Chapter 5

Author: Liazta
"Of course, this hospital gladly accepts breast milk donors. If you want to donate, please go to the baby care unit on the fourth floor," the woman at the cashier responded.

Ellie smiled. "Thank you, ma'am."

After completing the paperwork, she headed to the fourth floor as directed by the woman at the cashier.

Ellie knew where the baby care unit was because Nick had been born here. After birth, Nick was placed in an incubator because he had ingested too much amniotic fluid. He was born with blue lips and did not cry.

So, Ellie frequently visited the baby unit to deliver breast milk for her child.

This hospital held great significance.

The place where her child was born and took his last breath.

Ellie's chest tightened as she remembered.

Ellie steadied herself, opened the door, and saw three nurses in the baby care unit. "Excuse me, nurse."

"Yes, miss, how can I help you?" asked the nurse on duty in the baby care unit.

Indeed, Ellie's appearance still resembled that of a teenager.

No one would guess that she had given birth.

"I want to donate breast milk," Ellie finally said.

"Of course, please come in."

The nurse smiled at Ellie, who then entered the room filled with babies.

Inside the room, Ellie could hear the cries of babies.

However, one baby's cry sounded so much like Nick's.

Ellie's eyes welled up with tears. She almost cried if not for a nurse who spoke to her. "Are you here to donate breast milk, miss?"

Ellie took a deep breath and then nodded. "Yes," she replied.

"It's very fortunate that there's a baby here who desperately needs breast milk. The baby was born prematurely and cannot be given formula milk," the nurse explained.

"Oh, which one is the baby, nurse?" Ellie asked. She wanted to know which baby she would be helping.

"This one," the nurse replied, showing the baby box that Ellie had just seen.

"He was born weighing 1.2 kilograms. For a week now, his weight hasn't increased. His mother has never come here to see him. Usually, only his father and grandmother would visit."

The nurse explained briefly.

Ellie continued to look at the crying baby.

Unconsciously, she smiled and then inserted her finger into the small gap in the wall of the box. A smile spread across her lips as she touched the cheek of the very tiny baby.

The baby, who had been sleeping, now opened his eyes and looked at Ellie.

"Hello, how are you? My name is Ellie," she said, smiling as she introduced herself.

The baby looked at her, rounding his tiny lips.

"I hope that your weight will increase quickly, so you can get out of this box and see the morning sun. Sunlight is very good for newborns." Ellie smiled as she spoke to the child.

The baby, wearing only a diaper, continued to gaze at Ellie.

"Excuse me, whose milk bag is this?" the nurse suddenly asked.

It seemed impossible that the milk belonged to the young girl standing before her.

However, Ellie's answer surprised the nurse. "It's mine."

"Yours?"

Not only the nurse speaking to Ellie but also the other two nurses looked at her.

"Yes," Ellie replied.

"How do you have breast milk?" another nurse asked.

"I am married and have a child," Ellie answered, confused by the nurse's question.

"Oh, you're married? We thought you were still in school," said the other nurse.

Ellie just smiled at the nurse's comment.

"Here are the rest." Ellie then took out the other milk bags from her cooler pack.

"I see the date and time," the nurse observed, looking at the date on the breast milk bags.

"Yes, I stored the milk in the freezer because when I pumped them, I didn't know who to give them to." Ellie showed eight bags of frozen breast milk.

"Wow, that's a lot of milk," the nurse said.

Ellie just smiled at the nurse's comment.

"What about your child if you donate your milk like this?"

"My son died a week ago, so I pumped because I have an oversupply."

The room fell silent.

"I'm so sorry for your loss," the nurse said sympathetically.

Ellie nodded.

"Oh, a few days ago, I had the flu and took some medication. I've written the names of the medicines on the bags. Other than that, I don't have any infectious or chronic diseases. Thankfully I'm completely healthy."

She showed some milk bags labeled with the medication consumed.

"If this milk can't be given to the baby, just throw it away," she added.

The nurse nodded. "Alright, we'll consult with the pediatrician to see if this milk can be given to the baby. But usually, it's fine even if the mother has taken paracetamol," she replied.

Ellie smiled. "Okay, thank you, I'll be off now."

"Yes, ma'am," the nurse replied.

Ellie then walked back to the baby box that was housing the baby who would benefit from her milk.

She smiled at him.

Ellie inserted her finger into the gap in the box wall and touched his cheek. "Hi, little one, I'm heading home now."

Nathan came to the hospital to check on his son's condition.

From morning until evening, he spent his time looking for a breast milk donor.

However, the results were very disappointing. The man was almost desperate and didn't know where else to look.

"Good evening, Mr. Hemingway," greeted the nurse on duty in the baby care unit.

Nathan only slightly nodded. "I haven't found a breast milk donor for my baby," he said, watching his tiny baby who was sleeping peacefully.

Strangely, his son seemed very calm.

The nurse smiled. "It's okay, sir. Earlier this afternoon, a mother donated her breast milk here. We informed her that the milk would be given to your son."

When he heard this, Nathan's eyes widened. "Is that true?"

The nurse paused for a few seconds, captivated by Nathan's charming smile. "Yes, sir," she finally replied. She had met Nathan every day for the past week, but this was the first time she saw a smile on his handsome face. "The donor has an oversupply, so there's even enough for a week." "Will that woman become a regular donor for my son?" "I don't know yet," the nurse replied. "Can I contact her?" Nathan asked eagerly, relieved that he no longer had to struggle to find a breast milk donor. "I'm sorry, sir, I forgot to get her phone number," the nurse admitted regretfully. "Did that woman leave an address so I can visit her at her home?" Nathan asked enthusiastically. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't have her address either." He sighed in frustration. He hoped to quickly contact the woman who provided the breast milk for his child, but it turned out that he couldn't. "May I know the name of the person who donated the breast milk to my son?" he asked, full of curiosity.

For most people, a graveyard was the most frightening place, but not for Ellie. The young woman appeared comfortable sitting in front of her child's grave. Tears flowed incessantly, as if they would never dry. Even her usually large, round eyes now looked very small and swollen. "Nick, I want to find a job, so I don't get bored at home. I want to earn money and make a beautiful headstone for you." Ellie hugged the mound of earth over her child's grave, hoping to release the longing that suffocated her. No matter how many people said she must let go, she still couldn't bear to let her son go. "Nick darling, I am leaving now as it's already late. Forgive me for not being able to hug you. If only time could be turned back, I would have taken you to the hospital that morning, so you could be treated right away." She stroked Nick's nameplate and then hugged it for a long time. She wiped her tears and then smiled. "I am going home now. I'll come back tomorrow. I still miss you so m

It had been ten days, but the pain in her foot had not subsided, making it difficult for Ellie to walk."Ellie," called a man.She was uncertain when she heard someone call her name. However, she still stopped and turned around."Hi, how are you?" asked the man with a friendly demeanor."Good," she replied with a slight smile."Do you remember me?" The kind-faced doctor smiled warmly and asked."Hi doc," she replied. Although her condition was very bad that night, she could not forget the doctor who had tried to save her child."Yes, I'm Dr. Robert. It's nice to see you again. How is your foot?" Robert asked, looking at her foot.As Ellie passed by him, he vividly remembered the young woman. Robert called out to her because he saw her walking with a dragging foot."It's still painful, doc, but maybe it'll get better soon," she smiled, looking down at her foot clad in flip-flops."Have you had it re-examined?" Robert asked, noticing that Ellie's foot was swollen, bruised, and

"What do you mean by euthanasia?" Robert was stunned when he heard Ellie's request. "I'm afraid of injections, but if it's a lethal injection, I'm not scared," she said desperately. "I understand your feelings, but you shouldn't be like this. You need to love yourself. Think about your son. He'll feel sad if he knows his mother is crying," Robert stood up and approached her. She quickly wiped away her tears. She remained silent while Robert checked her heartbeat, stomach, and blood pressure. "Low blood pressure 90/70, stomach acid rising," said Robert after examining Ellie. "Is there any hope for death, doc?" She asked eagerly. "Enough with that already," Robert chided, looking at her angrily. "Those who are dead, buried, they cry and beg to live again. You, who are still alive, are busy wanting to die." Robert said irritably. "I was just asking, doc," she grinned. "You must not stress, eat on time, and get enough rest," commanded Robert. "Yes, doc," she replied.

Ellie's heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest when she saw the figure standing at the door. The man looked like a demon who could kill her with a heart attack. She grew increasingly upset when she saw the man's face, which showed no remorse even though he had almost given her a heart attack. "Excuse me, sir," she said as she exited when the man stepped aside for her. The man simply stared at her as she walked away. "Who was that?" Nathan asked as he sat down in front of Robert. As a pediatrician, it was unlikely for Robert to have an adult patient like the woman just now. "Oh, her. She's pretty, isn't she?" Robert didn't answer. Instead, he asked back. "Your type is young girls?" Nathan teased. "Even if they're young, they can still have children. She is very kind and a good mother. After all, age doesn't guarantee that someone will be more mature and responsible for their own child." Robert looked at Nathan with a cynical smile. Nathan remained silen

Nathan walked with light steps into his family's luxurious mansion. A smile spread across his lips as he saw a middle-aged woman sitting on the living room sofa, savoring a cup of green tea.His mood was lifted, simply because he heard that his wife had provided breast milk for their baby. The anger that had once peaked vanished in an instant. "Did you just come back from the hospital?" asked Madison. Seeing the happiness radiating from her handsome son's face, she knew that Nathan was in a good mood. "Yes, Mom," Nathan replied with a smile. He then sat on a different sofa in front of the beautiful woman, despite her age. "How is my grandson?" Madison inquired about her grandson. "Robert said that my child's condition has greatly improved. His weight has increased by 300 grams." "Really? I'm so happy to hear that. Tomorrow, I'll go to the hospital; I miss seeing him." The news Nathan brought truly made Madison happy. For the past two days, she hadn't been to the hospital

After three days of taking the medication prescribed by Dr. Robert, Ellie felt a noticeable improvement in her foot. She could finally put weight on it while walking. But the medication made her drowsy. Or maybe it wasn't just the pills—maybe it was the emptiness of having nothing to do. She used to have Nick to care for. Changing his pants whenever he peed, bathing him, playing with her sweet little boy. Now, all of it was just a memory. She wanted to accept it. But it was so hard. "Nick… I miss you. I miss you so much." She gazed at her son's photo, her fingers gently tracing his tiny face. If only she'd had a smartphone back then, she would have captured hundreds of pictures of him. She could have watched videos of his first giggles, his cries, the way he kicked his legs when he was excited, the moment he first learned to roll over. But she never got to document those moments. All she had was an outdated phone. Ellie only had four printed photos of Nick—fo

Ellie froze as Tory’s sharp words cut through her like shards of glass.“I don’t need to either. I don’t like being touched by someone like you,” Simon’s other sister, Tina, added coldly. Both women looked at her with pure disgust.Ellie simply nodded in understanding and turned toward the kitchen to make a drink. She was used to the insults, the mockery. She had heard them countless times before. But that didn’t make them hurt any less.Especially now—when her emotions were already fragile, shattered by the unbearable loss of her son.Ellie rushed to the kitchen. She didn’t immediately start making the drinks—she cried first. Sometimes, she wondered how much longer she could endure this family. A family that never missed a chance to insult and belittle her. A family that claimed to value education but treated people like animals. Was this what highly educated people were supposed to be like? She quickly wiped her tears away when she heard Wendy calling her name. “Hurry u

Madison smiled at her only son. "What took you so long?" "The traffic was bad, Mom," Nathan replied as he sat down beside her. "I stopped by the baby room earlier," he continued, glancing around. "The nurse told me the wet nurse is here." Nathan scanned the room, searching for the woman who had been feeding his son. "Yes, we've already met your son's wet nurse," Madison said, her gaze shifting toward Ellie. Nathan frowned slightly. "Where is she, Mom?" he asked, his eyes widening with anticipation. The tightness in his chest eased at the thought of finally meeting the person who had been caring for his baby. It meant he wouldn't have to search for a new wet nurse after all. Madison smiled and gestured toward Ellie. "Here she is. Her name is Ellie."Nathan stared at Ellie, his brows furrowing as disbelief flashed across his face. He rubbed his eyes a few times, as if trying to make sure he wasn't imagining things. "I'm going to hire Ellie as a babysitter and wet

Robert glanced at his ringing phone. The moment he saw the caller's name, he answered without hesitation."Hello," he said."Hello, Dr. Robert. I wanted to ask… is Miss Ellie with you?" The nurse's voice was polite but hesitant.Robert frowned. "Yes, what's the matter?" He stood up from his seat and moved a few steps away from Ellie."Doctor, I-I checked the surveillance camera," the nurse admitted nervously.Robert's expression darkened. "How did you even know I was with Ellie?" His tone sharpened with irritation."I'm sorry," the nurse stammered. "I only checked the cameras because—""You were watching me through hospital surveillance?" Robert cut in, his voice low and displeased. "How dare you invade my privacy like that?"The nurse fell silent, realizing she had overstepped."Please, don't be angry or misunderstand," the nurse pleaded. Although fear gripped her, Ellie forced herself to look at the man calling her. A relieved smile spread across her face as she recognized the kind-hearted doctor approaching her in his white coat."How are you?" Robert asked, his expression stern. "I told you to come back in four or five days for a check-up. Why didn't you?"Ellie lowered her gaze. "Sorry, doc," she murmured, unable to come up with an excuse.Robert sighed, then crouched in front of her. "How's your foot?""What are you doing?" Ellie remained silent, listening as the nurse in the white uniform spoke."Yesterday, when I last saw him, he didn’t look like this," Ellie murmured, watching the baby grasp her index finger. "His little face wasn’t as handsome as it is now."The nurse chuckled. "Of course he's handsome! His father is incredibly good-looking. Sharp nose, red lips, brown eyes, and even brown hair. He’s tall too, just like a movie star."The pretty nurse spoke dreamily, clearly picturing Nathan. He had become the hospital staff’s unofficial heartthrob, especially since he had been visiting his baby’s room every day for the past three weeks.Ellie simply smiled and nodded. But then the nurse’s gaze fell on Ellie’s lips. "What happened to your lips?" She asked, noticing the dried cut.Ellie touched them absently. "I fell," she said with a small smile. The nurse gasped. "Oh no, you have to be more careful!" Ellie sat quietly in the chair outside the treatment room in deep thought. She had no idea who was inside. In this hospital, no one paid her any attention. People came and went as they pleased. For her, it was the safest place to stay while searching for work. But anxiety gnawed at her, what if security questioned her? Visiting hours had already ended.Sleep weighed heavily on her eyelids. Without shifting her position, she dozed off, her back slumped against the chair. But moments later, she jolted awake, a sense of unease creeping in. What if someone stole her belongings?A throbbing pain spread across her chest, reminding her that she hadn’t pumped breast milk since the afternoon. Her breasts felt swollen and sore, and her clothes were already damp with leaked milk. She hurried to the nursing room and began pumping. Since it had been hours, she managed to collect 750 milliliters—a surprisingly large amount. The sight of it filled her with relief. Smiling, she quickly took the mi

Ellie felt a rare sense of happiness at the orphanage. For a brief moment, surrounded by the laughter of children, the weight on her heart felt lighter. Seeing their bright smiles helped her forget—if only for a little while—the burdens she carried. Grateful for their joy, she had made sure to bring snacks and candies. As soon as she handed them out, the children eagerly scrambled for the treats, their excitement contagious. As she watched them, her gaze drifted to a caregiver holding a tiny baby."Ma'am, how old is the baby? Is it a girl or a boy?" Ellie asked, stepping closer. The caregiver, a woman in her forties, gently rocked the infant. "She's a girl. Two months old. Her name is Aliya."Her expression darkened slightly as she continued. "Aliya was abandoned by her parents at our doorstep. We found her at dawn… unconscious."Ellie's heart clenched. "That's awful," she whispered, looking at the fragile little girl."Her parents were cruel," the woman said sadly. "She was left

"Why donate them? Nick's clothes can still be used for his younger sibling later," Simon objected."Just buy new ones for his sibling. Poor Melissa—she wouldn't want hand-me-downs," Ellie explained.Simon frowned. "I wasn't talking about Melissa's child. I meant ours—so we won't have to buy baby supplies again."Ellie laughed, but there was no real joy in it—only an attempt to mask the pain tightening in her chest. And if we're late, there's a 10% penalty."I also can't bear to look at Nick's clothes. Every time I see them, it just… hurts. That's why I want to donate them to the orphanage.
