CAPT. CULL POV 6 months before Harvest time.
I fight back a shiver of fear as I stare down the company of Rusckods soldiers fifteen yards in front of me. Their solid white eyes are drilling into me as if they are seeing straight through me to my fleeing men already down the hall and around the corner.
This is their second attack on our supply moon and we were gravely unprepared. This storage building doesn't even have a link screen.
"Bring it beasts," I growl as my grip tightens on my blades.
I refuse to draw my blaster. I will not die a cowards' death on this rock. I will kill as many of these bastards as possible while command gathers an available battalion. My men will be saved and that is all that matters.
"Acting tough, Shikaz. Too bad we can smell the fear rolling off of you," one calls out and I growl.
Fear isn't something to be ashamed of... It's how you handle the fear. That's what my Father taught me on my first hunt.
I smirk and hold up my left blade.
"Aye. I do fear the pain of death. But you all should be fearful as well," I growl before my thigh muscles bunch up and I rocket toward them.
I manage to slice four throats before a Rusckod gets lucky and cuts a chunk of flesh off of my right arm. When I feel the sting I dash backwards to keep them from getting a lethal blow in.
Four Rusckods choking on their own blood stare up at me from the ground and I give them a full smile. Fifty to sixty spaced out Rusckods isn't something to sneeze at, but get them all in an enclosed space like this...
I have a small chance of killing half of them.
Rusckods aren't as massive as their allied brethren. They typically run about the same size as Bronks. Their flesh is the same color as the Coks... It's their creepy eyes that set them about from every other species. The pupil less stark white eyes that see everything it seems.
"I thought you all had great eyesight," I tease while I caught my breathe discreetly.
Their large frames expand with anger and I grin again. My people are lean and tall, but we are some of the fastest beings in the galaxy. Tonight I will have to pit my people's speed against the Rusckods famous sight.
"Stop pretending to be winning this fight, runt," one growls and I look down at my torn brown skin.
My blood has already soaked my uniform and is making my grip slip on my blade. But that means nothing to me. Every second I buy my men is another life saved.
"I am still standing and four of your guys have bled out... I would say I am winning, asshole," I reply and he snarls.
Their fangs shine in the dim light and I take another deep breath. They will be prepared for a quick attack this time. I won't get as many if I do the same trick. This is it. Fight until I drop.
Three charge at me and my body tenses as time seems to slow down. Their tan hands armed with blades similar to mine slash through the air like swords, but I stay calm. I twist and deflect as many attacks as possible while slicing their arms and stabbing their torsos. When one of them falls another takes his place and the fighting continues. I can feel my body as my wounds grow more and more serious, but my mind isn't processing the pain correctly. My adrenaline is pumping too high for me to truly grasp how much blood I am loosing.
"FINISH HIM," one of them shouts in frustration, but that only makes me smile.
The ground is slick with Shikaz and Rusckod blood as we fight on. Slash after slash. Stab after stab before suddenly a hit to my right ear leaves my head spinning. My arms become noodles and I hear a victorious shout as a blade pierces through my stomach. Blood spews from my mouth as I laugh at them one more time. I have no idea how many I killed because my vision is dark now, but it doesn't matter. I can feel myself growing cold. To me I feel like a victor.
"CAPTAIN," someone shouts as my body falls backwards.
***** 3 hours later *******
"Wow," I breath while flexing my fingers.
I have never had a near death experience. I have heard from quite a few of my fellow soldiers how weird it is, but I didn't expect this. I really felt as if my soul separated from my body there at the end.
"Captian, thank goodness," medical soldier Cur says as the door to my room slides open and he sees me sitting up.
"That was a close one, sir," he says as he sits down in a chair across from me.
"How close," I ask and he exhales loudly before answering.
"Your pulse was barely there. A second later you would have been gone... Captain, do you realize how many of those bastards you took down? You are going in the history records for sure," Cur says and I look at him with raised eyebrows.
"How many," I ask trying to hide the smugness in my voice by examining my now healed arm.
"37. You single handedly annihilated half their company. When Commander Tranborn arrived with his battalion he felt as if they weren't needed. You saved every soldier on this moon. I heard your name has even been brought up for Harvest Champion," Cur says and my eyes shoot to his.
"Seriously," I question and he nods.
"Yes sir. I wouldn't tell you a lie. I am honored to serve under you. We were heavily outnumbered and you made sure we got a message out," Cur says while looking at me with clear admiration.
"It's part of being your Captain. I would do it again," I reply before standing and placing a hand on his shoulder.
He nods and smiles at me before I leave the room.
I need to report to high council that I am healed and ready to return to active duty. Attacks happen fast in this war. The moon shouldn't be attacked again, but I thought that after the first attack. The enemy must be desperate to deplete our supply lines and our moon has the strongest raw metal for our blades.
I crack my neck and press my transport button. Within seconds I am in the high council's main building. The secretary looks up from her desk and smiles.
"How may I help you," she asks and I step forward.
"Captain Cull. Shikaz. Injury report," I answer and she nods.
Her report screen pops up between us and she looks at me expectantly with her fingers ready.
"I am healed and 100% once again. I can report back to active duty," I state and she nods while typing, but as she enters my rank and name a beep sounds.
"Captain it looks like there is an active note on your file. Council member Hik has requested a meeting with you," she says and my stomach leaps as I hear the name of the council member who handles retirement.
"Is he available," I ask trying to keep my voice even and she nods.
"He is. I will beep him. Give me a moment," she replies before pressing another button.
"Councilman Hik, Captian Cull from planet Shikaz is here," she states and the clear button flashes green.
She stands up and I silently follow her to his office. When the door slides open she disappears and I am left with a grinning Makskin male staring at me from his desk.
"Come in Captain. I will pull up your file," he states and I enter with my back as straight as possible.
I have never come past the secretary desk. I have seen several council members in passing, but I have never had a one on one meeting with a member. My nerves are pulled tight as I sit down in one of his chairs.
"Well Captain your actions today are very commendable. It is my understanding you fought a company of Rusckods alone while your small group of men secured our resources and contacted a near by Commander for assistance," he states after reading the summary under my name.
"Thank you," I manage to reply as I try to keep my face neutral.
"No, thank you. You have served this galaxy well. Your name has been submitted for Harvest champion and I am pleased to say you have been selected. Your retirement is effective immediately," he says and my body freezes from shock.
His dark purple eyes watch my expression for a short second before he smiles.
"I know it is exciting and abrupt, but congratulations, Captain. Go get your things in order for your future mate," he says and I look at his smiling burgundy face.
"I... I... Thank you, sir," I manage to finally say before awkwardly climbing to my feet.
I am retired. I will be fighting in the Harvest tournament for a mate.
CAPT. CULL POV I nod once toward yet another elder staring at me before walking past him. Many have stopped me to congratulate me this morning, but I can not waste anymore time. I have an appointment to see the home I believe will be mine. It's description was perfect and so far none of the homes I have seen have been the one.I no longer have a transport bracelet strapped to my wrist. I am a retired soldier. I have to travel how most of my people travel, which takes some time.I smile to myself as I join the line at the communal teleport pad. My mind has wondered back to it's new favorite past time, my future mate.I keep imagining all the different colors of each planet. I have always found the more colorful people to be beautiful. Everyone here on Shikaz is the same boring brown as one another. We are the most uniform people. We all have dark green eyes. We all have brown skin. We all have straight black hair. We are all tall. It helps us during hunting. We can blend in with the
ZURI POVThe bright colors of the planet Kea don't seem to stop with their people or their rooms. The outside is just just as brightly colored. The trees, the grass, and every flower is just as bright and colorful as the Kea people themselves."Wow," Jia says as she looks around.Xiu and I don't say anything but our heads are on a swivel just like her's."Kea is the most colorful planet known. Zalu, a fellow correspondent, said her human female said it looked like a rainforest dipped in pain," Baalee says as she stops walking and allows us time to look around.I nod and smile at the analogy."That's a great way of describing it," I say quietly and Jia nods.We begin to move again and Baalee leads us to a rather large looking building."The other humans should be here already," she says as she presses the button to open the door. The door slides open almost immediately and I don't have to look very hard to spot the two small humans sitting with two female Keas. Baalee makes a beeline f
ZURI POV I swallow my large bite of fruit while trying to appear patient. Baalee is still trying to think of how she is going to explain the differences between the races and my anticipation is practically eating me alive. I never really thought about my future life partner. I just figured I would meet a guy someday that I liked. But having the choice narrowed down to such a small pool of guys is somewhat exciting, to say the least."Okay, I think I know what I want to say about each planet, but remember ladies not everyone falls under these exact descriptions. I just want to give you an idea," she says as she looks around at us with her red eyes. I quickly nod my head to encourage her to proceed and she smiles before taking a deep breath."Okay, here goes. The people from Vaal are called, Vaals. They are strong people who are very close to their families. They tend to have many children. Their planet is the largest out of everyone's. They have brown skin and dark brown eyes. Th
ZURI POV I glance at Baalee for a second before looking back at the hallway she is leading me down. She said she was taking me to a nice room that Harvest women normally use. The other girls will be in rooms in the same hall so I won't be far from them. Krystal has already spent the night in her room and she said it was lovely, but for some reason, I am still nervous. "Baalee, tell me more about Kea," I say to ease my sudden nerves. She smiles and her pointed teeth peek from under her top lip. "Alright. Well,... Kea has hosted the Harvest since its conception. My people are a kind and compassionate group. We tend to dislike violence, but we are not afraid of protecting ourselves or others. The actual planet is extremely colorful. Our soil is orange and our plant life is like the rainbow. Our water is blue like Earth's is... I'm not sure I can think of anything else. Is there anything specific you would like to know," Baalee asks after drawing her eyebrows together in a way tha
ZURI POV My body practically buzzes with anxious nerves as I continuously fidget under the covers of my huge bed. Finally I sigh and get up. There is no point in trying to sleep right now. Maybe some of the other girls are having a hard time too. Maybe we can get to know one another more.I grab the soft robe I found hanging in the bathroom and throw it on over my bedtime clothes. I wouldn't mind speaking more with Krystal or Fiadh, even Jia. I creep out of my room and when I do I hear giggles coming from the room next door to me. It has a one on it and I am sure it is Krystal's room. Xiu wouldn't be laughing that loud so Krystal and Jia must be getting to know one another.I smile to myself instantly. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought hanging out with each other was a good idea.I head for the door on the other side of me and raise my hand to knock. But before I can I get scared. What if this is Xiu's room? What if she tells me to go away? I hating feeling rejected. I shak
CULL POV "Capt. Cull, a visitor has arrived. She states she is your cousin. She is requesting a visit," Yson says as she comes into the main gathering room. I slowly open my eyes and look at her. I have been tired lately. Old battles and the deaths of countless friends have been haunting my nights making sleep hard to come by. So I have been hiding away ever since purchasing my new home. I haven't allowed anyone from my small family to properly congratulate me on becoming a Harvest Champion. Since my parents are gone, my only family left are my Aunt, her mate, and their daughter, Goma. (Go-muh) I should have expected they would confront me about not visiting them. "Please invite her in, Yson," I say as I stand up and straighten my new civilian clothes. My old uniform was dark blue and durable. These soft, breezy, brown clothes feel so strange against my skin. But they are what all males on Shikaz wear. Only the females dress in different colors. I will have to reacclimate my
ZURI POV I sigh a little before glancing at Baalee. She has been setting up things for tomorrow and I can't help but feel anxious as I see the elaborate collection of makeup and beauty tools she has set out in the bathroom. "Okay so run me through the schedule again," I say as I pull my legs up onto the couch. Baalee shoots me a smile before walking out of the bathroom. She elegantly positions her long body on the couch in front of me and I grow jealous for the hundredth time. Every female Kea I have met has been beautiful. The other races' females are probably the same way. Baalee studies my expression for a moment before she takes a deep breath. "Alright, tomorrow is of course day one. It is the most important in my opinion... (she shoots me a wink and I quickly look down)... The galaxy's females greet each other and socialize for a little bit over some snacks. Then the Champions and the Females dine and dance together. This is the only time you get to spend with the cham
ZURI POVAs we approach a set of blue sliding doors Baalee begins to slow down. She seems to be trying to buy us time and I am proven right when she begins to whisper instructions."When you enter they will announce you. Choose a table to sit down at as he is announcing you. Don't choose one close to the door. They will think you are easily intimidated. Walk with your head high. You are a glamorous female from Earth. Your comrades will arrive shortly and they will also be announced. You are the first to arrive so impress them," Baalee says in a rushed whisper just before the doors slide open.Baalee backs away from me with a smile on her face and I turn my gaze toward a massive room full of different colored people and tables."Ah the first human female has arrived, this is the stunning Zuri. She is twenty years old. She has dark brown skin and brown eyes. Her correspondent describes her as sweet, but strong willed. Please choose a table, Zuri. Your kinsmen will be joining you shortly,
ZURI POV MANY MONTHS LATER Fiadh blushes scarlet as Terrax shoots her a wink and I can't help but smile. My friend has blossomed into a full-blown rose under Terrax's care, and I am so happy for her. He killed her abusers and rescued her mother all in one night. He made her dream come true. He leaves the balcony and she turns her attention back to me. "Stop smiling Zuri. You are making me blush more," Fiadh says and I chuckle before sipping on the hot drink Fiadh's assistant brought me. "Sorry, I am just happy for you," I say, and she shrugs playfully. "I am happy for you too. We have perfect lives," Fiadh says and I nod. I miss my siblings sometimes, but I know they are happy where they are. I had the American government lady check on them a few months after I completed my bonding with Cull. All of them were doing well and didn't need me interfering in their lives. Besides, my family is already growing, so I need to focus on it, not them. "You don't think we need bab
ZURI POV Rated R I hum softly as we walk back into our quiet secluded home. Meeting with Cull's family was amazing. They welcomed me with open arms, and after I got over not knowing Cull's full name, the afternoon blossomed into a great evening. Kima and Goma made us food that tasted better than Peela's. I had two servings of the weird but delicious dinner. Cull and Goma bickered but quickly got over it. She then told me the yellow blouse I am wearing was picked out by her. All in all, it was a good visit. "You seem happy," Cull says in a gentle voice as he watches me. I nod before doing a sporadic twirl. "I am. Your family is wonderful. All the Shikaz people we met today were sweet. Our home is beautiful. I have nothing to ask for," I declare to the room and Cull moves closer to me. He catches my hands in his and quickly positions us in the way we were when we danced. "If you wanted to dance you should have told me," he whispers before beginning to lead me around the la
CULL POVWe step off the transport and Zuri wraps her hand around my arm. The sense of peace that overtakes my body as soon as her body reconnects with mine makes me grin.I love the way it feels to have her holding onto me. It gives me such a sense of purpose. Before the Harvest, I had lost my sense of purpose. I wasn't a soldier anymore, and I wasn't a true champion yet. With her on my arm and my lips tingling from our first kiss I have a purpose. I am Zuri's mate. I am her provider. I am her protection."Wow, so this is what a village looks like here," Zuri says and I look down at her for a second before looking out at the fifteen homes spaced evenly apart. The sidewalks that link them all look nice and there are planted flowers everywhere. The area is kept by the retired males who live here, so it is beautiful. The homes aren't large, but they are nice. Kima's mate wasn't a soldier like my father and me, so he couldn't afford what I have given Zuri, but he made a good living for h
ZURI POV I giggle as another small Shikaz child waves at us excitedly. Everyone we have walked passed has either bowed their head a little or smiled at us, but the kids seem unable to contain their happiness. Some have yelled out or pointed, while others have waved like we are a friend they haven't seen in ages. "Harvest champions are known by all. We will be public figures from now on. I purchased a secluded home so we wouldn't get exhausted from the attention," Cull says quietly and I look up at his handsome face. His eyebrows are slightly furrowed and his mouth isn't turned up into a grin like it normally is. He must think I don't like the attention his people are giving me. He is wrong. After the way the Froles and Makskins treated us at the tournament, their greetings make me happy. They are showing I am accepted."It doesn't bother me at all. I feel accepted by everyone," I say and he gives me a small smirk before leading me into another shop. "Champion Cull, Welcome to m
CULL POV Zuri's eyes tighten again and she bites her bottom lip. She seems so nervous as I show her our home and my heart is tearing. I want her to feel safe and comfortable with me, but so far that does not seem to be the case. She has looked uncertain since we walked out of the transport room. "This is the big room. I filled the closet with clothes for you. If you do not like them we can replace them. My cousin Goma helped select them all, so hopefully, you will like them," I say as I lead her into the room she will be sleeping in. "It's huge," Zuri says as she takes in the mass area of the room with wide eyes. "Yes. While our home only has three bedrooms it is still large. When a soldier retires, he is given a large sum of money, but when a Soldier is selected to be a Harvest Champion, they are given a fortune. We are also given money from the actual tournament... We are expected to live lavishly. So most champions have huge homes, staff, and any other accommodation we pleas
ZURI POV Happiness is coursing through my body like a drug. Fiadh, Krystal, and I are the only ones left. Some groups haven't even had a female chosen yet. I can't believe we were all scared about not getting chosen. "Captain Maxim, please select your female," the announcer says and I watch as another orange giant from Bronkark steps out of line. He heads for the Hassin females and holds out his hand toward Ceenu. "Ceenu of Hassin, please accept my hand," the rather quiet male says and the metallic beauty beams at him. "I accept, Maxim," she says back, and another happy couple takes their turn waving at the crowd. The cheers for them aren't as loud as when Xiu or Jia left, but I think that is because none of the other males hold the title of Gold. "Captain Kaipo, it is your turn next," the Kea says, and the Cok, who danced with Xiu during the first dance, steps out of line. He smiles as he walks toward the four remaining Makskins. He stops in front of Zor's underlings and ho
CULL POV"The time has finally come. Commander Garlof as the winner of the Harvest, you can select your mate first. Will the fifty-five females from all over the Galaxy, please come forward," the announcer says, and I grow eager to see Zuri in a different dress. I might not have placed well in the final brawl, but I did achieve eleventh place. I defeated Orson fast enough to place within the top 15 and I am proud of that. I should have no problem claiming Zuri as mine. I have heard her name tossed around by a few males but they all placed after me. "Would you look at those dresses? Don't they look beautiful," the kea asks as I search the line of females for the group of blue dresses. When I spot Zuri my chest puffs out in pride. She looks radiant. Her final dress is gorgeous. The big skirt and lace sleeves shout feminine. When her eyes connect with mine I feel utterly complete. Although she isn't technically mine yet I can't turn off my happiness. I know Zuri will accept when I a
ZURI POV"The time has finally come. Commander Garlof as the winner of the Harvest, you can select your mate first. Will the fifty-five females from all over the Galaxy, please come forward," the announcer says, and I take a deep breath. I am so nervous. It's just like walking out in front of the crowd for the first time again. All eyes will be on us, but this time, in the end, we leave with the male we will spend our life with. I won't be returning to my room to talk with Fiadh or Baalee. I will be someone's mate. We all begin to walk and our ballgowns sway with each step. I try to keep my eyes on Krystal's brown hair, but the difference in the arena drags my attention away. The battle-worn field we have seen every day is different. Now there is an even black floor covering the massive open space. The only remaining grass is roped off in the middle and looks untouched. "Would you look at those dresses? Don't they look beautiful," the kea asks the crowd, and the crowd erupts into c
ZURI POV The last of the beast fights were quite boring. I didn't have anyone special to watch and it was clear the champions knew how to handle each kind of beast in the tournament. I am honestly glad it's over. Now we can focus on the important part, getting our mate."The Final day of the Harvest has arrived. All champions that fought a beast have moved on. All may challenge one another to prove they deserve the top spot. The last man standing goes first as the Winning champion. The order after his pick will be based on the fastest beast kill time. Then we move on to the champions from days three and four who lost. The longer they lasted in their battle against the top contenders, the higher their ranking. May the strongest win," the announcer says, and the crowd explodes with excitement. The sound is so loud Fiadh places her hands over her ears. The males run out of their holding area in a line while waving out at the crowd happily. When I see Cull my stomach fills with butte
