Another night, another nightmare. I woke up once again with a start. To be fair, I had no right to call my blissful memories with Magnus a nightmare. But it always ended with him accusing me of betraying him.
Since I was up already, I decided to take a stroll in the garden and hope the scent of fresh leaves would lure out Silver. I was due for a run in the woods, but after yesterday's incident with Magnus, I didn't want to push my luck.“What's happening?“ I noticed activity in the house. I pulled aside one of the omegas in the pack house.I could tell she didn't want to talk to me, but I was still their Alpha's mistress.“Tell me.“ I commanded with a confidence I didn't feel.“Alpha Magnus wants to see everyone in the square.“ She said curtly before scurrying away.I could tell Magnus wanted me to be late for the meeting, so he could make a fool of me in public. I was once the only woman in his eyes. Tears welled up in my eyes at the unfortunate change in our relationship.I could sense the unease in the air. This was the first time Magnus had called a meeting since the beginning of his reign as Alpha of the Brown Pack.“I wonder what he wants to say.““What if he wants to use us to take revenge for his exile?“ One woman panicked.“He has killed Alpha Lucas and his supporters, hasn't he? I doubt that's the case.“ Her friend shut her train of thought down.“What if…” Whatever she was going to say remained unsaid because Magnus chose that moment to walk in with Jaxon. A hush descended over the place. As tradition demands, we all bowed before our Alpha.“Rise,“ he commanded. “I stand here in front of you as your Alpha. I was once exiled by the former Alpha, and I'm back here to take what is rightfully mine and to get justice for my parents.“He paused and looked around the square. “If anyone feels any type of way about my reign, let him speak now. He or she gets to challenge me.“Murmurings rose throughout the square.“Silence.“ Jaxon spoke up from behind him.“This is the only fair trial you'll get.“ Magnus continued. Everyone looked around to see if anyone was coming out. A tense minute later and no one came out.Magnus fixed his gaze on the warriors, silently daring anyone of them to challenge him with his blank eyes. None of them did.He cleared his throat and relaxed his shoulders. “If I hear or sense any form of rebellion against me, I won't hesitate to kill the offender and his immediate family.“ He declared, and I felt a chill settle over me.I wonder what Magnus had to endure during his forced time away to make him this ruthless. The Magnus I knew was the sweetest man, but this, this Magnus was one I didn't recognize. Those gray eyes of his used to be full of warmth and tenderness for me.After the meeting, I headed back to my room. It was either that or roam the grounds aimlessly. I didn't want to risk bumping into Magnus. As my rotten luck would have it, I saw him and his latest toy at the edge of the staircase. I tried to go back, but I guessed he sensed me behind them.“What have I told you about wandering around?“ His voice was hard, and his gaze was cold.“I…I'm sorry.“ My cheeks burned in humiliation. I could hear whispers, but I dared not look up.“Where are you coming from?““I was just outside, attending the pack meeting.“ I whispered. He looked at me hard as if to detect any trace of dishonesty.“Hmm, scurry along, mistress.“ He said the mistress' words tauntingly. I squeezed myself past them and hurried to my room.Once I got up the stairs, the tears I've been trying so hard to keep at bay flew down my cheeks.“Hey, where are you running to?“ I was stopped with a pull of my arm. I looked up to see Jaxon coming out of his room. His cheerful look quickly morphed into something else as he saw the tears.“What happened? Magnus?“I couldn't speak so I just nodded.“Why do you let him treat you like that?“ He pulled me into his arms and I sobbed harder. It was not even the humiliation that hurt, but my stupid heart. My heart still ached for him. I was part of the reason he was like this. It hurts that we might never go back to the way we used to.“I deserve it.“ I pulled away from Jaxon. I didn't want to risk being caught in a compromising position with another man.“No, you don't…” he started to assure me, but I cut him off.“Thank you.“ I proceeded to my room.JAXON'S POVI watched the woman I hadn't stopped thinking about since I lay my eyes on her walking away from me. I could still feel the scent and feel of her stunning red hair in my hands. I wanted to hold her in my arms forever.I wanted to go after her to make sure she was okay, but the best part of me knew it was a bad idea. She was my friend's mistress. That automatically made her off limits to me. I wished it made it easier to stop me from thinking about her.I was going to make her fall for me, but how? Audrey was clearly in love with Magnus and, surely, Magnus had to feel something for her, because why else would he make her his mistress?Beneath all the hurtful remarks, I knew Magnus cared about her and if I was not in love with Audrey, I'd help them resolve their issues, but I was a selfish bastard who would rather keep her for himself.I didn't realize how long I had spent gazing longingly at Audrey's door until a maid called for my attention.“Alpha Jaxon?“ She tentatively touched my arm to get my attention. Christ, I had it bad for this woman. She made me lose my sense of awareness.“Hmm. Yes?““Alpha Magnus would like to see you in his study.““Okay. I'll be there.“ I watched the maid walk away before descending the stairs to see Magnus. I wonder if it was wise to ask him about Audrey.“Yo! I heard you're looking for me.“ I barged into his study without knocking just to get on his nerves. He looked up and glared at me.“Relax.“ I laughed, and he gave me a small smirk. “What do you want to see me for?““I want you to look over these security plans.“ He pushed a stack of paper my way.“Can I ask you something?“ I said nonchalantly.“Yep.““What's the deal with that mistress of yours? Audrey, right?“He stilled and dropped what he was doing.“Why do you ask?“CHAPTER SEVEN.MAGNUS' POVHis question caught me off guard. Why does he want to know about Audrey? I hope for his sake he wasn't getting any idea about Audrey. She was mine!“Why do you ask?“ I said in a hard tone.“Nothing.“ He tried to cover his curiosity with nonchalance, but I knew better. “I just want to know why you made her your mistress while you still sneak around with other girls."“What I do in my free time is none of your business.“ I set him straight. “We have an alliance. As long as I'm not doing anything to jeopardize our alliance, you'll keep away from what's mine. Audrey is none of your business.““Chill out, man!“ He laughed and flopped down on a seat. “It was a harmless question. I have a little sister, you know? She reminds me of my sister, that's all.““Hmm.“ I gave him no response after that. Audrey was the love of my life, there was no doubt of that. Yes, we were mates, but I'd like to think that we had a connection aside from the mate bond. I would still love
ALEXA'S POVTHE NEXT MORNING:The car dropped me off in front of a magnificent building. I assume this is the pack house. I was told I could find my brother here.“This is your stop.“ The driver muttered. I carried my things and alighted. As expected, I was greeted with stares. I am a beautiful woman and I pride myself on that fact.“Hey, you.“ I pointed to one of the omegas cleaning up leaves in the compound. He rushed over quickly. “Where is Alpha Jaxon?““I'll take you to him.“ He bowed and offered to carry my bag, but I'd rather my arms fall off than let his dirty paws near my bag.“Just take me to him.““He's in here.“ I nodded and shooed him off. I knocked and heard a gruff response. That was not my brother. I sashayed in, and I was immediately arrested by a pair of curious gray eyes watching me. For a moment, I lost my hearing and forgot to speak.Luckily, my brother came to my rescue.“Alex!“ He stood up from opposite the delicious man and hugged him. I robotically hugged hi
AUDREY'S POV. After the conversation I overheard, I locked myself in my room until I could think of a plan. Another part of me was hoping Magnus would send for me and explain himself, but he didn't.That night, I made a decision. I was going to leave Magnus. I won't ever stop loving him, but I am done being his doormat. I sought out Jaxon. He's the only person that can get me out of this hellhole. He's an Alpha too, so I'm sure he has somewhere I can stay hidden. “Audrey ? What are you doing here?“ He was visibly surprised to see me.“Can I talk to you?““Sure.“ There was no hesitation in his voice. I suspected he had feelings for me but this just confirmed it. He was the only one that actively made an effort to speak to me. “Come in.““I need your help,“ I said bluntly.“Anything. What do you need?““I need to leave this place.“ He went still for a few minutes.“What…what do you mean?““I mean I need your help with running away from this place. You're the only one that has enough r
AUDREY'S POV.“Magnus? Why is he calling you?“ I instantly went into panic mode.“Relax.““No.““Audrey, calm down. There's no way he's found out already.““Yeah?“He quickly parked the car before receiving his call.“Magnus, what's up?“I couldn't hear what he said, but he relaxed, letting me know that it was not what I was thinking.“No, she's okay with it. Yeah.“He dropped the call.“So?““It was just some pack business. He wanted to know if Alex was okay with the whole marriage shenanigan.“Oh, I shouldn't have asked. “Are you okay with it?“ I asked.“Yeah. I mean, they're both unmated, and they'll figure it out if they both ever meet their mates.““I see.“ “Plus, having a Luna would help solidify the alliance and let other packs know that he's not alone. It's a win-win for everyone.““Nice.“ Luckily, he stopped talking about it.*****Roughly 20 minutes later, we got to the house, and it could easily be missed if you weren't looking for it. “Here we are.“ He parked and retrie
MAGNUS' POV“It will be done soon. You can rest assured.“ I escorted one of the elders of the pack out of my office.“Thank you.“He came to remind me that I still don't have a Luna or a Beta. That was the wake-up call. I needed to stop thinking about Audrey. I buried myself in work instead. I sorted the affairs of the pack and made changes when necessary. The next thing to do now is to choose a Beta. That morning, I sent out a message to the people that a contest was going to be held in the evening to choose the Beta.Evening rolled in fast, and I could feel the excitement palpable in the air. I could see the different families prepping their candidates for the contest. They bowed as I took my seat and I could see them eyeing Alexa curiously as she took her seat beside me.“Aren't you going to introduce me?“ Alexa whispered.“I'm only going to introduce them to their Luna, and you're not the Luna.““Yet,“ She added. “I'm not the Luna yet.“ “Let's get this started, shall we? Let all
THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY“Such a great party, Alpha Magnus.““Thank you for inviting us.“ I recognized some of the people who came over to where I was standing with Alexa in my arms.“Magnus !“ A sweet old woman from The Blue Moon pack came over. “Mrs T. I didn't know you would make it.“ The delight was evident in my voice.“And you, dear, congratulations.“ She turned to Alexa. “Snatching the eligible Magnus before anyone. Good for you. I don't see your brother anywhere.““Oh. He had some things to take care of in the pack house.“ Alexa said, as politely as she could.“Hmm. Well, I'll see you later.““Speaking of your brother, he didn't tell me he had things to do. He just sort of disappeared into thin air.““Well, that's my brother for you. Always doing as he pleases.““Weird.“I want this party to be over soon, but werewolves will party until the last drop of alcohol and I don't see the alcohol finishing anytime soon. I paraded Alexa around and introduced her to everyone who looked imp
AUDREY'S POV“Good evening, Jaxon.““Hi, Audrey.“ He was exhausted, and he sounded like it.“Do you want to eat? I can throw something together.““No.“ He yawned. “Just sit with me a bit.““OK.“ I put something on the TV, so the silence wouldn't be uncomfortable. He scooted closer, so he was resting his head on my shoulder.“Do you want to talk about it?““It's nothing. Just the monotony is getting to me. Doing the same thing every day can be very tiring.““Tell me about it.“ I sighed.“What do you use to entertain yourself?““In the middle of nowhere?“ I teased.“Do you want to come live in the pack house then? We can lord it over people together.“ It was a subtle invitation, but I dodged it.“I don't know the first thing about lording it over people. I'd cry if they didn't do as I said. I don't think that's a good quality in a leader.““It isn't.“ He laughed. Our position was intimate, and we were speaking in low tones. Magnus' gray eyes flashed in my mind and I suddenly felt guilty
AUDREY'S POV. “Audrey?!“ I thought I heard Jaxon's voice. “Jaxon? What are you doing here?“ I was happy to see him because I was dreading having to walk back by myself. “I stopped by the house, and I saw that you weren't back, so I thought I'd come walk you back.“ “Thank you.“ “Let's go.“ “Oh, lest I forget.“ I dragged Paul to Jaxon. “This is Paul. He was incredibly supportive today.“ I gushed. “Alpha Jaxon.“ Paul bowed respectfully. Jaxon didn't say anything. I noticed what caught his attention—me and Paul hand in hand. I quickly dropped his hand. “Paul. Thank your grandfather for me when you see him, yes." “Yes, Alpha.“ “Now be a good little boy and be on your way.“ I frowned at his demeaning tone, but I said nothing about it.I couldn't take it, so I said, What's on my mind? “You didn't have to speak to him that way.““What?“ I could tell I caught him off guard. “Paul. I wanted to introduce you to him because he was so supportive today when he didn't have to be, but the
