Lily's POV

I spun around, my heart still racing from the discovery, and there she was—Sybil, standing in the doorway. Her arms were crossed, and her eyes narrowed as she took in the scene. My heart pounded in my chest as I quickly stuffed the papers back into the drawer.

"What are you doing in here?" Sybil asked, her voice cold and suspicious.

For a second, I was frozen. My mind raced as I searched for an excuse, anything to cover up what I was really doing.

“Hmmm…nothing” I said ending on a fake laugh.

“I... I was just looking for some documents,” I stammered, forcing a casual tone.

“Cole said something about needing the contract for the house, and I thought I’d help out.”

Sybil didn’t move. Her gaze lingered on me, sharp and calculating. She didn’t believe me; I could feel it in the air between us.

I swallowed hard, keeping my expression neutral, trying to stay calm. "I couldn’t find it though," I said, stepping away from the desk, hoping she’d let me pass.

“Okay…yyy…y,” she said, eyeing me up, a hint of doubt lacing her words. She took a step forward, blocking the doorway slightly, her eyes never leaving mine.

“You sure everything’s okay? you seem really flustered.”

I forced a tight smile, shrugging. “Yeah, everything’s fine. Just helping Cole with some things. No big deal.”

She stayed silent for a moment, still not moving from the doorway. My wolf, Allegra, stirred inside me, itching to break free, to react. But I couldn’t let her. Not yet.

Finally, Sybil stepped aside. "Alright," she said slowly, her voice still full of suspicion. "If you say so."

I nodded, brushing past her quickly, hoping to put as much distance between us as possible before she started asking more questions. My mind was spinning as I walked down the hallway. I had to be more careful. If Sybil was already this suspicious, then who knew what Cole would do if he found out what I had seen?

Sybil found Cole in the living room, pacing by the fireplace. He turned when he heard her footsteps, his face etched with worry.

“We need to talk now!” Sybil said, her voice low and anxious.

“What happened,” Cole replied

 “She was in your office.”

Cole’s eyes widened. “What?” He stepped toward her, his voice dropping to a frantic whisper.

“Did she see anything? Did she say what she was doing?”

“She made up some excuse about looking for house papers,” Sybil said, crossing her arms again.

“But something was off. She looked... spooked.”

Cole cursed under his breath, running a hand through his hair. His heart was pounding, his thoughts racing. If Lily had seen anything, anything at all that tied him to the attacks, they were both in serious trouble.

“We have to figure out what she knows,” Sybil said, her voice tense. “If she’s seen something…”

Cole paced the room, his mind scrambling to come up with a plan. “She couldn’t have seen much,” he muttered. “Everything important is hidden away. But if she suspects something, she’ll keep digging.”

Sybil nodded, biting her lip. “And if she finds out the truth, it’s over for us.”

Cole stopped pacing, turning to face her. “We have to make sure she doesn’t.

“Lily’s smarter than we thought,” Sybil said, her voice cutting through the tension. She sat on the edge of the couch, leaning forward slightly.

“If she’s already snooping, it’s only a matter of time before she figures everything out.”

Cole stood by the window, staring out into the night, his mind racing. "I didn’t think she’d ever suspect anything," he muttered, more to himself than to Sybil. "She trusts me. She trusts us."

"Yeah, well, that’s over now," Sybil said, her voice sharp. "What’s the plan, Cole? We can’t just sit around on our hands."

Cole turned, his expression dark. "I know. But we can’t act too fast either. She’s been careful. If we make a move and she’s already talked to someone…”

“Who would she talk to?” Sybil asked. “The pack? Lukas?”

Cole’s jaw clenched. “Maybe. If she knows anything about the attacks, she’ll go straight to him.”

Sybil shook her head, her frustration boiling over. “We should have dealt with her sooner.”

“No,” Cole snapped, his voice low and dangerous. “She’s still my wife. I can handle this.”

Sybil’s eyes narrowed. “Handle it how, exactly? She’s already onto us. Do you think she’ll just forget everything she’s seen?”

Cole turned away from the window, crossing the room with long strides until he was standing right in front of Sybil. “We don’t have a choice. We have to make sure she doesn’t talk to anyone.”

“And what if she does?” Sybil challenged, her voice rising. “What if she’s already put the pieces together? You think she’s just going to keep quiet?”

Cole’s hands clenched into fists. “ You aren't hearing me, we have to make sure she doesn't talk to anyone.”

Sybil’s lips twisted into a bitter smile.

“Before we do anything drastic, I’ll talk to her,” Cole said finally, his voice firm. “I’ll make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid.”

Sybil raised an eyebrow. “And if she won’t listen?”

Cole’s expression hardened. “Then we make sure she can’t.”

Sybil leaned back, crossing her arms. “And how do you plan to do that?”

Cole didn’t answer right away. He looked out the window again, his mind churning with possibilities, none of them good. He had underestimated Lily. She was stronger, smarter than he’d given her credit for. And now, she was a problem he needed to solve.

“We’ll do whatever it takes,” he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Sybil nodded slowly, her eyes gleaming with something dark. “Good. Because if she exposes us, everything we’ve worked for is gone.”

Cole didn’t respond. He didn’t need to. They both knew what was at stake. But as he stared out into the darkness, one thought kept running through his mind.

What if it’s already too late?
