Captain Axel Welton's Point of View

As a soldier, I was always ready and willing to do certain sacrifices just to ensure my comrades' safety, the civilians, our country, and to ensure the success of our mission. That is also one of the reasons why I didn't give interest in romance. Because I know that in my job, I could die anytime.

Today, I am again willing to sacrifice my life, and this time, it is not just for the country, but for the whole world. It is not just for the now and my country, but for the future generation and the whole world.

But then, I didn't think that I will witness a scene like this, at this time. Normally, when we are on a mission and the situation is between life and death, we would just close our eyes for a moment and utter our silent goodbye if we won't make it alive, wishing it would be carried by the wind to our love ones. But this...

It is a scene far from what I expected, far from what I know. And

December 31, 2050 - Alice Springs Airport, Australia It has been a week since everything about Dr. Jhero's dirty plan ended, it has been a week since lives have been sacrificed, it has been a week since I lost Sean. On December 25, we celebrated Christmas despite our situation, everyone celebrated to welcome a new start, and a few moments from now, we will celebrate New Year and welcome 2051 as the new era, the restart of the world. For the past few days, dad and the military force has been busy doing rescue search for the others who survived but did not make it with us. There are newcomers, but because Alice Springs Airport is already full, they were transferred to another survivor's facility. And despite the business, dad never forgot to spare some time for New Year's celebration which will happen moments from now. I look at my wristwatch and caress it softly. Aside from the life inside me, this is my remembrance of Sean, one

January 1, 2050 - Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia The scene wasn't the same when I first saw this place. Sure, it is still isolated, with only big rocks, Acacia, and Eucalyptus trees around, but the whole place looks devastated. The proof of the blast was visible, it became even more eerily isolated. Sure, the crater was large and deep before, but it became larger and deeper now. With just a look, I know it wouldn't be easy to get up once you fall on this big hole and worst, you might die because of the obvious hard bed of huge rocks on it. I know there is no chance of survival in this one, and those people who were left here to sacrifice will be buried underneath this crater forever, including Sean. I sigh when I feel my emotions trying to resurface again. I can't let that happen now. Last night, I promised myself that I won't be an emotional freak anymore. I will strive hard to be a strong individual if I wanted to move

Fifty Years Later... A half-century has pass and the world finally recovered from the immense effect of Dr. Jhero's parasites fifty years ago. With the help of the dead's funds in their bank accounts, we used them to fund the budget needed to reconstruct streets, bridges, city facilities, buildings, villages, and houses. We didn't only focus on reconstructing the said buildings, but we also lend budget for agriculture, and technology remodeling. Sean's inventions helped a lot. A day after we came back to Philadelphia, the video I was referring to was decrypted automatically and it was a message, telling us what he wanted us to do with his inventions. He wanted us to use them as a part of our new beginning, and that's what we did. Though there is more, his creations were named not just his, but there is also my name on it. At the end of his video, he said that he wants our child to take care of his unfinished inventions and use them too to ma

  • One In A Million   BEGINNING CHAPTER

November 30, 2050 - Richforte Memorial Hospital, Philadelphia, United States Noise. Mess. Crowd. The cries of pain intensified and if a regular person is standing where I am right now, that person would probably wish to be deaf. The sound coming from the patients are depressing, so is the sight. People wearing all white as if they are astronauts, patients crying and screaming in pain while trying to break free from their restraints and the never-ending chaos. I've been witnessing this scene for the past few days, yet I am still not used to it, and I think I will never be. Currently, the whole world is facing another catastrophe that started a few weeks ago. A new virus rose, and it was so sudden, we weren't prepared that in just a short time, it affected half of the world's population. Now, we are having a hard time with the situation. Although they managed to

We are in a hurry as the elevator doors ping open, but no matter how in hurry we are, the sanitizing area is agonizingly slow. Once we're done with the sanitizing, we peel off our personal protective gears and rush to the double doors of the board room. Opening it, my hurt thumps as I know that the attention of the people inside will be turned to us, and I was right. All heads turn in our direction when I open the door wide enough for me and Georgina. Their strict eyes make me want to turn around and just go back to my office, but Georgina pushes me inside and pulls me on the two vacant seats on the side. I've been in the board room a couple of times, and it looks just the same as the last time I was here. There is a big screen in front, and the podium where chairman Richforte stands, broad and all authority, and the elevated high-tech steel circular tables that can accommodate up to one hundred and fifty people.

"Seriously? He wants you to be his assistant to the mission?" I nodded, and she leaps out of her seat. "Oh my god, Rosie! You're so lucky!" And so her blabbering about me and Sean begins. As she talks non-stop, I stare at the wristwatch Sean gave me. It really looks stylish. Of course, this one never escapes Georgina's inquisition, and I have to make up a story just to satisfy her. She knows I'm not wearing this wristwatch before I come to Sean's office. I smile. First name basis for him is not that bad. His name sounds good. Georgina is still talking non-stop when I stood up and tell her I am going to sleep. Since the virus outbreak starts, all the doctors could not go home for we could not risk our families. Even if we don't want to, we don't have a choice but to stay in the hospital. The hospital provided enough beds for the health workers in the Medi

  • One In A Million   CHAPTER 39

When someone's mind is set on a goal and is determined to reach that goal, you couldn't do anything for it to back down. A determined heart and mind never back down they say. And Sean is proof of that. Even after knowing that I am pregnant and that we are having a child, he still goes for the plan. He is still more than willing to sacrifice his life for everyone, for us, and our son's generation. It makes me proud and at the same time, devastated. Presently, we are standing at the crater, with the camouflage helicopters around, slowly being filled with medical workers ready to get back to their families. The first batch has flown and is now probably waiting at Darwin's airport. One by one, they left with hearts full of hope and at the same time, melancholy for those who will be left here and ensure the future. But nothing can compare to the pain I am going through right now. I still haven't accepted the fact that I cannot do anything

  • One In A Million   CHAPTER 38

December 23, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia My heart was filled with hope again as we kiss in front of everyone, amidst the time that was supposed to use for our escape. Public display of affection to the highest level is not something I liked, but I didn't give a damn to anything in the world as of now, and I just give all my attention in our kiss, pouring our affection for each other. When our lips parted we were both catching our breaths as our foreheads were once again pressed together. His other hand traveled down to my tummy and gently pressed his palms on it, feeling it. "Is it true? You're... you're pregnant?" he stammered, and I nodded."H-how..." "Two weeks," I uttered. "I am two weeks pregnant. I just found this out two days ago, my period was one week late, and it never came late before, so I tried a pregnancy test, and it was positive, Sean. I was just waiting for the right time to tell this to y

  • One In A Million   CHAPTER 37

Rosella Marie Hawl's Point of View The feeling of excitement, hope, and fear fills the room as dad announces our departure from the facility. They have planned everything, and they know that Dr. Jhero is hiding right now, still planning for his next moves, and they used it to bring us out of this facility. "I just hope this will all be over, for real! I can't wait to come back to my family." "And let us pray for a safe trip back home, as well as our families." Everyone is getting ready to go while I didn't move even a single muscle, knowing what Sean has on his mind. And I couldn't let him do that, although I know I couldn't do anything about it. "Rosella," I came back to my senses when I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I look up, I saw Gabriel, Sean's brother. He has this small smile on his lips while looking at me, and I know he has an idea of what I am thinking right now. He motions his head in a
