Jasmine’s POV

I and Lena had finally spoken.

We talked late into the night and eventually fell asleep around the late hours of the morning.

Regan had not returned and I knew it was because he knew that Lena and I needed each other.

It was another reason why I loved him.

He was very thoughtful and always put my needs before his.

When Lena and I woke up the next morning, we held each other for a while before leaving the bed to go about our daily routines.

Lena returned to her room and I washed us before Regan returned.

When he finally did, he knocked once in the door to let me know he was coming in before pushing the door open and entering into our room.

I took one look at his face and knew that something had happened.

“What has happened?” I asked, making my way over to him and taking his hand.

He simply shook his head, a sad look on his face that worried me.

I pulled him over to the bed and gently pushed him to sit, before taking my place beside him.

“Please, tell me what has happened”, I asked.

He took in a long breath and let it out.

“I did something awful”, he finally said, looking down at our joined hands.

My mind began to wander at his words.

What could he have done that was so awful?

Lifting up a hand, I placed it on his chin and lifted his face so I could see his eyes.

He looked away immediately.

“What did you do?” I asked him, willing his eyes to meet mine.

He hung his head in shame.

“I hurt Luke”, he said, his voice coming out in a whisper.

I felt my body tense up before I could stop it.

Granted, I had not expected such surprising news, especially in regards to Luke.

I forced myself to focus on him and not allow myself to accommodate such thoughts of concern.

“I am sure it was an accident”, I told him. “And he has healed from it already, has he not?” I asked, my voice filled with the worry I tried so much to hide to leases his guilt.

He shook his head slowly.

“Nana would have to help for him to fully recover”, he said and I gasped in surprise. Still he went on, his head hanging lower as he spoke. “And it was no accident”, he said.

I didn’t realize when I let go of his chin and pulled my hand to my chest.

Just how badly had he hurt Luke.

“What happened?” I asked instead.

He took another breath before answering my question.

“We were angry and Rage snapped”, he said. “I tried to stop him but maybe a part of me just wanted him to hurt too”, he confessed.

I looked closely at him, clearly seeing the guilt, regret and sadness.

“Why were you hurt?” I asked him, placing a hand on his shoulder in comfort.

He went silent.

When I realized that he was not ready to speak of the cause of his hurt, I changed the topic.

“What did Nana say of his would?” I asked instead.

He slowly lifted a shoulder in a shrug before putting it down.

“I do not know”, he said. “I came here immediately”.

“But I wonder”, I said, thinking aloud. “What could Luke have possibly done that would make Rage attack him?”

He turned his head the other way, staring down at the floor.

“Nothing”, he said. “He did nothing”.

I was shocked into silence, not knowing what to say to even comfort him.

We sat together in silence until he started to speak.

“I don’t know if Lena has ever told you about her mate”, he said.

I remembered Lena had once confided in me that she already knew who her mate once and that she had met him once before.

So, I nodded.

“If she ever asked me to, I would not hesitate to allow her go to him”, he said. “But she has never. She says she is content to know where he is and that when she is ready, she will go to him”, he paused for a while before speaking again. “But Luke…”, he started and trailed off. “Luke has never asked anything of me”, he shared.

“He has always been my closest friend, right from when we were just pups”, he said, looking far away.

“Do you know what he has always wanted to be?” He asked and I shook my head, even though I knew he did not see. “A good mate”, he finally revealed.

“Not a great warrior or the greatest Beta”, he went on. “Luke just always wanted to be a good mate”, he said, a small smile on his face as though he was remembering a happy memory.

The smile slowly faded from his face.

“And when Gina died, he was more devastated than me”, he said. “Not only because he had just lost his cousin but also because I had lost my mate”, he said. “He would try everything to comfort me and would excuse my nasty behavior towards him because he knew it was from the pain I was feeling. Perhaps that way when I had started doing it, and before long, I had gotten used to doing it”.

I was confused as to what he was talking about.

“Doing what?” I asked, not hiding the confusion I was feeling.

He turned to face me then.

“Pouring my emotions on him”, he said. “Taking them out on him”, he confessed. “Because I knew, that Luke would always excuse my behavior. Because I knew that he would always forgive me”, he said, the sadness in his eyes too deep for mere words to explain.

“Regan”, I could not help but call quietly, feeling the sadness deep into me at his words as though I could feel his emotions.

“And I did it again today”, he went on, looking downwards once more.

“I am sure you did not mean to”, I said in an attempt to console him.

He shook his head. “But I did”, he countered. “I knew his mate was a very sensitive topic for him and do you know what I did?” He asked, rhetorically. “I mocked him for not having one”, he confessed and brought a hand up to run across his face, something I realized was a habit of his.

My heart broke for Luke.

There was no point in chastising Regan. It was clear to see that there was nothing anyone would say to him that would ever be worse than what he was already saying to himself.

Regan was wrong and he knew it.

Wrong to mock his friend. And worse, wrong to attack him.

And acknowledging that one was wrong was always the first step to repentance.

“You owe Luke an apology”, I told him quietly.

He nodded his head. “I know”, he said.

“It is good that you know”, I told him. “But what would be even better is if you did something about it”, I said. “Go, find Luka and ask for his forgiveness. He did not deserve the way you treated him and he deserves to know that you are sorry, and that you regret your actions”, I told him. “So find him, and apologize”, I said.

Before he could respond, the door to our room was slammed open and Lena stormed in.

“Why did you do that to Luke?” She asked furiously, glaring down at him and looking positively livid.

Regan hung his head lower but made no move to respond to the fuming she-wolf. Something I was certain would infuriate her further.

So, I stepped in.

“Lena”, I said, standing from where I sat beside Tegan and moving to make my way over to her to take a gentle hold of her arms.

“Regan was just about leaving to go and find Luke so he can apologize to him”, I told her, giving Regan a pointed look that her thankfully understood.

He slowly stood to his feet and began leaving the room even as Lena answered.

“An apology does not tell me the reason he attacked him like that in the first place”, she said, loosing some steam after she caught the guilt-filled look on Regan’s face. “Have you seen him?” She asked and went on to speak before I could shake my head. “He looks like he was mauled by a creature from the depths of hell”, she said. “Although since it was Rage then I am sure that is what happened”.

I pulled her away from the door as Regan shut it behind him and pulled her towards the bed, pushing her to sit the same way I had done to Regan not too long before.

“Rage is not so bad”, I said in his defense. “He can be the sweetest creature you have ever known”.

She scoffed.

“To you”, she said. “You are his mate after all”, she reminded. “He cannot be a creature from hell with you”, she pointed out.

“Lena please”, I said. “Regan already feels awful for what he did to Luke”.

“Well, he should be”, she said, unsympathetically and I gasped in surprise.

“How can you say that?” I asked her, feeling both taken aback and defensive on behalf of my mate.

She rolled her eyes. “Calm yourself, Dearest”, she said, sounding very much like Nana. “I am not saying it out of spite or simply to be mean”, she explained. “But Regan has a terrible habit of always taking out his emotions on Luke. And Luke has the cowardly habit of always letting Regan get away with it without so much as an apology”, she said. “In a way, it is good that this has happened”, she said. “It would teach both of them a valuable lesson. Regan, to never take his anger or emotions out on Luka again, and Luke, to stop being such a coward all for the sake of being a good friend”.

Reluctantly, I had to admit that she was right.

But something else drew my attention foremost.

“How bad are Luke’s wounds?” I asked, the one question I had been dying to ask Regan but had been unable to bring myself to ask.

Lena sighed hard.

“Nana says she can heal him but there would be a scar”, she said.

I gasped, bringing my hands up to cover my mouth in shock.

“That bad?” I asked, feeling the worry I had been trying to suppress only heighten.

She nodded.

“He almost lost an eye”, she said. “Luckily for him, his grandmother happens to be a half witch and possesses special skills that would save his eye”, she said. “If not, there is nothing we could have done”.

I ran a hand through my hair in concern, standing from the bed and starting to pace around.

“Calm yourself”, Lena said again. “He will be completely fine and have only a small scar to remember the day by”, she said. “I am glad you will not have to see how gruesome it once was”.

“But how could Rage have hurt Luke?” I wondered angrily. “Luke is family”.

Lena simply shrugged a shoulder.

“My guess is whatever they had talked about had something to do with you”, she said. “That is the only reason I can think of for Rage to attack Luke”.

“So I caused this?”

“Certainly not!” She said firmly before I could begin to feel the guilt. “This is simply the outcome of two foolish werewolves needing to lean a lesson”, she said and stood to her feet to take my arm and link it with hers.

“Come now”, she said. “You must eat to help you recover faster”.

“I feel fine, Lena”, I tried to tell her but she would not listen.

“Nonsense”, she simply dismissed.

With that, she pulled me out of the room.

Regan’s POV I wasted no time in going to find Luke. Especially after seeing Lena so angry. Despite the fact that she tried really hard to hide it, I could tell that Jasmine was disappointed with me. I knew that she had grown very fond of Luke since they had started training together. So hearing that I had hurt him, she was bound to be upset. I knew Luke would be wherever Nana was. And Nana was almost always at the healing house. So I headed over there, stilling my muscles in readiness for the scolding that I was sure was coming my way as soon as she caught sight of me. I was right. As soon as Nana saw me, she made her way over to me and fixed me with a glare so intense that I felt my self flinch. “Why would you do that to him?” She asked, her voice strangely calm but I knew she was trying to hold back because of the werewolves around. She did not want to disrespect me, as her Alpha, in front of everyone. “Come with me”, she said when I did not respond and

He didn’t sit with us at our table as he usually did. Instead, he walked in, whispered something into Regan’s ear that made him nod, before serving himself a plate of food and taking the said plate of food to a corner of the hall with no one else. He sat on an empty table by the window and ate, going through some papers as he did so. “If you wish to speak with him”, my mate suddenly said from beside me and I turned my worried gaze from where Luke was seated towards him. “You can go to him”, he said, not looking the slightest bit upset that his mate’s attention was elsewhere. “I am sure he would appreciate your company even if he doesn’t know it”, he said, giving me a nod of approval. I smiled at his words and pushed back my chair to stand to my feet. Then I bent to kiss his cheek b

Regan’s POV The potion Nana made would take about two days to be effective. The one she made for me was to weaken me enough that I would not harm my mate with my strength and the one she made for Jasmine was to make her strong enough to endure the mating ritual. The mating ritual was an important process that we had failed so far to complete. After the mating ceremony, mates were expected to perform the mating rituals which involved the process of mating and being marked right afterwards. After the marking, it was understood that the mates would be completely bonded. That meant that even though Jasmine did not possess a wolf, she would be able to mind link me, though no one else. It would also mean that we would be able to feel each other’s emotions and would have a stronger ability to trace each other’s scents. That was why I wanted the mating ritual to be completed as soon as possible. If we were completely mated, I would be able to tell when she’s in danger and co

Jasmine’s POV It was even better than the last time. If I had thought that the last time I had been with Regan was incredible, then there were certainly no words to describe the act of mating. I had only felt pain for a brief moment when he finally joined us as one, but the very next moment was blissful. I had lost count of how many times I had cried out his name in my release as he took me to heights that were indescribable again and again. When he finally joined me to ascend the heights and we cried out each other’s names, I suddenly started to feel a burning sensation on the side of my neck. “Regan?!” I cried out his name in alarm at the intense sensation of heat, as if the side of my neck was on fire. “What is happening?” I asked, worry making my voice start to tremble. He separated our sweaty bodies as he pushed off me, holding his weight with his elbows on both side of me as he peered down at me in concern. I immediately turned my neck to the side to show it to

Regan’s POV By the time we made it back towards the pack, and out of the woods, Nana was already there waiting for us. I had mind linked her earlier after seeing the silver lines on my mate’s back. I didn’t know what to make of it so I had mind linked Nana to let her know that something strange was happening to Jasmine and that we were on our way to see her. But with Jasmine suddenly shifting for the first time, I had forgotten all about meeting Nana until she had mind linked to ask where we were. I had simply told her that something had happened to Jasmine and to meet us in front of the woods. So, her presence was no surprise to me. Naturally, since Lena was an extension of Nana, I was not surprised to see her waiting alongside Nana as well, especially once she knew anything that pertained or concerned her dearest friend. The person who I was surprised to see however, was Luke. I had not mind linked him and since he was usually busy, I did not expect him to be prese

Jasmine’s POV I woke around Noon the next day feeling very well rested. I immediately caught the scent of my mate and knew it had not been too long since he had left the room. For a moment, I wondered how I could have known that before the memories of the night flooded my mind. I had finally gotten my wolf. I was no longer the werewolf without a wolf. I would no longer be considered weak or unworthy to stand beside my mate as his Luna. Tears gathered in my eyes as I thought of how my parents would react to the news of me finally getting my wolf. I thought to call her but remembered that I had yet to choose a name for her. ‘How do you feel?’ I heard her calm voice in my head and smiled, knowing she had read my mind. ‘Strong’, I told her honestly, a wide smile appearing on my lips. I got off my bed and made my way to my closet to search for clothes and a towel. ‘What are you doing?’ I heard her ask as I made my way towards the door rather than to the washroom.

Regan’s POV After Nana’s revelation about the possibility of my mate being of the Royal bloodline, she had not stopped crying. I could feel her sadness and fear through our mate bond and despite my best efforts, I could not help her feel better. However, I was embarrassed to admit that it seemed that Lena could do what I had failed to. After we had returned to the house, Lena had taken Jasmine up to her room and they had been cooped up there ever since. But through our mate bond, I could feel that whatever Lena was doing to help her feel better was working, because the feeling of fear was muted and amusement and sympathy dominated the new emotions I felt from her. Luke was expected to be back with the old she-wolf by nightfall and I truly hoped that her arrival would bring good news. I worked from the study in our house rather than the one at the pack house, simply needing to be closer to my mate. From time to time I would go up to see if they needed anything and tak

Throughout the meal, I was conscious of the silver eyes that watched me intently from the other end of our table. The only thing that kept me calm was the presence of my mate beside me. Unfortunately, Lena could not be of much help since she had set eyes on her mate. To say I was happy for her would be the understatement of the century. It warmed my heart each time I felt her glance up and see her gaze go straight to where her mate was seated. He in turn could not seem to take his eyes off her and it was obvious to everyone that saw him that he was completely besotted with his mate already, despite not saying even a word to each other. Though his eyes stayed on Lena, he dutifully remained at his mother’s side throughout the meal and afterwards when Nana showed them to the quarters they would be occupying during their visit. Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. Despite her avoidance of Luke and her ignoring of his existence, her cold treatment was never given to Luke’s mate, who she had pulled into a hug and gushed over how beautiful she was the moment Nana had introduced her. Regan’s POV It had been more than ten days since my warriors and I returned from our successful journey. I had received several letters from the Alpha and Luna of Nighthowl pack. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. He readily agreed, if for nothing else but for his mate sake, I suspected. Jasmine’s POV Regan’s return brought a new light to my days. Once they had been welcomed and fed, each warrior returned to their respective homes. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g

Our goodbye was a very casual affair as we both knew each other well enough to know that we did not want to get affectionate or create a scene. So we limited our goodbye to a nod and a brief handshake and patting of shoulders.
