Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Pocket Candy
"Mom, I believe Mary only hurt me because she was confused. After marrying into the Madden family, she won't see me anymore. Maybe she won't trouble me again after that."

Yelena's tears fell in big, pitiful drops, but her thoughts betrayed her.

"You stupid old woman. What are you waiting for? Do it now! Reprimand her already!"

As if struck by a snake, my mother suddenly shoved Yelena away and shouted, "You… What did you just say?"

She trembled with rage, and her expression was dark.

She pointed at Yelena, and her finger was shaking. However, words failed her as she seemed on the verge of passing out from rage.

Yelena collapsed onto the floor. Her face was filled with anguish and innocence. "Mom, what's wrong?"

While she seemed concerned, she was already cursing in her mind.

"What is this old crone freaking out about? Is she losing her mind or something? Oh well, if she drops dead, even better! With only two loyal dogs left in the house, they'll be much easier to control."

My mother's chest heaved violently. Her eyes were red with fury.

Before I could enjoy more of the unfolding drama, a knock sounded at the door. An attendant announced that it was time to head to the hall.

Johnny helped steady my mother and rubbed her back to soothe her.

My father pointed toward the designer gown laid out on the sofa bed and ordered reluctantly, "Change into this and head to the banquet hall. Remember, from now on, your name is Mary Sterling."

Only then did I realize I was still wearing my fishing outfit.

Once they left, two elegant attendants entered the room. One quickly applied makeup, while the other helped me into the designer gown.

By the time I arrived at the banquet hall, my parents and Johnny were already mingling with the guests.

On the way, I picked up an interesting tidbit from Yelena's thoughts—the banquet was actually my engagement party with Ashborough's top bachelor.

However, five years ago, this so-called top bachelor became paralyzed from the waist down due to an accident.

Originally, Yelena was supposed to marry him, but she refused to marry a cripple. Plus, his mother was known for being ruthless.

This wasn't his first engagement either. His last two fiancees had mysteriously died shortly after they confirmed their engagement.

Yelena had long suspected that his mother, dissatisfied with his potential brides, had them quietly eliminated.

That was why she would rather expose herself as a fake heiress than marry him. She needed me to take the fall in her place.

Conveniently, my latest mission happened to be in Ashborough. Since she had sought me out, I might as well play along.

The banquet hall was filled with Ashborough's elite circle.

As for me, I needed to find the man with a wolf-head tattoo on his wrist.

I grabbed a glass of wine from a passing tray and observed the room. I wove casually through the decadent crowd.

Suddenly, a group of women, dressed in luxurious gowns but reeking of cheap arrogance, surrounded me. They eyed me from head to toe with blatant disdain.

"So, you're Yelena's sister, Mary?"

The one leading the charge was Cindy Brown, one of Yelena's closest friends.

"I heard from Yelena that when she found you, you were… fishing in a river?"

Cindy giggled and covered her mouth with exaggerated delicateness.

"Ugh. I can still smell the fish on you. You're so disgusting! This entire banquet is ruined now."

The others immediately took a step back, laughing as they huddled closer to Yelena. They dramatically fanned their noses as if the very air had been tainted.

Yelena, of course, hid behind them and watched the show unfold with gleeful anticipation.

Before I knew it, the group had maneuvered me into a secluded corner of the hall.

I swept my gaze over the group, then slowly and deliberately corrected them. "I was catching a sturgeon, an endangered species. Its cartilage and spinal marrow contain anti-cancer factors, making it highly valuable for academic research and economic purposes. In fact, every single person here is worth far less than that fish."The socialites bristled as if I had struck a nerve. They glared at me."Hah! Catching an endangered species? You must've been trying to sell it for money to survive. Oh, you poor, pathetic girl.""Just because you returned to the Sterling family doesn't mean you're a real heiress. A barnyard hen perched on a high branch doesn't get to be called an eagle. You'll never be on the same level as Yelena.""Exactly! It was Yelena's kindness and generosity that saved a stray like you from the slums. You should be thanking her on your knees right now."With that, a few of them reached out to press down on my shoulders.I grabbed two wrists, shifted my weight, and, u

The entire banquet hall fell silent as all eyes locked on the man in the wheelchair. Whispers spread throughout the room."As expected of Ashborough's top bachelor—even in a wheelchair, he's still undeniably handsome.""Mr. Madden has barely appeared in public over the past five years. He must be in worse condition than we thought.""Honestly, in this marriage between the Sterling and Madden families, the Sterlings are the ones climbing the social ladder here. Everyone knows the Maddens are at the top of Ashborough's business empire."As the guests applauded to welcome the Maddens, Yelena's inner thoughts surfaced again."Bullshit! Who dares say the Sterling family is climbing up? I'll have my idiot lapdog of a father buy out their company first thing tomorrow!"So what if Howard is good-looking? He's still a cripple who can't even stand, probably in more ways than one. If I had to marry him, I'd be a living widow, stuck to pleasuring myself with my hands for the rest of my lif

Yelena sidled up to Johnny and clung to his arm. She called sweetly, "Johnny."Johnny recoiled as if she were a venomous snake, then pried her hands off and stepped behind their parents for cover. Her thoughts echoed in everyone's mind once more."Has Johnny lost his damn mind too? How dare he ignore me? Does he have a death wish or something?"Frustrated, Yelena shot a look at Cindy and the others. She was silently ordering them to handle the dog for her.Cindy sneered back, then threw the counterfeit handbag Yelena had gifted her into the trash. Then, with the rest of her friends in tow, they flipped Yelena off before striding away together.Yelena was livid. She blamed everything on Lilian. If Lilian had not humiliated her by forcing her to handle the dog, no one would have dared to look down on her!Lilian's sudden outburst had made one thing clear to the smarter guests: everyone could hear Yelena's thoughts.I believed I could use this to my advantage and bait out my real

I nodded with a smile. This time, even the ever-composed Lilian was visibly shocked. She invited me to the VIP lounge for a private conversation. My birth parents and Johnny attempted to follow, but the Madden family's guards unceremoniously blocked their path.Meanwhile, Yelena was still carefully holding onto the poodle as she stomped toward me. She looked extremely pissed. She then pulled me aside."Mary, you vixen! What kind of spell did you cast on the Maddens? Why are they treating you with such respect while I—"I cut her off nonchalantly, "Because I can cure her son's legs.""Bullshit! You're just a penniless nobody who survives on fishing. How the hell would you know medicine?"I chuckled dismissively. "You clearly don't know a thing about me. It seems your claim about having investigated my background was just a lie to trick them, right?""So what if it was? No matter what I say, Dad, Mom, and Johnny will always believe me unconditionally. I briefly explained my objectives to Lilian and Howard. Our team had recently dismantled a large-scale scam operation in Rangoria, but the mastermind was still at large and hiding in Ashborough under a secret identity. He was a high-profile figure with a strong interest in antiques. This mission's objective was to lure him out and take the entire gang down.Lilian spoke up. "With the Sterling-Madden engagement, all of Ashborough's most powerful officials and elite figures are gathered here. Are you planning to use this as an opportunity to screen for potential suspects?"I narrowed my eyes and nodded."I've released some bait. Mrs. Madden Senior, I'll need your people to secretly keep an eye on Yelena. Additionally, I want to take advantage of the Sterling-Madden engagement to host a live auction. "The key item needs to be a thousand-year-old antique—something rare and precious enough to serve as the perfect bait.""Understood. I'll make the arrangements right away," Lilian r

The engagement banquet lasted until late at night. Once it concluded, Lilian arranged for me and Johnny to be escorted back to the Sterling residence.Mom, Dad, and Yelena had already gone to bed by the time we arrived. Only the housekeeper, Clara Finch, remained in the dimly lit living room, waiting for us.Johnny briefly instructed Clara to take care of me before heading upstairs to rest.Clara led me to my bedroom, closed the door, then turned around and bowed respectfully."Ms. Sterling, you've finally returned!"Just as Yelena had claimed, according to the original storyline, I should have been brought back to the Sterling family five years ago.But reality had deviated from that script. That was why I had arranged for Clara to infiltrate the household as a housekeeper. The next morning, Clara prepared a lavish spread for breakfast.Yelena wasted no time stirring up drama the moment she woke up.Lacking any originality, she threw herself down the stairs from the second floor and accused me of pushing her. With blood trickling from her forehead and her face badly swollen, she cried pitifully, "Dad, Mom, Johnny, help me! Call an ambulance!"One by one, my parents and Johnny stepped out of their rooms. But instead of rushing to her aid, they took their time coming downstairs.Yelena's thoughts were deafening."They hate seeing me hurt. Just wait, Mary. You're about to get ripped apart by my three loyal dogs! I barely need to do anything to have these three idiots dancing in the palm of my hand.
