They were ringing noises in her ear and the pain in her lower back had worsened. She could hear screaming and something cold was running down her face. The screaming continued and so did the pain. She couldn’t find her wolf, it was buried somewhere in the darkness and she called for it. She could feel it, it was there - shaded by the darkness – but it was not responding.
“Not the wolf.” A hollow voice said. Its sound reverberated though every inch of her cells until the darkness absorbed it. Gwen wanted to speak, she wanted to ask what was happening but her voice was gone too. The last thing she remembered was Ivy asking her where she’d been.
It was raining outside and Gwen had been in a hurry to get home before she was misses so she had ran under the rain till she got home and was soaked in it. Ivy was furious, she wanted to know where she had been but Gwen was not telling. She had met a stranger and she had thrown all caution to the wind to be with him and in all the joy, had lost track of time.
“Wake up.” the voice said, the memory disappeared and she was back in the darkness.
“You need to push more. We’re almost there.”
The darkness was fading and I it’s stead was blinding light. Gwen blinked until the brightness reduced. She was in her room, laying on her bed and a strange woman was between her legs. Gwen growled, she felt her wolf stir but it went back down, refusing to heed her call.
“Ssshh…” the woman cooed and looked up. “Not the wolf. Do t wake the wolf of you’ll not be able to go through this without killing the child.”
“Who – “
The memory flooded her. They flashes though her visions like lightening. She was at the celebration and Zack was too, so was Fiona. Then she was in a car and Ivy was outside waving and then she was in this house and at the bar.
“Oh my God!” Gwen exclaimed. “The baby.”
“Its fine, it’s fine. Your child is alright all you need to do is let her into the world.”
“Who are –“ the woman pushed a towel into her mouth and Gwen’s teeth immediately but down on them. More sweat trickled down her face but the woman was quick to wipe them off.
“Now!” the woman ordered. “Push.”
*
The cry of the child was hypnotizing and Gwen reveled in it. Her baby was here and she was beautiful. She had taken after Gwen in so many ways and also get father from what Gwen remembered of him. His hair had been a golden blonde and his eyes a piercing blue. The child had his eyes and her hair was a combination of her mother’s red and her father’s gold.
The woman was gone, as fast as she had appeared. Gwen had not gotten the chance to ask who she was or to say thank you. The wolf, the woman had known of the wolf. No one knew Gwen was here and the Towners die not believe in werewolves. But the woman –
Gwen pushed the thought away. If her identity was in danger, she would have known it by now. The pack would have been here, howling into her ears and dragging her back to the pack house. Honey had reported that there was no one around the house, but he couldn’t report which location the woman had disappeared to.
Gwen looked at her beautiful child and smiled. It was worth it, she thought. Gwen was beside herself with joy which she couldn’t share. Ivy would have loved the child whether the father was human or not. She wished she could share this happy news with that one person who mattered to her but she had to think if other things too. Ivy would be in danger if she had any connection to Gwen. Especially with the birth of this child.
Zack sauntered slowly through the forest basking in the evening breeze. The setting sun spread on his shirtless skin and for a moment one could have though je was bathed in gold. His mother was standing underneath an oak tree and he went to stand beside her. “Do you still sorry for her?” she asked without looking at him. Zack gave the question some thought before answering. “Its been months since she disappeared and since then a lot has happened.”“You did what you did for your father. I know how request did not seat well with you but it was for the benefit of our pack. It was all the option we had.”She looked up at him now and Zack saw all the plea in her eyes. Their green bore into his. Zack looked away. “But he’s dead now.”“Yes. Think of what you want to do and how it would affect this pack. In everything, the pack should always come first, before even your own happiness. Your marriage to Fiona is in good for the pack.”Zack swayed lightly and then began to move away, leaving
The memory was seared into her brain. It flooded her with guilt and shame but it wasn’t enough to push away the butterflies in her stomach or the sweet throbbing in her neck where he had marked her with his teeth. It was short, intense and with a person whom she had never met before, a person that was like an abomination to werewolves. A human. Her heart leapt as she thought of her little act of rebellion. It left a bitter-sweet after taste in her mouth – if her kin were to find out –“Where’s your head at?” a voice said from beside her, causing her thoughts jump into the dark. “Nowhere, Ivy.” She straightened her gown with her hand. “Have you seen Zack anywhere?”Her eyes scanned the vast crowd of werewolf filled room and her nose took in their scents. “He’s probably busy with more important matters. It’s his family hosting the celebration, isn’t it?” Ivy said. Gwen nodded. Of course, It was. Of the eleven families that made up Zelda’s pack, Zack’s family was the one to host the c
“I can’t believe you’re leaving.” Ivy whined. She squeezed her hands around the luggage. “And Zelda gave you a go ahead to leave?”Gwen drew herself and her luggage to the door. “So I see. He must have found my reason good enough.”“And what reason did you give?”“Something about my parents. I think Zelda has a soft spot for them considering they died while trying to protect his ass.” Gwen shrugged.“I personally believe its because you’re that stoked about Zack and Fiona. You just can’t bear living in the same town as them.”Gwen crossed a look at her friend. “How many times do I have to tell you I have no problem with those two? I’m choosing to leave now because I think it’s the best thing for me. I’ve spent my entire life in this forest. I need to go and experience the world.”“That’s a lot of words. And that’s what guilty people do. Spill empty words.” Ivy smacked her lips. Gwen shook her head at her friend. Her friend could always sense when she was lying or trying to avoid a qu
A werewolf carried their child for six months and then gave birth in the most painful way possible. Gwen was in her fifth month and anxiously looking forward to the next month. Some days, as today, she could feel the child’s wolf stirring inside her, shifting and turning. She had taken up a job with one of the local bars in the town a month into her arrival. The owner of the bar was a short, round man named Bob, whose round face and wide mouth made him have the look of a smiling clown. He was a friendly and jovial man with a warm-heart and now, he stood in front of the counter, staring at her. “You don’t look okay. Why don’t you take a quick rest? I’ll ask Sarah to cover for you.”“I’m fine, Bob. It’s just the baby disturbing.”Bob gazed at her for a while before strolling off to chat with one of the customers. “He’s worried about you, Lia.” One of the girls said, calling her by the false name she had given them. “Oh, Suzy!” Gwen exclaimed, turning towards the petite lady. “You l
