DAHLIA:
This was it. I was going to die in this manner. I closed my eyes and raised the dagger as high as I could.
I waited for the sharp pain that the fangs of the wild rogue would bring, but it didn’t come. I opened my eyes slowly.
That’s when I saw it – a great white wolf that was double my human size! He was clutching the rogue’s neck with his teeth, and his immaculate fur was drenched in blood.
The second rogue fell upon his side, but a swift swipe of his paw hurled him violently away somewhere.
Who was this wolf? Why was he attacking these rogues?
I tried to look closely at him, but I don’t recognize him at all. Was he part of Kaist’s guards? If so, Kaist himself must be around here somewhere…
At that exact instant, my nostril was filled with an extraordinary smell. It was the scent of lemons and the wet woodlands.
I immediately recognized it as the scent of the great, white wolf. But why was I tantalized by his smell?
This has never happened to me before… I had never been interested in the smell of any other male wolves before, not even Kaist’s smell, which was a pleasant mixture of rainwater and ripe apples.
The rogue in his snout quickly fell lifeless into the ground, and I shuddered at the sight. This wolf had really meant to kill these rogues! Who could he possibly be?
The other rogue, upon seeing his comrade dead, tried to flee, but the white wolf did not let him. He hopped into the air and landed right in front of the fleeing wolf, towering over him like a lion over his puny prey.
With just one swipe of his paw, the white wolf dug his claws into the rogue’s heart. I heard the rogue wolf panting, whimpering in fright before he lost his consciousness forever.
The blood in my veins stirred. Once again, the white wolf had killed someone… Truly, he must not be part of Kaist’s army if he could kill so mercilessly like that!
Now that none of the rogues were breathing, he only had one prey left to kill – me.
My whole body trembled violently as he began to approach me. I couldn’t even raise my dagger properly against him, but I heard myself utter some words, probably out of the sheer determination to live.
“Identify yourself! Who are you? Are you a knight of the prince?”
There was no answer. I could only look at the dark violet irises of this wolf. Their mysterious and malevolent glint brought me no comfort.
“Speak,” I said, raising my arms a bit higher. “Who are you? Who sent you here?”
My voice croaked. I don’t sound convincing nor even a bit authoritative at all. I clung at the dagger with both hands now in an attempt to steady myself.
“Don’t come any closer,” I said almost as a whisper. “Don’t come, do you hear me?”
The massive wolf did not listen. He continued to walk towards me.
My heart started to beat even faster that I could almost hear the blood gush into it. I tried to look backwards. I knew that I was one inch away from the ravine… One more move and I will fall down to my death.
The wolf was just several feet away from me now. He seemed hell bent in devouring me!
I locked eyes with him, for that was the only thing left to do. There was nowhere for me to run nor to escape…
The dark violet eyes that stared back at me were monstrous and cruel. I could feel a tremendous amount of hate burning from them, boring a hole into my skull. If the white wolf’s eyes were daggers, I swore I had been dead from those gaze!
There was no need for that though. In a few moments, I would really die either through his bite or by jumping down the cliff.
I gasped when I took a quick peek down the ravine. It was too deep. A mist has already covered what lies beneath it. Perhaps I would already die in fright even before my body could even hit the ground.
When I looked back at the wolf before me, something crazy had happened. The horrendous eyes that looked at me so cruelly before had changed. Why was it looking curiously at me like that? Why has it gone soft and almost sparkly?
I shook my head. I must be seeing things out of fear. However, when I looked back at the white wolf towering over me, I realized that the look in his eyes really did change.
Gone was that trace of evil and malevolence from before. He was looking back at me with round, puppy-like eyes…
I gasped. That wolf was an absolute brute just minutes ago, so why did he turned docile?
He was still coming closer to where I was. My hands shook as I clasped the helm of my dagger, but I lowered it a bit.
Now, he was just an arm’s length away from my face. The scent of citrus and woods enveloped my body. It was so strong that it was threatening to engulf me.
What I did next was beyond my own belief… I let go of the dagger, and instead, I reached out to the soft and immaculate fur before me and stroke it.
The white wolf whimpered as I touched it.
Why did I do that? It seemed as if I was also turning positively crazy!
The wolf came even closer towards me, his massive neck almost inside my whole arms already. He stretched his head towards me, still not breaking away from my gaze. Then, as if it was the most natural thing to do, he opened his snout and licked me on the cheeks.
That was when I heard the sound of an excited wolf yell inside my head.
“Mate!”
Shocked beyond belief, I lost my footing against the edge of the cliff, and I fell helplessly down into the ravine.

TRISTAN:
I heard the sharp scampering of feet across the forest ground, and I knew someone was being chased. I sniffed the air. It was the familiar, alluring scent of that woman.
Following her smell, I ran deeper into the night towards the ravine.
I had heard that the noble lady from the Hurst family had a weakness; apparently, she couldn’t shift at will. I was going to ignore their party when I saw them getting attacked. It was really none of my business. I was just there to verify Gideon’s report.
When I saw the carriage turn upside down and the lady running away from the rogues in her human form, however, I knew I couldn’t stand idly by. I channeled Albus’ form and ran towards her.
If I were in my human form, I would have already scratched my head in astonishment. It seemed like this noble lady didn’t know the signs of danger. She seemed oblivious to the fact that she was running into far more dangerous terrain as she trudged wildly into the woods.
Instead of the valley, she was going straight into the ravine.
I wanted to warn her, but bit my tongue to stop myself from growling. She didn’t know me, so she would be naturally frightened, and growling would give away my presence to her enemies. If I were to help her, I should do it well and not get caught prematurely.
At last, she had reached the edge of a steep ravine. The uncouth rogues taunted her, but she has got spirit. She climbed to the top and held a dagger towards them, unwilling to surrender herself despite the looming danger against her life.
I couldn’t stand it any longer. I attacked the first rogue who dared to touch her!
I sank my teeth into his putrid body, and I snarled as the other one tried to attack my side. I easily swung it away with my paw. He was a puny wolf compared to those I had faced.
It only took me just a few seconds to wipe away those two punks. After I had finished, I turned my attention towards the lady in the ravine.
As soon as I turned my eyes on her, a lovely smell filled my senses. It was the smell of milk and cherries.
I didn’t even know such a lovely combination of smells existed. It was also the first time in my life that a smell had completely overwhelmed me that even my heart started to mellow down.
Gideon was right. Lady Dahlia Hurst was a breathtaking beauty. He had warned me beforehand of her charm, and I had been observing her safely from afar these past few weeks, but no one prepared me for the magnitude of her loveliness from up close.
It was like looking at a picturesque view that night. She was standing there with the moon in the background, her brown curls blowing astray in the wind. Her eyes looked as if she was deathly frightened of me, but they were too mesmerizing for me to look away from.
She held a dagger in her trembling hands. She mumbled several words, but I was too focused on her lovely face that I failed to comprehend what she was saying.
She looked so frail. I only wanted to caress her and assure her that it will be alright... I felt like if the whole world was making her cry, I would burn it alive and everything else in it. She looked like a delicate, delicate thing…
I was not a person that was good at words though. All I could do at that time was to look at her in awe and walk towards her.
I wanted to hold her hand and rest my head on her shoulders.
That was a very surprising notion. What was happening to me? Why am I having these damned thoughts? It felt like I was helplessly losing my mind!
Perhaps, she was thinking the same thing too. She had stopped trembling and started to look at me in amazement, her eyes twinkling in wonder.
What was this fuzzy feeling inside my chest? Why was I so drawn into her like this?
The dagger she previously held against me had slipped into the ground. I continued to walk towards her now open hands.
Why was she opening her arms towards me? Did she really want to embrace me like this?
It doesn’t matter what her intentions were. I wanted to embrace her. I walked into her arms and felt her skin against my fur.
When I saw her for the first time afar, my wolves had already jumped in glee. They went wild when they realized who she was.
Now, as I stand here closer to her, my wolf was screaming yet again on the recognition of what this she-wolf meant to me.
“Mate,” Albus whimpered excitedly in our head. “My mate!”
That was the last sane thought I had, for in the blink of an eye, she slipped, falling downward into that blasted cliff.
I didn’t think twice. I jumped with her, hovering just above her falling body. I reached out my paws against her arms and held tightly onto her as we descended down into the unknown.
DAHLIA:I woke up to the smell of burning firewood and into the arms of someone clutching me so tightly inside a cave.I yelped in alarm. For a few seconds, I had forgotten what had happened. I didn’t know where I was or how I got there.“W-What?…”“I see you’ve woken up.”It was a man who was holding me close. I tried to look back at him, but he held me even tighter that I cannot seem to breathe.“Who… Who are you?”He didn’t have to answer me at all. At that exact moment, I remembered clutching a furry body as I fell down the cliff towards my death…“Don’t squirm so hard, my lady… Otherwise, you’d get my body too damn excited.”As soon as he said this, my body immediately stiffened. I felt every inch of my face turning red. Even the hairs at the back of my neck stood up when I realized that he was breathing right n
DAHLIA:“Do you really want to go home, Dahlia?...”My insides were turning wild. Why was he saying my name with such a sultry voice?“I… I… I think I have to go… now…”I finally said it. I looked away from his mesmerizing eyes and beautifully naked body and forced myself to look at the flickering flames at my side.“Let’s go now. Please take me back home.”It was taking every inch of me to resist him. If I looked back in his eyes, I fear I really won’t have the strength to refuse.“As you wish,” he replied, cold now. He swiftly transformed into a great white wolf. He growled at me.“Get on top. I’ll take you back.”After I have extinguished the fire with the bucket he had prepared beforehand, I nervously climbed to the white wolf’s back and clung into his fur.“Please be caref-!”I ha
DAHLIA: “Lady Dahlia, are you sure you’re alright?” “Umm, yeah… yes…” It was not true. My head and heart were in a daze. Ever since the white wolf had left, it felt like my heart was in excruciating pain that I cannot speak. Were all fated mate partings like this? ‘Of course, what were you thinking,’ Eve said. After speaking her first words to me earlier, she found the power of her speech so amusing that all she could do now was talk. ‘Fated mates are destined by the Moon Goddess herself. Once a wolf finds his or her fated mate, he or she becomes complete. What do you think will happen once you separate again? It’s like splitting your soul in half!’ It felt exactly like that - like my heart was splitting itself into pieces, crushing my whole being. I wanted to cry and whimper, but I could not. I was still a long way from home… It was already morning time. After finding me, Sir Raleigh, Rick, Lina, and I stopped by an inn in the next vi
DAHLIA:“Of course, Dahlia… You won’t expect me to really do that, did you? We’re not even sure you’ve found your real mate yet. What if he turned out to be some hoax?”Both Kaist and I are of the same age – nineteen years old - and we both haven’t found each other’s mate yet until today. It was during our younger years when Kaist had this ridiculous idea one day.“Dahlia, if we haven’t found our mate yet when we turn seventeen, will you just marry me?”Seventeen was the usual age of fated mate awakening for werewolves like us. We were both fifteen at that time. I remembered laughing hysterically when Kaist said this to me.“Why are you laughing that hard? Did I say something funny?”“Oh, I thought you were joking, Prince Kaist,” I said as I wiped a tear away from my eyes.“So, how about it? I don’t like to marry anyone I
DAHLIA:I didn’t know what Kaist said to my father that day when papa ordered me to sleep, but it must not be good, at least for me.As expected, Kaist’s effort to find Tristan bore no fruits. The engagement party proceeded as planned.Three days went by very quickly. I rarely slept at night time. I cried my eyes out whenever I had an opportunity to be alone.“Lady Dahlia, you don’t look good,” Lina said, frowning immensely at my thinning wrist. “Your eyes are so sallow, and you look so pale. Did you not sleep again last night?”I had no energy to talk to Lina. She continued to brush my hair in front of the mirror, preparing me for the beautification needed for the day.Everyday was the same since the day I met Tristan. There was a gaping hole inside my heart, and I felt like I was in excruciating pain just thinking that I will be wed soon to someone else.Worse, I had no way of finding him, b
DAHLIA:Lina and the other servants were preoccupied for hours, dressing me, preparing me, making me beautiful enough to be served in a platter later in front of the noble houses of Talandor…Everything made me sick - the lights, the sounds, the dresses, and most especially the compliments that made my heart sink further and further down into the bottom of despair.“Lady Dahlia, you look truly beautiful! Congratulations,” the other attendants said in awe. They were sincere compliments, but I didn’t care. Neither Lina nor I spoke a single word while they bustled around to make me pretty for the party. After several hours of letting them do their best work on me, I was finally allowed to look at myself in the mirror for the first time.Indeed, I looked lovely in a royal blue party dress. My hair was curled up, and it was adorned with crystal and sapphire stones, but my eyes looked quite empty. It was taking all
DAHLIA:There was an indescribable feeling inside of my chest. It felt like someone was looking at me deeply in a curious manner.I looked around and scanned the crowd. All eyes were on us. To be precise, all eyes were on the king and on Kaist, who was sitting to my right. No one was looking at me in particular, and yet the feeling that someone’s eyes were concentrated on me still persisted. What could this possibly mean?“Our mate,” Eva whispered to me. “I think he’s here… I can feel him.”My face colored up. Was Tristan really here, amongst the crowd? Was he here as one of the guests? That can’t be… Papa won’t make a mistake. Even Sir Raleigh had been posted as one of the guards by the gate because he was insistent in catching my mate at the very beginning. He won’t make a lapse in judgment like so…Well, that can’t happen unless he came here in a disguise&hel
DAHLIA:Before I could even speak, he scolded me harshly, “What the hell were you doing there? Did you really plan to die like that?!”I can’t believe it! Tristan was here right in front of me!I tried to say something to him, but my body was wracked in violent fits of coughs. He propped me into a sitting position and massaged my back, soothing me. I felt a tremendous amount of relief that I wanted to cry.“H-how,” I managed to finally ask him when I had gotten over my coughs.“I heard you say goodbye… I heard you say goodbye in my head just now,” he said abruptly.I can’t believe it! I was able to talk to him in my head even without trying to mind-link with him! Was that even possible? His face wore a surprised and worried look too. Perhaps he had the same questions as the ones in my mind right now…“How can I… How can I talk to you like that? Does it m
Hello! Thank you so much for coming to this journey with me in Revenge of The Shadow Heir! I started this story with a completely different story arc in mind, and I can't believe I've already reached the end of Dahlia and Tristan's love story. I dedicate this novel to the person who inspired me to take on writing again (and write romance stories, which wasn't really the genre I honestly saw myself writing). Here's to more meaningful memories together, sweetie! :). And to all those who have ever dreamed of being a writer or of being anything else - chase that dream! You were made to lust after it for a purpose. Glory to God always! I might take some hiatus after this story, but I assure you this won't be the last I will write. Thanks a lot again, dearests, and happy reading! - Ellie Love -
DAHLIA:“Dahlia, I have confessed everything to you before. I don’t know how much you remember of it after your accident though, so I am sorry for hurting you again,” Tristan began.“It was true. I casted a spell that was why the mate mark appeared in your body after our first night together. I was sure you were not my mate, and I was not yours. I casted a different spell on myself a few years ago to suppress finding my own mate, so I was confident when I approached you.”“However, the more I stayed beside you, the surer I had become that you were my destined mate… There wasn’t any day that I didn’t regret doing that…”Tears flowed from both our eyes. I knew it from my memory. We did have this conversation before, but it was still heartbreaking to hear Tristan’s side of the story.“When you had switched appearances with Samalah, I was foolish enough not to recognize you
DAHLIA: I was in a dark and suffocating place that I can’t even see my own hands and feet. I tried standing still, but nothing was happening, so I decided to move around. I started calling to my wolf. ‘Eva!’ Again, I shouted, ‘Eva!’ There was no answer. I was running wildly, or at least I thought I was. No one can say that this was all happening in my head. Goddess, I couldn’t even see if my body was still intact! I tried to touch my cheek just so I could verify I am still alive, still seeing, still feeling. The last thing I could honestly remember was King Helion Cosco drinking the blood off my neck. I felt around my neck. There weren’t any wounds of any form of punctures. Am I still existing in the real world, or is this all just a dying person’s dream? Just then, I heard an anguished voice. “Dahlia!” It was the voice I had longed to hear for a long time. “Tristan!” I started ru
TRISTAN: Irvan, that scoundrel that caused Samalah to get into an accident and had caused Dahlia’s agony, was a conjurer! Perhaps that was why they had left the dead bodies here instead of burying or burning them. It wasn’t just for show after all. The animated bodies started to close in on us. I thought it would be easy to defeat them since they were dead. However, they have the faces of people whome we had once seen or knew… It was a bit fortunate that most of them were just people whom I have casually met at Talandor, but I could only imagine that this battle must be too hard for Kaist. As we tried to knock out the dead bodies, the dragon bones swoop down on us, trying to pick on the flesh on our back. Even without a rider, the dragon bones were agile. This was really a dangerous thing. I just finished hurling a corpse somewhere far away, when suddenly, I looked up to see a dragon bone aiming to pluck my eyes away. I
TRISTAN: I galloped towards the edge of the plain leading to the Great Temple where I could smell my Dahlia’s scent. In the past, I had loved this walk from the forest towards the temple where my father would regularly burn an offering to the Moon Goddess Selene. Now, this same path was packed with vampires, attacking me from left and right. It was a hard fight. I felt like I was a bug trying to battle out hordes of ants to get to the other side. The more I stayed here, the more endangered Dahlia could become. Suddenly, I heard a voice roar. “Get down!” My instincts kicked in, and I followed it. As soon as I ducked down, bolts of fire started to rain down on my path, burning the Blasted Ones that crowded my way. I looked back sharply to discover a non-familiar wolf. It was golden brown with a stone in its head that shone like the midday sun. So this was how Kaist’s Shadow Rune wolf looked like. He must have already acce
DAHLIA: I rested my hope that if Count Jeteris himself or the people from Talandor could see me, they’d try to help me out. After all, I was someone they knew, someone who interacted with them, and someone they had sworn to protect as knights of Talandor. Surely, they wouldn’t let anyone from the Vampire Clan kill a she-wolf they had once known... But all those hopes were crushed when I saw what awaited us at the temple. The outer courts of the temple were nothing but mere rubbles of stones and sands now, but one could still gain the impression that it was a grand structure once. I had seen the tumbled-down appearance of the temple in a distance as King Helion dragged me to it, but as we entered its vicinity, I was shocked beyond belief. All around, corpses of werewolves lay lifelessly on the ground. “W-What did you do,” I asked in horror. “The foolish count wanted my help, but he didn’t agree with taking you as my queen, so…”
TRISTAN: “Brother, look out!” I swerved to the right by mistake, which ended up being good as I had dodged a blow against my skull. Livia and I had been fighting against the Blasted Ones for hours now, but they do not seem to be depleting. How in the world can the Apricus King call in this many of his men? Worse of all, Livia’s state was getting worse and worse as time went by… I hate to admit it, but I don’t think I could last fighting against them for a long time too. I struggled to get on my feet, thinking of how wretched I was to have sent the one person I loved the most towards her death. Memories of when I first saw Dahlia flashed by my head as I attacked one vampire after another. Lady Dahlia Hurst – the gentle rose of the kingdom – the person people looked up to and envied… My first thought was that such a person would be nothing more than a spoiled brat. She had been under the spotlight since she was yo
KAIST:It was a call to help Count Abell. Wolves from the White Fang Pack immediately tore their shirts and started transforming into their wolf form.“Prince Kaist, do you mean to say Tristan and Samalah… I mean Dahlia are in danger,” Thesla hurriedly asked.I nodded. “Yes. We will be going now. Get the women, children, elderly, and the sick inside the town hall. Bar the doors, and don’t let anyone inside the village. I will return here for the lady when everything is over,” I told the villagers. There was a murmur around the villagers.“Prince Kaist, I couldn’t speak for everyone, but I will come with you. Dahlia has become a friend and a family to Efiro and I. I don’t want to just sit and do nothing when I know she’s in danger!”“Very well.” I turned to the crowd. “Everyone who wishes to join us may come. As for the rest of you, please secure the village.
TRISTAN: “No, take her back! Give Dahlia back to us,” I shouted. The vampires around us poised themselves for an attack and smiled. They could sense the blood palpitating in my veins as I tensed up. They were getting excited on the prospect of violence as their true nature dictates. “Finders keepers” was all I heard from the damned king of the vampires. Maybe this was all a lie. Maybe the king of the Blasted Ones was toying with my sanity… How did I end up in this? Why did I give Dahlia to them? It felt like I was in a sort of reverie. Everything felt hazy. It was as if things were coming at me in slow motion. I could only watch as Dahlia’s golden brown hair billowed in the wind. King Helion towered over her. He clutched her by the wrist, and when she refused to tear her eyes away from me, he grappled at her shoulders and took her away more forcefully, twisting her face away from mine. I could only watch as trails of te
