Chapter 2

Penulis: Ethereal Realm
Tears started streaming down Zoey’s face, and as if on cue, Aaron immediately puffed up his chest, his voice ringing loud and clear.

“She just couldn’t handle her skis! Clearly, she’s not good enough to compete in the first place, and now she’s injured you!

“Scarlett, you owe Zoey an apology right now. And to show you mean it, you need to withdraw from the race!”

It hit me like a punch to the gut. Zoey was willing to endure her injuries just to make me drop out.

Everyone knew my skills on the slopes were unmatched. Winning this race would guarantee me a spot in the elite overseas club’s training program.

Lily let out a sharp laugh, clearly furious at Aaron’s audacity.

I quickly stopped her from launching into a tirade, keeping my voice icy as I faced Aaron.

“Are you blind? Didn’t you see my skis were sabotaged? The referee saw it and so did the audience.

“But you… Instead of rushing Zoey to the hospital, you’re more focused on getting me to withdraw. Feeling guilty, are we? Did you two mess with my skis? And now that your plan’s failed, you’re trying to force me out another way?”

On the stretcher, Zoey’s face twisted for just a second at my words.

Aaron stammered, spitting out weak accusations of me overthinking.

Then I saw Coach Tucker jogging toward us, giving me a subtle nod.

“Referee!” I called out. “I suspect foul play. I’m requesting an immediate review of the security footage!”

The referee looked hesitant. With the race underway, investigating mid-event wasn’t the norm.

Zoey’s eyes reddened as she spoke, her voice quivering with pity, “Scarlett, I only wanted you to say you’re sorry. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?

“The race isn’t even over yet. You can’t just stop everything to check some silly footage. It’s okay, though. I know you think I’m stupid and unworthy of an apology…”

I let out a cold laugh, cutting her off mid-performance.

“You seem to know a lot about the rules. Pray tell, why were you standing so close to the course then? If you hadn’t been, the skis wouldn’t have hit you so easily.

“And instead of going straight to the hospital, you came here. Care to explain what you’re really after?”

Tears welled up in Zoey’s eyes, and her hands fidgeted nervously. Obviously, she wasn’t expecting me to fight back.

“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault for being so stupid. I’m sorry…”

Aaron stepped in, dabbing at her tears with concern. “Don’t cry, babe. Some people are just nasty to the core. They can’t stand to see others happy.”

He turned back to me, his tone hard and final. “Apologize and drop out of the race, or we’re done. I’m not staying with someone so cold-hearted.”

Lily stared at me, her expression one of utter disbelief. Her eyes seemed to ask 'This is your boyfriend?'.

I felt a pang of humiliation but swallowed it down. This wasn’t the time to get into that.

Instead, I insisted on checking the surveillance footage immediately and filing a report with the authorities.

Seeing I was stubborn, Zoey’s composure slipped, panic flickering across her face. She exchanged nervous glances with Aaron, as if silently asking if the evidence had already been erased.

Aaron scoffed, tossing out a final barb as he stormed off.

“Fine. We’ll be the bigger people here. But after the race, you’d better show up at the hospital and apologize properly.”

With that, he directed the medics to carry Zoey away.

The referee sighed, clearly relieved the commotion was over, and motioned for us to get ready so the race could resume.

Coach Tucker took the chance to sidle up beside me, leaning in to whisper, “The footage shows Zoey taking your skis into the locker room. There’s a blind spot there, so we can’t see exactly what she did. But we can tell she switched the skis with someone else before bringing them back.”

The referee’s whistle blew, signaling for Coach Tucker to step off the course.

I fixed my gaze on the direction Zoey had been taken and reached out to pull my coach back. As I tried to lift it, I realized I couldn’t, my shoulder throbbing painfully from where Aaron had struck me earlier.

With a heavy heart, I withdrew from the race, the disappointment in the crowd’s murmurs cutting deep.

Coach Tucker was livid, insisting we report everything immediately and head to the hospital for my injuries. However, I stopped his caring and asked him to accompany me somewhere else first.

We headed to the security office. Sure enough, as we approached, I heard Zoey’s voice inside, dripping with exaggerated sweetness.

“Come on, sir. Just let me take a little peek, won’t you?”

The guard was firm in his refusal, his tone cold and professional.

I pushed the door open, holding up my phone with a video playing on the screen.

“Looking for this?”

Aaron squinted at my phone screen for a moment before instinctively reaching for it. Coach Tucker stepped in and blocked him. Zoey, her expression tinged with curiosity, asked, “What are you doing here? Is the race over already?” I kept my tone even as I answered, “I withdrew.” Her eyes lit up with unmistakable joy before quickly masking it with feigned sympathy. “Oh, don’t feel bad. Sometimes quitting isn’t the worst thing. Honestly, Scarlett, I never thought you were cut out for this kind of competition. Look at everyone else—no issues with their skis. But yours? It’s like the universe is trying to tell you something.” Coach Tucker’s face turned a dangerous shade of red, with veins even bulging. If she weren’t a girl, I’m sure he’d have thrown a punch already. I snorted. I had no intention of tolerating her any longer and slapped her hard across the face. “You’ve got some nerve. Don’t pretend you don’t know what happened to my skis. Or should I call the police to

I suddenly realized that the competition committee likely shared the same opinion as Zoey. She was probably trying to secure a place in Aaron’s privileged world. Last year, she dismissed Aaron, saying I had poor taste. This year, though? She was glued to his side, showering him with attention. I had been so focused on skiing—training, reviewing, and repeating the cycle every day. It was also my first relationship, and I lacked the experience to see the red flags. I had brushed off Aaron’s indifference as normal, thinking it was just part of dating. I wanted to explain all this to Coach Tucker, to reassure him not to worry too much. However, before I could, we found ourselves at Mr. Brown’s office door. Out of courtesy, we knocked before entering, only to be met with Mr. Brown’s stormy expression.

The moment we stepped inside, Mr. Brown immediately tore into Coach Tucker. “Who gave you permission to access the security footage? Do you realize that’s a breach of protocol? “And you, as a coach, laying hands on an athlete? This isn’t some lawless jungle! If they press charges, you could go to jail! You’re disgracing the sport. Apologize, now!” Remaining calm, I pulled out my phone and played the surveillance footage we’d copied earlier. “Speaking of law and order, Zoey deliberately sabotaged my skis, nearly causing me serious harm. That’s intentional injury. Mr. Brown, how does the committee plan to handle this?” Mr. Brown hadn’t expected such a direct challenge. His face turned an ashen gray. Aaron jabbed a finger at me, yelling, “You’re trying to pick a fight! Do you even want to stay in this competition? “I already said I told Zoey to swap the skis. And wasn’t it you who asked me to handle it in the first place?”I sneered. “Even if I did ask you to switch t

Mr. Brown, Aaron, and Zoey burst into laughter the moment I finished speaking. Their laughter was full of mockery, as if saying, “You? Turn the tables?”I didn’t respond. Silently, I counted down the minutes, waiting for the police to arrive. However, someone else showed up before the cops did. It was Mr. Maville, the head of R&D at Snowpeak Group. As soon as Mr. Maville knocked and entered the room, Mr. Brown nearly jumped out of his chair. “Apologies for interrupting,” Mr. Maville said politely, though his steps were anything but courteous as he strode inside. Aaron, one of the lead contributors to the research project, had met Mr. Maville before. He knew his current status depended entirely on Mr. Maville’s goodwill. So, naturally, he plastered a smile on his face and hurried to greet him. However, Mr. Maville didn’t even spare Aaron a glance. He walked right past him and sat down. Mr. Maville’s sharp eyes quickly caught sight of the phone submerged in the fish tank. I raised an eyebrow and turned to the pitiful-looking Zoey, who stood nearby.“Pay up. That phone cost me twenty thousand.” Zoey gasped audibly, dropping her doe-eyed act in an instant. She screeched, “Are you insane? What kind of crappy phone is worth twenty grand? You’re extorting me!” Still, she didn’t forget to glance over at Mr. Brown and Mr. Maville, her eyes glistening with crocodile tears, trying to sell the image of a fragile victim suffering an injustice. Unfortunately for her, that act didn’t work on Mr. Maville. He’d seen his fair share of manipulative theatrics. “Crappy phone?” Mr. Maville said, “If I’m not mistaken, that’s the latest custom-model smartphone, isn’t it? Quite the discerning taste, Miss Zoey. Or are you suggesting that only phones worth hundreds of thousands of dollars are up to your standards?” I chuckled, throwing Zoey a mocking glance. She stiffene

On a skiing forum, I noticed a post accusing Zoey of being a home wrecker. The post was deleted almost immediately, but I caught a glimpse of it while scrolling during a break. Speak of the devil, Zoey, strutted into the training facility like she owned the place, tossing a wad of cash onto the table in front of me. I simply raised an eyebrow, saying nothing. She sneered. “That phone. You didn’t buy it yourself, right? Someone gave it to you?” When I nodded, Zoey visibly relaxed. She sat down, leaning back in her chair. “I knew it. With how hard you work, there’s no way someone like you could be from a wealthy family. “You didn’t even win your last competition, and now your chances of going abroad are slim to none. Why don’t you just give me your spot instead?“Better yet, introduce me to the sugar daddy funding you. Once I finish my studies abroad, I’ll be sure to repay the favor.” I gave her a look that screamed, “Are you serious?” Without a word, I pocketed th

In the days leading up to the meeting, Zoey had clearly gone out of her way to dig up everything she could about the preferences of the heiress from the Snowpeak Group. For once, my phone was blessedly quiet. That said, Zoey’s jealousy seemed to hit new levels. Every little thing set her off. Whenever she had an outburst, she’d hunt me down to throw some cutting remarks my way or flaunt whatever trivial success she could muster. At this point, even treating her like a digital pet was starting to feel tiresome. Finally, the day of the meeting arrived. I deliberately kept my outfit simple and casual, taking my time as I strolled over from the athletes’ dorm to the meeting venue. No one even noticed me when I walked in. I made my way straight to the guest seat and sat down. A few colleagues from the ski club recognized me and came over to kindly remind me that the seat was reserved. So, I nodded lightly and told them I was the one Zoey was supposed to interview today.

Zoey completely lost it. With a loud crash, she slammed the microphone to the floor and lunged at me, hands wrapping around my throat. “Why?! Why are you the heiress of Snowpeak Group? Why are you better than me at everything?“You should’ve been some sugar baby kept by a rich man! There’s no way this is real. It has to be a mistake!” The room descended into chaos. Someone shouted for security. Mr. Maville and a few others rushed to pull Zoey off me. Just then, a middle-aged woman armed with a mop quietly approached the scene. Meanwhile, I was quickly helped off stage, trying to stay as far from the madness as possible. Suddenly, she rushed forward and swung the mop, striking Zoey squarely on the shoulder. “You shameless home wrecker! You seduced my husband! I’ll kill you!” The mop, clearly borrowed from the janitorial staff, was dripping with some grimy, foul-smelling liquid. A staff member tried to intervene, but someone quietly held them back and mutter
