DECLAN’S POV

It can’t be. There’s no way in hell that we’re mated to an omega.

My heart pounded in response to the matebond and I knew that even my brother could feel it too because there was confusion written all over his face.

My wolf shifted uncomfortably and yet ever so delicately as it growled the same words over and over again that sounded like pain to my ears.

‘Mate! Mate! Mate!’

My blood boiled in anger and inside me, I was seething with rage as I glared down at her and the fear, stark and evident, glistened in her eyes as she shivered violently.

“I— I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, I won’t—” she fumbled her words as she apologized with her head low and tears already trickling down her cheeks.

Seeing her cry should have no effect on me but I could feel some part of me softening and that’s the last thing I could ever allow.

The guards wasted no time dragging her away to punish her and as my eyes followed her, my wolf wouldn’t stop ringing the fact that she was my mate to my hearing.

“This is absurd!” Ryan’s voice pulled me out of the thoughts I was lost in and I looked up to see his pupils moving from one place to another, something it does only when he is angry.

He looked livid and his fist clenched as his teeth gritted with anger. Neither of us could believe that we’ve been mated to an omega slave and not just an omega slave, a witch.

Also, we knew nothing about her, we never met her before and the most ultimate disgrace of it all is the fact that she had no root.

The moon goddess must be playing some kind of sick joke.

“We’re not accepting her, right, Declan?” Ryan’s voice put a halt to my thoughts and I immediately turned to face him.

“Of course not!” I said firmly, the disapproval evident in my voice and I made sure that my eyes carried the weight of the anger I was feeling within me.

We definitely can’t accept her.

“It would bring disgrace to us if we ever accept her as our mate!” I added through gritted teeth, “We’re going to reject her when the time is right.” I added and Ryan immediately agreed.

“Although—”

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” I asked, cutting him off and I saw the side of his lips curving into a maniacal smile, one that emphasized what we were thinking.

“We don’t reject her,” Ryan started, a sly grin spread across my face and a devilish smirk played on Ryan’s lips, “she’s a maid, no one cares about her.” He continued, further riling me up.

“We make her suffer before finally rejecting her.” I finished for him and he immediately agreed as we both threw our heads back, laughing at our scheme.

She had the audacity to think she could ever be mated to us. She has to suffer for being lowly and then our mate.

Pushing the thought of the lowlife maid we’d encountered to the back of our minds, we went on with the party, enjoying the rest of it like we’d intended from the very beginning.

The party was filled with lots of glamorous activities and it was fun having everyone at our beck and call, making sure they didn’t aggravate us.

But the more we tried to enjoy the party, the more odd I felt. It was the kind of feeling that’s similar to loss but I knew we hadn’t lost anything today.

My heart ached and as I tried to throttle the feeling, it only hit me full force. I’d thought that I was the only one going through it until I saw the beads of sweats on Ryan’s forehead.

He’s feeling the same pain.

“Are you guys okay?” A familiar feminine voice caused me to raise my head and standing before us was our best friend, Kayla.

She was more like the anchor of the party and she was the one who made sure that we never lacked anything.

Kayla was the beta’s daughter and since we all grew up together, everyone, including my brother and I, had thought she was going to be the one who ends up being our mate.

“We’re good.” I responded quickly before pulling Ryan away to greet our guests and other alphas that made it all the way here. The pain became even more acute and it was as though someone had stuck a burning dagger in my heart.

What the fuck is this feeling?

“Alpha Declan, Alpha Ryan!” A masculine voice called from behind us and we looked to see that it was Alpha Mike, an alpha from a neighboring pack.

“It’s a great party,” Alpha Mike complimented and I forced a smile as Ryan responded, I’d tried to ignore the feeling by talking about pack duties with Alpha Mike.

“Even the pack is booming better than usual and it seems like everything is going according to the moon goddess’ wishes.” He added and I nodded.

“Well, it would be a shame to not do what the moon goddess asks,” I said, clearing my throat that felt extremely dry even though I was holding a wine glass and drinking from it, “Also—”

“Can I have a moment of your time, Alphas?” I was interrupted and the rest of my words remain unsaid as I looked to see the priestess.

“I’ll give you space.” Alpha Mike said respectfully before leaving Ryan and I alone with Sofia, the pack priestess.

The pack has a very high regard for her because whatever she said is said to be directly from the moon goddess and she was also said to have dined with the moon goddess before in the spirit realm.

Whatever she predicts doesn’t go without coming to pass and that’s why pack members give her the same amount of respect that can be given to Alpha Kings.

“What is it, Sofia?” I asked with a smile plastered on my face, “a message from the moon goddess?” I questioned and she nodded.

Her facial expression remained the same and now that I think about it, never in all my years of living have I seen Sofia smile, laugh, cry or experience sadness.

She always had a neutral expression that made it difficult to read her mind. She's an unpredictable person and that’s probably why the moon goddess chose her.

“Yes,” Sofia’s voice was firm and strict as she turned her back against us and moved to a more secluded area.

Ryan and I knew better than to question her so we just followed her until she stopped walking and finally turned to look at us with the kind of eyes that spelt doom.

“You’ve met your mate,” she said and it was more of a statement than a question and so intense of answering, we remained quiet and let her keep talking.

“You need to have her by your side,” Sofia went on, “she’s the key to a lot of things that’s to come and not having her by your side will bring you doom.” She finished and I laughed.

“You’ve known us long enough to know that we’re not scared of anything, so you can be rest assured as no doom will be coming to us.” I assured her.

“You—”

“My brother is right,” Ryan was quick to swoop in, “there’s no way we are going to spend the rest of our lives with a lowly omega maid and that’s why we’re going to reject her.” He explained.

“Your stubbornness,” she snarled, “the mistake you’re about to make is what’s going to lead to the death of either one of you.”
