I took a deep breath, controlling the anxiety within me, and dragged my feet to the emergency room to take care of the commotion among the interns. Meanwhile, I prayed in my deepest thoughts that the test wouldn't come back negative, pleading with all the gods to please not break Jack's heart any further.

But my pleas and the heaps of prayers I had made internally didn't seem to be heard.

We were given the papers late at night, and Jack, trembling with fear, handed them to me to review for him, as he couldn't bring himself to even glance at them. Opening the flimsy sheet with the information, I found the news that the chestnut-haired man feared so much. I gritted my teeth, angry at the cruelty of this universe that was always mocking us, and Jack raised one eyebrow, expectant for me to comment on the results.
