“Cohen!”
“Patricia.” Cohen called in a low voice, locking eyes with her in bewilderment.
After a few seconds of staring at each other, Patricia took her eyes away from him.
He released William's hand, and he put his hands in his pocket, looking downward.
Patricia wished to say a word and break the silence, but her mouth betrayed her and refused to pull out a word.
“Mom, I'm sorry,” Williams apologized, explaining, “I mistook him for dad when he entered the hall and I followed him here,”
Williams tinted his lips with a smile, furthering, “he is a nice guy too. He promised to buy me chocolate and help me search for you.”
“Patricia, Is is your son? Are you're-married? When?” Cohen’s questions came, and she looked at him.
Williams looked at Cohen. “Did you know my mom?”
“Yes, she-” Cohen said, wanting to reveal the truth, but Patricia cut him off.
“Yes, Williams. He is just a random person from my past. Though I thought I knew him, but turned out I did not…” she tacitly ridiculed him so Williams wouldn’t understand.
Her words caught him off guard. “Hun!” He sounded stunned.
Patricia bent her neck to stare at Williams’s eye. “He is someone I shouldn't have crossed paths with.”
“Oh,” Williams comprehended. “He is a bad guy. Gosh! He is not like that.”
Patricia nodded. “Yes, he is. And he is nothing good compared to dad.” She analyzed.
“But he looks like a really nice guy.” Williams let out, still not yet convinced by his mother.
“And mum said he is not. Has mum ever lied to you? Won’t you believe mom?” Patricia uttered.
“I will.” Williams accepted.
Cohen densely stared at Patricia and her son debated. He was caught in surprise and didn’t expect such statements to come out of Patricia's mouth.
He never expected her to be so bold to say such to his face. She insulted him in his presence!
“How-” he wanted to talk.
“Will you cause a scene in the present of a kid?” She flung a jaw dropping question.
He sighed. He closed his eyes and opened them before the eyelids could touch each other. He took his right hand out of the pocket and lengthened it forward for a handshake. “Congratulations.”
She snickered. “Why-” she intended to reject it, but her right eye caught a glimpse of Anna walking in their direction.
She stretched her hand out and accepted the handshake with a dazzling grin. “Thank you.”
Patricia brightened her smile and held onto Cohen’s hand till Anna arrived beside Cohen.
Anna thought Cohen was mad at her because she was a bit late. “I’m sorry, dear. It was traffic.” She apologized, gazing at Cohen, paying no attention to the person shaking hands with her husband.
“Hi, madam.” Patricia waved at her, beaming.
Anna looked at the person and seeing Patricia, her heart escaped a breath for a month and she took a step backwards in panic.
“You!” She shouted.
Patricia separated her hand from Cohen and nodded, still maintaining the stunning smile on her face. “Yes, me.”
Anna pointed at her, still staring at her in disbelief, almost unable to pull out another word. “Pat…”
Patricia drooped her head. “Yes, it’s me. Your ex-friend, Patricia. Are you surprised to see me?” She raised a question, and since it didn’t require an answer, she furthered. “How have you been, Anna?”
Anna’s lips shivered. She wasn’t sure if it was out of shock or fear, but seeing Patricia’s strong reaction, she quickly her timid expression vanished into a thin smile. “I’ve been doing great,” she answered, inquiring, “And you? How have you been?”
Without letting Patricia respond, she mocked. “How do I expect you to be? Your life must have been in a mess already.”
Patricia sighed and grinned with the left part of her lip. “Mess you say?” She repeated in an amazed tone.
She scoffed and filled her lips with a cute smile Anna has always envied. “I’ve been doing more than you can even imagine.”
Anna put her arm around Cohen’s neck. “How can you do great without a great husband like mine besides you?”
“Your husband?” Patricia was shocked.
“Yes. Cohen is my husband. He finds his happiness in me and wants me to stay beside him forever. I am delighted to tell you we are happily married,” Anna confirmed. “Our marriage is even fruitful already. We are blessed with a beautiful daughter.”
Patricia stared at them, shocked, feeling the sting of heartbreak once more, causing her heart to reel from pains again.
A gentle scoff escaped her lip, and she nodded. “Wow!” She was impressed. She has practiced for days like this. A day when she will cross paths with her enemy.
She polished her face with a smile, determined not to act weak in front of them. “That’s great. Congratulations to you guys,” she split out. “In fact, I am happy for you guys,”
“It’s just a little disappointing that I was absent. You guys should have invited me. I wish I grace you wedding with my presence,” she further act ‘no concern,’ “I might even be the bridesmaid if you want,”
“Hun!” Anna was caught by surprise. She took her hand off Cohen’s neck and gazed at Patricia, frowning her face, confused.
“Why are you happy for us?” She interrogated. “Shouldn't you be angry?”
“Angry?” Patricia exclaimed, lifting her eyebrows as her head moved back a bit.
She chuckled. “Why will I be angry when I am already blessed with everything I could ever dream of?” She uttered in a questioning tone.
“Anna, you know I’ve always been lucky from the start and that’s why you envied me.” She pointed out.
“I didn’t envy you. I never did!” Anna defended herself. Her high raised a bit in guilt.
Patricia widened her eyes in a questioning manner. “Oh, really?”
“Yes, all I did was reveal your dirty secrets. And that's because I couldn't watch you continue to cheat on an innocent guy,” Anna expressed. “It’s not as if I made a false accusation. The evidence is cleared. I presented a proof.”
“Okay,” Patricia let out. She understood Anna wanted to drag the conversation, and since she wasn’t in for it, she changed the topic. “Well, that’s now your problem to deal with. Not mine anymore,”
She grabbed Williams’s hand and slightly bent her neck. “I can’t decide yet if it will be nice to see you again and seriously, I can’t say if I want to see you again or not,” she poured out. “Whatever. I will leave you guys because I am quite busy.”
“Are you still flirting around with men?” Anna raised a question, adding, “I guess that's what you are busy with. You can never change.”
Patricia cracked up. She understood Anna said that to embarrass her, so she wouldn't watch her speak dirty of her. “What makes a difference between us?” She asked and instantly shook her head, correcting herself. “No, there's a difference. I am better than you.”
“How are you better than me?” Anna questioned.
“I mean, if truly I flirt around with men, what would you call yours? You are a husband snatcher man,” Patricia split out. “You have all bad behavior. You're a betrayal, a liar, a traitor, to mention a few,”
“Anna, let me give you a brief definition of who you are. You are the most dangerous human. An animal in human skin,” Patricia continued, seeing the impression she wanted on Anna’s face. “To be frank with you, you have the dirtiest mind for human”
“Your heart is dirty. All you did wasn’t the work of the devil. You are the devil yourself and you need salvation before it’s too late,” she advised. “Though I doubt it’s not late already.”
Anna fixed her eyes on Patricia’s lips, watching her throw those words at her. She was shocked at the new version of Patricia, which was far different from who she knew in the past.
She never imagined Patricia would retaliate or speak back at her with those harsh words!
Her mind boiled in anger, and she stepped forward. Her hand raised up, wanting to slap Patricia.
Cohen moved closer, attempting to hold Anna back, but another hand reached for Anna first.
It was Bastian.
“Unh!” Cohen exclaimed. He didn’t expect another guy to stand up for Patricia.
Bastian flung Anna’s hand and walked to Patricia's side. “Are you okay?” He asked. His caring voice matched the concern on his face.
Patricia nodded. “Yes, I am fine.”
“Bastian, sorry for your loss.” Cohen showed empathy, buying himself a gaze from Bastian.
“Thank you,” Bastian responded, turning to him. “Cohen, who is this rude woman?”
“What are you doing with someone like her?” He asked with a belittling tone.
Patricia was pissed off, but she composed herself not to act reckless in Bastian’s present. “I’m his wife,” she introduced, apologizing, “I’m sorry you meet in this situation. This peasant is just rude, and I want to teach her some lessons.”
“You’re his wife? So? What’s special about being his wife? How can you lie that she is rude? I’ve been watching you since you started this fight.” Bastian poured out.
“Actually, you can’t understand…” Anna tried to defend herself, but Bastian gave her no space.
“Stop disgracing yourself in public? Your husband is an influential person. Why are you embarrassing him with your presence?”
“I’m sorry, Bastian. Forgive her on my behalf.” Cohen intervened.
Bastian resorted to his gaze on Cohen. “Cohen, what kind of competent guy would marry this kind of woman these days?” He embarrassed him in a concerned tone. “How can she act like this in your presence and you can't even caution him?”
“Are you blind by love or ignorance?” Bastian asked. He felt so concerned and his mind was boiling with anger, causing him to be splitting out more than he should say.
“What are you talking about?” Cohen questioned.
Bastian discharged a deep breath. “I mean, you are a great guy. Why did you stoop low to marry someone like her when there are many great ladies?” He let out. He wanted to be nicer with his words, but couldn't help it.
Cohen felt humiliated, but since Anna caused it, he has no option but to still apologize. “I'm sorry.”
“For your sake, I will overlook this once. But if she creates a scene or is rude to anybody in my surroundings again, I won’t let it slide.” Bastian warned.
“You're defending this woman because you don't know her past. I am sure you will chase her away if you know what she has done.” Anna bad-mouthed.
“I care less about her past,” Bastian declared. “It’s your problem to battle with. Okay.”
“Are we still welcome here?” Cohen inquired, using the question to change the tune of the conversation. “Is our invitation still valid?”
“It is, but you are only welcome into the bereavement center if you can have your woman in control,” Bastian savaged in simplicity. “Warn her to know her place and stay in her lane.”
“Thank you.” Cohen showed gratitude.
Bastian carried Williams on his shoulder and rounded his arms around Patricia’s neck. “Let’s go.” He said.
Patricia smiled. “Okay.” She let out, and they walked into the elevator, giggling.
Cohen’s eyeballs turned red, watching Patricia walk away in another guy’s arms.
He didn’t know if he was jealous or angry. All he just wanted was a miracle, which would separate Bastian from Patricia.
He wished he could go after them and flinched Bastian’s hand away from her body or better still, commanded Bastian to take his hand off her.
He couldn't take his eyes off them till they walked into the elevator.
He ground his teeth, watching Patricia’s lips filled with joyous laughter before the elevator closed, and the pain of not being able to take any action saddened him.
Anna traced Cohen’s gaze to Patricia’s face, and she felt discomfort with it. She took a step closer to him. “Cohen,” she called, inquiring, “what are you thinking?”
Cohen turned his face to her and gazed into her eyes. “Anna, will you wait for me in the car or let me have you under my control?”
‘Where is Patricia?’ Anna thought in her mind, sipping a little of the wine a waiter just poured into her glass.“I won’t let you go scot free,” she vowed, feeling unrest. Her heart has been in chaos and her mind filled with fear after seeing Cohen’s reaction while watching Patricia walk away with another guy.“Where is she?” Anna thought to herself. She put the glass on the table and slowly veered around, scanning around the hall till she saw Patricia sitting with her son on the same table with Bastian.Anna clicked tongue. “Fuck! Why is she sitting there?” She whispered.Patricia’s table was in the first row of the hall while Anna and Cohen’s table was in the last row in the back. The hall was wide and long, so they were far from each other.Anna still wanted to chat with Patricia and she needed a chance to cross paths with her, but she couldn't act freely because of Cohen, since she was allowed into the bereavement center after she promised not to cause trouble and avoided Patricia.
After the funeral, Bastian attended a meeting, so he ordered a cab to take Patricia and Williams's home earlier. He stopped at a mini supermarket to get a chocolate for Williams on his way home.Bastian entered the living room, and Williams ran to meet him. “Dad.”Bastian smiled and carried Williams. He walked to the living room center and dropped him. “Here is your chocolate.”Williams collected his chocolate, but his face was dull, making Bastian instantly noticed. “What happened to you?” He investigated. “What’s wrong?”“Mum…” Williams said.“Mum? What’s wrong with her? Where is she?” Bastian asked, worried.Williams looked downward, confessing, “you told me to always make her happy always, but I disappointed you.”Bastian frowned his forehead, confused. “What happened? Did you walk around again?” He interrogated.Williams shook his head. “No, I didn’t walk around. I just requested to see the guy from the funeral ceremony,” he explained. “Mom objected. She said he was a bad guy, so
Anna was feeling sleepy, but didn't go to bed, waiting for Cohen to get back home. She believed Cohen acted in the event. She expected him to come after her and apologize, but he didn’t. He didn’t even call to check on her since she left the event in anger. It was past 10pm, and he wasn’t back home. She called his line relentlessly, but he didn’t pick his call, and he later switched off his phone. Her heart rotten in fear and she became restless as her heart paved way to negative thoughts.“What if Cohen is with Patricia?”While her mind was still in an uproar, she heard Cohen honked. She stood on her feet and rounded her eyes on her waist.“Where are you coming from?” She challenged immediately as Cohen stepped into the living room.He ignored her question and continued walking.“Where have you been, Cohen?” She asked, panting. “Why are you just returning home?”He paused and stared at her. “Am I late?” He raised a question.“Don’t you see the time? Hun.” She let out.“Since when did
“I’ve had enough of this!” Cohen yelled. He abruptly opened the door and slammed it behind him, not minding it harm Anna, who was coming behind him.“Cohen!” Anna called, running after him.Cohen has been cold to her since the incident at the funeral. He came home late and stopped eating her food. She questioned him about it, but he walked out of her.Cohen increased his speed so that she wouldn't catch up with him. He arrived at the parking lot and quickly entered the car.She got to the parking lot and quickly reached out for the car door and held it tightly. He gave her a deadly glance, but said nothing. He tried to close the door with force and she dragged it with him.He released the car door to her. “What do you think you are doing?”“Why are you treating me like this? What’s my offense?” She asked, wearing a pitiful look and her eyes teary as if she would cry.“How am I treating you?” He pretended.“Cohen, you have changed. Me and your daughter need your attention. Please crea
It’s been over an hour since Cohen has been waiting for Bastian, who Ailee said was in meetings. He checked his wristwatch every second, thinking the meeting was taking long.He doubted Bastian didn't want to see him, and thought it was his order to lie and keep him waiting until he would get fed up and leave.‘Should I leave?’A part of his mind suggested he should leave, but the other part which kept him waiting won.Two hours later, Bastian came out. He was turning his back to Cohen so he didn't notice his presence.Bastian’s phone rang and he picked his call. “Sir, give the president a little more time to get ready. You'll soon know who the new president is,”“I’m fed up.” He whispered. He returned his phone to his chest pocket and a voice came from behind.“The business universe is curious to know your president. He must be a genius.” Cohen said.Bastian was a bit shocked. He glanced backwards, with a confused expression, but seeing it was Cohen, he quickly composed himself. He sm
“Will you sell your company or not?” Bastian asked after a long stare into Cohen’s eyes.Cohen’s mouth was ajar and he couldn't close it until Bastian asked the same question for the third time.“What!”“Cohen, please, be quick with your response.” Bastian said.Cohen shook his head. “That’s not possible!” He yelled. He lowered his voice, furrowing his face. “How can she ask to buy my company for a rebrand?”“Why will I sell my company for her to rebrand?” He kept raising questions as the offer kept ringing in his head. “How’s that possible?”“Cohen, I can’t do that,” he voiced out. “I can’t sell my company. Never will I do that.”Bastian moved his head backward and sighed, taking his hands beside him. “If you can't sell your company to her, I see no reason to be sorry if we can’t help you. It’s the president’s decision, who am I to go against it.”“But-” Cohen tried to talk, but Bastian cut him off.“You should leave now. You’ve no reason to stay longer.”Cohen stood on his feet with
“I can’t take this anymore!” Chairman Hewitt’s voice echoed in the conference room.He was the next major shareholder of Ivy organization after Patricia and had the right to protest. He stood on his feet, threatening, “it’s either the president show his face or step down. He must do either of the two.”The directors on his side stood up. He had planned it with them so they backed him up immediately.“He should show his face!”“Yes!”“If the president can’t reveal himself, he can step down!”“Yes!”“He should!”“He must step down!”“A coward can’t be our president!”“Never!”Bastian watched them pour out their minds and discharge a deep breath. He was fed up with emergency meetings which the shareholders had made a norm to call weekly. All they talked about was the president to show his face so he was tired of explaining and calming them.“Directors.” He called. He wanted to start a conversation even though he didn’t have the right thing to say yet.Chairman Hewitt gave him a deadly sta
Bastian rushed out of the conference and caught up with Patricia before she entered the elevator.“Sis!” His voice came from behind and she turned to look at him.She stopped and smiled. “Brother.”He arrived in front of her and she raised a question. “How’s it? Did I perform well?”He beamed and thumbed up. “Perfect,” he praised. “You will be a great actress.”They smiled for a moment.Bastian stopped smiling and stared at her with concern. “Patricia.” He called. She looked at his face. “Uhm,” she answered, and seeing his expression, she threw a question. “What’s wrong?”“Are you okay?” He inquired. She nodded. “Yes,” she confirmed. “Why do you ask?”He pointed his thumb at the back, crossing it over his shoulder. “What happened inside?” He said. She brightened her smile to make it more convincing. “I’m fine, Bastian. This is just the beginning and I am sure there are still more to come,”“I am prepared for this and I will tackle all my face,” she expressed. “I will face my fear witho
To my dear readers,Thanks for embarking on the journey of my first novel. Your time, coins, gems, and comments mean a lot, and it's the reason I keep going until the end. While writing this book, some left comments to criticize my works and I appreciate them all. I hope you will stay with me and keep giving your support. If things go as planned, we will have another five amazing journeys to embark on in this series and the next books to come are for:1. Ailee and Bastian.2.
-THREE MONTHS LATER-“What are you doing, Cohen?” Patricia challenged as Cohen slowly reversed the car. “Aren’t we going to pick the kid at the school anymore?”“We will.” Cohen answered as he drove into the other lane and headed toward their street.“Then why are you reversing? Why are you heading back home?” She questioned.“I forgot something at home.” Cohen informed.“What did you forget? Hun?” she asked, looking at him with a side of her eyes.“My phone.” Cohen responded.“Why must we go back to pick up your phone? It will take less than an hour to get back home. Can’t you just let’s go?” She queried.“I can’t because I am a business owner. I mustn’t stay away from my phone.” Cohen gave an excuse with his eyes fixed on the road ahead.“It’s the weekend, Cohen. No one will call you today. Stop giving excuses and let’s pick the kids. We shouldn’t keep them waiting for a long time.” Patricia said.“I’m not going because of business, but I need to pay fees before we can take the kids
Cohen discharged a deep breath as he walked out of the bathroom. He paused for a second and rounded his hands over his waist, forgetting what he wanted to do next at that moment.A thought passed through his mind and he wiped his right hand over his face with the left still on the waist.Patricia’s phone rang, and he walked to the cabinet on the bedside and picked it up. “Who could be?” He wondered with his eyes furrowed, confused, and before he could turn to the door, the call ended and a message came into her eyes.Since Patricia’s phone was always unlocked, Cohen saw the message’s content and his eyes enlarged as a surprised tone escaped his mouth. “Hun!”He bit his lower lip and after a few second thought, he reached a conclusion and instantly swiped the message to the left to delete it. He returned the phone to the bed cabinet and rushed out of the room.He arrived in the sitting room and saw his mother watching the TV while Elsie was packing their breakfast out of the kitchen an
“Who is here for me?” Anna threw a question at the security officer escorting her out of the room, showing no interest in meeting the person. The security officer opened the door for her and immediately as she sighted Patricia, she veered around.Patricia quickly stood on her feet. “Is that how to treat a guest?” She threw a question. “Shouldn’t you at least stay to hear why I am here? Your daughter, Rachel, don’t you have any message you want to pass to her?”Patricia’s words made Anna’s feet froze, and she halted for a minute before she slowly veered around and walked to the chair and sat down. “I have no message for Rachel. She doesn’t deserve a mother like me. I don’t worth to be called a mother,” she poured out. “Tell me why you are here. I don’t want to talk with you.”Patricia discharged a deep breath and sighed. She stared at Anna with a pity and despite having a lot of things in her mind, she couldn’t open her mouth to talk at the moment.Anna sighed. “Take your eyes away fro
Anna abruptly opened the door and banged in, panting. “Ma! Ma! Ma!” She shouted, running towards Patricia’s desk.Patricia was shocked, and she couldn’t utter a word. Instead, she widened her eyes and watched Anna arrived in front of her desk before she could pull a word out. “What happened?” She asked, the worried in her voice cooperating with the concern in her voice.Anna breathed heavily as she bent her back and placed her hands on her knees.“What happened?!” Patricia raised her voice. She was getting more scared by Anna’s reaction.Anna panted for another second before she raised her hand and stood straight on her feet. “It’s him…” she uttered, but couldn’t complete her statement. She pointed her thumb at her back, crossing it over her shoulder without looking backward. “It’s him…” she continued, struggling to complete her statement but couldn’t.“It’s who?” Patricia asked, with her lips already quivering. “Calm yourself and talk, Anna. What happened? It’s who? Please, talk. You’
Ailee walked into the office and stood in front of Bastian’s head. She bowed her head, holding a file in her hand. “Good morning, sir,” she greeted, but Bastian, whose head was placed on the desk, didn’t respond to her.“Good morning, sir,” she greeted again, but still no response. She furrowed her face. “What’s wrong with him?” She asked herself in a low voice. She observed him for a second and bent a bit to check if he was sleeping, but his eyes were wide open, making her guess he was just lost in thought. She elevated her shoulder a bit with her mouth shaped to the left a little. “What’s wrong with him?” She asked herself put the file on the desk and let out. “The president said I should give this to you.”She eyed her for another few minutes and turned around to leave, but as she took three steps forward, she halted because she was worried and couldn’t leave Bastian in that situation.“Gosh…” she uttered and discharged a soft breath and, without giving her decision a second thought
Patricia heard a knock on the floor, and she stopped pressing her laptop. She glanced at her wristwatch. “8:05 Am? Who could it be?” She wondered. She stared at the door and raised her voice so it could reach the person. “Come in.” She permitted and immediately continued pressing her laptop.“Good morning, ma.”She heard a familiar voice and instantly raised her gaze. “Cohen?!” she exclaimed with her eyes widened in disbelief, and she couldn’t say another word. Instead, she fixed her eyes on him and watched him stride closer.Cohen arrived in front of his desk and bowed his head. “Good morning, ma,” he greeted. He raised his head and crossed his hand behind him as he stared downward and slightly bent his neck to apologize. “I’m sorry I arrived late,”“I have to drop my mother at the hospital.” He exclaimed.“What are-” Patricia opened her mouth to talk, but Cohen interrupted her.“I’m sorry. I know that’s not an excuse. I shouldn’t involve family matters in business, but I have to sta
“Be careful…” Patricia cautioned Williams, who was already a few steps ahead of her out of the hospital and had been jumping around since the doctor said he was perfectly healthy now. There was no injection for him anymore.“Mom, please call Dad. This call for celebration. I am happy,” Williams let out. He stopped jumping, but couldn’t help pacing fast because he was so excited. He halted and glanced backward at his mother. “And don’t forget to invite Mr. Cohen as well. He needs to be there. I hope he is fine now and will have the strength to come.”“Sure, I will,” she agreed. She took a few steps closer to her and bent in his front. She passed the medicine nylon in her right hand to the left and placed it on Williams’s shoulder. “Williams, I know this won’t sound well with you or you won’t like it, but now that the truth is out and you know who Cohen is, you should change how you address him.”Williams furrowed his face as he raised his shoulder, stretching his hands beside him. “What
-Many weeks later-“Ma, it’s Mrs. Charlotte. She has been waiting for over two hours.” Anna proclaimed immediately as she entered the office. Patricia was working on a file, and Anna’s announcement made her halted. She raised her gaze and looked at Anna’s face. “Why did you keep her waiting?” She questioned. “You should have told her I was in a meeting.”“I did, but she insisted on staying, and Ailee told me to allow her. I even invited her to come into the office to wait for you, but she declined saying she doesn’t worth it.” Anna explained.Patricia sighed and closed the file on her desk. She stood and walked out of her seat, asking, “where is she now?”“At the third floor. She is waiting with others question,” Anna responded. Patricia had already walked to her side, and before she could add another word, Patricia increased her speed and already walked past her.Anna turned around and paced to Patricia with three steps between them. “You can stay. I will go call her.” She offered.
