Chapter 1: A sin
"The child they left behind is pitiful. Where will she be picked up now that she has no parents?"
"I heard her aunts and uncles, her mother's sister, will take care of her."
"Ah, it's better to be that way so that their daughter is still in good welfare."
Millicent just stared blankly at the two old women who were talking. They were all sitting now in front of the two coffins. The coffins contain her father and mother. She had no other reaction because all of her emotions had been consumed since she was a child. She was born into the world feeling that she was unwanted. To be honest, her father and mother do not care about her. They always leave to enjoy themselves. They go on vacations every day while Millicent is left at home to take care of herself. They don't even leave food for her. So, when she became aware of the world, she learned to stand on her own feet without depending on her parents.
Millicent just thought 'Should I be happy now that they are gone?'. She felt nothing else when she heard the news that her parents had an accident. It was a car accident where they are really prone to this kind of incident. Every day, her parents leave the house and come home drunk. She was only twelve years old when all this happened to her. She must feel so sad... because her parents are gone…. but why is she relieved?
"Millicent..."
Millicent looked at her aunt and uncle sitting next to her. Their eyes were swollen from crying but Millicent also knew that they were fake. They just wanted to act like this for the sake of many people who attended the funeral.
Millicent knew that what happened was in favor of her aunt and uncle on her mother's side. She also heard that they have been arguing for a long time about the land that was bequeathed to her mother and aunt by her late grandmother. Her late grandmother wanted to divide the land but her mother's sister only wanted to own it.
"We know how painful it is for you to lose your parents. Don't worry and we will adopt you since we still don't have children right now," said Aunt Miranda as she continued to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
Millicent just ignored it. "Let's bury them right away tomorrow," she said and her aunt and uncle were surprised.
As she expected, they only said one thing. "Alright, if that's what you want."
The funeral process of her parents went so fast. Many attended the gathering, some of whom Millicent didn't even know. None of her father's relatives attended because her father's relationship with his relatives was not on good terms. While on her mother's side, only her sister and her husband attended. She just gets tired every time she sees people around her pretending to sympathize with the death of her parents.
As their daughter, Millicent placed one rose each on top of her parents' coffins until the coffins were buried by funeral service workers. People started leaving until only Millicent and her aunt were left.
"You don't have to adopt me. I can take care of myself and live alone. You don't have to act, aunt and uncle. Please consider me as a stranger from now on."
A horrified reaction appeared on her aunt's face and she didn't seem to like what she said but Millicent already knew what to say so that her aunt won't speak.
"Take the land you desire and get away from my life. My parents are gone now but I'm smart enough to continue my life relying only on myself. I don't want to see you again." That's all she said and left that cemetery.
It just seemed like a typical day. She still didn't feel pain or anything. She went home and just turned on the television.
She sighed. "When will I be happy? My parents didn't even manage to change and pay attention to me before they died. I don't know if it's karma or if those above are just favoring me. The people who don't appreciate me are gone now."
She didn’t become an orphan. She did not accept what her aunt said that she would be sheltered because she knew that her life there would also be miserable. Her life would be better if she was alone. But how will she be happy from now on?
She studies in a public school. Her parents enrolled her there and she learned to go to school and go home alone. She still remembered that when she was just a child at the kindergarten level, the guards took her home and her parents even told her that she was a nuisance to the people around her. She has no right to cry or complain. She said she should be more thankful because she uses her parents' money to live.
"Why did I live? I wish I haven’t. I just looked more and more at my life as a crime. Why is this the destined life that God gave me?" Millicent just said absentmindedly and laughed involuntarily.
She thinks it's really tiring to live. There is no use if she just takes her own life. She now owns the assets of her parents. No one else will claim and attempt to take them. Her responsibilities increased even more because she is now the one paying the bills or maybe debts that will come out. Instead of being happy, she even felt worst.
"I just want to die."
Millicent left the house and started walking. It's very common nowadays that people to take children like her and sell their organs but she doesn't care anymore. She also thought that if her parents had taken her on the trip, she would have been involved in the accident. She just wished her life is over and there will be no more problems. Why didn't it just happen that way? She asked the heavens why she is still forced to survive in this world.
"Child! Look out!"
Millicent heard a loud scream along with the loud horn of a car. She looked at it and was almost blinded by the light coming from the car's headlights. Her body stiffened and she couldn't move her legs to leave.
"Move out because my brakes are not in control!" the car driver yelled at Millicent but she didn't seem to hear it.
If the driver crashes his car into the sidewalk, many people will die. But in the direction of Millicent who is just in the middle of the road, only she will die.
"Kill me now to end my suffering in this world," Millicent whispered and closed her eyes.
While closing her eyes, she felt a wind passing her body and it was as if time suddenly stopped. Only a few seconds later, she opened her eyes immediately. She groped her body to see if there was a painful part or a blood stain... she immediately looked at the car which was now on fire. It crashed into a post and she saw many people trying to help the driver inside the car.
"I'm still alive," she said and then there was loud thunder and lightning, and suddenly it rained heavily.
She immediately ran back to her house as if nothing had happened and locked herself there. She looked at her hands. "I shouldn't have lived. Why did you give me a chance to live, Lord?"
On the other hand, the angels and officers in heaven are in trouble. They were all shocked by what Linus did. Angel Linus was just sitting on one side while listening to what the other angels were saying to him.
"Why did you do that?" Angel Jacob asked him, his best friend.
"Do you know what can happen now that the book of life is messed up? It will reach Lord Rasmus and he will surely impose a corresponding punishment on you." said angel officer Tanya who was obviously nervous about what Linus did.
Linus looked at them and his face showed sadness, but no remorse for what he did. "I just feel sorry for the child who has no will to live anymore. I want her life to be longer and for her to know her true purpose in the world. Wasn't what I did good?"
Angel Jacob just sighed. "Linus, we've been watching over humans for a long time until the time of their fated death comes. You only just did this now! It's a big sin! The book of life has been messed up!"
"Sorry... but the book of life can still be fixed, right?" Linus asked and the other angels just looked at him in disbelief. They were all disappointed by what he did.
It is a sin to mess up what is written in the book of life. When a person is destined to die, it should not be prevented. People just reincarnate again and again and again in this cycle so nothing should be stopped from whatever is destined to happen. Each angel has a task assigned to them and these are the people that they will watch over until their destined death. Linus took great pity on the girl he began to watch over. He has only been watching over that child for one week because Jacob just handed her over to him. All angels memorize every face of the humans they watch over... but not their names. Every human name is written in the book of life and only Lord Rasmus had the right to know them all.
Angel Jacob walked back and forth. "So what now? What are we going to do? I'm sure Lord Rasmus already knew about this----"
"Yes, I know."
The angels looked at the newcomer.
The angels immediately knelt down and bowed. "Lord Rasmus, please forgive us!"
"Leave Linus and me alone."
Linus already knew what Lord Rasmus is saying. He will be punished.
Immediately, the angels around them disappeared and they were the only ones left in the garden. Linus was still lowering his head as he knelt in front of Lord Rasmus.
"I know your hearts are soft towards people so these kinds of events are inevitable. It has happened before." Lord Rasmus' opening words made Linus look up.
"Are you going to forgive me? I did the right thing to save that child, didn't I? She only deserves to live long because she has a purpose and she had never experienced happiness in her entire life. Her parents did not appreciate her and she didn't make any friends! She wanted to die but I saved her so that she would know that it is important to have life---"
"But she was destined to die because that's what was written in the book of life. Destiny wanted to end her suffering and have a peaceful life here in heaven after her death but it didn't happen. In return, someone must replace her life and it can be a sacrificial thing for someone who didn’t deserve it." Lord Rasmus interrupted what he was saying and showed an event from the world of humans. Inside a home, a child about Millicent's age fell down the stairs. That is the simple reason for his early death and the grief of his parents was seen.
Linus closed his eyes because of what he saw. He really couldn't bear to see someone die from his mission in the world.
"The book of life has restarted. Some people who are suffering now will have their suffering prolonged while evil humans will remain evil because they will not immediately receive the punishment that should have been reserved for them." Lord Rasmus looked at Linus. "Now, do you regret that you didn't do your duty properly? Many humans are affected today because of what you did."
Linus was speechless.
Lord Rasmus closed his eyes. "As a Lord who must give equal consideration to humans and angels, I will give you the punishment."
Linus's eyes widened when he suddenly felt something painful in his body. That caused exhaustion and his surroundings went dark till he lost consciousness.
Chapter 2: RebellionLinus immediately woke up from his unconsciousness. He was surprised when he found something different. Nothing is white and it seems that he is not the old angel who would just look down to observe people's lives. He saw things that he saw people live with. He looked at his hands, and feet, and felt his own body. When he saw a mirror, he immediately looked into it and found himself in a different body."Who are you?" Linus asked in front of the mirror, asking his reflection of himself."Linus! You're awake!" His best friend Jacob immediately appeared by his side. But unlike him, he can see that Jacob is a soul with wings in his eyes. It's not like he used to look at Jacob's appearance as if it was normal for him."Who is this in this mirror? Why is he imitating my actions?" Linus asked as he pointed to the mirror.Jacob just showed a fake smile to his friend. "You are already a human, Linus. This is the punishment imposed on you by Lord Rasmus. Apparently, you ha
Chapter 3: No hope Linus didn't listen to Jacob. He continued to live in the human world, but contrary to what his friend wanted to happen because he did what he wanted. He killed ordinary people he could see, for no other reason, he just wanted to play. The demons were whispering to him what he should do and he just followed them. "He has no hope of returning to being an angel." said the angel officer Walt. The other angel officers who were with him nodded. They had watched what Linus does every day from above. They have seen also how demons hover around Linus and whisper to him. Those kinds of incidents were not new to them. Many of the angels could not bear to see the human they were guarding die. Their hearts are soft, and fragile, which makes them easy to pity. Some of the angels didn't follow through and succeed in their mission so they were punished like what happened to Linus. They also became disciples of the demons until they lost their lives. They are now suffering in c
Chapter 4: MillicentLinus looked at the lying men he had just killed. He got a cigarette and lit it then walked away as if nothing had happened. The news that there is an inexplicable creature is spreading all over the city. His doings can’t be seen on CCTV where he’s killing men and women like a malign. Many are screaming and afraid. Almost no one comes out every night because of that news. Linus is only seen by people if he himself has the intention of showing up and he can also make the people he meets lose their memories, so he will never be imprisoned or involved in any crime that the world of humans has.Linus hasn't seen any angels since he made a contract with the demon that approached him. Since then, his heart has been filled with anger, especially toward Lord Rasmus. He has also removed from his mind the angels he gave importance to including his best friend Jacob. He had no hope of reaching out to his friend, especially since he had already done such horrible things... an
Chapter 5: New CEO Linus was surprised by the sudden offer but he couldn't deny the excitement that he felt. He never had someone offer him their life before. It was a strange feeling of power and responsibility that he didn't know how to handle. But he knew that he couldn't turn down the job that Millicent had given him. "A good deal indeed, Millicent. I'll take revenge on your co-workers and make sure that they never bother you again." Linus said with a smile. Millicent nodded, a determined look on her face. For the first time, Linus saw something in her eyes that he hadn't seen before. It was a spark of hope and gratitude, a sign that maybe her life could turn around. Linus started to follow Millicent to her apartment, keeping a close eye on their surroundings
Chapter 6: You're dead Millicent raised an eyebrow. "We were classmates?" Hansel grinned. "You must be thinking that I look different now. Well, you wouldn't believe me if I told you." Millicent couldn't stop staring at him. She was speechless. "Anyway, I have a lot of things to discuss with the rest of the team. I suggest that you all take notes." Millicent noticed how her co-officemates stare at her because the new CEO treated her way so special. The stares sting she felt she might be bullied again. "Thanks for coming, everyone," Hansel said as he took his seat among the rest of the marketing department members. "I'm Hansel Wade Albrecht, the new CEO of the company. I suggest all of you should be reminded of what the new memorandum has. I don't like my employees to be lazy, and abusive, that anyone can give unnecessary orders to their workmates. If these incidents continue, I will fire all of them. Do you understand?" "Yes sir," they answered in unison. "All right, here's the
Chapter 7: What kind of world?Millicent was happy that her plan worked. She was relieved that she was able to save her job. She was also glad that she was able to get rid of Justine. Now she's safe from his evil schemes. Justine got fired and Allison ask her for forgiveness."I'm sorry for accusing you." Allison apologized. "I'm grateful for what you did.""Don't worry about it," Millicent replied. "I don't have any ill feelings toward you." Millicent lied. It was a lie, of course. They were staring at her like she was a criminal back then and it was easy for them to talk behind her back. She will always have ill feelings toward them."I'm sorry for what happened to you," Allison added. "I don't want to think that you're the culprit."
Chapter 8: Go back?Linus felt that his body is on fire. Something burned him inside. He felt the pain coming from deep within his heart. He can't even breathe. All he wants is to be away from this pain. He can't stand it anymore. But he can't move! How can he just lie down and let this pain come upon him?"Enough!" he yelled. His scream echoed inside his head. A burning sensation inside of him is eating up his mind. He can't think straight anymore. The pain is too much to bear. He can't even stand. Is this real? Was he dreaming? Linus felt himself falling to the ground. He can't even control himself anymore. He tried to stand but he was too weak. He felt his consciousness fading away.
Chapter 9: EmbarrassmentThe conference day has come. Millicent tried her best to look for formal attire to wear. She was going to attend an important event like this in the company where she's working in. This will be the first time Millicent would go out with the new CEO, Hansel, who just transferred to the company. Her officemates were making her nervous because of their stares last time and she couldn't find anything good for the party. It was already morning when Millicent finally managed to put on a business suit and looked in the mirror. She was just glad that her officemates won't be there because of the conference. The conference is being held in the capital, far away from where the office is situated. Millicent hurriedly walk and was relieved that she arrived on time at the cafe where she will meet the new CEO and former classmate.Hansel looked very confident in his formal suit. He greeted her when she approached him, "You look stunning."Millicent stared at him with wide e
Chapter 14: Hansel's MomMillicent was working on her desk when suddenly, Hansel appeared beside her."Hello, Millicent!" he said cheerfully. "How are you today?"Millicent was startled and froze in her chair. "Ah! Hello!" she greeted him back awkwardly. She remembered what her officemates have said at their dinner. She can't believe that he's here again, talking to her like their positions are alike. She's trying to remind herself that Hnasel is her boss while she is just an ordinary employee in the company. It's so hard to communicate so openly with him because of the rumors that can spread out throughout the company."Are you okay?" he asked her worriedly.Millicent nodded, "Yeah, I'm fine.""You look pale."Millicent blushed and looked down. "Yes, I am a little tired.""So, what have you been up to? I haven't had the chance to talk to you lately."Millicent nervously smiled, "Work is busy.""Is it? Good, I'm glad to hear that." Hansel replied. He was trying to sound cheerful but M
Chapter 13: She's just my employeeHansel is staring at his office's desktop computer. He gritted his teeth when he found out that Millicent is still alive. He tried to look for a way to kill her but he wasn't successful. All of his plans failed. He is furious and thought of torturing her instead. He wanted to bring her to a deserted place to kill her. He wants to experience the pleasure of watching her slowly dying while she screams for help.It was him.... the caller and the one who pushed her off the rooftop. He knew and saw that he pushed her which made her fall. But he immediately left the rooftop. There was no CCTV everywhere, he made sure of that. But that is his mistake. How did she survive? Did someone save her? She has no friends! The people in the company were making fun of her. Does she have any magic to do that? He can't believe what happened. As Hansel is looking at the screen, he suddenly sensed some movement on the door. He saw Millicent standing in front of his office
Chapter 12: He must be readyMillicent went to Miss Wyatt's funeral. She was saddened about what happened to Miss Wyatt. She remembered everything that happened during their first encounter. The memories were still fresh in her head as if it had only just occurred yesterday. Millicent was devastated. She was inconsolable. She couldn't stop crying. She wanted to tell Miss Wyatt how much she loved her and that she misses her terribly. But she didn't say anything. She just stood there and kept silent. The church was filled with mourners. Millicent was the last one to leave the place. She was alone in the street. She stopped and thought about what to do next. She went back home and locked herself in her room. She wanted to cry forever. She wanted to scream out loud and curse the world for what it did to Miss Wyatt. Why is their life so limited? Why does it have to end like this? Why did it have to happen to her? Why did it happen to Miss Wyatt? Why did it happen to me? What kind of world
Chapter 11: My mother“Still not giving up?”Jacob looked at who asked. It was Walt, an angel officer. Jacob is still hoping that his best friend, Linus, will have a change of heart to become an angel again instead of following the demon that he had contracted.“Your best friend is a demon now, aren't you?""I know that!" Jacob was annoyed to hear that. He felt betrayed. He thought he was doing good in protecting Linus' life when he thought he could be an angel again. Now that he's not, he feels that he was just a fool. It's like he was duped.“Do you know what happens to people who're cursed?”"What?"“If you can't stop your best friend from doing those evil things, do you know what will happen to him? He'll be thrown to hell and be a demon disciple. It can't be helped. He, himself just made it worst. He just can't control his soul anymore. He's still alive because he doesn't care about the feelings of others. He never cared if he could save someone's life or not. That's why he ended
Chapter 10: Unknown messageMillicent, as usual, go on to her work and was greeted with many stares as she went inside the building. She just ignored them and continued to walk to the office. She doesn't have anyone to talk to in any departments except Hansel and their supervisor. She's used to it."Have you seen the pictures roaming over the internet? Millicent Gunn is on it. She's embarrassing the company so much. It was a prestigious conference and the boss let her attend yet she messed it up! Just look at her! She's like a fool!" one of the employees in the department said."Really? She's stupid! She isn't a capable employee!" another employee replied.Millicent is being treated by her co-employees with cold stares and pitying looks.Millicent shrugged and smiled weakly. She knows that they are just looking down upon her because of what she did. She can't do anything about it."Hey, Millicent! I saw the photos too!" another employee said and even approached her."Yeah!
