Adonis followed the direction of Cara's gaze to see Luca looking like a dear that had been caught in sheer light. He glared at him.
"I don't know. Why don't you tell us, Luca?" Luca smiled sheepishly, looking between them. "Sorry. It's just weird seeing a strange person here. Especially when the outsider's a lady invited by Adonis himself." Cara scoffed. "Well, it's reassuring to know that he doesn't naturally surround himself with women. It'll make this more believable. I'm guessing you know our arrangement, Mr.? "Luca. Just Luca." "Okay, Luca. I'm Cara. I already said that before, right?" "Yeah. I'm Luca Romano. This dufus best and only friend." He replied with a face-splitting grin, extending his hand towards Adonis, who was still sitting silently with his arm crossed over his chest. "He has a friend? What a wonder!" "I know. I'm just a lovable person." Luca replied, earning a small smile from Cara. At first, she thought he'd be arrogant and annoying, just like Adonis, but she found that she felt more comfortable around him. He had this playful nature that could get anyone to ease up in seconds. "If you're both done with the introduction, we'll need to discuss some rules." Adonis's deep baritone voice interrupted, and the smile instantly fell from Cara's face. "What?" "This arrangement mustn't be discussed with anyone. No one, I mean no one, must know about the contract." "Why? Luca knows," Cara protested. "That was a mistake on my part." Luca almost gave himself a whiplash. "Excuse me?" "Shut it, Luca. As I said, that was a mistake on my part. No one else should know." Cara considered it for a moment. "What if my friend comes to visit? She'd be suspicious if I don't tell her about the wedding, then invite her over only to see you." Adonis rubbed at his nape in deep thought. After a while, he nodded. "Okay. You can tell her, but not about what we do. The less she knows, the safer she'll be. You'd have to give me her name, though. My men have to run a background check on her and go through some protocols before she's allowed on the estate. Do you have any family? Anyone you'd like to invite to the wedding? Cara shook her head. "Not that I know of." Adonis hummed. "Okay. I'd set a meeting with my grandfather for the day after tomorrow. That will give us enough time to get our story straight and get into the act. If all goes well, we'll be married in a week. You'll get a tour of the house tomorrow since it's late, and if you need anything else, let the maids know. They come in at 6 am every day. " "What about my home? If I stay here with you, who would look after it?" "That would not be an issue. I'll have the maids manage it twice every week. Hold on." He stood and walked over to the big screen installed on the wall. Cara couldn't see what exactly he was doing as his frame obstructed her view. All she heard were a few clicks and then an automated voice. 'Open.' She looked over to Luca, curiosity written all over her face, but he shrugged in reply. Three minutes later, she heard the same clicks, and Adonis turned back to walk towards them. This time, he had a small black bag, which he dropped on the table before taking a seat. "That's for you. Sixty grand. Pay off your debts." He announced. Cara's eyes widened; she gaped at Adonis, then at Luca, who again shrugged. Did he just bring out the money from plain sight? Who the hell has sixty grand lying around? She gulped, pinning the bag down with a pointed stare. "I can wire it if you want," Adonis offered. "No. This is fine... but the five extra grand?" "Keep it!" He rose to his feet. "I have some work to do, so I'll be retiring for now. The guest room is up the stairs. First one to your right." And with a subtle glance at Luca, he exited the room. Luca waited a while until Adonis was out of earshot. "So..." he drew out, "I know Adonis might be a little closed off, but he's not as difficult as you think. He's just had to deal with a lot of sh*t, and that has made him weary about people." Cara rolled her eyes in reply. Everyone had been through one thing or the other. It wasn't an avenue to go around being condescending and arrogant. She waved him off. "He should've been honest from the start. Look, I know you guys were brought up and are used to living dangerously-no offence-but not me. I've been through a lot too. I've been living a shitty life for the past four years, and the one thing that was supposed to be my ticket to salvation becomes the reason it crumbles entirely. I lost my father!" She berated, her voice becoming angrier with each sentence. She had tried so hard to suppress her emotions. Anger, hurt, pain, regret, anger-she couldn't point out exactly how she felt but her anger was the main fuel. And now he was here trying to give reasons for his friend's betrayal. "I know you lost your father, and I'm sorry about that." "You shouldn't be. It wasn't your fault. The things you're saying to me should be said by Mr. Bernardi, not you. All I see is you trying to defend his actions, and to me, no excuse is acceptable. My father is dead, and nothing is going to bring him back." She blatantly stated. "Look, Cara, I am not trying to defend him. I just want you to know that there's more to him. I know this is just a contract for you both, but you'll be the first person Adonis would ever commit to. I want you guys to work out for real, but the truth remains that we live in a dangerous world-as you said. To live in our world, you'll need to trust him and trust that he'll do anything to keep you safe." "That's kind of hard to believe in my situation, don't you think? Honestly, Luca, I don't care. I don't care about your mafia or your world or anything. I'm just here for the money, and that's all. Sorry, but to me, Mr. Bernardi shouldn't be wished on even the worst person alive." Luca sighed in resignation. He sincerely wished for Cara and Adonis to make this real. Unlike Adonis, he had no issues with love and had always bugged him to give it a chance. He looked over to Cara, who was sitting with a resolved frown on her face. There was nothing he could say to convince her. He'd just have to let them work things out by themselves. Rising to his feet, he spoke one last time. "All I'm asking is that you get to know him. Adonis would go to hell for anything he holds dear. I'm going to go now. See you tomorrow." Cara watched Luca climb up the same steps Adonis did, her eyes following each receding step until she could see him no more. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling all alone in the lofty, elegant room. It would've been the least comforting if that was only literally true, but practically, it was also correct. A choked sob escaped her lips. Her shoulder slumped as though it'd reached its limit and couldn't carry anymore of the baggage she'd be dragging around all day. They all crumbled and her shoulders began to quiver, her lips wobbling as tears began to flow from her eyes. Cara wept- For her father, for her heartbroken self, that she couldn't have been born into a better life, that things might have been different if her mother was alive, for the fear she felt. She repeatedly slammed her fist on her chest hoping it would ease the pain she felt, but it didn't make her feel better. That's what tears were for-letting out the pain to recharge for the inevitable that was to come. Maybe she saw the silhouette of a particular six-foot-three mafia heir, watching from behind the staircase. Maybe she didn't. But she cried until she had no tears left and then. She went up to cry some more.It wasn't until noon of the next day that Cara was woken by the urge to pee. Still sleepy, she rolled out of bed with a big yawn, her hair a fizzled mess as she blindly located the restroom. She forcefully plopped one eye open as she did her business, staring at the transparent bath cubicle in the combined bathroom.Cara sat upright. All traces of sleep vanished from her eyes. Transparent bath cubicle? In her home? She hurriedly finished her business and dashed out of the restroom. She had almost pulled open the door of the room when memories of the previous day came flooding into her mind. The lightness she felt disappeared and was replaced with the gloomy feeling from the day before. She turned back towards the queen-sized bed and caught sight of some clothes laid out by the side.A black pair of sweats and a new set of underwear in her size were kept neatly, and by the side, a new toothbrush. She felt exposed at the fact that someone came in while she was asleep and mentally rem
Cara trailed behind Adonis as he pulled open one of the closed doors, a frustrated pout on her lips."I would not lie and say I've not thought about it, but is it really necessary?""Yes.""Why? No one would notice anyway." "Yes, they would. The mansion is like a chill house for the guys. Luca stayed over yesterday and he does that whenever we have pending work or his girlfriend is out of town. Moreover, the other guys would be suspicious if we claimed to be married but are staying in separate rooms.""Luca has a girlfriend?" Cara asked incredulously."Yes. Been engaged for over a year now." "Oh. Wow."No wonder he sounded like a sap the night before. She peeked at Adonis, a calculating look on her face. How exactly were they friends when they were totally different? A small ding echoed and she watched Adonis pull out his phone from his back pocket, scrolling through it. He looked up when she refused to go into the room."Are you coming in or what?""Coming coming." A gasp escape
"What do you mean your grandfather just landed on the estate?" Cara shrieked."Landed as in jet, airplane," Adonis stated with a stoic expression. "You don't know what it means to land a plane?" Cara grounded her teeth together, trying to maintain her cool."I don't mean that! I know what a plane is, thank you very much. You said I wouldn't meet him until the day after tomorrow.""I thought so too." He yanked the black shirt he had on over his head. "I thought so too, but he's here now, so get your act together and be ready to meet him." "What am I going to say? I know nothing about you. What if he doesn't believe me?" Her gaze followed his hand to the waist of his sweatpants."And what the hell are you doing?" She cried out quickly, averting her gaze."Changing as you should. Nonno is a very weird person, and he's all about first impressions. Wear something pretty. Not too flashy but elegant." "How can I change with you in the room?" She asked, still looking away from him, her eye
Cara's POVRemember when I said no luxury in this mansion could blow my mind away?I lied. The first thing that came to my mind the moment we walked into what looked to be Adonis's study was, 'what the actual fudge?'This wasn't a study; it was a freaking intelligence room. I wouldn't even be able to tell that it was supposed to be a study if it wasn't for the in-built wall library that held over a thousand books-I am definitely sure about that, and the big black mahogany desk and chair that was placed a bit further from it. On the desk was a big globe that had a map of the world. Even if I tried, there was no way I could ignore the five computerised screens neatly arranged on what looked to be a little conference table. They were of different models and styles and spread out around them were different gadgets, of which I did not even know their names. Was Adonis a secret spy or what? I thought things like this were only reserved for movies. One glance around the room, and I could
Cara's POVAdonis's grandfather released a deep questioning rumble."He's not?"With a glance at Adonis, I confirmed."He's not. But among everyone that I've ever been with, he's the only one I'd like to spend the rest of my life with. He might be strong-headed, stubborn, and adamant, but he wants the best for me. That is enough for me." I shuffled closer to Adonis, resting my head on his arm in hopes that his grandfather bought my story. It wasn't all lies; Adonis was really those things, and he does want the best for me, even if it might be because he wants the best for himself.Adonis's grandfather silently studied me for a minute. I felt Adonis pull me closer till I was practically sitting on his lap and his grandfather's already raised brow went higher. My face tingled with a warm feeling, blushing a bright pink. "Stop shuffling about; be bold!" I felt him breathe down my ear.Turning to meet his gaze, he nodded in encouragement. That was the push I needed for the nervous feeli
Dimitri spent over an hour listening to Cara's lies before he decided it was time to leave. Not that he knew they were lies. Cara found out that he was based in Italy and had visited the city to attend a function but thought to check on Adonis and confirm the rumour of him finding a bride.Frankly, she enjoyed spending time with the old man and might've wished at some point that this wasn't all pretence, but there was nothing she could do. The reality remained that it was. Adonis, on the other hand, was of no help as usual. He left the entire storytelling to her, only throwing in an occasional grunt and hum.The moment his grandfather left, he retired back into his study, leaving Cara to herself as she walked around the big empty mansion, receiving only subtle greeting nods from the bodyguards at their various stations. She had a lot of time to collect her thoughts. Antonio had yet to get back to her; well, he said in two days, so she'd still wait. But what if he doesn't believe an
Adonis's voice was like a calm before the storm. His words were barely above a whisper, but a lion's roar couldn't have been more terrifying than them."What? Did I touch a nerve?" Cara taunted with a wicked smile. "You heard your nonno. Your fathe—Bang!Adonis slammed his fist on the desk, the sound echoing throughout the room. He leaned back on his chair."How dare you? What do you know about me?" His voice wasn't raised, but his face was so hard that even a rock wouldn't hold a candle to it. Cara smirked. She was right about his father being a sore topic for him. The next question was, why?"I may not know a thing, but I know you're just an emotionally damaged man projecting his Daddy issues on people."The next minute, Adonis was out of the chair, his hand tightly clenched around her throat."Shut it!" He roared in her face.Cara gasped for air."No! This... this is... how it feels... to use people's weak... weaknesses against them." She managed to get out."Weaknesses? You know
Cara paced across the room. Her phone in her hand as she waited for a call. She looked at the message displayed on the screen.Wait.Just one word. She had repeatedly checked it to be sure since she got it yesterday, but it still was one word. It didn't change. It was her last day before she was to return to the Bernardi Mansion. After her passionate moment with Adonis, she packed her things and left early the next day, found a simple hotel near the funeral parlour where her father's remains were and logged in there for the day. It was an emotional time, but she finally got to pay her last respects. It was a reminder about why she was doing all this. Revenge. Revenge for her father who died unjustly.Adonis hadn't allowed her to leave the mansion without a car and the card, even if she didn't want to. She still had some spare cash saved up, but it was either she took them along or stayed back. She'd visited her workplaces to inform them of her resignation and cleared out most thin
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
