"Seriously? He wants you to be his assistant to the mission?"
I nodded, and she leaps out of her seat.
"Oh my god, Rosie! You're so lucky!"
And so her blabbering about me and Sean begins. As she talks non-stop, I stare at the wristwatch Sean gave me. It really looks stylish. Of course, this one never escapes Georgina's inquisition, and I have to make up a story just to satisfy her. She knows I'm not wearing this wristwatch before I come to Sean's office.
I smile. First name basis for him is not that bad. His name sounds good.
Georgina is still talking non-stop when I stood up and tell her I am going to sleep. Since the virus outbreak starts, all the doctors could not go home for we could not risk our families. Even if we don't want to, we don't have a choice but to stay in the hospital. The hospital provided enough beds for the health workers in the Medical Team Quarters, and to be able to accommodate everyone, those who have their own offices were advised to use their office when resting.
So far, we are ae to cope up with this setup.
Once I'm inside my office, I take off my robe and hang it on the rack on the side. Sitting on my swivel chair, I adjusted it so I can lay my back and press the IPad Mode of my wristwatch. Immediately, it transforms into an eight-by-ten IPad.
Examining it closely, I notice that there is a word engraved on its back cover. When I managed to read it, a smile made its way to my lips. It wasn't a word but Sean's initials were engraved on the back cover, together with the word Pad.
SGR PAD
SGR PORTABLE IPAD
Smiling like a fool, I press the power button and went on the system settings, and read the manual guide. An hour and a half later, I am a pro in using the IPad. Even so, I went on and started reading the information provided for the mission and the guide to the facility. As I was reading it, my eyelids become heavy and soon, I am drifting off to sleep.
I feel someone staring at me, slowly my eyes flutter open. My office is dimly lit, the main light is off, but I don't remember turning them off. My senses wake and I jolt up, my head spins with the sudden movement.
"Careful,"
"Oh!" I jump when I hear a voice.
Roaming my eyes around, I see a shadow standing beside the door of my office. I squinted my eyes and realized it wasn't a shadow but a man! And it's Sean.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"Am I not allowed to be in one of the offices of my own hospital?"
Eh? My brows creased.
"That's not what I mean. You shouldn't enter someone's office without prior notice, you are invading my privacy here. What if I sleep naked?"
He chuckles and didn't answer me directly. Instead, he asks,
"You sleep naked? In the hospital knowing that an emergency can occur anytime? And without locking the door?" he motions his head on the door on his side.
"Uhm,"
I forgot that I am actually talking to Sean Gabriel Richforte, and when it comes to this kind of talk and debating, you would never win against him. Sighing, I sit on my swivel chair and again, ask him what is he doing here.
"Well," he starts pacing towards my desk. "I couldn't sleep so I think of going here and see if my assistant is studying just like what I advised her to do, and I see her sleeping."
I scoff, "I was busy reading the files and I didn't know I've fallen asleep. But rest assured that I know enough now, chairman."
He gives me a glare, "I told you to stop addressing me as chairman."
"Okay, fine, Sean."
A sexy smirk made its way on his lips and for a moment, I think he's trying to flirt with me. Shaking my head, I pick up the IPad from my desk, sit back on my chair, and start reading again, not minding him.
I wasn't aware that we've been like that for an hour. Me, reading the files while, well, he's been silent the whole time, and I just realize it is dark, though not really dark, just dim. I peek at him and see him sleeping on the visitor's chair, his head bowed and he looks uncomfortable in his position.
Standing up, I turned off the IPad and switch it to WWM or wristwatch mode and turn to Sean who's uncomfortably sleeping in the swivel chair. Careful not to wake him up, I adjusted it so he can lean his back.
When I think he's comfortable enough, I sit back on my own chair and decided to sleep too since I know we have a breakfast meeting tomorrow. Sean will announce the list of participants in the mission, and my role as his assistant. I'm sure I'll be the subject of gossip once he's done announcing my role.
"Don't tell me you just need to be in my office just so you could sleep?" I murmur as I remember him telling me he couldn't sleep so he decided to go here.
I shake my head and again, drift off to sleep.
An unfamiliar sound stirs me awake. Slowly opening my eyes and readying myself to squint through the light, I realize that my office is still in dim light, and I remember what happened last night. I look at the visitor's chair in front of my desk where Sean is still is, just pressed something on his wristwatch and I realize that the unfamiliar sound was an alarm.
"What time is it?" I ask.
"Five in the morning."
"Our breakfast meeting is six."
He nodded. "Yea, and we only have an hour to prepare. Come on,"
He stands up and motions me to follow him, but instead of doing as I am told, I ask where are we going. And he said surely, I wouldn't go to the breakfast meeting without having even just a shower. Realizing he's right, I said,
"Yea, right. I'll have a shower in the shower rooms of MTQ."
"No, you wouldn't. You'll have a shower in my quarters."
"Huh?"
"Surely, the other doctors are also getting ready for the meeting. Don't you think it would be a hassle if you go to MTQ just to shower? Knowing that all of the doctors in the hospital are getting ready?"
Uhm,
"Go and get a set of clean clothes now. Or I'll drag just drag you to my quarters and let you wear my clothes. You wouldn't want to give your co-doctors something to think, don't you?"
I didn't know he could be so bossy that I scrambled to my feet and hastily opened the zipper of my duffle bag on the side and fish out a set of clean uniform, undies, and a new robe. Standing up, I hurry to his side and without a word, we head to his office.
Feeling refreshed after a proper shower, I took a deep sigh of relief. What I didn't know is there is an adjacent room in Sean's office which turned out to be a bedroom. In the middle is a king-sized bed, with a side table and nightstand on each side, a glass wall on the right side with closed curtains, a closet, and there is the door of the bathroom that is as big as my room in my apartment.
I sit on the edge of the bed while combing my hair. I just finished showering, and now he's inside, taking his time. He lends me a hairdryer so I managed to dry my brunette hair and now I'm combing it using my fingers, as it seems like he does not have a comb, or I just don't know where it is.
A smile formed on my lips as I realize that his office resembles those CEO offices I'm reading on ebooks. It confirms the gossips that he once aspired to be a businessman.
I hear the door of the bathroom opens so I turn in an attempt of asking him for a comb but it's such a wrong move. He steps out of the bathroom with only a towel wrapped around his waist, covering the lower part of his body. His hair is wet and there are droplets of water dripping down his neck, down his well-toned chest, down his six packs abdominal muscles, down his v-line and—
"Eyes up,"
I wasn't aware that my mouth is parted in awe, I close it immediately as a sexy smirk formed on his lips and my cheeks burned. I look everywhere but him. I hear his chuckles.
"Give me a minute to get dressed."
"Uhm, okay?" I answered, unsure.
The sound of his movements echoes in the four corners of this silent room. I turn around again and faced the door, listening silently, the comb inquiry is forgotten. A minute pass and I feel a presence behind me, at the same time, something tugs my hair, and I realize it's a comb.
"Steady," he murmurs as I try to move.
He places his left hand on my shoulder to hold me in place while he gently combs my hair, and I savor the moment. This is one of the rarest moments of my life, this only happens once in a blue moon. I didn't even expect I would be this close to my long-time crush.
"There. Done." I hear him step back.
I turn around and face him, "Thanks."
"You know what, your hair looks too long." his head tilts, "I think you need to get a haircut before we fly to Australia."
"Uhm, okay? But I don't agree that my hair looks too long." I replied.
"I don't mean literally too long. What I mean is, I prefer its length when we were still in college. You know, the ends curl at your delicate breasts."
All the air leaves my body and my lungs malfunctioned to his last two words. I don't know how to react. For someone like me, my long-time crush remembers my hair length back when we were still in college, I should be jumping up and down though it doesn't suit a twenty-six years old woman.
But then there are the 'delicate breasts' words at the end of his sentence. My eyes widen when a thought comes to my mind. Oh my god. Is this the main reason why he brought me here? Alone with him? And is this his hidden agenda why he chose me to be his assistant? Oh my, the chairman has a hidden desire for me! Is it?
"Oh, stop now," he says suddenly. "I know what that look means. Stop. It's not. Okay, just don't think about the last part of my sentence. Come on now, they are waiting for us."
I can't help but blush when we entered the board room and everyone inside looks in our direction. Some of them shared a knowing look, some smiled knowingly, and those young doctors who have a crush on the chairman raise their brows. Sean walks to the platform in the middle of the room and I follow, as per his instruction on our way here. I'll be in charge of the announcement of the list. Everything is ready, as always with the help of our high-tech and advanced equipments. Everything is in voice command and with just a word, data will flash virtually in front of everyone. Unlike before when in voice command is still not yet available for everyone, they use projectors for their presentation and to project info. They also use folders and papers to distribute copies, now, those things could be done either through virtual computers or through their IPads. Over the years, Science and technology have been i
Sean is in a hurry as he locks the door and puts things behind it so that it won't be opened immediately even after they manage to unlock it. With great force, he pulled the set of sofa in the middle of the room and put them on the back of the door before he pulls me again. I am out of my mind as he pulls me to the adjacent room, and once we're inside he locks the door too and faces me. Putting his both hand on my face like he's securing it and checking up on me, he asks if I'm okay. But instead of giving him an answer as to if I am okay or not, I ask, "Did I see it right or my eyes was just tricking me? Are they zombies?" He takes a deep breath before saying, "Listen, Rosella. I receive a call from Captain Welton, informing me that the medical team, the participants in the mission will have an emergency flight to Australia. There is a sudden zombie outbreak in Asia where the UVirus was first detected
Gone. They are gone. While the participants were on their way to the airport through the armored car, they were attacked by a group of zombies. The soldiers with them had no choice but to use their guns and shoot each one who tries to get their way, but even so, they did not manage to completely protect the doctors. They were outnumbered by the zombies, and some doctors helped with all they can to protect themselves and their co-doctors, resulting in losing their own lives in the process. Most of them were eaten alive by the zombies. Whenever there is a doctor who was thrown out of the car because of the zombies, the zombies' attention will be averted to the doctor. And that is mainly the reason why they got rid of them. "So in short, they sacrificed," I murmur. "Somehow." Sean replies who's now sitting beside me, also shock by the news.
December 1, 2050 - Colleti Research & Experimental Facility, Wolfe Creek Crater Western Australia I think my mind is going to explode any minute from now. The news of the zombie outbreak is shaking my whole system, and finding out that the crowd I saw on the ground are actually zombies did not help either. Until we reach our destination, I am as mute as an isolated room in the middle of a desert. Sean guides me to climb down the helicopter and in an instant, the idea of zombies was averted from my mind when I see where we are. It is not just me but all of us are roaming our gazes around. We are in the middle of nowhere, with rocks and trees surrounding us, mostly large Acacias and Eucalyptus, and some giant rocks. Other than that, there is nothing in here, not even the slightest clue that there is a facility in here. Then I remember that Wolfe Creek Crater is one of the most isola
December 2, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia The food that was served to us last night for dinner was satisfying, and today, our breakfast is also a satisfying one and will surely give us enough energy for our first day on a mission. Our room is just spacious enough to accommodate Sean and me, and because he unexpectedly announces that I will be sleeping with him, of course, there is only one bed in the room. Nowadays, liberty is really a normal thing and is not something big deal, so of course, both of us did not mind sleeping in one bed and note that I am not wearing a bra whenever I sleep. Currently, we are unloading things in our duffle bag and stuffing them in the closet which of course, is also one and we will use it together. The closet despite being small is enough for our clothes since we did not bring many, just a few. The room is complete with everything that we need too, like a hote
December 6-7, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia After spending our first day studying the data that was sent to us through our email, we started in our mission the next day after that. Although I have read the file over and over again the other day, it still does not make sense at all, and I am not the only one who has that kind of interpretation in the file. So even with the file, we still start from zero, from the basic. The first part of our research is to review the processes they did about the UVirus, and we will use that as our reference. We will find what went wrong, if they did not make it right that's why they failed to get anything about it. But after two days of thorough reviewing and pointing out things, we found out that they did nothing wrong. The steps are right, the equipments they use are right. So on our third day, we started to do it on our own. We did not make the process
"Besides Rosella, I've heard you say the F word for the second time now. And I swear, if I hear you say that again, I'll kiss the daylight out of you. And I will make sure you will stop fussing about the rumors." I stop breathing and gulped several times, and then his lips quirk up and formed into a sexy smirk, leaving me breathless even more. When he leaned back, I step back and drag air in my lungs, while he has this triumphant smile on his lips. He sits on the edge of the bed and stares at me, legs and arms crossed. "You know what, we can do something so that you won't think about the rumors anymore. It adds on the things you need to think about." "And what do you suggest that we do?" I retort, now able to breathe properly. "Let's make it real." And again, my lungs stop working as I hear him say those words. "Come again?"
December 8, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia Dr. Jhero is now keeping an eye on me and is watching my moves. I don't know how to feel about that. And after knowing that he's now keeping an eye on me just because of our heated conversation on our first day here, his presence that gives me the feeling that something is off only intensifies, not just that, I now feel that something is up with him. The sleepiness that I feel vanished after Sean told me that things. Currently, I am lying on my back while his arms are wrapped around me. He's sound asleep while here I am, eyes closed but my mind is fully awake, overthinking. I sighed again for the I don't know how many times tonight before I decided to go to the quarter's pantry for a drink. I carefully lift Sean's arm that is resting on my tummy. He stirs but did not wake, and I silently got out of the bed and creep out of the room. The silent an
Hello! If you reach this part, then I love you and thank you for going all the way here. This part is to thank everyone who spent their time and money to read One In A Million, thank you so much! Writing this one wasn't an easy game. I spent three months writing it while classes are ongoing. I've experienced mental blocks and severe headaches several times while going on with the story, but it was all worth it knowing that finally, One In A Million reached its ending. This is my first ever Science Fiction story, and the second novel I finished this year, 2021. I know you see plot holes in it, the grammatical, and typographical errors, and I promise to strive harder to get rid of those and be better in the future. I know I still have to learn a lot and I am more than willing to learn. So, again, thank you, readers, thank you for spending your time and money to read each chapter. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Also, thank you to my fa
Fifty Years Later... A half-century has pass and the world finally recovered from the immense effect of Dr. Jhero's parasites fifty years ago. With the help of the dead's funds in their bank accounts, we used them to fund the budget needed to reconstruct streets, bridges, city facilities, buildings, villages, and houses. We didn't only focus on reconstructing the said buildings, but we also lend budget for agriculture, and technology remodeling. Sean's inventions helped a lot. A day after we came back to Philadelphia, the video I was referring to was decrypted automatically and it was a message, telling us what he wanted us to do with his inventions. He wanted us to use them as a part of our new beginning, and that's what we did. Though there is more, his creations were named not just his, but there is also my name on it. At the end of his video, he said that he wants our child to take care of his unfinished inventions and use them too to ma
January 1, 2050 - Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia The scene wasn't the same when I first saw this place. Sure, it is still isolated, with only big rocks, Acacia, and Eucalyptus trees around, but the whole place looks devastated. The proof of the blast was visible, it became even more eerily isolated. Sure, the crater was large and deep before, but it became larger and deeper now. With just a look, I know it wouldn't be easy to get up once you fall on this big hole and worst, you might die because of the obvious hard bed of huge rocks on it. I know there is no chance of survival in this one, and those people who were left here to sacrifice will be buried underneath this crater forever, including Sean. I sigh when I feel my emotions trying to resurface again. I can't let that happen now. Last night, I promised myself that I won't be an emotional freak anymore. I will strive hard to be a strong individual if I wanted to move
December 31, 2050 - Alice Springs Airport, Australia It has been a week since everything about Dr. Jhero's dirty plan ended, it has been a week since lives have been sacrificed, it has been a week since I lost Sean. On December 25, we celebrated Christmas despite our situation, everyone celebrated to welcome a new start, and a few moments from now, we will celebrate New Year and welcome 2051 as the new era, the restart of the world. For the past few days, dad and the military force has been busy doing rescue search for the others who survived but did not make it with us. There are newcomers, but because Alice Springs Airport is already full, they were transferred to another survivor's facility. And despite the business, dad never forgot to spare some time for New Year's celebration which will happen moments from now. I look at my wristwatch and caress it softly. Aside from the life inside me, this is my remembrance of Sean, one
December 24, 2050 - Alice Springs Airport, AustraliaRosella Marie Hawl's Point of View It's been hours since we landed in Alice Springs Airport, still in Australia. This country is the safest place of all since they only have a small rate of zombies here. So, dad decided to bring every survivor here, and make Alice Springs Airport our quarters since this place too, don't have a lot of damage since every zombie were out there, on the streets. The explosions wreaked havoc in every city in the whole world. Buildings collapsed, streets were messed with debris, and cars, footbridges, bridges, and public facilities collapsed as well, everything is a mess. Everybody is busy setting up more tents too to make a temporary shelter for survivors who just came, though when we landed here, there were already tents set up. The others were also busy distributing foods to eat and giving medical assistance, they were all busy outside to start a new li
Captain Axel Welton's Point of View As a soldier, I was always ready and willing to do certain sacrifices just to ensure my comrades' safety, the civilians, our country, and to ensure the success of our mission. That is also one of the reasons why I didn't give interest in romance. Because I know that in my job, I could die anytime. Today, I am again willing to sacrifice my life, and this time, it is not just for the country, but for the whole world. It is not just for the now and my country, but for the future generation and the whole world. But then, I didn't think that I will witness a scene like this, at this time. Normally, when we are on a mission and the situation is between life and death, we would just close our eyes for a moment and utter our silent goodbye if we won't make it alive, wishing it would be carried by the wind to our love ones. But this... It is a scene far from what I expected, far from what I know. And
When someone's mind is set on a goal and is determined to reach that goal, you couldn't do anything for it to back down. A determined heart and mind never back down they say. And Sean is proof of that. Even after knowing that I am pregnant and that we are having a child, he still goes for the plan. He is still more than willing to sacrifice his life for everyone, for us, and our son's generation. It makes me proud and at the same time, devastated. Presently, we are standing at the crater, with the camouflage helicopters around, slowly being filled with medical workers ready to get back to their families. The first batch has flown and is now probably waiting at Darwin's airport. One by one, they left with hearts full of hope and at the same time, melancholy for those who will be left here and ensure the future. But nothing can compare to the pain I am going through right now. I still haven't accepted the fact that I cannot do anything
December 23, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia My heart was filled with hope again as we kiss in front of everyone, amidst the time that was supposed to use for our escape. Public display of affection to the highest level is not something I liked, but I didn't give a damn to anything in the world as of now, and I just give all my attention in our kiss, pouring our affection for each other. When our lips parted we were both catching our breaths as our foreheads were once again pressed together. His other hand traveled down to my tummy and gently pressed his palms on it, feeling it. "Is it true? You're... you're pregnant?" he stammered, and I nodded."H-how..." "Two weeks," I uttered. "I am two weeks pregnant. I just found this out two days ago, my period was one week late, and it never came late before, so I tried a pregnancy test, and it was positive, Sean. I was just waiting for the right time to tell this to y
Rosella Marie Hawl's Point of View The feeling of excitement, hope, and fear fills the room as dad announces our departure from the facility. They have planned everything, and they know that Dr. Jhero is hiding right now, still planning for his next moves, and they used it to bring us out of this facility. "I just hope this will all be over, for real! I can't wait to come back to my family." "And let us pray for a safe trip back home, as well as our families." Everyone is getting ready to go while I didn't move even a single muscle, knowing what Sean has on his mind. And I couldn't let him do that, although I know I couldn't do anything about it. "Rosella," I came back to my senses when I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I look up, I saw Gabriel, Sean's brother. He has this small smile on his lips while looking at me, and I know he has an idea of what I am thinking right now. He motions his head in a
