The sun was coming up, and the air carried a bite with it—the sky only beginning to glow light as it woke from the sleep of night. Luna found her way to a clearing behind the big stone house with the chimney as a dark silhouette up against the brightening sky. She stood in the cold; her breath fogging up in the air long before she thought she'd be finished. She was tired, still sore from the happenings of the previous night but Alec had insisted they start training early. There was no time to waste.
“Okay,” Alec commanded, standing a few feet in front of her, arms crossed. “We are going to start by tapping into your connection to the moon. That is where your power originates and you need to be able to pull on it at will.” Luna nodded, but her nerves felt like a tornado. She had no idea how she would reach for a power she didn’t even feel. “And… how do I do that?” Alec smiled a small smile. “Close your eyes.” Luna blinked at him, then managed to comply, her lashes fluttering down. She began to really notice the sounds of the forest all around her now. Birds chirping, leaves rustling in the wind and in the distance, she could hear the faint rushing noise of a small stream.) “Now,” Alec’s voice was calm and steady, “take a deep breath. Start to feel the air around you. The moon is always present, even when you can’t see it in the sky. Just note that you feel it.” Luna took a slow breath, wanting to focus completely on Alec’s words. First all she could exactly feel was cold; she knew her body was standing on Earth beneath those black, booted feet. And then… there was something tugging. Way down deep within her; something that lightly hummed through her bones…but now warm. it was faint, but real. “I feel something,” she said quietly, unsure of herself. “Good,” Alec said. “Now focus on it, and lift it up.” Luna tried as he suggested, trying to focus on the strange warmth within her, lifting up. The humming pulsed deep within her and traveled through her veins. And then she came to a start as there was some resistance- like she was forcefully pushing through an invisible wall. "I—" She drew a sudden breath, her brows furrowing in concentration. "It's as if something is blocking it." "That's your fear," Alec's voice was firm, yet comforting. "You're holding back because you're afraid of what you would feel. You must trust yourself, Luna." She clenched her teeth, frustration bubbling to the surface. "It's not that easy." "I know," Alec said, taking a step closer. "But you have to go past it. Your power is attached to your feelings, and you can't control it if you aren't willing to face what you're holding back." Luna's heart raced. How does one face fear, when the whole world had been turned upside down? She found herself thrown into a fight she did not understand, with men who shifted into wolves, and was supposed to stop a monster she hadn't even seen. "Try again," Kade's deep voice rumbled behind her. She didn't even hear him, but now he stood only a few feet behind her, those blue eyes pinned on her. Luna gulped and closed her eyes again, letting her breath come out in a shaky release. She reached for the warmth inside of herself, again, but the fear was there, wrapping around her body like icy chains. The power was there just beyond it, like a fire waiting to ignite, but every time she got close, the fear stood between her and the fire. "I can't," she groaned, exhaling frustration into the air. "You can," Kade said as he took a step closer, the sound of another body entering the canvas grounding her. "Stop thinking of failure. Focus on what you want to feel." She bit her lip and tried again. This time, she reached for something different—not through fear, but need. She was pulling back, finding a way to protect, to fight, to survive. Warmth exploded through her, igniting like fire beneath her skin. Eyes popping open, for a single moment, everything felt sharper and crisper and the air was alive with energy, and she could feel that strange pull as though the moon was reaching out to her. "There," Alec said in soft tones, a quiet approval. "You felt that." Luna nodded, throat tightening as her heart raced with uncertainty. "I think so." "That was just the beginning," Alec said, stepping closer, eyes shining with pride. "You are stronger than you think." Jax loomed in, bounding unnecessarily tall with layers of golden boy-magic glowing in the early morning light, and he boomed, "Well, it looks like you finally beginning with this!" A weak grin spread across Luna's face. "Barely. I just don't know how to keep it going." "You'll learn," Alec remarked, voice laced with quiet confidence, as he stepped back a little, back into their completion, as soon as he had floated in. "Next, we will work on the control aspect of it. But…you need to rest, Luna. You're trying too hard." "Okay", Luna said mindlessly, but her head was still spinning with it. It was all right there, just a moment from grasping it, and it terrified her that it was so close to slipping away again. As she turned to go back towards the house, a brisk, cold breeze exploded through the clearing and brought with it a scent. Something metallic…something was very wrong. Alec stopped all together and his body went rigid. "Do you smell that?" Kade's eyes darkened. "Blood." Jax playfully earnestness vanished along with volition with his attention concentrating on the treeline. "We are not alone." Luna was just beginning to open herself up to ask questions over the blurring, when, out of the shadows, on the far edge of the clearing, appeared a figure. He stood tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair and handsome, angular features. His eyes, a burning amber, were locked onto Luna's with an intensity that made her freeze in place and feel a chill down her spine. "That's him," Alec growled, a dangerous rumble in his voice. "Ronan." Luna's breath caught in her throat as he studied her, the wolf-man now smiling coldly, menacingly, with lips curved slightly upwards. "Hello, moon-bearer." The voice rolled smooth as silk, deadly and warm. "I have been looking for you, for you are mine." Alec shifted in front of Luna, shielding her from Ronan's gaze. "You are not getting anywhere near her." Ronan chuckled ruefully, his eyes flashing feral hunger as he said, "Oh, I think we both know that's not true." Before anyone could react, Ronan's body rippled, bones cracking, before the wolf-man morphed into a monstrous hulking wolf. His eyes were on fire as he gave a deep, rumbling growl, and vaulted toward them. "Luna, run!" Alec shouted, already shifting himself as he stepped into Ronan's path. Luna couldn't move. Part of her wanted to, her heart was hammering in her chest whilst adrenaline coursed through her, but her feet were locked as the hulking wolf charged forward, claws thrumming to the earth when his eyes locked on hers, murderous intent bouncing off the floor. Once again, everything slowed; and for a split second, and terrified brief second, she recognized that she wasn't ready. Ronan was coming for her. There was nowhere left to hide.Luna's heart beat feverishly, pulse roiling in her ears as the hulking wolf charged, human hands tucked close to enormous jaws. She stood rooted, mind screaming at body, but body did not answer against the looming harbinger, paralyzed by degree of fear. "Luna, run!" Alec's voice was harsh with urgency but barely started to sink in.In an instant, Alec’s body changed. Painfully, his bones popped and reforms as his clothes tore, his form expanding into the buff form of a midnight-black wolf. He lunged with a snarl that sighed through the clearing, right in Ronan's face.A collision as unimaginable as it was brutal: two bears of violence smashing together with incredible weight and strength and energy. Ronan withdrew his teeth, slashing into Alec's side and twisting, swinging a massive foreleg and slamming Alec down to the ground.Kade and Jax were in motion too. Kade shifted in a flash to his rippling gray wolf before charging in, while Jax stayed human, circling, alert, eyes fixed wi
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, and all should have been well, but its glow's warmth barely reached Luna as she took her seat perched uncomfortably on the edge of the well-worn leather couch, an uncomfortable distance away from the heat of the flames and instead, on the very edge of the unknown. She stared blankly into the light consuming logs, captivated as her mind produced scenes, and minutes, and minutes of everything that had happened just a few minutes earlier in the forest: The power; the warning that Ronan had just unleashed; being terrified and realizing that what she witnessed in the woods meant there were others like him!Alec, Kade and Jax remained in the same room and were quietly talking amongst themselves about their strategy of what to do next. Their voices were soft, but Luna could feel the tension stretched thin and rising in the air, as they worried about her, about what Ronan warned. She couldn't blame them. She was worried too. "You okay?" Jax asked after
The Elder’s BargainThe elder stood tall at the door, her stature was impressive. Her silver hair fell around her shoulders, catching the faint light of the room to appear almost iridescent, and her eyes were a pale luminous that boar through Luna with intensity. Alec, Kade, and Jax all tensed with various expressions of caution and respect. And Luna recognized that this woman was the real deal, and felt her instincts status from within her—she was not to be trifled with. “Who are you,” Alec demanded, steady but cautious. The elder's eyes flicked toward him; her expression elusive. "I am Seraphina," she said, her voice silky and authoritarian. "And I'm here because I want to hang out in this place for a bit."Luna swallowed. She trying to think and be serious. "You are the one? The one they said might know how to stop the Nightborne?"Seraphina's eyes returned to Luna. "Yes. But knowledge does not come without a price."Luna's heartbeat quickened. "What kind of price?"Seraphina mo
The early first distill of light barely touched the forest floor as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna packed the last of their supplies. There was tension and buildup for the impending journey ahead. They had laid out the map that Seraphina had given them on a makeshift table, its odd symbols and characters, looming darkly over them whilst they packed.Alec rolled the map up and locked it up in a waterproof tube. “We should head now,” Alec stated confidently. “The sooner we start, the sooner we can get it done with.”Kade echoed in as he nodded, crossing his arms. “If we've got food, water, and maybe some basic gear... we can only hope that it is good enough.” Jax was penning in the rest of his items; his movements were deserving and pristine. “We just need to be careful. Seraphina was not out of her mind about the dangers.” Luna had secured her pack on her shoulder, took a deep gentle breathing process, re-entering a deep level of breathing. She knew this journey was going to be another ch
The forest was alive with morning sounds as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna wound their way back to the cabin. The early light filtered through the trees and cast pockets of shadows on the ground. Before long, they had returned to the cabin. The warmth and security of the little shelter was a welcome change from the oppressive silence and threat of danger in the old temple. They regrouped in the main room, the glowing relic sitting heavy and silent in its case on the table. Alec paced, his mind processing what had so abruptly closed the door behind them. Kade sat against the back wall, watching the relic. Jax leaned against the wall beside the fireplace, staring into the fire.Luna dropped into one of the chairs at the table, needing the support behind her and the extra comfort it could provide. She let out a ragged breath, her body and mind wanting to collapse entirely. The relic shimmered slightly in the reflected firelight, and she had to squint a little against its glow. It was beautifu
A shadowy haze enveloped the sky as Alec, Kade, Jax, and Luna arrived on the outskirts of the forest where they were supposed to perform the ritual. There was a tangible tension among them. Only two days remained until the full moon, and that basically meant that all their hopes were hanging on the unlocking of the relic power to stand a chance against the Nightborne. The place they decided upon was an ancient clearing in the interior of the forest. The clearing was, as they were told, a place of power, an ancient sacred site of rituals centuries old, where the wolves of yore had interceded. As they stepped into the clearing, the air seemed almost to hum with digitized energy, and it felt as though the very ground had recognized its intended purpose. The sun illuminated the trees while long shadows traversed the floor, all knowing that the full moon was about to rise."This should be a good spot for the ritual," Alec said, with a low and thoughtful voice as he took a look around.Luna
Morning unfurled across the forest, yet the unease of the night before had not left Luna. The clearing buzzed with life as she stepped out of her tent. The serious, hushed tones of Alec and Kade's exchange filled the air. Jax was a little farther away, sharpening the blade of a knife while watching the perimeter; it was a ritual that had always seemed to calm him when it felt like trouble was brewing.Luna felt considerably weighted down by what she had talked to Jax about the previous night. His vision of that forest burning, her vanishing, gnawed on the inside of her like an insistent whisper of doom. As much as she wanted to dismiss it, the fear of a ritual getting out of hand bore down on her."Morning." Alec's voice interrupted her thoughts as he stood some distance away, offering her a reassuring smile. "How do you fare?" Luna half-heartedly ducked her head, trying to shake off her anxiety. "I didn't sleep much.""None of us did," Alec said, unsparingly. He waved his hand towar
Luna Rivers narrowed her glare at the heavens, observing as dark clouds obscured the last semblance of the dying sun. The light faded quickly, throwing long veins of exploring shadows through the dense forest that flanked her new home. In her current surroundings, she had yet to see another living soul, which felt remarkably jarring, though also oddly… right. The old cabin sat at the end of a forgotten road and was entombed somewhere deep in the mountains; it was some… five miles from the nearest town. The cabin was bequeathed to her by her parents; even as they were alive they had not once brought the property to her attention. Luna only discovered the deed after their untimely passing and it was buried in the drawers of her mother’s desk as though it was a family secret taken to the grave. And here I am, in front of the cabin with my suitcase at my feet, both apprehensive and hopeful. Luna's life had gone through a rough patch of unfortunate events. She had lost her parents in a fr
