As I stood there, my eyes locked onto Amanda's, a whirlwind of emotions coursed through me. Her usually vibrant eyes now seemed dulled, shadowed by the horrors she had endured at the hands of that monster, Zane.

How did it come to this? How had I allowed such pain to befall the woman I cared for more than anything in this world? The guilt gnawed at my insides, a relentless beast that would not be tamed. I felt my breath catch in my throat as I took in the bruises marrying her delicate skin, the haunted look that had replaced her usual warmth.

"Amanda," I whispered, my voice barely audible, choked with emotion. "I can't believe what he's done to you. I should have been there. I should have protected you."

She looked up at me, her eyes filling with tears that she stubbornly refused to let fall. "Marcus," she began, her voice trembling yet determined, "it's not your fault. You couldn't have known. Zane... he was always good at hiding his true nature."

"No," I interrupted, shaking
