Adonis POV
Leaning against the window of my study, I looked down, watching the staffs run around, putting the final touches on the decorations of the hall. It was the eve of the wedding, and I felt content. This was the final step to activating my plan—my plan to bring down the Grecos once and for all. I must admit that I am not a patient man, and the wait has kept me on the edge. I was in constant worry that I'd wake up one day, and my grandfather would come up with another stupid condition to prevent me from being Capo. Some might say it wasn't his fault and the ones behind the rumours were to blame, but not me. He had the power to shut it all down. A single order from him would wipe them all out, yet, he chose to remain quiet. Just like my father did. I couldn't help that gut feeling that kept on telling me that Cara was planning something. Something I still didn't know about; however, I had my eyes on her. I would not have a little brat spoil the very thing I'd worked hard for all my life. Everyone was occupied with one thing or the other. I watched as Cara's friend, Tina, said something and they laughed. The door opened, and I didn't have to look back to see who it was. "Have the men follow around that Tina girl," I instructed Luca. "What's up? Did you hear anything?" He asked, but I shrugged in reply. "I just want to be on my toes." Luca followed my gaze and didn't ask anymore when he saw I was in deep thought. "So, are you all hyped for tomorrow?" He diverted, earning an eye roll from me. The sound of his footsteps got closer, and I felt his hand on my shoulder. "You know you can actually make this real Adonis? It doesn't have to be fake." I shrugged his hand off. "I don't do commitments, Luca. You know this." He sighed in resignation. I'd have to agree that Luca was very tenacious. Knowing that when I set my mind on something, it can't be changed, he had been trying his best to convince me, but marriage is not for me. I'd do everything in my power not to fall in love. Contrary to what everyone thinks, it's not that I can't fall in love; I chose not to, and at times when I come across someone who is in sync with me, it becomes extra hard not to. Apart from going against my authority, Cara was a lovely person, but I had other more important priorities. Love equals weakness, and I don't need one. I have lived the past few years fine without it, and I'd continue to live just fine without it. When he didn't get a reply, he patted my shoulder before turning towards the exit. "Anyway, I think it's best I go check on the hall decoration. Cecelia left Freddy and Mario in charge." He suddenly halted his steps as if he'd just remembered something important. "I forgot to mention Cara asked for the blueprints of the mansion... saying something about remodelling or whatnot? Do you have renovation plans?" That caught my attention. "She asked for what?" Ever since Cara had gotten back from her two-day trip, she'd been acting distant. I thought it was due to the wedding planning at first, but it's like she was consistently trying to avoid me. She was in bed before me and wouldn't wake up till I left. She'd have her meals whenever I'm not having mine. She spends time with everyone in my absence, but the moment I'm around, she disappears. The most confusing of all was her attitude. One moment, she's all smiles, but the second I step in, her smiles are replaced with a scornful look, and then she disappears. What in the world was she planning? Why did she ask for the blueprint? I looked up at Luca, and our eyes met. He instantly knew I wasn't aware. "You didn't know?" "No. I didn't." "Then how come... why did she request for it?" "I'm not sure." As I spoke those words, a flicker of curiosity ignited in my mind. "When did she ask for it again?" "The day the ladies got back from the bridal shop," Luca responded. "I'll talk to the guards on duty that day." Just as I concluded, a soft knock at the door attracted my attention, and the person walked in with a small frown. I narrowed my eyes in surprise. "Cara?" The topic of discussion herself trotted in wrapped in a small robe, with big fluffy slippers at her feet and a black mask on her face. I threw a wary side glance at her before getting comfortable at my desk. "What are you doing here?" "I can't be here?" She snapped back. "Well, that's my cue to leave," Luca announced before slipping out, but we paid him no mind. "Owing to the fact that you've been trying to avoid me all week, I'll say your being here is suspicious." "Me? Avoid you?" Cara rolled her eyes. "Why would I want to do that?" "I don't know. You tell me." She threw a venomous look at me and I coolly smirked. "If you have something in mind, you're not being very discrete about it." "What do you mean?" "Where are my blueprints? Do you plan on stealing from me after all I've promised to give you? All I've done for you?" The mask on her face prevented me from seeing her facial expression but judging by how she stomped her feet in rage; I could tell she wasn't happy about my choice of words. "I am no thief." "Oh really? Then why didn't you tell me? Surely you knew Luca was going to inform me. If you didn't want me to be suspicious, you should've discussed it with me first." "That's precisely the reason why I'm here!" She exclaimed. "Well, you're late. Now, get out of my office. I have so much work to do." "You would not speak to me like that or I'll— "Or you'll what?" I boomed. If I was going to live with her for a year, she needed to get it straight that I was in charge. I would not have a little girl undermine my authority in front of my men. I refuse to be a weakling like my father. "Why can't you drop the condescending attitude for a moment? Get off your high horse, Mr. Bernardi. You're nothing but a chauvinistic, self-centred, egoistic bastard running an illegal gang." She spat out with a spiteful look, and I gave a cold laugh. "At the end of it all, I'll still have you on your knees." "You— "Enough! The attitude was cute at first, but not anymore. I will not trade words with a little girl who knows nothing about how the word works. How my world works!" I sneered. "Listen and listen well. I have my eyes on you and will not hesitate to take you out if you as much as step an inch out of your line. Remember that!" I heaved, barely containing my anger. "Now get out of my office, and don't keep me waiting for too long tomorrow." I thought I had set the boundaries and cleaved her wings enough to have her submit to me. I never could've been more wrong...Adonis POVInhaling deeply, I drew in a calming breath as I started my mental count once again, resisting the urge to tap my feet. It's official. She's insane. No sane person, after receiving a death threat, would still choose to defile the order given, but she did. I've never met anyone as infuriating as that little girl in my entire life, and now she has me wondering if she was actually the best fit for this.I resumed my count, my left little finger twitching rapidly at the amount of self-restraint it was taking me not to burst out through the door and drag her to the alter myself."Relax. It's normal." Luca whispered to me.I threw him a blank stare, as I had completely forgotten that he was by my side. He was shaking with nerves in his grey tuxedo; one would think he was the groom.I glanced down at my black tuxedo, which I had to force myself into this morning. Left to me, a dark pair of jeans and a white polo would've been just fine, but for some reason, everyone was against i
Adonis and Cara both whipped their heads towards Dimitri in shock!"What?"Dimitri smiled."Oh. I didn't know you guys would be so happy about it. Should I see if I can extend it to a week?""No!" They echoed together. "Why?" He looked between them both, and Cara signalled Adonis to speak up. She didn't think she was ready to spend three whole days in an unknown place with him. At this point, she wanted no distractions, and I've been doing fine for the past week. Being cooped up in a room with him was a temptation she wasn't sure she could overcome. His eyes darted to Adonis's, then pointed to his grandfather. Adonis stared back with a bored look before giving in."The coronation is next week." He plainly stated, and Dimitri waved him off."Of course. We have a lot of time before then.""I have things to do. Preparations to make.""Preparations that can wait, Figlio (son). Take your wife for a vacation. She's been through a lot these past few days and deserves it." Cara brooded on
"Mr. and Mrs. Bernardi. We'll be landing shortly. Please fasten your seat belts and prepare for touch ground." Cara awoke to the announcement from the pilot, letting out a big yawn.Had they reached already? She looked to her side to see Adonis passing the last of some orders on his phone before he ended the call and adjusted himself."You're up."A simple statement. No emotion whatsoever."Yes. Is there a problem?" She asked."No. I just wanted the men to be ready for anything." "You have men in Italy too?" "I told you, Cara. It's home." He dipped his head to the side, a smug look on his face. "You know what? Why don't I show you around on the first day? We can explore after that." Cara couldn't help the giddiness she felt."You have time for that?""Like I said, we're on our honeymoon. We might as well act like it." His voice went dangerously low, and she didn't miss the implication behind his last words. Before she knew it, they were landing, and excitement bubbled up within her
Cara's POV "Nonno (grandfather)." I heard Adonis's voice as I blinked my eyes open. He was on a call. "Why didn't you tell me? Is this why you sent me home?" It had an accusatory tone and he paused for the other person, who I'm guessing is his grandfather, to speak before replying."No. Their little threat is nothing. You know it's normal during times like this." He paused again, and I shut my eyes quickly when I noticed him turning towards me. He released a deep sigh then a grumble before he spoke again."I just hope you're not hiding anything more from me. Cara's fine. No, we didn't have sex yesterday. Why do you even want to know that?" He paused again, and I wondered when the call was going to end. My face had turned into a blushing mess. Since when did he start having conversations like this with his grandfather? Maybe they were closer than I thought."You're not angry she didn't wear the traditional gown?" Adonis asked, and I could hear surprise in his voice. "Yeah. She's
Cara's POV"Get up; we're leaving now," Adonis ordered as soon as he ended the call. I acted like I wasn't listening; my food suddenly seemed more interesting. He had just taken a few steps when he noticed I wasn't behind him."Didn't you hear me? I said, We're leaving?""To where?""Back to the US." I pouted— like I actually pursed my lips together pouted."But we just got here, and you're yet to show me around like you promised." Adonis groaned in frustration. "There was a break-in at the mansion. We can always come back later. Now let's go." I refused to stand up. Folding my hands to my chest like a spoiled child. "No." "What is wrong with you, Cara? This is serious." "I'm not going." I remained adamant, hoping my childish tantrum would save me an extra minute or two. But Adonis was more quick-witted than I thought. His eyes narrowed into thin slits."Is there something you're not telling me? Did you have something to do with the break-in?""What? How can? Pshh... no. I'm
Adonis slowly opened his eyes, sitting up gently. He stretched his sore body and felt his bones pop in places he never knew was possible. His eyes took in the familiar white walls, his nose picking up the stench of concentrated antiseptic; even without the continuous beeping of the machine by his side, he'd recognize this place anytime. He had been here more times than should be considered healthy. He stretched once again to be sure he felt no underlying pain. If the throbbing ache in his ribs and light headache were all the injuries sustained, then he was in luck. Honestly, he expected more. The door to the hospital room quietly slid open as though the person on the other side was avoiding making unnecessary noises, and Luca stepped in with a jar of water and a cup in hand. His eyes met Adonis's, and he paused in his steps. He was pissed. Adonis could tell that much from the lack of words the moment he stepped in."You're up. Good for you." Luca walked over to his bedside and dep
Cara's POVI don't know how many hours I slept for-but I knew I drifted in and out of consciousness a few times. The first time was after the accident. I wasn't fully awake, but I knew I was being carried by Adonis.I'd recognize his masculine, woody scent anywhere. My vision was blurry, and the pain was stabbing into my bones all over, but I could feel his rapid heartbeat as he breathed heavily. He was injured too. That much I could tell. Then he stopped and gently set me down on the grass before settling beside me. I didn't understand what was going on, but whenever I tried to think about it, my head hurt, so I stopped. Another wave of pain hit me, and just as I was about to lose consciousness again, I felt a soft, warm press on my nape as he pulled me closer. The second time I gained consciousness was only for a short while. My heavy eyes opened for just a minute, and I could see people frantically running around me. I couldn't hear a single thing due to the loud ringing noise in
"So she'll be fine if she just takes her medication. I advise that she take a lot of rest to allow her bone to heal." The doctor said to Adonis, who was sitting beside Cara on the bed.It was the next day, and they were about to be discharged."Are you sure it's okay for her to leave?" Adonis glanced at Cara; she looked worse than he did. Her left leg was wrapped in a crutch, her head in a bandage, and her arm in a cast. "If you're going to be discharged, then I want to be discharged too." Cara harrumphed. The people in the room had silently been watching them bicker back and forth as Adonis had been trying to convince Cara to stay back for the past thirty minutes, but she wasn't having it. He had work piled up from the few days he wasn't around and had yet to fully investigate the break-in scenario, so he decided to head back home. The moment Cara found out, she also decided to leave.Adonis sighed in frustration. He couldn't believe she was already back to arguing with him so quick
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
