her family, but also of practically all of the Bianchi Group's executives, who would certainly spread the new gossip as soon as Millicent made the first move…She couldn't feel so confident anymore. In fact, thinking about all the looks she would have to endure and all the whispers she would have to hear was making her feel suffocated, even though nothing had happened yet.Maybe Isaac was right not to tr
“Millicent?”Millie didn't know how long it had been since she stood there among the trees, silently watching the engagement party taking place up ahead. However, not even the gentle touch of her mother's hand on her shoulder was able to completely take her out of that almost trance-like state.“I… Am I really making the right decision?” That line certainly made her sound like an insecure child, but, at that moment, Millicent couldn't even bring herself to care about that.“You seemed right about that earlier. I would like to ask what is making you doubt yourself, but I think I already know the answer.” Alice sighed “I promised myself I would never allow the pressures of High Society to hurt you, but I have clearly failed in my duty as a mother.”
Austin was clearly not comfortable. Millicent had seen that crooked smile and those nervous eyes enough times to know that. But, there, among the guests and with some curious looks already turning to him, Austin didn't even make a move to question her, as Millicent had already expected.“Oh, baby… You’re so sweet.” Austin caressed her face, but Millicent stepped away before he could hug her “I'm the one who should have prepared something special to celebrate the fact the greatest woman in the world is about to become my Mrs. Carnby.” he sighed, as if he were nothing more than a lovesick fool.“Gosh. Now I see why you've been so busy the last few days, darling.” Jasmine laughed and, where before Millicent would have seen nothing but sweetness, now she was able to see the mockery “Did you manage to get this amazing party going and still find time to surprise your fiancé? You're so amazing, sweetie... See, Austin? That's why I always said that you shouldn't spend so much time locked in t
"Why did you come back?" Millicent questioned, frustrated "You clearly left not only your name and your life, but also your entire past behind. Anyone can see that you got the happy life you wanted, alongside your husband. So... Why now? If you didn't come back for so many years, even knowing the kind of person you had left Isaac alone with... What changed?"“I always wanted to go back for Isaac.” she stated, shrinking "But... Circumstances were never favorable enough... Until he became an adult and it seemed to be too late. But, I never left him helpless. Neither he nor my brother." Imogen chewed on her lower lip "I shouldn't have been surprised that Vincent suspected I was alive. He was always good at seeing more than other people were capable of. That was one of the reasons I left Isaac. I knew his uncle would protect him, especially after he turned 18. I just didn't expect Vince to involve him in his damn revenge plans!" Imogen growled "He should have left Isaac alone! Help him go
“You can start talking.” Millicent snapped, after several minutes had passed, lengthening that terribly uncomfortable silence between them “That's what you came here for, isn't it?”"Yes, I..." Imogen's voice shook, almost breaking "It's just... I think I spent too much time trying to forget the past. Talking about it isn't as simple as opening your mouth and letting the words come out." She massaged her own throat for a moment, as if it were actually a physical pain “How much… How much do you know about what my life was like, when I was still Imogen Carnby?”“I know what your son and your brother told me.” Millie sighed "I know your relationship with your father wasn't good and your marriage with Evan was terrible. But, I still don't think that justifies it..." “Terrible is quite a kind word for my situation at that time.” Imogen interrupted, with a dark smile "It's not like I blame Vincent for not knowing how to tell my side of the story properly. He was preoccupied with his own pro
"That's why I'm going to take action, Millicent… Millicent? Millicent!" Laura’s voice gradually rose on the other end of the call, until it pierced Millicent’s thoughts “Can you hear me?”"I'm sorry, Laura, I..." Millie sighed, supporting her head with her free hand "I'm just a little distracted. Today was... A long day.""You've been saying that all week. Frankly, Isaac Carnby isn't worth that much that you're losing sleep over him." Laura grumbled and Millicent had to bite her tongue to keep from admitting that, besides him, her mother was also haunting her all the time lately. “Did you even hear what I said?”"Yes. Uncle Dante had already mentioned at our last dinner that he received an invitation to Emma's ball. Not that it's a surprise. It's been like this since I can remember: they fight, he moves away from her and then Emma tries to get closer. I think she lives in eternal denial that her son has completely moved away from her." Millie sighed “But… I admit I didn’t hear the part
"Take a sip of water and pull yourself together, Ms. Bianchi. I don't think either of us are going to get out of here anytime soon if you keep sitting there shaking, instead of talking."Millicent tried to swallow the lump in her throat as she looked up to see Isaac's uncle placing a glass of water on the table in front of her, before sitting down on the sofa, his hands folded on top of his cane dismissively. He could have let her in, but his manner wasn't exactly friendly. She had hoped that he might simply shatter her theories the moment she mentioned her sister's name, whether by sending her away or yelling at her for mentioning Imogen Carnby's name out of nowhere.Yet there he was, completely silent and staring at her as if he were waiting for a confession. And honestly, Millicent was indeed feeling like she was being interrogated, even though they were both silent. After all, how exactly was she supposed to say she had seen his dead sister, without sounding crazy?“I… I’m sorry f
Millicent had promised herself that she would no longer approach Isaac. And, theoretically, she was fulfilling her promise. She was back in the building where they had met so many times to make love, spend the day together or just talk. Not even she was in denial enough to say it didn't affect her, especially after the cold and indifferent way Isaac had treated her days ago... But, what really mattered was that she wasn't in danger of finding him there at any moment. She had made sure of that…Even if it meant joining forces with someone else she hadn't yet forgiven.“Everything is clean.” Sage said on her side, typing message after message to her team "His car is already miles away. And, if by any chance he decides to come back, I'll make sure you have enough time to get out of here safely and discreetly."“Thank you.” was all Millicent replied, without much enthusiasm.Being around Sage again reminded her of the friendship the two shared. Or rather, she thought they shared. Knowing
Millicent’s heart beat so fast that, for an instant, she thought it would escape her chest. A terrible shiver seemed to run through her body and into her veins, and for a second she felt almost as if she were about to faint. But, fortunately, no one there seemed to notice her condition. No one but the woman named Dasha Nikolaev, whose eyes kept darting back and forth in Millicent's direction nervously, almost as if she were afraid of something.“Oh, what a lovely piece.” Mrs. Davis praised, taking the small pearl between her fingers “So simple and yet so charming…”“Thank you.” Dasha cleared her throat, turning her face to the side as if to avoid Millicent's gaze at all costs "I got them from my husband a long time ago. It was terrible that I lost the pair, ages ago..." she hesitated, as if she had lost herself in thought for a moment "But, Mr. Sokolov sure did a fantastic job. It's as if I have the original pearl with me again. Vasily will certainly be impressed too. He has been insis
Millicent had been regretting many of her decisions lately, there was no denying it. And, the moment she had removed Sage from her position as head of security, a part of Millie had always known that she would bitterly regret it at some point. But she didn't imagine it would be that much.“You shouldn’t be here, Ms. Bianchi.” James Moore, the new head of security that her father had personally appointed for her, repeated for the hundredth time as they walked through the small garden of the Greco estate “It’s not safe.”“But you’re with me, aren’t you?” Millie said, trying to sound friendly, although he was starting to get on her nerves with all that inflexibility "Your team is all spread out and I'm not delusional enough to think you didn't send our location to your backup. So please relax, Mr. Moore. I just want to visit a friend..."“Whoever your friend is and why she is here, it is still a situation that needs to be reported to your father.” he said, not as a question, but as a stat
“If you’re too nervous to attend this meeting, then I can make up some excuse for you to go home.” Laura muttered under her breath, sitting in the chair next to Millicent.“This is absolutely unnecessary.” Millicent snorted and, for what seemed like the hundredth time in just the last hour, squeezed her knees under the table, trying to calm the nervous movement of her leg "I'm the manager of two of this company's main projects. Why shouldn't I be present during the monthly accounting with our investor?" Her teeth ground together before she could even hide it.“Your father spent the whole dinner yesterday talking everybody ears off about you being confined in a room with Isaac Carnby today.” she sighed, with a mix of annoyance and a bit of what seemed to be... Worry, perhaps? "Frankly, I still think it's a little ridiculous that he would have that kind of concern about a woman his age, but... I have to admit that I've never had children. I don't know what it feels like to worry 24/7 abo
“Vincent…!” Isaac tried to react, but the other son of a bitch had already jumped on him too, holding his arms behind his back hard enough for him to feel the bones in his wrists creak, as if they were about to break."Oh, don't be so worried. I used to discipline my new partners in much worse ways in the past. You can ask his uncle later." Ugo laughed, his almost disappearing under the strong wind around them and Vincent's grunts of pain, while Ugo's bodyguard continued to punch and kick him without mercy, not giving him even the slightest opportunity to try to get up from the ground "He's going to be fine. You probably don't know, but your uncle has been through much worse...."“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Isaac twitched, causing the grip on the man's hands holding him to falter, only for the next instant an
