When I walked into the room Brianna’s parents were whispering amongst themselves. Her father was wearing his usual stern expression but her mother looked to be almost distraught, she was quietly begging her mate for something. They broke up their conversation abruptly upon noticing me. It was clear what they were talking about but the interaction left me wondering about a lot of things.
I had always assumed that alpha Kennedy’s reputation was a fabrication, just like mine. He had a mate and a daughter and I couldn’t see how anyone with two important women in their life could be so heartless. That was until I heard the way he spoke about his daughter, seeing the indifference with which he dealt with his own mate was just another confirmation of this.
“You seem to be getting along well with my daughter,” alpha Kennedy stated with a smirk on his face.
“She is a lovely woman,” I replied.
That smirk made me want to deny his statement but that would have been counterproductive. I needed a mate desperately and Brianna needed to get away from her father. She was already attracted to me, her arousal was so thick in the air while I was kissing her neck that I was sure she was seconds away from begging me to take her. In the end I had to drag myself away from here so that my wolf didn’t get carried away and mark her.
“She is lovely.” Her mother mumbled whilst scowling at me. The clear implication behind her words was that she thought her daughter was much too good for the likes of me. I wasn’t offended, I had worked hard to get a strong reputation and keep my pack safe. In time she would know that I would never harm her daughter, but now wasn’t the time to let my guard down.
Alpha Kennedy scowled at his mate, he was probably saying something about her attitude towards me over mindlink. I know that I had a reputation to uphold but it didn’t sit well with me to have him berating his mate right in front of me.
“I thought you wanted to talk to me while I was here. Are you going to tell me what you wanted to discuss or should I wait in my car for my new mate?” I grumbled.
“You like to get straight down to business don’t you? I appreciate that in an alpha. I have never liked these new age packs who want to talk for hours on even the smallest issue.”
He indicated for me to sit down beside him on the sofa while pouring me a cup of coffee. I accepted his hospitality, taking a long sip of coffee while I waited for him to stop blowing smoke up my ass and get to some kind of point. I had never realised that alpha Kennedy could talk so much shit.
“I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind letting me stay on as alpha for a few years after you merge the packs together. I will defer any major decisions to you of course but I just don’t feel ready to retire yet.”
I had thought it strange that he had offered me his pack so willingly but now things were starting to make more sense. He had no intention of merging the packs, he was just offering me something that he thought I wanted to make sure I accepted his daughter. Unlike him I couldn’t care less about gaining more power or land. There were only a few things I wanted and none of those could be bought.
I couldn’t help wondering what would happen if I didn’t accept his proposal. Would he try to take Brianna away from me or would he be more assertive and fight me if I tried to take over the pack. His reputation led me to believe it would be the second option but he was much older than me, he had to know that he wouldn’t stand a chance in a fair fight.
“That is fine by me, it will be a few years before I will be ready to take over the land.” I replied.
Alpha Kennedy smiled in response but I could feel the tension in the air dissipate, he had expected me to react badly but now he was just relieved. He took a long drink of coffee before changing the subject completely to talk about the party that I would be throwing in Brianna’s honour. He had originally wanted to hold the party here, it took a lot of convincing for him to let me hold it at my house and even then he made it clear that he didn’t trust me with the task.
I spent the next few minutes telling him about the arrangements I had made and answering his questions whilst waiting for Brianna to rescue me. I was incredibly relieved when she eventually stepped into the room with a suitcase by her feet and a backpack slung over one shoulder. Much to my disappointment, she had changed out of her form fitting outfit from earlier and into oversized workout clothes.
“Are you going to stare at me all night or are we going to get going?” There was a small smirk on her face that told me she had caught me checking her out and she was going to use it against me later.
‘I doesn’t matter, I would throw myself to my knees at her feet if she would let me touch that body of hers.’ Flint purred.
I cleared my throat to cover the laugh that threatened to break out of me then quickly made our excuses to leave. Brianna’s father wanted us to stay longer but I cut him off. I couldn’t deal with any more of his nonsense today without losing my temper and say something that I would later regret. Or worse, give away the fact that I was nowhere near as vicious as my reputation made out.
Grabbing Brianna’s suitcase I rushed over to where I had parked my car, Brianna followed me with a scowl on her face. She couldn’t make it more clear that she was only coming with me under duress. My first instinct was to be upset by her reaction but, the more rational side of me knew I had to be patient with her. Her dad had forced her into this and it would take time for her to trust me.
“It’s not going to be so bad being my luna, I will love you and always treat you with respect.” I told her once she got into the car beside me.
“You keep saying that but if you were such a good guy then you wouldn’t have to abduct a bride.”
I tried to hide how much her words hurt me but judging from the look of victory that he gave me, I didn’t do a very good job of it. It wasn’t a long journey back to my pack but it still wasn’t a comfortable one. Brianna spent the whole time scowling and looking out of the window. I tried to open up a conversation with her a couple of times only to get single word responses.
My frustration was building by the second but I managed to swallow it down and bury it until I had shown Brianna to her temporary room. Then I stormed into my office and took out my frustrations on some innocent pillows, shredding them to a million pieces within just a few seconds.
I hated the way she looked at me. I knew that her opinion towards me would change completely once I marked her as mine but that didn’t sit well with me. I wanted her to want me, to agree to be mine of her own free will. There had to be some way to make her fall for me, I was charming and handsome, all the women I spoke to told me so.
‘That is because they would say anything for a chance to become your luna,’ I could practically see my wolf rolling his eyes at me within my mind. Traitor.
“What the heck happened here?”
Rowan was standing in the doorway to my office looking horrified. I wasn’t usually the kind of alpha who lost his temper and trashed his office at the slightest inconvenience. He was probably worried that I had finally lost control of my wolf and he was going on some kind of rampage. It was something he had been worried about for a while, ever since I told him that my wolf was struggling with his lack of a mate.
“Brianna hates me. I need a mate but I can’t force her to be with me, it isn’t right. I need to find some way of making her accept me as her mate willingly.”
Rowan raised one of his eyebrows at me. He watched my confusion for a moment before opening his mouth to explain. “You’re not seriously asking me for advice are you? Because if you are then you are in more trouble than I thought.”
Oh. Sometimes I forgot how badly my beta had messed up with his own mate and how his rejection of her meant that he would likely never get a second chance mate. He doesn’t talk about it much but I know he still regrets the way he treated her.
I sunk down to the floor, resting my head in my hands. What was I going to do? I was meant to be announcing her as my luna this evening but it was going to be clear to everyone that saw us together how much she hated me. My pack would probably think of me as a monster for forcing a woman to be with me, and they would be right on all counts.
“I might not be an expert on women, but maybe you should start by taking her on a date?” Rowan suggested.
Another night of me standing in a dingy alleyway trying to pull any kind of useful information from the locals. We had managed to trace my parents to this city pretty quickly but now the trail seems to have gone cold. We were outsiders here and nobody wanted to share information with us. This wasn’t a new problem. It was something that I had run into on nearly every investigation that I had been a part of. But it was all the more frustrating to know that my family were the ones in peril this time. There had to be someone in this useless town who knew where my parents had gone, all I had to do was find them. The vampire in front of me was the third supernatural that I had spoken to this evening and this conversation was proving to be just as useless as the other two. Maybe Franklin would have had more luck with her than I had but I hadn’t seen him all evening and I had no idea where he was. “You know I can't share any information with a human.” The vampire grumbled before trying to
I wanted to hate Mason so badly but I didn’t. He could have treated me like property in the same way my father did, but instead he spoke to me as though my opinions mattered to him. He wasn’t willing to let me go but other than that he had gone out of his way to make me feel like I mattered. It was confusing and more than a little frustrating. It made me want to throw my clothes around the room and break some of the beautiful furniture that he put in here. “What’s wrong? Is the room not to your liking?”Somehow Mason had managed to enter the room and sneak up on me without me hearing a thing. That only annoyed me more, I was an alpha in my own right and my hearing was usually outstanding. This was all his fault, with his stupid confusing behaviour.“The room is fine, it is my host that I have a problem with.” Mason’s face was stoic but there was nothing he could do to hide the hurt that shone through his eyes. I didn’t like being the one that put it there but it wasn’t as though he
Brianna had just proposed a deal which would solve all of my problems. I wouldn’t have to force her to be my mate against her will as long as I would be willing to wait for us to get to know each other better. Her father wouldn’t be too thrilled with the arrangement, he had wanted me to mark her at the party but I had already decided that I was going to go against his wishes.Public markings were humiliating and I would never put my Luna through that. He would probably be annoyed when he realised that I was deviating from his plan but I doubted that he would say anything at such a public event. He wouldn’t want to risk me living up to my reputation by putting him to death, and he had to know that he wouldn’t stand a chance against me in a fight.“I agree to your terms.” I replied.“Great, would you like to shake on it or something?”I had a better idea, I felt the corners of my lips lifting. I knew that it was a bad idea to tease her but I couldn’t seem to help it. Whenever I said som
After Mason stopped kissing me and fled the room as though my lips were made of lava, I spent the rest of the afternoon in my room alone. I assumed that Mason had to leave to attend to some kind of urgent pack business but it still didn’t feel good. One second we were kissing passionately and the next he mumbled something incoherent and walked out of the room without even looking back. It hurt that he was able to walk away from me so easily while I was left behind wanting him. After spending a few minutes feeling sorry for myself I started looking around my new room. Mason must have prepared this room for me in a hurry. He had filled the closet with more clothes than I had seen outside of a store before but there was no order to it. They were all different sizes and styles, and every one of them still had the tags attached. It was the same story when I looked through the draws. He had even set out a desk for me in the corner of the room with a brand-new laptop and phone on top of it.
Nolan was already waiting for us when Franklin and I arrived at our rendezvous point. He was dressed in a dark suit and leaning back against a ridiculously expensive sports car. Almost every high ranking pack werewolf I had ever met acted like some kind of movie star and this Nolan character was no exception. He probably had more money sitting in his checking account than my family would see in our whole lives. Just thinking about it made me feel sick.“Is that what you are wearing tonight?” Nolan asked as we approached him.Looking down at what I was wearing I couldn’t see anything wrong with it. I was only wearing a dark t-shirt and smart jeans, but it wasn’t as though I was trying to impress anyone. This was going to be a business arrangement, it wasn’t a date, why would he be interested in what I was wearing?“You are never going to get him to wear anything else. If I didn’t know any better then I would assume that those jeans were surgically grafted to his body.” Franklin said, r
It felt amazing walking into the ballroom with my arm around Brianna’s waist. I had never dated anyone before, never had anyone that I could share my life with. The only person in my life who I could talk to was Rowan, but that wasn’t the same as having a mate. There were certain things you couldn’t really share with your friends no matter how close you were. What I really wanted was the kind of companionship that my parents had together, and Brianna was going to be my chance at obtaining that.I was so busy smiling at my soon to be mate that I didn’t notice Rowan approaching us. When he greeted us both he appeared nervous, as though there was something he was trying to hide from me.“Spit it out because you know that I won’t rest until I work out what is happening.” I told Rowan.“I don’t know what you are talking about.” He tried turning his back on me so I wouldn’t be able to see that he was lying to me, but he had clearly forgotten who he was dealing with. If he wanted to hide som
My mate was kissing another man right in front of me. If I was a fool then maybe I could rationalise it by saying that alpha Dalton initiated the kiss. But that didn’t explain why she was pulling him closer and kissing him back with so much enthusiasm. Even after everything her father said, she clearly wasn’t doing this completely against her will.I just wish it didn’t have to hurt so much. My self esteem was already low after what my ex did but this was a much larger blow. Your mate was meant to be almost genetically predisposed to love you, so what did it say about me if even she didn’t want to be with me. If I didn’t need alpha Dalton’s help so badly I would have snuck out of here and spent the rest of the evening drowning my sorrows in a dark and dingy bar somewhere. Franklin noticed the way I was looking at the woman alpha Dalton was kissing and it must have been clear to him that she was my mate. He was looking at me with such pity, I hated it. I was strong and resourceful. Gr
Mason only left with my mate a few minutes ago but I was already getting anxious. Everyone in the room was looking at me but none of them would approach me or talk to me. It felt as though I was an exhibit in some museum, people would walk past me while talking about the way I was dressed and the way I looked. Some of them even pointed at me as they gossiped about me. I downed the rest of the champagne in my glass, not that it was enough to have much of an effect on an alpha like me. I was going to need a lot more of those if I was going to rid myself of my anxiety. I was here alone while Mason was talking to my mate, probably convincing him that I wasn’t worth the hassle. He would probably come back to the party any moment so that he could reject me. This was meant to be a celebration for my birthday as well as my mating to Mason and I had a feeling that it was going to end with me crying. I probably didn’t help my situation by not pushing Mason away when he tried to kiss me. But
The last three days had passed by as a haze of constant sex interspersed with a few hours of rest now and then. It had been amazing, but I was beyond relieved when my heat finally broke at some point last night, and I was able to get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. I wouldn’t quite go as far as saying I was well-rested, but at least I was starting to feel a little more human than I had in days.I stretched out my muscles and slowly pulled myself into a seated position.“Where do you think you’re going?” Mason asked while looping his arm around my waist and pulling me back down onto the bed. He pulled me against his body so firmly that I could feel his cock pressing against my ass.“You can’t seriously still be turned on. You have just spent the last three days screwing my brains out and besides, I probably stink.”“You still smell delici
I waited for Raymond and his ex-mate to gather what they needed and leave before letting a low growl leave my throat. I couldn’t understand why everyone around me couldn’t comprehend why I didn’t want the worry of what the council would do next at the back of my mind throughout my heat. This would be my first real heat since I was a teenager and there was a good chance I would get pregnant after it. The last thing I needed was to go back to my pack and get into a fight with the council while potentially being pregnant.“There is no need for that sunshine, we will take care of you.”Dominic and Mason closed in on me from either side and started kissing me on my neck and shoulder. It felt as though their hands were all over me and the sensation of their touch and their lips against my skin was enough to dampen the fire on my skin and ignite one much deeper inside of me. As much as I w
The witch’s apartment was packed with so many plants and flowers that the air was thick with pollen and moisture. It was so intense that I made it difficult to breathe too deeply, and the tension between Raymond and his ex-mate didn’t help with that. She had allowed us into her home but was still doing everything in her power to make sure we were all aware of how unwelcome we were there. She had told us to stand at one end of the room while putting herself at the other end of it with her hands on her hips. Even though her apartment was small, there was still enough space between them that it would be difficult for Raymond to sneak in close enough to touch her.“I am waiting,” She growled.“I’m so sorry sweetheart. I should have never rejected you but that is something I can easily rectify. I Raymond ….”The woman held her hand out to stop h
Brianna had pulled Mason and me to one side so that she could take us through her plan. She thought she was being clever but I thought her impending heat was frying her brain because her plan made absolutely no sense. She wanted us to use her heat as a way of making the council members incriminate themselves in a way that she could use against them.It was never going to work. The council were too cautious to slip up in such a way and even if they weren’t, her plan was flawed. Blackmailing someone who was trying to blackmail you was precarious at the best of times, but doing it when your mind was clouded by lust was suicide.“We need to think of another plan, one that doesn’t put you in so much danger,” I replied.Brianna whimpered, causing Mason to shuffle a little closer to her and wrap his arms tightly around her. I hadn’t meant my voice to sound so harsh but Mason and I weren&rs
There was something wrong with my mates, I had been getting feelings of stress coming from both of them all afternoon and it only seemed to be getting worse as time passed by. It was an extra distraction that I really didn’t need when I was already struggling to trace their location using our bond.Adding to all of that, the man who had rescued me from the council seemed determined to share his life story with me. It sounded as though Raymond had been through quite a lot at the hands of the council but there was a time for sharing such stories and this wasn’t it. There had been more than one occasion in the last few hours where I had to bite my tongue so I wouldn’t tell him to shut the fuck up.“Do you have a plan?” Raymond asked as he took hold of my shoulder, halting my progress.“Of course I have a plan,” I growled. My tone wasn’t great but considering my curren
I was strangely calm as ex-Alpha Kennedy’s men dragged me through the forest towards their lair. That was because I knew that despite all of his posturing, he couldn’t kill Dominic and me without also killing or seriously harming his own daughter. Even he wasn’t crazy enough to do that. So, he must have had some other plan for us.I watched with interest as we entered the makeshift camp where Alpha Kennedy was now staying. We moved too quickly for me to see everything but from what I had seen, I was pretty sure that his mate and his son weren’t there. There were only a handful of tents and a few boxes of what I assumed to be supplies. There couldn’t have been more than a dozen people left in the camp and most of them were the mates and children of the warriors who had intercepted us.From the intelligence that the council had shared with us, this was only a small fraction of the people who had left to join
Getting caught red-handed by the council’s assistant was embarrassing enough but having them drag me into a room and hold me prisoner while both my mates watched was next level. I was meant to be a strong female Alpha and everything about today was making me feel more like an Omega.I had to watch helplessly while my mates were sent away on a dangerous mission and then once they were gone I was brought over to the table and pushed into a seat. There was something about the way the council members were looking at me as I adjusted myself within the seat that told me things were only going to get worse from there. I had to bite my lower lip to stop myself from making any sarcastic remarks while I watched them shuffling their paperwork in front of me.“You thought you were so clever when you were making plans with your weak human mate and your broken Alpha, didn’t you?” One of the council member’s assistants g
It didn’t escape my notice how even though so much had changed in the last few days, I was basically right back to where I had started. Standing in another dark alleyway looking for clues so that I could trace someone’s movements.Franklin had joined us shortly after we left our pack’s territory and he was now helping us in our search. He had left the pack shortly after the council had turned up but he didn’t go too far away. He had been dealing with the council a lot longer than I had and he knew we would be needing his help before long.He was even less happy about going along with the council’s orders than I was, although even he admitted that we didn’t have any other viable options. With the pack almost completely under their control and the potential for them getting backup from some of the nearby packs, it wasn’t going to be possible for us to overpower them without risking Brianna’
I don’t know how Dominic could stay so calm while our mate was in the hands of our enemies. I knew that he was used to hiding his emotions from others. It was just one of the skills he had picked up while working for the council alongside his parents but he was much better at this than I gave him credit for. There was barely any sign of stress on his face as he listened to the information that the council members wanted to share with him. Meanwhile, I felt as though I was barely holding onto my anger. My wolf was begging me to let him take over so that he could rip every single one of them apart and I was having trouble thinking of any reason good enough to deny his request.Nobody had dared to declare war on the council before because they feared what would happen to their pack if they did. But our pack was strong and we had many strong fighters, what would the council do if we decided to reject their authority? Could they really use
