I tensed up, squinting my eyes.

“A sacrifice?” I reiterated.

“To the fae lord?” Carys knit her brows. “W-what kind of sacrifice? Why me? And… my mother… why… how… I don’t…”

“I am sure you remember why uncle Logan didn’t allow your mother to come close to you when he wasn’t around. Everything she did to you and your body, the abuse and pain you went through in your childhood, was how your mother prepared your body and soul to act like a bond receptor.” Joshua reminded Carys.

Her heartbeats shot up; her chest heaved faster at his words as she curled her fingers over her dress on her knees. An unsettling fear took over her. I knew she was reliving those triggering memories from her childhood in her head.

“I know it’s hard to believe, Carys. All these people think they are saving the world by doing what they are doing right now. Your mother was no different. Actually, she was colder than all of them combined. But none of them realize they are under some kind of sick control. M
