It wasn't until noon of the next day that Cara was woken by the urge to pee. Still sleepy, she rolled out of bed with a big yawn, her hair a fizzled mess as she blindly located the restroom.
She forcefully plopped one eye open as she did her business, staring at the transparent bath cubicle in the combined bathroom. Cara sat upright. All traces of sleep vanished from her eyes. Transparent bath cubicle? In her home? She hurriedly finished her business and dashed out of the restroom. She had almost pulled open the door of the room when memories of the previous day came flooding into her mind. The lightness she felt disappeared and was replaced with the gloomy feeling from the day before. She turned back towards the queen-sized bed and caught sight of some clothes laid out by the side. A black pair of sweats and a new set of underwear in her size were kept neatly, and by the side, a new toothbrush. She felt exposed at the fact that someone came in while she was asleep and mentally reminded herself to lock up the room next time. Picking up the clothes and brush, she walked back to the room to get ready for the day. She had just changed into the spare clothes and was combing her fingers through her wet hair when a firm knock resounded at the door. "Who is it?" "Adonis. Can I come in?" "Hold on." She ran around the room, putting away her previously worn clothes before pulling the door open. "Hi" Adonis hummed in reply, walking past her to take a seat on the bed. "You slept in." "I didn't sleep early last night," Cara replied. Adonis hummed again. If he was curious about the reason why, he didn't let it show. Instead, he pulled open the brown envelope he'd brought along and handed her a document and a pen. "That's the contract. Before we go further, you'd have to put your signature on it. Mine's on it already." Cara scanned through the contents. "Two copies?" "I believe you'd need to have one." She nodded in agreement. "In summary, it states that you agree to be my wife for a year and in return, you'll get protection for yourself and your friend only since you have no family left. You'll also get a payment of one million dollars per month for twelve months. As my wife, you'd have access to two cars of your choice in the garage and a card that I'll store with 300 grand every week for your normal upkeep. Any other special expenses will have to be communicated with my accountant. Is that all right with you?" Adonis asked Cara who kept on bobbing her head absentmindedly. He'd lost her since the access to two cars and 300 grand per week statement. She shook her head to snap out of her dumbfounded state, her face holding a scrutinizing look "Apart from the hotel and club, what other business did you say your family was into?" Adonis stared at her, his eyebrows pulled down as his eyes narrowed into slits. "I never said." "But if you did?" "Our family had dabbled into winemaking for years. My great-grandfather built a wine-making factory, and it's what we're majorly known for. I don't know if you noticed on the drive up to the estate, but the mansion is built at the centre of a grape vineyard." Cara pursed her lips "I did." "This is just the American branch. The major vineyard is back home in Italy on over 700 hectares of land. Aside from that, we have various hotels and clubs around. Why do you ask?" "Nothing. Let me sign this quickly." She squeaked out with a nervous laugh as she signed the papers before handing them back to Adonis. He placed one back into the brown file and pushed it back into Cara's hands. "Here, this is yours. Follow me." He stood up and headed for the door without waiting for a reply. Cara walked behind Adonis as he led her through a corridor until they reached another staircase. "There's more than one floor?" She blurted out. "Four to be exact." And then, he led her up the staircase. "This mansion is like a family inheritance. It has been passed down from six generations back. It became mine the moment my father died." Cara looked taken aback. This was the first time he was willingly divulging personal information about himself. "Your father's dead?" "Don't sweat it. It's been a few years." "I'm not sweating anything. In case you've forgotten, mine died yesterday, and it's your fault." Adonis faltered in his steps. He glanced over his shoulder. "Is that what you think Bel?" Bel? That was new. But she didn't care. New nickname or not, he was the enemy. "That's what I know." He shrugged. "If you say so." And then continued up the staircase, "There's the underground parking area, the first floor where the living room, the dining room, the rest area and the kitchen is. The second floor mainly consists of spare rooms for the guests, a movie or pool room as Luca likes to call it and a small general gym for anyone." He paused as they arrived at the third floor. Cara instantly knew that the floor was inaccessible to guests. Unlike the other floors with simple welcoming colours and enough lights, this was painted in monotone grey and all the lights were dim. It was like a mini flat in the mansion itself. From where they stood, she had the entire overview of the floor. A simple, minimalistic living area adjoined to a kitchen and a small dining area with a two-seater dining table. To the far right was a transparent room filled with various types of workout instruments. To the left were other rooms, but their doors were shut, so she couldn't tell what they were for. Even in the minimalist decor, the floor looked so enigmatic, and she could practically see dollar signs all over. "You stay on this floor right?" "The entire floor is mine. I had it remodelled to my taste. I may not look like it but I value privacy." Cara snorted. "You're telling me. So Mr Bernardi, what about the last floor?" Adonis spun around, catching her off guard. "I call you Cara. Sometimes Bellissima. It'll be hard to convince my Nonno when you're so formal." Cara looked everywhere but at him. "Nonno?" "Grandfather." "And Bellissima?" "Gorgeous." This caught her attention. "I look gorgeous to you?" Adonis offered a bored stare. "That shouldn't be a legal question." He took a step towards her. "Alessandro. Say it." Cara felt her cheeks become hot, she was sure that she'd be burning a bright red at this point. How come he managed to make almost every conversation sound so alluring? Adonis took a step closer. "Why that? Why not Adonis." There was something about that name that made her feel uncomfortable. And not in an uncomfortable way if that even made sense. He ignored her question. "Come on Bel. Alessandro." Cara cleared her throat. "Ale... Alessandro." She softly called, her voice barely above a whisper. Adonis's grey eyes became darker than the night, and she could've sworn she saw him shiver in delight. She quickly created a diversion. "How we done now? I'd like to go downstairs to my room." "Your room's on this floor." He replied in a husky voice. "I thought this floor's for you. Moreover, I don't see a spare room here." Adonis lips curved to the side, making his Greek godlike sculpted jaw more prominent. "That's because you'll be staying in my room."Cara trailed behind Adonis as he pulled open one of the closed doors, a frustrated pout on her lips."I would not lie and say I've not thought about it, but is it really necessary?""Yes.""Why? No one would notice anyway." "Yes, they would. The mansion is like a chill house for the guys. Luca stayed over yesterday and he does that whenever we have pending work or his girlfriend is out of town. Moreover, the other guys would be suspicious if we claimed to be married but are staying in separate rooms.""Luca has a girlfriend?" Cara asked incredulously."Yes. Been engaged for over a year now." "Oh. Wow."No wonder he sounded like a sap the night before. She peeked at Adonis, a calculating look on her face. How exactly were they friends when they were totally different? A small ding echoed and she watched Adonis pull out his phone from his back pocket, scrolling through it. He looked up when she refused to go into the room."Are you coming in or what?""Coming coming." A gasp escape
"What do you mean your grandfather just landed on the estate?" Cara shrieked."Landed as in jet, airplane," Adonis stated with a stoic expression. "You don't know what it means to land a plane?" Cara grounded her teeth together, trying to maintain her cool."I don't mean that! I know what a plane is, thank you very much. You said I wouldn't meet him until the day after tomorrow.""I thought so too." He yanked the black shirt he had on over his head. "I thought so too, but he's here now, so get your act together and be ready to meet him." "What am I going to say? I know nothing about you. What if he doesn't believe me?" Her gaze followed his hand to the waist of his sweatpants."And what the hell are you doing?" She cried out quickly, averting her gaze."Changing as you should. Nonno is a very weird person, and he's all about first impressions. Wear something pretty. Not too flashy but elegant." "How can I change with you in the room?" She asked, still looking away from him, her eye
Cara's POVRemember when I said no luxury in this mansion could blow my mind away?I lied. The first thing that came to my mind the moment we walked into what looked to be Adonis's study was, 'what the actual fudge?'This wasn't a study; it was a freaking intelligence room. I wouldn't even be able to tell that it was supposed to be a study if it wasn't for the in-built wall library that held over a thousand books-I am definitely sure about that, and the big black mahogany desk and chair that was placed a bit further from it. On the desk was a big globe that had a map of the world. Even if I tried, there was no way I could ignore the five computerised screens neatly arranged on what looked to be a little conference table. They were of different models and styles and spread out around them were different gadgets, of which I did not even know their names. Was Adonis a secret spy or what? I thought things like this were only reserved for movies. One glance around the room, and I could
Cara's POVAdonis's grandfather released a deep questioning rumble."He's not?"With a glance at Adonis, I confirmed."He's not. But among everyone that I've ever been with, he's the only one I'd like to spend the rest of my life with. He might be strong-headed, stubborn, and adamant, but he wants the best for me. That is enough for me." I shuffled closer to Adonis, resting my head on his arm in hopes that his grandfather bought my story. It wasn't all lies; Adonis was really those things, and he does want the best for me, even if it might be because he wants the best for himself.Adonis's grandfather silently studied me for a minute. I felt Adonis pull me closer till I was practically sitting on his lap and his grandfather's already raised brow went higher. My face tingled with a warm feeling, blushing a bright pink. "Stop shuffling about; be bold!" I felt him breathe down my ear.Turning to meet his gaze, he nodded in encouragement. That was the push I needed for the nervous feeli
Dimitri spent over an hour listening to Cara's lies before he decided it was time to leave. Not that he knew they were lies. Cara found out that he was based in Italy and had visited the city to attend a function but thought to check on Adonis and confirm the rumour of him finding a bride.Frankly, she enjoyed spending time with the old man and might've wished at some point that this wasn't all pretence, but there was nothing she could do. The reality remained that it was. Adonis, on the other hand, was of no help as usual. He left the entire storytelling to her, only throwing in an occasional grunt and hum.The moment his grandfather left, he retired back into his study, leaving Cara to herself as she walked around the big empty mansion, receiving only subtle greeting nods from the bodyguards at their various stations. She had a lot of time to collect her thoughts. Antonio had yet to get back to her; well, he said in two days, so she'd still wait. But what if he doesn't believe an
Adonis's voice was like a calm before the storm. His words were barely above a whisper, but a lion's roar couldn't have been more terrifying than them."What? Did I touch a nerve?" Cara taunted with a wicked smile. "You heard your nonno. Your fathe—Bang!Adonis slammed his fist on the desk, the sound echoing throughout the room. He leaned back on his chair."How dare you? What do you know about me?" His voice wasn't raised, but his face was so hard that even a rock wouldn't hold a candle to it. Cara smirked. She was right about his father being a sore topic for him. The next question was, why?"I may not know a thing, but I know you're just an emotionally damaged man projecting his Daddy issues on people."The next minute, Adonis was out of the chair, his hand tightly clenched around her throat."Shut it!" He roared in her face.Cara gasped for air."No! This... this is... how it feels... to use people's weak... weaknesses against them." She managed to get out."Weaknesses? You know
Cara paced across the room. Her phone in her hand as she waited for a call. She looked at the message displayed on the screen.Wait.Just one word. She had repeatedly checked it to be sure since she got it yesterday, but it still was one word. It didn't change. It was her last day before she was to return to the Bernardi Mansion. After her passionate moment with Adonis, she packed her things and left early the next day, found a simple hotel near the funeral parlour where her father's remains were and logged in there for the day. It was an emotional time, but she finally got to pay her last respects. It was a reminder about why she was doing all this. Revenge. Revenge for her father who died unjustly.Adonis hadn't allowed her to leave the mansion without a car and the card, even if she didn't want to. She still had some spare cash saved up, but it was either she took them along or stayed back. She'd visited her workplaces to inform them of her resignation and cleared out most thin
The moment Cara stepped into the mansion, she knew she wasn't alone, as muffled voices could be heard coming from the dining room. Leaving her suitcase in the living room, she headed over to see who it was. Six pairs of eyes stared at her as she pulled open the door.Four were familiar faces she had seen a least once, while the other two she felt no sense of familiarity for. One was a pretty young lady who had her hair in a high ponytail, and the other was an elderly-looking woman who looked to be no less than sixty-five years old. Luca was the first to speak, waving energetically with a big grin on his face."Hey, Cara. Welcome back."One of the ladies spoke up and snapped her head towards him at the mention of Cara's name."Cara?" Her face lit up in recognition. "Adonis's Cara?" Luca nodded, and she jumped to her feet to grab Cara by the hand, pulling her in for a hug. One would think they were close friends."Hey! I'm Cecelia, Luca's fiancé. He's told me so much about you. I c
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
