120. The chosen one

[Kian]

I stared at Calista with wide eyes for a few seconds, unable to move, unable to believe what I had just heard. My body burst into a wave of cold prickling sweats.

“Kian. Son… you aren’t breathing. Breathe.”

Calista’s voice echoed in my hollowness, drowning away all the other sensations and noises of my visceral body. It took my mind more concentration and energy to understand what she was trying to tell me.

I know she said something else, but what I heard was—

‘You’ll breathe for him. Your every breath will soon be his.’

Frowning, I glared at Calista. Her face turned into a mere blur of black line. Meanwhile, her eyes and lips were bright red, like fresh blood.

I blinked and shook my head, but her head moved like some creepy doll. Her smile grew louder and louder, as if it would consume me whole.

The convulsions swarming within me pushed me to my feet. Gulping hard, I panted and stepped away from her. My lungs were suddenly out of air, as if I had just finished an endless race.
