I knew something was off when my father insisted that we had a family dinner in our private dining room rather than with the rest of the pack. The last time we had dinner together as a family I was still a child. I must have been about eleven years old. That was the day that my father told me that he was enrolling me on an elite training programme.
I left home a couple of months later and I didn’t come back until I was eighteen years old. I was stuck in that facility for seven years with a bunch of alphas, betas and elite warriors. The only people who spoke to me the whole time I was there were Nolan and Kaiden. We became very close during that time and I am sure that is why Nolan ended up falling in love with me.
“I have some good news.” My father was smiling at me which in itself was a bad sign. How often have I seen my father smile? It couldn’t be more than a handful of times in all of my life. My mother kept her head down, looking intently at the plate of food in front of her. I didn’t miss the way she flinched at my father’s words though.
Placing my knife and fork on the plate in front of me, I prepared myself to receive bad news. Glancing at my mother again I could see that she seemed nervous, just like she did that night when my father sent me away. I could feel my anger rising. My father was about to interfere in my life yet again, I could feel it in my bones and I wasn’t going to let him do it. Not this time. Whatever he had in mind, I would fight it.
“Alpha Mason Dalton has agreed to take you on as his mate.” My father grinned at me as though he hadn’t just given me a death sentence. Did he not realise that he had just thrown me to the big bad wolf. Mason’s reputation was not a good one. He was known for being a ruthless monster. He killed without remorse and took a different woman to bed each night, sometimes two or three at once. It was hard to believe that my father would want me to be with someone like him.
“No.” I replied. It was best to keep it simple for him, that way he would know that this wasn’t up for discussion.
“It wasn’t a question. You will be his mate and you will do exactly as he says. He is coming to claim you tomorrow and we will announce your imminent bonding at your party tomorrow night.” He told me before turning his attention back to his food. My mother glanced at me then started eating her food again.
My palms were starting to get hot and sweaty. They were treating me like I was a child who was having a tantrum. Apparently my life was nothing more than a minor inconvenience for them, a stain on their perfect life. Our relationship has never been close, they resented me for not being born a boy and that only got worse when they realised my mother couldn’t bear more children. Even so I never thought they would stoop so low.
“What if I meet my mate at the party?” I asked.
“Then you will reject him.” My father had a smirk on his face as he spoke, he was loving this. What had I done to make him hate me so much? I wasn’t even here for a lot of my childhood so it wasn’t like I had been difficult to look after.
We ate the rest of our meal in complete silence. There was so much more that I wanted to say but there was no point. Any objections I made would fall on deaf ears but that didn’t mean that I would accept my father’s plans for me. I had a different plan for my own life and I know which version I preferred.
Dinner didn’t last long. My father had no interest in playing happy families and he left shortly after sharing his news with me. Once he left my mother reached for the gin and started drinking heavily. She was visibly upset about my father’s decision to sell me to alpha Dalton. She would never stand up to him though, she believed that lunas should follow their mate’s wishes blindly. It was why she and my father got on so well together, they had similar worldviews. It was just a shame for them that their only daughter was so strong willed.
My mom continued to drink and I couldn’t bear to watch it any longer. I excused myself and left her alone with her misery. I walked straight out of the house, not even taking the time to change or put a jacket on. I probably looked strange dressed in an evening gown as I walked through the pack in the early evening but I was too distracted to notice any strange looks I was getting. It didn’t matter, I had to get to Nolan’s house before anyone could work out what I was planning. I just had to hope that he didn’t have company.
Nolan had a small cottage on the edge of the pack a short distance away from my house. I was there before the cold night air had a chance to cool my raging temper. My wolf whimpered as I went to knock on the door of Nolan’s cottage causing me to hesitate. I know that she didn’t want me to do this but she hadn’t given me any better options. It wasn’t as though we were an omega who could easily submit to an alpha like Mason Dalton. Our alpha nature would force us to rebel against his cruel nature and I would end up getting myself killed. This was the only way I could see to get out of the arrangement my father made and still get to lead this pack. My mind was made up, this was the way it had to be.
I knocked on the door in front of me. Nolan opened the door before I even had time to lower my hand. His blond hair looked uncharacteristically dishevelled and he looked as though he hadn’t rested since I last saw him. When his eyes landed on my face he smiled and ran his fingers through his hair.
“I was worried about you. My brother told me what your parents are planning and I was worried they had locked you up to make sure you went through with it.” He said, the concern clear in his eyes despite the smile that was now on his face.
“That’s why I’m here, I want to take you as my chosen mate.” I said. Nolan’s tongue ran along his lips and his eyes changed colour as his wolf made his presence known. He closed his eyes for a few seconds, gripping the door tightly as he tried to reign in his wolf. When he opened his eyes again he seemed to be more composed.
“Are you sure?” He asked.
I nodded my head in agreement. Without another word I stepped into his house, closing the door behind me. The door barely had time to click closed before he was all over me. He pushed me against the wall, pressing his lips against mine and pulling me into his body. One hand held the back of my head while the other freely explored my body.
He pushed his body against mine, grinding his hips into me as he continued his assault on my mouth. I could feel his erection pressing up against me. My own desire was rising and I’d had enough of this foreplay. I wanted him to claim me.
“I think we should take this upstairs,” I said, pulling away from him slightly.
“No, I’m going to claim you right here. Then I will take you upstairs so we can spend the rest of the night exploring each other’s bodies.” He replied as he ran his fingers up my thigh. I could feel the possessiveness behind his words. He didn’t want to risk losing me, he wanted his mark on my neck as soon as possible and I was more than happy to oblige.
“Mark me Nolan.” I slowly moved my hair away from my neck and leaned my head to the side to give him better access. His eyes changed colour and his fangs extended. He was just about to lean in and bite my neck when there was a loud knock on the door beside us.
“Open this door immediately.” My father shouted.
I felt the weight of Brianna’s father’s alpha command as soon as the words left his mouth. I was centimetres away from getting the one thing I had wanted for so many years. It was much too close to have it all taken away from me so cruelly. I have loved Brianna for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t her beauty, even though she was the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen. What really attracted me to her was her strength, she worked incredibly hard to prove herself to her family. Nothing she ever did was good enough for them and yet Brianna didn’t complain or give up. I gave my heart to her years ago, I was more than ready for her to give me hers in return. “Don’t listen to him, Nolan. Mark me and make me yours forever.” Brianna pleaded. Her words gave me the courage to fight her father’s command. As I lowered my canines towards her neck I could hear her father’s forces breaking through the door beside us. My eyes closed, her skin was so close that I could feel the heat of it
My father might not have locked me in a cell but he may as well have. Three of his most highly trained warriors took me straight to my room and locked me inside before standing guard outside it for the whole evening. I could have probably still taken all of them down and escaped, but where would that have gotten me?I would have ended up on the run with no money and no clue where I was going. I have no intention of being forced into being someone’s chosen mate but if I was going to escape then I had to make sure I did this right. Make sure that there was no chance of me getting caught or followed. Unfortunately, that meant I was stuck here, waiting in my room for my father to come and deal with me.I thought he would only make me wait for a few minutes before he came to reprimand me but it seems as though I couldn’t have been more wrong. After a few hours of listening to the people standing guard outside my room and gossiping about me, I realised that he wasn’t coming tonight. I was p
When I walked into the room Brianna’s parents were whispering amongst themselves. Her father was wearing his usual stern expression but her mother looked to be almost distraught, she was quietly begging her mate for something. They broke up their conversation abruptly upon noticing me. It was clear what they were talking about but the interaction left me wondering about a lot of things.I had always assumed that alpha Kennedy’s reputation was a fabrication, just like mine. He had a mate and a daughter and I couldn’t see how anyone with two important women in their life could be so heartless. That was until I heard the way he spoke about his daughter, seeing the indifference with which he dealt with his own mate was just another confirmation of this. “You seem to be getting along well with my daughter,” alpha Kennedy stated with a smirk on his face. “She is a lovely woman,” I replied. That smirk made me want to deny his statement but that would have been counterproductive. I needed a
Another night of me standing in a dingy alleyway trying to pull any kind of useful information from the locals. We had managed to trace my parents to this city pretty quickly but now the trail seems to have gone cold. We were outsiders here and nobody wanted to share information with us. This wasn’t a new problem. It was something that I had run into on nearly every investigation that I had been a part of. But it was all the more frustrating to know that my family were the ones in peril this time. There had to be someone in this useless town who knew where my parents had gone, all I had to do was find them. The vampire in front of me was the third supernatural that I had spoken to this evening and this conversation was proving to be just as useless as the other two. Maybe Franklin would have had more luck with her than I had but I hadn’t seen him all evening and I had no idea where he was. “You know I can't share any information with a human.” The vampire grumbled before trying to
I wanted to hate Mason so badly but I didn’t. He could have treated me like property in the same way my father did, but instead he spoke to me as though my opinions mattered to him. He wasn’t willing to let me go but other than that he had gone out of his way to make me feel like I mattered. It was confusing and more than a little frustrating. It made me want to throw my clothes around the room and break some of the beautiful furniture that he put in here. “What’s wrong? Is the room not to your liking?”Somehow Mason had managed to enter the room and sneak up on me without me hearing a thing. That only annoyed me more, I was an alpha in my own right and my hearing was usually outstanding. This was all his fault, with his stupid confusing behaviour.“The room is fine, it is my host that I have a problem with.” Mason’s face was stoic but there was nothing he could do to hide the hurt that shone through his eyes. I didn’t like being the one that put it there but it wasn’t as though he
Brianna had just proposed a deal which would solve all of my problems. I wouldn’t have to force her to be my mate against her will as long as I would be willing to wait for us to get to know each other better. Her father wouldn’t be too thrilled with the arrangement, he had wanted me to mark her at the party but I had already decided that I was going to go against his wishes.Public markings were humiliating and I would never put my Luna through that. He would probably be annoyed when he realised that I was deviating from his plan but I doubted that he would say anything at such a public event. He wouldn’t want to risk me living up to my reputation by putting him to death, and he had to know that he wouldn’t stand a chance against me in a fight.“I agree to your terms.” I replied.“Great, would you like to shake on it or something?”I had a better idea, I felt the corners of my lips lifting. I knew that it was a bad idea to tease her but I couldn’t seem to help it. Whenever I said som
After Mason stopped kissing me and fled the room as though my lips were made of lava, I spent the rest of the afternoon in my room alone. I assumed that Mason had to leave to attend to some kind of urgent pack business but it still didn’t feel good. One second we were kissing passionately and the next he mumbled something incoherent and walked out of the room without even looking back. It hurt that he was able to walk away from me so easily while I was left behind wanting him. After spending a few minutes feeling sorry for myself I started looking around my new room. Mason must have prepared this room for me in a hurry. He had filled the closet with more clothes than I had seen outside of a store before but there was no order to it. They were all different sizes and styles, and every one of them still had the tags attached. It was the same story when I looked through the draws. He had even set out a desk for me in the corner of the room with a brand-new laptop and phone on top of it.
Nolan was already waiting for us when Franklin and I arrived at our rendezvous point. He was dressed in a dark suit and leaning back against a ridiculously expensive sports car. Almost every high ranking pack werewolf I had ever met acted like some kind of movie star and this Nolan character was no exception. He probably had more money sitting in his checking account than my family would see in our whole lives. Just thinking about it made me feel sick.“Is that what you are wearing tonight?” Nolan asked as we approached him.Looking down at what I was wearing I couldn’t see anything wrong with it. I was only wearing a dark t-shirt and smart jeans, but it wasn’t as though I was trying to impress anyone. This was going to be a business arrangement, it wasn’t a date, why would he be interested in what I was wearing?“You are never going to get him to wear anything else. If I didn’t know any better then I would assume that those jeans were surgically grafted to his body.” Franklin said, r
Everything about this place was amazing. I loved that it was much smaller and more personal than anything I had seen within my father’s pack, and I also loved that everything in here seemed to smell absolutely wonderful. I could see why Mason would come here so often, I had only been here for a few minutes but I could already feel myself getting more relaxed.Once the waitress came back to our table with our drinks, I ordered a sharing platter which had all different types of cakes on it. Mason had ordered the same thing and I figured that as he came here so often he would know what the best options on the menu would be. Besides, if Mason could even live up to half of what he was promising then I was going to need all the energy that I could get for tonight.“Maybe I should just take some pieces off your plates rather than ordering sometime for myself,” Dominic suggested.“Sure, maybe Mason will share with you,” I replied, scowling at Dominic playfully. I thought he had grown up aroun
When I had originally planned this date it was meant to be for Brianna and me alone, as a way to get to know her better away from the prying eyes of our pack. Of course, I had planned this days ago, before I knew that she was going to meet her fated mate, or that I would end up being her second chance mate.I had planned to take her out to a few different places, each one being slightly more intimate than the last, before hopefully ending with us in bed together. There was no reason that part should have to change though, just because there were three of us now didn’t mean that we couldn’t all end the night in bed together, making each other come and marking each other.I hadn’t anticipated how much I was going to enjoy my mate being intimate with another man. When I first realised that she was mine as well as Dominic’s there was a slight slither of worry that I might get jealous when he touched her. But as the bond grew stronger between us I realised that it didn’t bother me, and now
I could feel the anger bubbling up inside of me despite the effort that both Dominic and Mason were putting into calming me down. As Dominic’s mother laid out my father’s crimes there was no more denying the kind of man that he was. It made me angry to think of all the people that he has hurt, but it wasn’t just him that I was angry with. I was also angry with myself for not noticing all the problems with our pack sooner and doing something to stop him.“I think that is enough for now. I can process the evidence and send it over to the council later today.” Rowan suggested. He tried not to look in my direction but the way he glanced at Mason made it clear that he didn’t trust me not to lose my temper at Dominic’s mother. I could understand his concern after everything he had heard about my family but it only made me feel worse. I wasn’t a monster like my father, and I didn’t like the idea of anyone thinking I was.“It’s fine. I’m angry at my father’s actions but I am not going to do an
It was a little uncomfortable for me to watch Mason and Brianna being so intimate over breakfast even though I understood why he was doing it. He wanted to show his pack that Brianna was his mate and that nothing was going to come between them, but that didn’t make it any easier for me to be on the outside of everything.Brianna and Mason had finished their breakfast and they, along with Rowan, were getting ready to have a meeting to discuss what to do about Alpha Kennedy. Brianna looked down at where I was sitting beside her, she was waiting for me to make some move to indicate that I would be joining them but when I didn’t do so she started to look worried.“Aren’t you coming with us?” She asked, the sadness in her eyes making me feel guilty for not giving in to her wishes.Going with her would have only made me feel better momentarily however, there was a good chance that if I went with them then it would just be a continuation of what had happened over breakfast. I wasn’t sure how
Trusting Mason to handle my father was difficult for me, but if this thing between us was ever going to work then I needed to trust him, so that is what I did. By the time my father stormed out of the room, it felt as though my trust in Mason had been rewarded because somehow he had managed to get his way without it turning into an argument. That was something I had never managed to achieve before. Not once in my whole life had my father allowed me to get my own way or win a fight. When I was growing up I assumed that this was how all of his interactions with other alphas went, but after seeing the way Mason was able to handle him I wasn’t so sure. I had seen Mason beat my father on a couple of different occasions which led me to believe that either my father was losing his edge or he wasn’t the man he always made out to be.“I’m sorry about that, my love. I was struggling not to lose my temper with him as it was, I wouldn’t have stood a chance if he had kept mocking you.” Mason expla
Leaving Dominic alone with our mate didn’t sit well with me but it wasn’t as though I had any other choice. It wouldn’t exactly be fair to leave Rowan to deal with repercussions of Brianna’s prison break. It would be even worse considering that it was Brianna’s father who had turned out at our pack shortly after dawn, and he was threatening to report us to the council for misconduct. After Rowan mind linked me to let me know that alpha Kennedy had arrived I dressed quickly before heading downstairs to meet him. He was on my front doorstep with his beta and a couple of his warriors standing behind him, shouting loudly in my beta’s face.“Alpha Kennedy, to what do I owe this pleasure?” I asked as I casually walked up behind my beta.“I have evidence of your interference in my pack’s business.” Alpha Kennedy growled. He was clearly lying because it would be difficult to have evidence of something I didn’t do, but I couldn’t dismiss him without first having a discussion about it. I wasn’t
We had all been far too tired to argue about sleeping arrangements last night. If we weren’t then maybe I wouldn’t have ended up in bed with Brianna and Mason, so I guess I should be thankful for our exhaustion. After falling asleep with my arm around my mate I had the best night’s sleep I have had for a very long time. I hardly even noticed Mason laying on the other side of her with his arm around her waist and his face pressed against her neck.I woke up shortly after the sun came up but I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the comfort of this bed. After spending the evening holding onto Brianna our bond was stronger now and I could feel contentment inside of me that I didn’t think was coming from me.“For fuck’s sake,” Mason mumbled before carefully slipping out of bed and starting to pull his trousers on. I lifted my head to see what was happening, being very careful not to wake Brianna in the process.“Go back to sleep, I just have to attend some stupid meeting.”He finished get
Standing by and saying nothing as Brianna wrapped her arms around Dominic was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. My wolf and every cell in my body screamed at me to run over there and pull the two of them away from each other. But I knew I couldn’t do that.If I did then I would probably only succeed in pushing them together in the long run. So, instead I clenched my hands into firsts at my side and watched on helplessly as Dominic rescinded his rejection and held Brianna tightly in his arms.It hurt even more seeing them together because I had felt as though something was developing between the two of us, but now all of that was quickly forgotten just because he said a few easy words. I hated how it seemed so easy for her to cast me aside for the man who had rejected her.My wolf whimpered in pain, he knew that Brianna was probably our last chance of claiming a mate. To see her slipping through his claws when he was still too weak to do anything about it was more than he could b
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I growled, planting my feet in place and placing my hands on my hips.“Don’t be a brat Brianna. What are you going to do, fight us? We have guns and you don’t” One of my father’s top guards said, stepping forward so that I could get a good look at the gun in his hand. He had a smug look on his face that I was going to take great pleasure in removing. His threat only worked if I believed that he would be willing to kill me with the gun that he was holding, but I knew that was never going to happen. My father wanted me brought to him alive, and he wasn’t exactly the kind of alpha that would be very forgiving if his orders weren’t followed to the letter. With that in mind I allowed my fangs and claws to extend while simultaneously taking a step forward. The man in front of me had been so cocky that it clearly hadn’t crossed his mind that I might make a move against him. He must have spent too many years dealing with meek prisoners, and forgot that I was
