Lincoln opened the back door for Holly and Eve. Holly said thank you as she passed him, Eve regarded him sceptically, aware of how uncomfortable her mother seemed to be around him.
Lincoln felt a pang of sadness pierce his heart. He always imagined himself the father of Holly’s children. How he wished he could turn back the clock. Feeling guilty he snapped out of it. He had a beautiful fiancée, and Holly did not want him. What was he thinking? He shook the thoughts from his head and quickly got in the car.“I am sorry to hear that your mother is sick.” Lincoln knew how close Holly was to her mother. He understood how hard this must be for her, especially after the loss of her father when they were teenagers. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything he could do to comfort her.“I am, too.” Holly sighed. It was hard for her to talk about.“Are you excited to visit your grandma?’’ Lincoln asked the young girl, who he strangely wanted to be closer to. Kathy, Holly’s mother, never mentioned the child to him. If he didn’t know Holly was pregnant when she left, he would have been shocked to learn that she even had a daughter. Lincoln assumed that Kathy had only been trying to spare his feelings. He never spoke to anyone about his true feelings regarding Holly, and yet somehow, everyone but Holly seemed to know how madly in love with her he had been all those years ago.Eve looked to Holly; Holly knew it meant that Eve was asking her permission to answer the question. Holly nodded.“Very, I love grandma.” Eve responded shyly.Maggie studied the girls from the front seat. Eve respected and loved her mother; they had a very good bond, it was obvious.Eve wore a stunning red and gold Christmas dress, with long white socks that extended all the way up to her mid-thigh, she had on the cutest little red flats to match her dress. Holly was dressed in almost an identical outfit. They both looked so healthy and happy, it warmed Maggie’s heart to know that her friend had not spent all these years struggling to her by.“What’s your name?” Maggie asked. If she knew Holly, she had a good guess.“My name is Eve.” The little girl smiled brightly.“That’s such a pretty name.” Maggie smiled, but behind the smile she wanted to weep. How cute, Holly had always wanted a little girl, and she always wanted to name her Eve.Holly looked away. She felt so guilty. She knew how much her friend would have wanted to be apart of their lives.“How old are you, Eve?” She asked. Holly tensed beside her daughter. She knew why Maggie was asking. Maggie had obviously guessed who Eve’s father was, and was wondering if she was old enough.“I’m five.” Eve said proudly holding up five fingers.“Oh, wow so big.” Maggie smiled. She knew it. Her hands itched to smack her brother across the back of the head, but thought that might frighten Eve.Lincoln could not understand why Holly had not married Eve’s dad. He knew it was none of his business, and that he should leave it alone but he was unable to let go of the jealousy he had long harboured. “Is your daddy coming for Christmas?” He asked Eve, trying to sound as casual as possible.Eve frowned. Lincoln felt bad as he watched the smile fade from the little girls face in his rear-view mirror, he didn’t mean to make the girl feel sad.“I don’t have a daddy.” Eve whispered looking away from them. Hearing eve mumble like that crushed Holly. She hated that she had not been able to give her daughter both parents. Eve deserves better. This time Maggie did slap Lincoln across the back of the head, what an ass she thought. Lincoln shot Maggie a dirty look, that slap had hurt, and he didn’t understand why she did it.Lincoln stole glances when possible at Holly in the back seat. He felt bad for her, what had happened after she left? Clearly, the boy who got her pregnant did not stick around. What sort of idiot would give up his chance to be with a girl like Holly? And Eve, she was so cute, who would turn their back on being that little girl’s dad. He wanted to smack the man, if he ever found out who he was, he would do exactly that. His hands grasped the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white just thinking about it.“I am sorry, Eve.” Lincoln apologised. He wanted to ask Holly more about it, but decided now with Eve present it wasn’t the best time to do so and let it go.All too soon the ride was over. He wished they lived further away so that he could have spent more time with them.“Please come around soon, I know Mom and Maggie would love to see you while you are in town.” Lincoln asked Holly. What he didn’t tell her, was that it was he who would love to see her while she was in town, but saying such things would be inappropriate, and he wasn’t sure that Holly would care if she knew it was him who wanted her around so he played the only card he had.Maggie got out of the car after glaring at her brother, she couldn’t help it, he was being such an idiot. Their mother would in fact love to see Holly again, but Lincoln and his fiancée were staying at the house. Why would Holly want to be around either one of them given their history. But she kept her mouth shut, she didn’t want to fight with her brother, or upset Holly and Eve.“I will think about it.” Holly replied, but she was not sincere. She already knew she would be avoiding Lincoln at all costs. She had been lucky tonight, he hadn’t figured out who Eve was to him but how long would that last? The only reason she was going to allow Maggie to follow her into the house was so that she could beg her not to say anything to him when she got home. Things should be left as they were, It was what was best for everyone.Lincoln bid the three of them goodnight with a heavy heart and left. As he drove away he found himself feeling a little jealous, he wished he had been able to stay like Maggie.Maggie silently followed Holly and Eve into Holly’s mother’s house.Kathy blinked in surprise when she saw Maggie walking through the door with Holly. She did not think her daughter would have sought out her old friend. Seeing the girls together again, brought her so much joy, she felt like she might cry.“Maggie, what a pleasant surprise.” Kathy couldn’t hold back her smile. Maggie was like a second daughter to her, keeping Holly’s secret had been hard. Hopefully, she would not have to keep it any longer.“It seems to be the night for surprises.” Maggie answered, glancing at Eve.Kathy understood the implication but did not answer.Holly knew how smart Eve was, and also what a good eavesdropper her daughter could be. She turned to her friend,“Please wait until I have her in bed.” Holly whispered. She would answer any questions Maggie had, as long as she kept her secret. Not just from her brother, but from their daughter as well.Maggie was patient enough not to push the issue, she believed her friend was a good person. Whatever decisions Holly may have made, she would have had good reason for them. She would hear her out. If she wanted to have a relationship with her niece, it was also probably not a good idea to push Holly away right now. Maggie simply nodded to show her understanding and Holly sighed in relief. It was a massive weight lifted from her shoulders.Kathy ever the saviour in any crisis said, “Hey Eve, should we watch a Christmas movie? I have the fireplace going, I can make popcorn and hot chocolates? Hm what do you say?”Eve’s blue eyes lit up. She loved her grandmother’s hot chocolates. “Will you use little marshmallows?” She squealed joyfully.“Uhm it’s not hot chocolate without little marshmallows.” Kathy smiled sweetly at her granddaughter.“Mommy doesn’t like them.” Eve reminded her grandmother. Holly thought marshmallows tasted a little too sweet.“Well, I love them.” Maggie announced. She couldn’t help but think to herself, and so does Lincoln. Maggie wondered; how much she might have in common with her niece.Kathy left the girls to pick a movie while she got the treats she promised ready.“Would you like to pick the movie?” Maggie asked Eve.“Mommy always watches The Grinch with me at Christmas time. Do you like The Grinch?” Eve asked Maggie sweetly.Holly and Maggie watched The Grinch every year during the holidays when they were children. Maggie still did even now that Holly wasn’t there to watch the film with her.“You did that with her?” Maggie looked at Holly, she felt so sentimental about it. It made no sense, but it made Maggie feel as if, even though she had never met the girl, she still had a part in her life, even if it were only in a tradition the child had not even been aware of.“Of course.” Holly could see how much it meant to Maggie in her teary eyes. Holly watched the movie to feel closer to her friend whom she dearly missed. In some ways it felt like it brought the three of them closer together, even when they were so far apart.Dabbing the tears from her eyes, Maggie told Eve, “I love The Grinch. Your mother and I used to watch that together in this house when we were little girls.”“Is that true, Mom?” Eve looked up at her mother curiously.“Yeah, Maggie and I were best friends. We did everything together” Holly explained.“Is she not your friend anymore?” Eve wondered why she had never met her mommy’s friend.“Of course, we’re friends.” Maggie quickly told Eve. At least she wanted to be Holly’s friend, but maybe Holly didn’t want to be hers anymore. The thought of it still stung after all this time.“Yes, honey, Maggie is still my best friend.” Maggie was grateful to hear Holly say such things.“Then why don’t we see her?” Eve asked her mother. Her mother never brought anyone by the house.“Because she lives here, and we live so very far away.” Holly felt guilty, she hated that she was lying to Eve after she promised that she wouldn’t, but what else could she say ?Eve understood. After all, she only got to see Grandma on special occasions like Christmas and birthday’s because they lived so far away.“Here we go, girls.” Kathy returned with a tray full of hot chocolates and four bowls of buttery popcorn.“Oh, I thought you would have the movie started.” Kathy remarked.“We were just deciding what to watch.” Holly told her mother as she took the tray from her and set it gently down on the coffee table.“I thought that would be obvious.” Kathy stated. “The Grinch.”“That’s what I said.” Eve said happily. She was so excited that her mom got to see her friend again. She worried about her sometimes. After Eve fell asleep, Holly carried her of to bed. It was a struggle, Eve wasn’t as little as she once was, but still Holly managed to flick back the corner of the quilt and lay her daughter gently on her bed. She then carefully removed her socks and shoes and tucked her in. Eve stirred but Holly was able to quickly lull her back to sleep with a soft hum. When she was satisfied that her daughter would not wake, Holly placed a gentle loving kiss on Eve’s little forehead and smiled at her sweetly. For the hundredth time today, Holly thought herself lucky.Ever so gently as to not make a sound, Holly pulled her daughter’s door shut behind her and sighed. The fear of change was crushing her. Holly stared at the bathroom with so much longing. She wanted to lock herself in there until Maggie grew impatient with her and left. But Maggie had been careful not to say anything in front of Eve, something she was grateful for. Holly knew how desperate she must have been to say something, she m
By the time Maggie got home it was very late, she was surprised to see her brother waiting up for her. “Link, you scared the crap out of me.” Maggie scolded her brother who sat in the kitchen without the light off, the creep. “You were gone a long time.” Lincoln stated ignoring her comment. He tried going to sleep, but when he laid down next to his fiancée, and he was thinking of Holly, he felt guilty, so guilty that he couldn’t go to sleep. So, he came down here to the kitchen to wait for Maggie. “So,” Maggie huffed, she was annoyed with her brother. She may have sworn to Holly that she wouldn’t say anything to him, but that didn’t mean she didn’t want to. Right now, it was hard for her to be near him, she was so angry with him. Because of her brother she missed out on five years with her niece, and Holly had to raise her baby all alone, and whilst in college. Not to mention he had been a total pig. “So, I am curious, she was my friend too, how is she?” Lincoln did not understand
When Holly went to bed that night, everything that had happened in the five years since she left home, played over and over again in her mind, starting with the night she spent with Lincoln. At first, it had been a dream come true, although in her dreams when she tasted his lips, they had never tasted of whisky. But he had said everything she had spent so many years longing to hear. He told her, how much he liked her, confessed that if he had known how she felt about him that he would have taken her in his arms sooner and she had believed him. But that is where the dream ended, and reality took hold. She went to college and studied nursing like she always wanted. She was on a full ride scholarship, and was lucky that she did not have to worry about tuition as long as she worried about her grades. Her mother took on a second job to give Holly the money she needed to move into her own apartment. A baby and a shared dorm room just weren’t a good mix. The campus where Holly studied had a
Kathy was feeling tired, knowing how she got sick in the afternoon she decided it was time for bed. It was barely midday, Holly worried about her mother and how fast she was declining lately. Eve was such a good girl; she was doing her best to keep quiet so that her grandmother could sleep. Knowing that Eve however was getting bored, Holly decided to take her out for the afternoon. She got Eve dressed up, and styled her hair in beautiful little pig tails that she then platted. While Holly got ready, she put on a movie for Eve to keep her distracted. It didn’t take Holly long to put on a nice dress and some light make up. Her hair was a little more stubborn, she had forgotten to pack her conditioner when she left home, and so she had been using her mothers, it had not been cooperating however with her hair. Once she managed to get it looking cared for at least she put on a pair of earrings, she slipped cute little bell studs in her ears in honour of the festive season. “Come on, Eve
“Holly, are you okay?” Kathy stuck her head in the door. She was concerned about her daughter, it wasn’t like her to hide out in her room. Holly lifted her head and looked at her mother and mouthed the word, “NO,” and put her head back down. She most certainly was not okay, but she did not wish to talk about it in front of Eve. Knowing now was not the time to push, Kathy simply said, “Get some rest, baby.” And quietly shut the door. Her daughter appeared fine this morning, whatever was troubling her now Kathy was convinced it had something to do with Lincoln. Given her and Holly’s disagreements about how to handle her situation in the past, maybe she wasn’t the person Holly felt like talking to right now, so she decided to call in reinforcements. Kathy called Maggie from the land line and asked her to come over. Maggie was currently busy, but promised to come over as soon as she could. While she waited for Maggie to come over, Kathy busied herself making an array of sandwiches a
Holly took Eve inside and put on a movie for her. Kathy was resting in front of the fire where she usually sat. Holly made the three of them some popcorn and joined her daughter on the couch. For a while, they sat in silence and watched the movie together. Holly watched Eve and was thankful that she had such a happy and healthy little girl. “I love you.” Holly said as she kissed her daughter on the head. Eve smiled back at her mother and kissed her arm and replied. “I love you, Mommy.” Holly loved to hear her daughter say that. The words always sounded so much sweeter when Eve said them. Thinking about what Maggie said, Holly decided to ask her daughter as casually as possible as to avoid upsetting her. “Do you ever wonder about your daddy?” Kathy stopped rocking in her chair, her daughters question caught her by surprise, she wanted to hear what Eve had to say. “I mean sometimes.” Eve looked sad but didn’t say anything more. “Do you want to talk to Mommy about it?” Holly wa
It surprised Holly to feel so comforted and welcomed, it didn’t feel any different then it did before she left. She knew they were good people, but she was certain what she had done would have been beyond their forgiveness, and yet here they were treating her with all the love, warmth and kindness they always had. The Smith house still felt like a home to her, it both put her mind at ease and made her extremely sad. The decision she made to keep Eve to herself had never felt more wrong then it did right now. Seeing them all together painted a very vivid picture of all the things she had stripped from Eve and her second family. Holly helped Keith, Patricia, Maggie and Lincoln carry the food in. Eve had wanted to help too, so Patricia let her carry in a few smaller items inside such as the napkins. Holly who felt right at home, chatted freely as she helped place the food around the dining table. Sasha didn’t know this girl but she hated her, she viewed her, and her daughter as a threa
“Hey, Mom, look who I brought home with us.” Holly announced as she entered her mother’s home. Maggie and Eve had manged to get the tree up, and the decorations out while she was gone. Kathy, who was getting tired quickly these days, had already retired to her rocking chair in front of the fire. “Oh, Patricia, how wonderful to see you.” Kathy made the effort to get out of her chair and embrace her old friend. She was overjoyed to have the house so full again. It had not been the same since Holly had left. This was turning out to be better than she could have ever imagined. “It’s wonderful seeing the girls together again, isn’t it?” If anyone were to understand how Kathy felt, it would be Patricia. “It really is.” Paticia was relieved to see Maggie so happy to have her friend back. She was over the moon when she returned home in the early morning hours after her trip to the Christmas market. When Lincoln had told her where Maggie was, she just had to wait up for to hear all about
Epilogue part three. Holly was in the bridal room getting ready for her big day. Her hair was styled to perfection, her makeup had never looked so flawless, and her stunning tulle wedding dress was more than she could have ever dreamed of. All day she had Patricia, Maggie and Eve fawning over her as they helped her get ready, but she had asked for a moment alone, and so they had left to gather the bouquets and check that everything was in order. Holly was missing her twins desperately, today had been the first time she had spent any amount of time away from them. As if he could read her mind Lincoln stepped into the large bridal tent, the vineyard had loaned them. In the corner of her eye Holly noticed the fabric moving and turned to talk to who she assumed would have been Maggie, but when she saw who it was she panicked just a little. “Lincoln.” Holly felt dismayed by his arrival. “You’re not supposed to see me until it’s time.” She tried to hide herself behind the large mirror in
epilogue part two. Maggie was resting in her room, when Doctor Evans knocked on the door. “What do you want?” She said coldly. “I went to see the baby.” Joel walked into the room and looked at the window. The car park wasn’t a very good view, but it was a distraction and that helped. “You did?” Maggie was surprised but mostly annoyed. “And why would you do that?” “When I walked into your delivery room yesterday, I didn’t want to be anywhere near you. But then I had no choice, I couldn’t just leave you without medical care, and I told myself that it was fine. I hardly knew you, I could detach and treat you like you were any other patient. But then I held that baby and she is so cute, and I don’t know how else to explain it, I felt proud for some reason. She took my breath away. I tried to forget her, forget you, I went outside and I got in my car, I was ready to leave but I couldn’t turn it on. Instead, I turned right back around and I found her in the NICU, and I just stood there
Epilogue. Part one. The storm was raging out of control. Hail belted against the glass as Holly drove Maggie to the hospital. Holly hated driving in this type of whether, but she had no choice. The storm had knocked out the cell phone towers and the emergency lines were so busy, that nobody was answering her. She couldn’t even call Lincoln who was at work, to let him know she was coming in. “I can’t be, I can’t be in labour.” Maggie cried as she screamed again as yet another contraction rippled through her body. “I am only thirty-two weeks, Holly.” Holly knew how afraid Maggie must be. Once the storm hit a few days ago, Holly had begun to fear herself that this would be the position she was in, she was thirty-eight weeks pregnant with her twins, she was sure she was going to give birth before she could make it to her scheduled C section at the end of the week. She was just glad that Maggie had been at her house when this happened and not somewhere all alone. “I know, Maggie, I know
Maggie, Eve and Lincoln were all eating the breakfast at the table together. “Why are you so upset, Daddy?” Eve asked, she had noticed that her dad had hardly eaten a thing, he had mostly frowned at his breakfast this morning. “Oh, nothing, sweety. Why don’t you go and get your bag and shoes, it’s almost time to leave.” Lincoln said. They knew such blessings wouldn’t happen often, but Holly and Lincoln’s shift actually started at the same time today, that meant they would be able to take Eve to school together this morning. “Okay, she is out of the room, now spill.” Holly dropped her fork and waited for Lincoln to tell her what was wrong. Eve wasn’t the only one to notice his broody demeaner. “I’m just not looking forward to seeing Evens at work today. I hate that I will have to see him all the time. I just, I can’t fathom it, okay so he doesn’t love Maggie and they aren’t going to be making any trips to the chapel anytime soon, that part I get, not everyone is as lucky as we are
Maggie chose to go bowling. Sure it was a little unconventional to celebrate life changing news in a bowling ally but it was something they had used to do often when Maggie and Holly were children. Maggie thought that as she was celebrating having a baby, it might feel nice to be a little childlike, one last time. Eve thought it sounded like great fun, and so everyone else kind of just went along with it, they looked out of place, all dressed up in their evening wear while most other patrons were wearing casual clothing, such as old T-shirts and jeans. Despite how well the rest of the night had gone, Holly was utterly exhausted when she collapsed into bed, but somehow she managed to stay awake while she waited for Lincoln. Eve had fallen asleep in the car on the way home, so he had carried her into bed. Tired himself, Lincoln did not bother to undress, he simply kicked of his shoes and climbed into the bed with Holly pulling her close to his chest. “So, what happened last night, yo
The rest of the day was rather uneventful, for Lincoln at least. Poor Holly was left to suffer for the rest of shift alongside Emily, whose mood continuously soured. It was so bad that by the end of the day Holly had considered going to Director Julain about it. However, she was worried about starting drama in the department when she was still so new. It made Holly miss her old hospital, where the nurses while often too busy to chat, still remained friendly with one another. Checking the clock once again, she had done this too many times in the last hour wondering if her shift was almost over. Holly was relived to see that it was indeed finally time to clock out. As she was walked past the director’s office, he called her name, surprised but not anxious she stopped to see what he wanted. Emily squeezed past her as she entered the room and that is when she started to have a bad feeling about this. Did she tell the director she had compared her to a blow-up doll? “Holly, how are you?
Holly was at work; she was filling in some patient charts when a couple of her new coworkers joined her at the nurse’s station. “Have you heard about the new surgeon that starts tomorrow?” Sarah gossiped excitedly. “He’s supposed to be like super well-built and very good looking, like as if you need to be when you’re a surgeon. They are even giving him his own department. Like who gets that straight out residency?” Sarah bragged. “Yeah, I heard he turned down a place at Mass Gen, who turns down mass gen, and for here? He must be crazy.” Emily, another nurse whispered back. “I also heard he’s engagement recently fell through, who knows, maybe he’s looking for a rebound.” Sarah smirked. Holly felt uncomfortable; they were obviously talking about Lincoln, but what did she say, and why didn’t he tell her they were going to be giving him his own department to run? That was insane. She knew foetal surgery was rare, and surgeons like Lincoln were a gold mine, maybe she should have expe
As soon as Lincoln finally let her up again, Holly got on her phone and called Maggie. She answered it on the first ring.“I can’t believe you let him kick me out of the house.” Maggie complained as soon as she answered the call. “Sorry, I tried to go after you, but he was a little excited.” Holly apologised. “I love you Holly, but he is my brother, that’s disgusting.” Maggie shivered. She was happy they were together but it was going to take some getting used to. “Sorry” Holly laughed. “Okay, so did you tell your parents? What did they say? Have you called your baby daddy yet? Is he on board? How did it go? Well, I hope.” Holly didn’t know what to ask first. “I haven’t told them yet, I am hiding out in my room. I know it’s kind of childish and whatever I don’t care, but I was kind of hoping you and Lincoln would be there when I tell our parents, you know, to buffer some of the questions they are going to have for me otherwise, especially if you announce your pregnancy as well, th
Holly was so happy to see him she immediately forgot what they were doing. “What are you doing home?” She squealed and ran over to give him a hug, he pulled her in for a kiss. Lincoln was kind of annoyed that Maggie was here, he hadn’t kissed Holly in a week, his hands we’re desperate to wonder, she was killing the mood, but he couldn’t say that, so he pulled back. “Is Eve still up?” He asked hoping to catch her, he didn’t get to call her because he was on the plane, but he wanted to hear all about her big day. “No, you just missed her, she asked to wait up for you, but I didn’t think you would be back until morning and it’s a school night so said no, now I feel bad.” Holly explained. “Oh, well how did your day go? Wasn’t too hard on you, was it?” Lincoln asked. “It was different, but that’s not what is important, did you pass you boards?” Holly asked excitedly. “I don’t know yet, the results won’t be posted for another few hours, but I am confident.” Lincoln told her. “Hey, M
