The woods closed in as they moved deeper into them, the moon continuously spreading silvery rays across their pathway. She did her best to stay tight to Alec, trying to block out the trembling that ran through her body with each step. Whether the trembling caused by the cold or the remnants of the adrenaline that ran through her body from the fight, she could not tell. It smelled rich of pine and earth, but buried beneath it was something dark—something deadly.
After what she thought was hours, Alec finally slowed. In front of them, the trees began parting. On the other side of the trees was an opening, with a large stone structure in the middle, with other smaller structures that blended in with the woods. The cabin was grand, rustic, and reminded her of some sort of imagination, and it felt as if it was ancient, sunk within the earth. "This is it," Alec said quietly, breaking the silence. "Welcome to our land." Luna's eyes widened as she took her surroundings in. The structure was not what she had expected and was definitely far more elegant than what she had envisioned, and not just a home, but a fortress. Jax chuckled at the effect this place had on Luna's visage. "Surprised? We don't all live on caves." Luna shot him a look, but her lips twitched with a spillover smile, "I guess I really have made a few lofty assumptions about werewolves!" “Oh, you will see wild,” Jax winked. “Just wait.” “Enough,” Alec interjected, his voice taking on a more serious edge as he surveyed the clearing for eavesdroppers. “We need to get inside. Ronan’s scouts won’t be the only ones looking for us.” With that, Kade opened the heavy wooden door leading into the house, ushering Luna to step inside. She hesitated for a moment and, catching Kade’s eyes, saw something in them—something quiet and intense—that made her feel safer. She stepped over the threshold. The inside of the house was as lovely as the outside. The room had high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and a huge stone fireplace, which warmed things up, felt rather inviting even, particularly in light of the tension generated by the knowledge that they were hunted. “Sit,” Kade said softly, gesturing towards a large, soft couch close to the fire. Luna dropped her bag by the door and sat down, her legs still shaky after the night. Jax relaxed in a much-too-relaxed way in a chair nearby, considering that he now just fought a rogue wolf. Alec stood with his arms crossed over his chest, pacing in front of the fire. “We’re safe here, for now.” He broke the silence. “But we need to talk about what’s going to happen next.” Luna swallowed hard; she braced herself for gotgetting into the throat—“Next? You mean… how do we stop Ronan?” Alec’s green eyes found hers again before he answered, his expression serious, “Yes. But more importantly, how do we prepare you to stop Ronan.” “Prepare me?” Luna blinked her eyes, surprised. “But I told you—right before— I don’t know how to use this power. Until tonight, I didn’t even know I possessed it." “You may not know now, but you will learn,” Alec determinedly responded. “Your power resides in your blood. It is born from within you and it is the only thing strong enough to stop Ronan.” Luna felt a lump in her throat. “I... I don’t even know where to begin.” “You won’t have to figure it out alone.” Kade said, his voice was quiet but firm, eyes focused from his post by the window. “We will help you.” “We’ve got your back,” Jax added with a grin, while his hazel eyes were serious. "No one's going to let only you prepare for this." Luna's heart raced. It was so much to process as all of these things were flooding her mind. The weight of the responsibility she had not asked for was climbing on to her, and if she did not succeed, what would happen? She rubbed her temples, trying to digest the overwhelming email. Alec took a step forward, kneeling in front of her now, gaze steady, reassuring. “You’re stronger than you think Luna,” he said. "You made it through tonight, and that's just the start of it. We're going to teach you how to control your power and fight back. First, you need to trust yourself.” Luna gazed into Alec’s expressive eyes. It was hard to believe any of this was happening, but she could feel that they were not lying to her. They believed in her even if she didn't believe in herself. “How?” Luna finally said, her voice barely a whisper. “How do I start?” “With your connection to the moon,” responded Alec, whose gaze softened. “My connection?” she frowned. Kade interjected, “You’re a moon-bearer.” His tone was smooth and steady as usual, “Your power is connected to the moon’s cycle. The closer we are to the full moon, the stronger you will become.” Jax leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You felt it tonight. That rogue wolf came after us?" Luna hesitated, trying to remember. She had been so frightened, she hadn't felt anything other than her senses being overwhelmed; though there was something... a strange pull, like the night itself was watching her. "I... I don't know." She admitted. "It happened so fast." "That is normal." Alec said, standing again. "Right now, it is instinctual, but when you learn how to control it, you will sense danger long before it gets close to you. You will be able to boss wolves - like us." The thought of bossing them, maybe even protecting them, seemed so foreign. Alec's way of talking about it made it seem like there was no choice. It wasn't about her survival, but theirs too. "I don't want to hurt anyone." She said, feeling the fear in her voice. "You won't." Alec said softly. "This isn't about hurting others. This is about protecting yourself and protecting your pack. We are part of that now." Luna swallowed. It's not that she was sure when she became part of a pack. But in some organic way, Alec made it seem impossible to refuse. Kade stepped away from the window, moving toward the fire. "We don't have much time. Ronan will make his move soon and when he does, he will be coming for you first." Luna could feel her heart rate elevate. "How much time do we have?" Jax's face became grim. "A few days at the most. The full moon is almost here and it will be when Ronan is at his strongest." Luna could feel her stomach twist with dread. A few days was nowhere close to long enough to learn how to wield power she didn't even understand. How could they expect her to stop Ronan when she could barely wrap her head around the world she had been thrust into? "I'm not ready," she managed, her voice shaking. "I don't know how to do this." Alec's hand rested on her shoulder, a firm but comforting pressure. "We'll make sure you are," he said, "We'll train you starting tomorrow. You won't be doing this on your own, Luna. We'll be there every step of the way." Taking a deep breath, Luna shifted her eyes among the three of them. There was something fierce in their gazes—something protective. As the fear inched deeper into her core, she knew one thing for certain: they had faith. They had faith that she could stop Ronan. But could she have faith, too? She nodded slowly, even with her thoughts twisting in her gut. "Okay," she murmured. "I'll do what it takes." Alec's lips curled shyly into a smile, the tension in his body lessening just a little. "That's all we need to hear," he murmured. Jax tilted back against the bench and grinned down at her. "And hey, worst comes to worst, we can always just bite him, right?" Kade shot Jax a look of warning, and though it reverberated somewhere deep in her gut, Luna allowed a small laugh to escape. The whole idea was absurd; it felt like too much to bear—but just like that, surrounded by the fierce, protective walls of the wolves, a flicker of hope burst to life in her chest. Tomorrow, her training began. And she would be ready—she had to be.The sun was coming up, and the air carried a bite with it—the sky only beginning to glow light as it woke from the sleep of night. Luna found her way to a clearing behind the big stone house with the chimney as a dark silhouette up against the brightening sky. She stood in the cold; her breath fogging up in the air long before she thought she'd be finished. She was tired, still sore from the happenings of the previous night but Alec had insisted they start training early. There was no time to waste. “Okay,” Alec commanded, standing a few feet in front of her, arms crossed. “We are going to start by tapping into your connection to the moon. That is where your power originates and you need to be able to pull on it at will.” Luna nodded, but her nerves felt like a tornado. She had no idea how she would reach for a power she didn’t even feel. “And… how do I do that?” Alec smiled a small smile. “Close your eyes.” Luna blinked at him, then managed to comply, her lashes fluttering dow
Luna's heart beat feverishly, pulse roiling in her ears as the hulking wolf charged, human hands tucked close to enormous jaws. She stood rooted, mind screaming at body, but body did not answer against the looming harbinger, paralyzed by degree of fear. "Luna, run!" Alec's voice was harsh with urgency but barely started to sink in.In an instant, Alec’s body changed. Painfully, his bones popped and reforms as his clothes tore, his form expanding into the buff form of a midnight-black wolf. He lunged with a snarl that sighed through the clearing, right in Ronan's face.A collision as unimaginable as it was brutal: two bears of violence smashing together with incredible weight and strength and energy. Ronan withdrew his teeth, slashing into Alec's side and twisting, swinging a massive foreleg and slamming Alec down to the ground.Kade and Jax were in motion too. Kade shifted in a flash to his rippling gray wolf before charging in, while Jax stayed human, circling, alert, eyes fixed wi
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, and all should have been well, but its glow's warmth barely reached Luna as she took her seat perched uncomfortably on the edge of the well-worn leather couch, an uncomfortable distance away from the heat of the flames and instead, on the very edge of the unknown. She stared blankly into the light consuming logs, captivated as her mind produced scenes, and minutes, and minutes of everything that had happened just a few minutes earlier in the forest: The power; the warning that Ronan had just unleashed; being terrified and realizing that what she witnessed in the woods meant there were others like him!Alec, Kade and Jax remained in the same room and were quietly talking amongst themselves about their strategy of what to do next. Their voices were soft, but Luna could feel the tension stretched thin and rising in the air, as they worried about her, about what Ronan warned. She couldn't blame them. She was worried too. "You okay?" Jax asked after
The Elder’s BargainThe elder stood tall at the door, her stature was impressive. Her silver hair fell around her shoulders, catching the faint light of the room to appear almost iridescent, and her eyes were a pale luminous that boar through Luna with intensity. Alec, Kade, and Jax all tensed with various expressions of caution and respect. And Luna recognized that this woman was the real deal, and felt her instincts status from within her—she was not to be trifled with. “Who are you,” Alec demanded, steady but cautious. The elder's eyes flicked toward him; her expression elusive. "I am Seraphina," she said, her voice silky and authoritarian. "And I'm here because I want to hang out in this place for a bit."Luna swallowed. She trying to think and be serious. "You are the one? The one they said might know how to stop the Nightborne?"Seraphina's eyes returned to Luna. "Yes. But knowledge does not come without a price."Luna's heartbeat quickened. "What kind of price?"Seraphina mo
The early first distill of light barely touched the forest floor as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna packed the last of their supplies. There was tension and buildup for the impending journey ahead. They had laid out the map that Seraphina had given them on a makeshift table, its odd symbols and characters, looming darkly over them whilst they packed.Alec rolled the map up and locked it up in a waterproof tube. “We should head now,” Alec stated confidently. “The sooner we start, the sooner we can get it done with.”Kade echoed in as he nodded, crossing his arms. “If we've got food, water, and maybe some basic gear... we can only hope that it is good enough.” Jax was penning in the rest of his items; his movements were deserving and pristine. “We just need to be careful. Seraphina was not out of her mind about the dangers.” Luna had secured her pack on her shoulder, took a deep gentle breathing process, re-entering a deep level of breathing. She knew this journey was going to be another ch
The forest was alive with morning sounds as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna wound their way back to the cabin. The early light filtered through the trees and cast pockets of shadows on the ground. Before long, they had returned to the cabin. The warmth and security of the little shelter was a welcome change from the oppressive silence and threat of danger in the old temple. They regrouped in the main room, the glowing relic sitting heavy and silent in its case on the table. Alec paced, his mind processing what had so abruptly closed the door behind them. Kade sat against the back wall, watching the relic. Jax leaned against the wall beside the fireplace, staring into the fire.Luna dropped into one of the chairs at the table, needing the support behind her and the extra comfort it could provide. She let out a ragged breath, her body and mind wanting to collapse entirely. The relic shimmered slightly in the reflected firelight, and she had to squint a little against its glow. It was beautifu
A shadowy haze enveloped the sky as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna arrived on the outskirts of the forest where they were supposed to perform the ritual. There was a tangible tension among them. Only two days remained until the full moon, and that basically meant that all their hopes were hanging on the unlocking of the relic power to stand a chance against the Nightborne. The place they decided upon was an ancient clearing in the interior of the forest. The clearing was, as they were told, a place of power, an ancient sacred site of rituals centuries old, where the wolves of yore had interceded. As they stepped into the clearing, the air seemed almost to hum with digitized energy, and it felt as though the very ground had recognized its intended purpose. The sun illuminated the trees while long shadows traversed the floor, all knowing that the full moon was about to rise."This should be a good spot for the ritual," Alec said, with a low and thoughtful voice as he took a look around.Luna
Morning unfurled across the forest, yet the unease of the night before had not left Luna. The clearing buzzed with life as she stepped out of her tent. The serious, hushed tones of Alec and Kade's exchange filled the air. Jax was a little farther away, sharpening the blade of a knife while watching the perimeter; it was a ritual that had always seemed to calm him when it felt like trouble was brewing.Luna felt considerably weighted down by what she had talked to Jax about the previous night. His vision of that forest burning, her vanishing, gnawed on the inside of her like an insistent whisper of doom. As much as she wanted to dismiss it, the fear of a ritual getting out of hand bore down on her."Morning." Alec's voice interrupted her thoughts as he stood some distance away, offering her a reassuring smile. "How do you fare?" Luna half-heartedly ducked her head, trying to shake off her anxiety. "I didn't sleep much.""None of us did," Alec said, unsparingly. He waved his hand towar
