Chapter 3

Author: Liazta
What Wendy did shocked everyone there.

Simon immediately stopped his mother. "Mom, don't do this. Have pity on Ellie!" he said.

"Pity? Why should I pity someone useless? She's truly an uneducated village woman. I told you not to marry her, but you did anyway. Look, she can't even take care of one kid. Look, my grandson died because of this woman." Wendy cried and pulled Ellie's hair even harder.

However, Ellie remained unresponsive, her eyes fixed on Nick's tiny body.

"Melissa should have been my daughter-in-law instead. She's a great woman, smart, intelligent, educated, and has a good job, unlike you, a parasite. You can't even take care of a kid." Wendy continued to rage and pull Ellie's hair with all her strength.

Once again, Ellie did not respond to Wendy's words. Even if the woman wanted to kill her right now, she would die with a smile.

"Ma'am, please have some empathy. Don't you feel sorry for Ellie? She just lost her son."

One of Ellie's neighbors even stopped the hair-pulling and tried to advise Wendy.

But she got scolded too!

"You say pity? Can't you see that my grandson died because of her? Just watch. I'll report my grandson's death to the police. I'll make sure you go to jail."

Wendy's threat made Ellie's neighbors step back.

"Ma'am, you need to calm down."

Now, the much-praised Melissa had arrived and tried to calm the woman down.

Meanwhile, Simon's brothers and sisters-in-law just stood there, silently watching Wendy's treatment of their sister-in-law.

It wasn't long before darkness once again enveloped Ellie—she fainted. Everyone was startled.

For quite a while, Ellie slept.

She only woke up when she heard a commotion from the living room.

Ellie jumped out of bed and ran out of her room.

"Don't touch my son." Ellie took the baby who was currently being held by Simon.

"I just want to bathe our son, Ellie," he replied, tears streaming down as he looked at his son.

"We don't need you. I will bathe him myself." Ellie hugged her son tightly.

Simon remained silent, hearing his wife's words. If asked about his feelings, he would say he was in immense pain. He felt guilty and full of regret.

If only he hadn't ignored Ellie's calls....

However, Wendy seemed furious and indifferent to the grief that filled Ellie's soul. "Hey, village woman! You have no right to stop his father from bathing his son."

Wendy even tried to snatch the baby from Ellie's arms.

But Ellie hugged her son tightly, also pushing her away.

Wendy stumbled a few steps backward.

Thankfully, Simon quickly caught her, preventing her plump body from falling.

Smack!

Three hard slaps landed on Ellie's pale cheek.

Wendy slapped her so hard, but Ellie didn't respond at all, even though her lips were bleeding.

"You insolent woman, how dare you defy me? Just so you know, I've never accepted you as my daughter-in-law. You are not on the same level as our family." Wendy raised her voice so everyone could hear.

"This is my son. I gave birth to him. I have always been with him day and night." Ellie looked at Wendy with red eyes.

"You gave birth to him, but have you forgotten who paid the hospital bills?" Wendy's emotions flared up even more because Ellie dared to defy her. "Simon only had 300, while I paid the remaining 1700. Until now, Simon is still in debt to me. Did you have money to pay for your delivery?"

Where was Wendy's compassion? Did she not have a heart? Meanwhile, Simon stood there, silent like a fool.

"Darling, cheer up. All will be well." The beautiful woman named Melissa held Simon's hand. Her words made it seem as if Simon was the one who had been wronged.

Even though everyone was looking at them, Melissa didn't care.

The neighbors who lived there didn't know what the relationship between Simon and Melissa was.

However, they were shocked when they saw Wendy's actions.

One of them even pulled Wendy away when she was about to attack Ellie again. "Don't you feel sorry for her? You have the heart to hit the mother?" said a neighbor, who was already furious with Wendy's behavior.

"A woman like that deserves to be beaten; there's nothing to expect from a foolish woman like her. She couldn't even take care of my son, and now her son is dead. She could have looked up solutions for a high fever on the internet," said Simon's sister.

Ellie remained silent and then went to the bathroom while carrying her son. Despite her head aching and feeling dizzy, Ellie ignored it.

This was her last chance to bathe her beloved son. Ellie gently wiped every inch of her handsome baby's skin. She carefully observed every feature of his face—his eyes, lips, nose, and cheeks. Ellie would keep her son's face well-preserved in her memory.

Simon stood silently at the door, watching Ellie bathe their son.

After finishing the bath, Ellie kissed her son repeatedly. From now on, she could only embrace the memory of her son. "Thank you for being in my life. Forgive me for not being able to hold you like this anymore. Please, take me with you. I can't take this anymore," Ellie said, sobbing.

Her chest ached and felt tight as she looked at Nick's lifeless body. She wanted to believe it was a dream, but it was truly happening. Ellie rejected the pain when Wendy pulled her hair. She rejected the pain when Wendy slapped her cheek. Yet, she still felt the pain, meaning it was indeed real.

After speaking to Nick, Ellie wrapped his tiny body in the bath towel he usually used. She then shrouded baby Nick with her own hands.

However, her milk started leaking again.

Ellie then took a breast pump and pumped her milk. After that, she stored it in milk storage bags and put them in the fridge.

Ellie had a lot of milk, she could even get 750 ml in one pumping session. She was skinny, but had large breasts due to an oversupply of milk.

"Nick, I have a lot of milk, I'll donate it to the hospital, okay? So you will have breastfed friends." Ellie cried as she looked at the milk storage bags she kept in the fridge.

Ellie's sorrow made many people pity her.

But they must have forgotten that life was a mystery and that Ellie's story might not be at its end yet.

-

At the hospital, a man stood gazing at his son inside the incubator.

His son was born two months earlier than the doctor's expected date and weighed only 1.2 kg.

"Nathan, how are you?" greeted Robert, the pediatric specialist who was treating the son of his friend, Nathan Hemingway.

Nathan, who was a famous and successful entrepreneur, just nodded. He was solely focused on his son, who was now one week old but still needed to remain in the incubator.

"Your baby needs breast milk to gain weight quickly. We've tried various brands of formula milk, but the result is the same. He is allergic to cow's milk. When he drinks formula milk, he vomits and his lips turn blue. Soy milk is also not recommended for premature babies," Robert explained.

"Since premature babies have an underdeveloped digestive system, they need nutrition that matches their needs to grow and develop properly. Therefore, I ask you to find breast milk for the little one," Robert said.

Nathan listened to what the doctor and his friend said. Should he gather nursing mothers and ask them to breastfeed his son?

"You need to find a breast milk donor," Robert suggested, echoing Nathan's thoughts.

"Where should I find one?" Nathan was puzzled by his friend, Robert.

For his son, Nathan would do anything. He was even willing to pay a high price if necessary. But where could he find a lactating woman who would be willing to provide breast milk for his son?

"Maybe a neighbor or an acquaintance could be a breast milk donor. For a donor, it's best to find a healthy woman without any infectious diseases. Her milk supply should also be abundant. If her supply isn't enough, she cannot be a donor since she needs to nurse her own son."

"What about the baby's mother? Has her milk come in?" Robert looked at Nathan. Since the baby was born, the mother had never come to see him. Yet she was in good health, and she had given birth normally.

Nathan remained silent in response to his friend's question. "Not yet," he answered.

"Alright, if you have any questions, you can see me in my office. I'll be off now," Robert said as he took his leave.

Nathan stood there, gazing at his son, who was so tiny with wrinkled and peeling skin.

A breast milk donor who would meet the criteria outlined by Robert—how could one find such a donor?

Nathan now sat at his desk. His eyes were fixed on the computer screen, but his thoughts were solely focused on his baby. He had already told his mother about it and hoped that she could quickly find a donor for his son. However, it turned out that finding a breast milk donor was not an easy task! His mother had already searched through the help of the household assistant, close neighbors, and her fellow socialites. However, she couldn't find a donor. To be a donor, the woman needed to have an oversupply of milk. After all, milk production typically drops once a child is over the age of one years old. Nathan's head was about to explode as he thought about all this. If he couldn't quickly find a breast milk donor for his baby, he worried about the poor child's growth and development. Nathan reached for the phone on his desk and called his personal assistant. After speaking with his trusted aide, Nathan ended the call. "Excuse me, sir." A tall and sturdy man entered Nathan'

"Of course, this hospital gladly accepts breast milk donors. If you want to donate, please go to the baby care unit on the fourth floor," the woman at the cashier responded. Ellie smiled. "Thank you, ma'am." After completing the paperwork, she headed to the fourth floor as directed by the woman at the cashier. Ellie knew where the baby care unit was because Nick had been born here. After birth, Nick was placed in an incubator because he had ingested too much amniotic fluid. He was born with blue lips and did not cry. So, Ellie frequently visited the baby unit to deliver breast milk for her child. This hospital held great significance. The place where her child was born and took his last breath. Ellie's chest tightened as she remembered. Ellie steadied herself, opened the door, and saw three nurses in the baby care unit. "Excuse me, nurse." "Yes, miss, how can I help you?" asked the nurse on duty in the baby care unit. Indeed, Ellie's appearance still resembled that

The nurse paused for a few seconds, captivated by Nathan's charming smile. "Yes, sir," she finally replied. She had met Nathan every day for the past week, but this was the first time she saw a smile on his handsome face. "The donor has an oversupply, so there's even enough for a week." "Will that woman become a regular donor for my son?" "I don't know yet," the nurse replied. "Can I contact her?" Nathan asked eagerly, relieved that he no longer had to struggle to find a breast milk donor. "I'm sorry, sir, I forgot to get her phone number," the nurse admitted regretfully. "Did that woman leave an address so I can visit her at her home?" Nathan asked enthusiastically. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't have her address either." He sighed in frustration. He hoped to quickly contact the woman who provided the breast milk for his child, but it turned out that he couldn't. "May I know the name of the person who donated the breast milk to my son?" he asked, full of curiosity.

For most people, a graveyard was the most frightening place, but not for Ellie. The young woman appeared comfortable sitting in front of her child's grave. Tears flowed incessantly, as if they would never dry. Even her usually large, round eyes now looked very small and swollen. "Nick, I want to find a job, so I don't get bored at home. I want to earn money and make a beautiful headstone for you." Ellie hugged the mound of earth over her child's grave, hoping to release the longing that suffocated her. No matter how many people said she must let go, she still couldn't bear to let her son go. "Nick darling, I am leaving now as it's already late. Forgive me for not being able to hug you. If only time could be turned back, I would have taken you to the hospital that morning, so you could be treated right away." She stroked Nick's nameplate and then hugged it for a long time. She wiped her tears and then smiled. "I am going home now. I'll come back tomorrow. I still miss you so m

It had been ten days, but the pain in her foot had not subsided, making it difficult for Ellie to walk."Ellie," called a man.She was uncertain when she heard someone call her name. However, she still stopped and turned around."Hi, how are you?" asked the man with a friendly demeanor."Good," she replied with a slight smile."Do you remember me?" The kind-faced doctor smiled warmly and asked."Hi doc," she replied. Although her condition was very bad that night, she could not forget the doctor who had tried to save her child."Yes, I'm Dr. Robert. It's nice to see you again. How is your foot?" Robert asked, looking at her foot.As Ellie passed by him, he vividly remembered the young woman. Robert called out to her because he saw her walking with a dragging foot."It's still painful, doc, but maybe it'll get better soon," she smiled, looking down at her foot clad in flip-flops."Have you had it re-examined?" Robert asked, noticing that Ellie's foot was swollen, bruised, and

"What do you mean by euthanasia?" Robert was stunned when he heard Ellie's request. "I'm afraid of injections, but if it's a lethal injection, I'm not scared," she said desperately. "I understand your feelings, but you shouldn't be like this. You need to love yourself. Think about your son. He'll feel sad if he knows his mother is crying," Robert stood up and approached her. She quickly wiped away her tears. She remained silent while Robert checked her heartbeat, stomach, and blood pressure. "Low blood pressure 90/70, stomach acid rising," said Robert after examining Ellie. "Is there any hope for death, doc?" She asked eagerly. "Enough with that already," Robert chided, looking at her angrily. "Those who are dead, buried, they cry and beg to live again. You, who are still alive, are busy wanting to die." Robert said irritably. "I was just asking, doc," she grinned. "You must not stress, eat on time, and get enough rest," commanded Robert. "Yes, doc," she replied.

Ellie's heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest when she saw the figure standing at the door. The man looked like a demon who could kill her with a heart attack. She grew increasingly upset when she saw the man's face, which showed no remorse even though he had almost given her a heart attack. "Excuse me, sir," she said as she exited when the man stepped aside for her. The man simply stared at her as she walked away. "Who was that?" Nathan asked as he sat down in front of Robert. As a pediatrician, it was unlikely for Robert to have an adult patient like the woman just now. "Oh, her. She's pretty, isn't she?" Robert didn't answer. Instead, he asked back. "Your type is young girls?" Nathan teased. "Even if they're young, they can still have children. She is very kind and a good mother. After all, age doesn't guarantee that someone will be more mature and responsible for their own child." Robert looked at Nathan with a cynical smile. Nathan remained silen

Nathan walked with light steps into his family's luxurious mansion. A smile spread across his lips as he saw a middle-aged woman sitting on the living room sofa, savoring a cup of green tea.His mood was lifted, simply because he heard that his wife had provided breast milk for their baby. The anger that had once peaked vanished in an instant. "Did you just come back from the hospital?" asked Madison. Seeing the happiness radiating from her handsome son's face, she knew that Nathan was in a good mood. "Yes, Mom," Nathan replied with a smile. He then sat on a different sofa in front of the beautiful woman, despite her age. "How is my grandson?" Madison inquired about her grandson. "Robert said that my child's condition has greatly improved. His weight has increased by 300 grams." "Really? I'm so happy to hear that. Tomorrow, I'll go to the hospital; I miss seeing him." The news Nathan brought truly made Madison happy. For the past two days, she hadn't been to the hospital

Madison smiled at her only son. "What took you so long?" "The traffic was bad, Mom," Nathan replied as he sat down beside her. "I stopped by the baby room earlier," he continued, glancing around. "The nurse told me the wet nurse is here." Nathan scanned the room, searching for the woman who had been feeding his son. "Yes, we've already met your son's wet nurse," Madison said, her gaze shifting toward Ellie. Nathan frowned slightly. "Where is she, Mom?" he asked, his eyes widening with anticipation. The tightness in his chest eased at the thought of finally meeting the person who had been caring for his baby. It meant he wouldn't have to search for a new wet nurse after all. Madison smiled and gestured toward Ellie. "Here she is. Her name is Ellie."Nathan stared at Ellie, his brows furrowing as disbelief flashed across his face. He rubbed his eyes a few times, as if trying to make sure he wasn't imagining things. "I'm going to hire Ellie as a babysitter and wet

Ellie remained silent, listening as the nurse in the white uniform spoke."Yesterday, when I last saw him, he didn’t look like this," Ellie murmured, watching the baby grasp her index finger. He’s tall too, just like a movie star."The pretty nurse spoke dreamily, clearly picturing Nathan. Ellie sat quietly in the chair outside the treatment room in deep thought. She had no idea who was inside. In this hospital, no one paid her any attention. People came and went as they pleased. For her, it was the safest place to stay while searching for work. But anxiety gnawed at her, what if security questioned her? Visiting hours had already ended.Sleep weighed heavily on her eyelids. Without shifting her position, she dozed off, her back slumped against the chair. But moments later, she jolted awake, a sense of unease creeping in. What if someone stole her belongings?A throbbing pain spread across her chest, reminding her that she hadn’t pumped breast milk since the afternoon. Her breasts felt swollen and sore, and her clothes were already damp with leaked milk. She hurried to the nursing room and began pumping. Since it had been hours, she managed to collect 750 milliliters—a surprisingly large amount. The sight of it filled her with relief. Smiling, she quickly took the mi

Ellie felt a rare sense of happiness at the orphanage. For a brief moment, surrounded by the laughter of children, the weight on her heart felt lighter. Seeing their bright smiles helped her forget—if only for a little while—the burdens she carried. Grateful for their joy, she had made sure to bring snacks and candies. As soon as she handed them out, the children eagerly scrambled for the treats, their excitement contagious. As she watched them, her gaze drifted to a caregiver holding a tiny baby."Ma'am, how old is the baby? Is it a girl or a boy?" Ellie asked, stepping closer. The caregiver, a woman in her forties, gently rocked the infant. "She's a girl. Two months old. Her name is Aliya."Her expression darkened slightly as she continued. "Aliya was abandoned by her parents at our doorstep. We found her at dawn… unconscious."Ellie's heart clenched.
