Chapter 2

Author: Liazta
The nurse from inside the NICU came out, calling for Dr. Robert. "Doctor, the patient's condition is getting worse."

Upon hearing that, Robert rushed into the NICU.

Ellie remained silent, saying nothing more.

She continued to pray for her son's survival. She couldn't bear it and wasn't ready to face losing him.

Even as the day turned, she remained sitting in front of the room.

Her bones already felt weak, and she couldn't stand. Only then did she feel the throbbing pain in the sole of her foot as the anesthetic wore off.

Click!

A nurse appeared, opening the NICU door.

This made Ellie immediately stand up.

"Nurse, can I go inside?" she asked.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, we need to wait for the doctor first. Also, you have to go to the cashier to complete the paperwork," the nurse replied.

"Alright."

Ellie followed the nurse's instructions and headed to the cashier.

As the anesthetic began to wear off, she felt the pain and throbbing in her foot return.

She kept walking, dragging her aching foot.

It didn't take long for the paperwork to be completed.

Ellie returned to the NICU where her son was being treated, and the doctor was already at the door.

"Doctor...?" Ellie asked with trembling lips, "How is my son?"

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we couldn't save him."

When she heard the doctor’s words, her vision started to blur and darken. Within a few seconds, she lost consciousness.

Ellie was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

The medical team at the hospital could only look at the young mother with sympathy.

After being unconscious for about an hour, Ellie finally woke up. She looked around and saw a nurse in the room.

"Nick, Nick!" Ellie cried hysterically, calling her son's name.

"Ma'am, please calm down," the nurse said.

"Nurse, where is my son? My son is alright, right? I can take him home now, right?" Ellie asked with a forced smile. Clear tears continued to stream down her cheeks.

Ellie believed that what the doctor had said was just a dream. Or that he was only joking.

"If my baby can't go home yet, it's alright. I don't mind. My baby just needs to be treated for a few days. Once he's recovered, I'll take him home," Ellie said, smiling at the nurse standing beside her bed.

The nurse remained silent for a moment. Despite feeling reluctant, she knew she had to tell the baby's mother the truth. "Your baby's body is being prepared to be taken home," the nurse replied softly.

Ellie wept, shaking her head as she heard the nurse's words.

"My son must be healthy. He just has a fever." Ellie chuckled softly, continuing to deny reality.

"Relax, ma'am. Is there any family member we can contact, especially the baby's father?" the nurse asked. In her current state of depression, it would be difficult for the baby's mother to manage the situation.

Ellie was silent for a moment. This was a reality she had to accept. She needed to be strong for her son. "I don't have any family, and his father is busy. I will handle everything myself. Can I see my son's body?"

Her heart was deeply wounded by what her husband had done. Contacting Simon was pointless.

Her son was gone!

Ellie had no intention of asking the man to handle her son's body.

The nurse standing beside Ellie felt sympathy. "Let me take you there, ma'am."

"Thank you, nurse," Ellie said, walking with a limp. Although the nurse offered her a wheelchair, she refused and chose to walk on her own.

Ellie saw her baby covered with a white cloth. Her legs felt weak when she saw her 3-month-old baby lying on the bed. Slowly, she lifted the cloth and looked at her baby's face.

"Why did you leave me like this? I can't bear this, I really can't," Ellie cried, hugging her son.

Why did she have to go through this heavy burden alone?

Where was the happiness her husband had promised her?

Simon had come to her family to propose and had promised Ellie's mother that he would bring her happiness. But it turned out that he had broken his promise.

Ellie continued to cry, hugging the lifeless body. The nurse stood silently, watching.

"When can I take my son home?"

"In one hour. Do you want us to clean him up here?"

Ellie gently caressed her baby's round cheeks. "No, I'll give him a bath at home."

"Would you like to take your baby home in an ambulance?"

"Yes please," she replied weakly.

"Can you help me with the paperwork?" Ellie wiped her tears. Her body felt weak, and she couldn't walk.

"Alright, please wait a moment," the nurse replied.

The nurse left and then returned with the payment receipt.

Ellie looked at the amount due, which included the ambulance fee.

"Nurse, this is all the money I have, and here's my ring as collateral. After my son's funeral, I will come back to pay the remaining amount."

"Alright, ma'am," replied the nurse before leaving.

Ellie continued to cry, holding her son. What happened today felt like a dream to her. Just yesterday, she had watched her son roll over on the bed. Last night, she had seen his toothless smile and heard his cries. But this morning, she was looking at the body of her beloved son.

"Ma'am, the ambulance is ready, let me take you to the parking lot."

Ellie nodded and carried her son. She got into the ambulance and sat in the front seat.

Sitting in the ambulance like this reminded her of when her mother passed away a few months ago.

But now, she was sitting in the ambulance again, carrying her son...

When Ellie arrived home, several neighbors were shocked by her arrival.

Especially when they heard Ellie's cries for her son.

"Nick, wake up, it's time to nurse."

Coincidentally, Ellie's milk leaked heavily, soaking the dress she was wearing. Usually, this meant it was time for her son to nurse.

But her son lay motionless.

"Nicky, don't leave me alone in this house. I get scared when I'm alone," Ellie cried sorrowfully.

Her cries moved those who heard her to tears.

"I can't bear it if you leave. Who will keep me company at night?"

Ellie's husband rarely came home. He was only home one day a week. The rest of the time, he was out of town, or so he said.

The middle-aged woman, who was Ellie's neighbor, tried to comfort the young mother.

"Ellie, calm down."

However, Ellie continued to cry and lament her fate. "Why did you leave me alone, Nick? Please wake up."

"What's going on here?"

The voice of a man very familiar to Ellie suddenly echoed.

Simon, her husband, appeared, entering the house with his legs feeling weak. Simon came with a woman.

Seeing his son's face, looking as if he were merely sleeping, brought Simon to tears once again.

The woman who came with Simon sat beside him, with her arms around him.

It was evident that she showed great concern for Simon, without acknowledging his wife, who was devastated by the loss of their son.

"Darling, what happened? Why did our son die?" Simon suddenly grabbed Ellie's hand. But Ellie harshly pushed his hand away.

Anger, disappointment, and the pain of loss made Ellie hate him deeply.

People inside the house turned their heads toward the door when they heard cries and shouts from there. Several men and women came inside the house.

They were Ellie's in-laws!

"What happened to my grandson? How could my grandson die?"

Ellie's mother-in-law Wendy, immediately shouted at her.

Ellie just stared blankly. It was as if her soul was no longer there.

This made Wendy even more furious. "Useless village woman. You can't even take care of one kid!" she shouted, pulling Ellie's hair in front of Nick's body...

What Wendy did shocked everyone there. Simon immediately stopped his mother. "Mom, don't do this. Have pity on Ellie!" he said. "Pity? Why should I pity someone useless? She's truly an uneducated village woman. I told you not to marry her, but you did anyway. Look, she can't even take care of one kid. Look, my grandson died because of this woman." Wendy cried and pulled Ellie's hair even harder. However, Ellie remained unresponsive, her eyes fixed on Nick's tiny body. "Melissa should have been my daughter-in-law instead. She's a great woman, smart, intelligent, educated, and has a good job, unlike you, a parasite. You can't even take care of a kid." Wendy continued to rage and pull Ellie's hair with all her strength. Once again, Ellie did not respond to Wendy's words. Even if the woman wanted to kill her right now, she would die with a smile. "Ma'am, please have some empathy. Don't you feel sorry for Ellie? She just lost her son." One of Ellie's neighbors even stopped the

Nathan now sat at his desk. His eyes were fixed on the computer screen, but his thoughts were solely focused on his baby. He had already told his mother about it and hoped that she could quickly find a donor for his son. However, it turned out that finding a breast milk donor was not an easy task! His mother had already searched through the help of the household assistant, close neighbors, and her fellow socialites. However, she couldn't find a donor. To be a donor, the woman needed to have an oversupply of milk. After all, milk production typically drops once a child is over the age of one years old. Nathan's head was about to explode as he thought about all this. If he couldn't quickly find a breast milk donor for his baby, he worried about the poor child's growth and development. Nathan reached for the phone on his desk and called his personal assistant. After speaking with his trusted aide, Nathan ended the call. "Excuse me, sir." A tall and sturdy man entered Nathan'

"Of course, this hospital gladly accepts breast milk donors. If you want to donate, please go to the baby care unit on the fourth floor," the woman at the cashier responded. Ellie smiled. "Thank you, ma'am." After completing the paperwork, she headed to the fourth floor as directed by the woman at the cashier. Ellie knew where the baby care unit was because Nick had been born here. After birth, Nick was placed in an incubator because he had ingested too much amniotic fluid. He was born with blue lips and did not cry. So, Ellie frequently visited the baby unit to deliver breast milk for her child. This hospital held great significance. The place where her child was born and took his last breath. Ellie's chest tightened as she remembered. Ellie steadied herself, opened the door, and saw three nurses in the baby care unit. "Excuse me, nurse." "Yes, miss, how can I help you?" asked the nurse on duty in the baby care unit. Indeed, Ellie's appearance still resembled that

The nurse paused for a few seconds, captivated by Nathan's charming smile. "Yes, sir," she finally replied. She had met Nathan every day for the past week, but this was the first time she saw a smile on his handsome face. "The donor has an oversupply, so there's even enough for a week." "Will that woman become a regular donor for my son?" "I don't know yet," the nurse replied. "Can I contact her?" Nathan asked eagerly, relieved that he no longer had to struggle to find a breast milk donor. "I'm sorry, sir, I forgot to get her phone number," the nurse admitted regretfully. "Did that woman leave an address so I can visit her at her home?" Nathan asked enthusiastically. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't have her address either." He sighed in frustration. He hoped to quickly contact the woman who provided the breast milk for his child, but it turned out that he couldn't. "May I know the name of the person who donated the breast milk to my son?" he asked, full of curiosity.

For most people, a graveyard was the most frightening place, but not for Ellie. The young woman appeared comfortable sitting in front of her child's grave. Tears flowed incessantly, as if they would never dry. Even her usually large, round eyes now looked very small and swollen. "Nick, I want to find a job, so I don't get bored at home. I want to earn money and make a beautiful headstone for you." Ellie hugged the mound of earth over her child's grave, hoping to release the longing that suffocated her. No matter how many people said she must let go, she still couldn't bear to let her son go. "Nick darling, I am leaving now as it's already late. Forgive me for not being able to hug you. If only time could be turned back, I would have taken you to the hospital that morning, so you could be treated right away." She stroked Nick's nameplate and then hugged it for a long time. She wiped her tears and then smiled. "I am going home now. I'll come back tomorrow. I still miss you so m

It had been ten days, but the pain in her foot had not subsided, making it difficult for Ellie to walk."Ellie," called a man.She was uncertain when she heard someone call her name. However, she still stopped and turned around."Hi, how are you?" asked the man with a friendly demeanor."Good," she replied with a slight smile."Do you remember me?" The kind-faced doctor smiled warmly and asked."Hi doc," she replied. Although her condition was very bad that night, she could not forget the doctor who had tried to save her child."Yes, I'm Dr. Robert. It's nice to see you again. How is your foot?" Robert asked, looking at her foot.As Ellie passed by him, he vividly remembered the young woman. Robert called out to her because he saw her walking with a dragging foot."It's still painful, doc, but maybe it'll get better soon," she smiled, looking down at her foot clad in flip-flops."Have you had it re-examined?" Robert asked, noticing that Ellie's foot was swollen, bruised, and

"What do you mean by euthanasia?" Robert was stunned when he heard Ellie's request. "I'm afraid of injections, but if it's a lethal injection, I'm not scared," she said desperately. "I understand your feelings, but you shouldn't be like this. You need to love yourself. Think about your son. He'll feel sad if he knows his mother is crying," Robert stood up and approached her. She quickly wiped away her tears. She remained silent while Robert checked her heartbeat, stomach, and blood pressure. "Low blood pressure 90/70, stomach acid rising," said Robert after examining Ellie. "Is there any hope for death, doc?" She asked eagerly. "Enough with that already," Robert chided, looking at her angrily. "Those who are dead, buried, they cry and beg to live again. You, who are still alive, are busy wanting to die." Robert said irritably. "I was just asking, doc," she grinned. "You must not stress, eat on time, and get enough rest," commanded Robert. "Yes, doc," she replied.

Ellie's heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest when she saw the figure standing at the door. The man looked like a demon who could kill her with a heart attack. She grew increasingly upset when she saw the man's face, which showed no remorse even though he had almost given her a heart attack. "Excuse me, sir," she said as she exited when the man stepped aside for her. The man simply stared at her as she walked away. "Who was that?" Nathan asked as he sat down in front of Robert. As a pediatrician, it was unlikely for Robert to have an adult patient like the woman just now. "Oh, her. She's pretty, isn't she?" Robert didn't answer. Instead, he asked back. "Your type is young girls?" Nathan teased. "Even if they're young, they can still have children. She is very kind and a good mother. After all, age doesn't guarantee that someone will be more mature and responsible for their own child." Robert looked at Nathan with a cynical smile. Nathan remained silen

Madison smiled at her only son. "What took you so long?" "The traffic was bad, Mom," Nathan replied as he sat down beside her. "I stopped by the baby room earlier," he continued, glancing around. "The nurse told me the wet nurse is here." Nathan scanned the room, searching for the woman who had been feeding his son. "Yes, we've already met your son's wet nurse," Madison said, her gaze shifting toward Ellie. Nathan frowned slightly. "Where is she, Mom?" he asked, his eyes widening with anticipation. The tightness in his chest eased at the thought of finally meeting the person who had been caring for his baby. It meant he wouldn't have to search for a new wet nurse after all. Madison smiled and gestured toward Ellie. "Here she is. Her name is Ellie."Nathan stared at Ellie, his brows furrowing as disbelief flashed across his face. He rubbed his eyes a few times, as if trying to make sure he wasn't imagining things. "I'm going to hire Ellie as a babysitter and wet

Ellie remained silent, listening as the nurse in the white uniform spoke."Yesterday, when I last saw him, he didn’t look like this," Ellie murmured, watching the baby grasp her index finger. "His little face wasn’t as handsome as it is now."The nurse chuckled. "Of course he's handsome! His father is incredibly good-looking. Sharp nose, red lips, brown eyes, and even brown hair. He’s tall too, just like a movie star."The pretty nurse spoke dreamily, clearly picturing Nathan. He had become the hospital staff’s unofficial heartthrob, especially since he had been visiting his baby’s room every day for the past three weeks.Ellie simply smiled and nodded. But then the nurse’s gaze fell on Ellie’s lips. Ellie sat quietly in the chair outside the treatment room in deep thought. She had no idea who was inside. In this hospital, no one paid her any attention. People came and went as they pleased. For her, it was the safest place to stay while searching for work. But anxiety gnawed at her, what if security questioned her? Visiting hours had already ended.Sleep weighed heavily on her eyelids. Without shifting her position, she dozed off, her back slumped against the chair. But moments later, she jolted awake, a sense of unease creeping in. What if someone stole her belongings?A throbbing pain spread across her chest, reminding her that she hadn’t pumped breast milk since the afternoon. Her breasts felt swollen and sore, and her clothes were already damp with leaked milk. She hurried to the nursing room and began pumping. Since it had been hours, she managed to collect 750 milliliters—a surprisingly large amount. The sight of it filled her with relief. Smiling, she quickly took the mi

Ellie felt a rare sense of happiness at the orphanage. For a brief moment, surrounded by the laughter of children, the weight on her heart felt lighter. Seeing their bright smiles helped her forget—if only for a little while—the burdens she carried. Grateful for their joy, she had made sure to bring snacks and candies. As soon as she handed them out, the children eagerly scrambled for the treats, their excitement contagious. As she watched them, her gaze drifted to a caregiver holding a tiny baby."Ma'am, how old is the baby? Is it a girl or a boy?" Ellie asked, stepping closer. The caregiver, a woman in her forties, gently rocked the infant. "She's a girl. Two months old. Her name is Aliya."Her expression darkened slightly as she continued. "Aliya was abandoned by her parents at our doorstep. We found her at dawn… unconscious."Ellie's heart clenched.
