My day of freedom ends up being used to stay in bed all day and that night, Ash sleeps in my bed again. This morning when we woke up, we got out of bed straight away because today is “learn to defend yourself and kill your enemy” day. I am extremely nervous about this training thing but it needs to be done.
When I am getting dressed I go through a drawer of cloths and pick out a black long sleeve shirt and black tights, then I grab a pair of Alex’s shoes and a pair of socks. When I finish getting dressed I head to the bathroom and wash my face then I pull my hair up into a tight ponytail so it won’t get in the way. When I am finished I meet Ash out the front with the cars. We choose to take his car because it’s better for long distance travel. It takes us two hours to get to this place, which is in the woods and hardly has anyone there so at least we won’t be embarrassed. There seems to be a couple of workers moving about outside the front of the camp. A couple of them introduce themselves before taking us inside to meet our instructor. When the instructor walks out of the main building I’m about ready to turn and run. The man standing before me is hideously amazing he obviously has been in many battles and survived. This man is likely to determine whether Ash and I live or die. The instructor steps towards us, “The name is Riley and I am your instructor you will be here for one week and you will learn how to defend yourself and kill your enemy. You are to listen to me and be where you have to be on time. You will be working together and against each other, so you know how your companion works. Training begins in one hour.” He points to a middle age woman and says “Ellie will take you to your rooms.” When we arrive at our rooms it is obvious that this place is unpopular because you can smell the dust that has settled since the last visitor. We are told to get into the combat uniforms and then taken down stairs. As we keep moving you can see that the place is massive. It’s at least four stories high, it covered twenty hectares of land. Every room is at least 5 meters by 5 meters, some slightly bigger. When we get to the training compound it’s obvious what we are going to learn first. Hand to hand combat. Riley is already in the middle of the room, his staring at the clock. We got there thirty seconds before he said to meet him there, so we are not late. We walk over to him and wait for further instructions. “Right, today we are going to start with hand to hand combat, you will learn the techniques then use them against each other, today will only end if one or both of you walk away injured. Okay?” “Yes.” We both reply at the same time. Riley seems to find this amusing because his ‘all the time frown’ turns up at the corners creating a half smile. Riley looks about twenty-two, with dark short hair like Ash’s but his has brown streaks through it. He has a large nose that pops out of his head and full lips. He is tall and very muscular, with a ripped body. His shirt is already stuck to his body from sweat letting you see his abs. Riley is very hot but I think Ash is hotter, just! When he is ready to begin he starts talking “First you need to be able stand without being easily pushed over, so I want you to spread your legs so they are shoulder width apart. Are you both right handed?” “Yes.” We say again at the same time. “Good.” He nods and continues “Put your right foot in front of your left and slightly bend your knees. Then put your right hand in front of your face and left hand slightly in front of your right but lower as well.” Once we were in the correct position he showed us the basic techniques to punch. We practice this for a very long time. My body is aching and my knees are shaking and I’m pretty sure my brain has turned to mosh. I look over and it looks like Ash hasn’t even broken a sweat! He glances this way and a small smirk graces his lips. I must look like a drowned rat. I can feel my hair clinging to my forward slick with sweat. My shirt is not much better, lucky I wore black, it should hide the sweat marks. Riley says something but I’m too exhausted to hear anything. I glance at the clock it’s already nearly lunchtime and we are still on the basic techniques for punching. Riley yells another instruction that I half pay attention to. Before mumbling under my breath. “This is going to be a long week!” Finally a whistle goes off and I look up startled. Riley is standing in front of me, whistle between his teeth. “We are finished for the session. Go have some lunch and be back within the hour.” His gravelly voice causes butterflies to appear in my stomach, I can’t tell if it has something to do with excitement or my fear of him. I quickly make my way to the door with Ash following close behind me. I’m definitely looking forward to some yummy food.Walking into the little cafeteria, lunch smells amazing and my grumbling tummy agrees. Ash and I both get servings of salad, potato bake, pasta salad and some meat, which include chicken, sausages and ham. I eat lunch at a leisurely pace not wanting the time to end, but it does and we are moving quickly back to the training compound. Riley said we would be doing more of the basic hand-to-hand combat but he never said we would be using boxing bags. My knuckles are going to be raw after today. He demonstrates how to punch the bag because it movies when you hit it. Finally we are allowed to hit the bags, and they are heavier than they look. While Riley is talking to Ash I try to kick it but I completely miss I steal a glance at them to see if they notice but I don’t think they did. When Riley starts to watch me I see a sense of approval in his facial expressions. I must be doing something right, so I decide to test my luck and try to kick it again but my foot doesn’t want to kick the b
When I wake up in the morning, Ash must have come into my room and just joined me during the night because he’s lying on his back with his arm around me, while my head rest against his chest, my body curled up against his body. He must feel my body tense because when I go to move he says “Good morning Nat is your body sore from yesterday?” “I don’t know Ash, because you won’t let me move.” Slowly he lifts his arm and lets me escape but as soon as I move my legs I cry out in pain, oh the agony. It shots up through my legs and down my spine, my arms are also sore. And my knuckles are bloody from the punching bag. I’m in agony; I collapse to the group and lay there in a ball until the pain starts to pass. Then as I go to move and get myself a paracetamol Ash appears at my side with it and a glass of water. Through the rest of the morning I slowly walk around getting ready, for another horrible day of exercise. When we get to Riley, he says we will be doing knife throwing. We follow
As we unpacked the car, I can’t help but notice that while we have been unpacking, Ash has been putting in other things such as an extra tyre and petrol tins, jump starter cables and stuff like that. What is he planning; I’m sure he will tell me later when we settle down. Finally we are inside, when Ash drops a bomb. “I’m not sure if you have noticed but we are going to the mountains to start looking for these monsters. It would be better for us to eliminate some of the monster population, so there is less to worry about later.” “Why didn’t you tell me that in the car?” I ask sounding pissed off. I could tell he is keeping a secret, does he not realise that that hurts more. “Because I thought you would prefer to hear the bad news here, instead of in the car where we could get distracted.” He replies in a matter of fact kind of way. “Well at least you’re thinking of road safety.” I retort back. “I’m sorry okay; I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.” “Yeah right.’ I say angrily.
I remain numb as it sit on the couch starting at the picture of the family. We looked so happy. I’m pretty sure I’m in denial about the whole situation. Ash turns the TV off, “Do you think we can win this war?” I ask sadly “Yes, I do believe we can win this war because if we don’t the monsters will destroy the planet.” He says with a hint of anger in his voice. “I’m sorry about your family, sometimes I wish we weren’t Ma Vista’s because we would have a good life, imagine a life where you and I meet and we fell in love, because we liked each other, not because of the connection. Do you think that’s possible to fall in love, like if I fell in love with you, not because of the connection but because I thought you were amazing and beautiful and everything.” He says the last bit with a hopeful voice. “Yes, I think it’s possible otherwise the website would have said “Ma Vista’s can’t fall in love with anyone except the opposite Ma Vista.” If it said that then we would be in troubl
The next day Ash and I have a practice session with the weapons that we got for Riley, and then we have showers. When I finish my shower I walk out and realise that I forgot to grab my dress and underwear, which means I have to walk down the hallway with my towel wrapped around me. So that’s what I do, well what I try to do, it doesn’t work every well because as soon as I open the door I see Ash waiting for the shower. That is when I realise that the towel only just covers my butt and my chest and it doesn’t leave much for the imagination. I try to walk out with my head up but it doesn’t stay that way for long. As soon as I put my head down I run straight into Ash, I look up startled and he looks just as startled. Then he takes in my predicament and laughs; he then puts a hand over his eyes and walks around me to the bathroom. I half walk, half run into my bedroom. I quickly put my bra and undies on then take my time doing my makeup and hair. My makeup is only soft and hardly notic
By the time we got home I was a complete mess, tears were streaming down my face, my eyes were puffy and my nose was snotty. I didn’t want to get out of the car as it meant that I was one step closer to accepting we were about to risk our lives to fight these monsters. Ash eventually made his way around the side of the car and pulled me out. Lifting me up bridal style I could help the rush of butterflies in my stomach even though I was a complete mess. Step by step he gets us inside and lays me down on the sofa. While I lay on the sofa crying Ash starts to pack the car. That night I can’t sleep, every noise I hear makes me jump out of my skin. Every now and then there’s a crunching sound like shoes stepping on crunchy autumn leaves or a snapping of a twig. Sometimes there’s even a loud bang of a closing car door or someone maybe taking the garbage bins out for the garbage truck that will come in the morning. Finally I can’t take it anymore and I give in to the temptation. I cree
We’re about an hour into our trip when I say “When your family died and well, you know, you took all that stuff and the car. How did you pay for everything? Like the petrol and the hotels and the houses you rented?” “When I was grabbing stuff, I found my mums and dad’s wallets, my dad was rich, some people would say he was loaded, so that money helped with everything. Plus all the assets became mine when I turned 18. My grandfather was in charge of it till I became of age. Then it was handed over to me.” “Wow, I wonder if my family had anything like that organised. Not that they would have had much, especially with the house burning down.” “I guess we will probably find out when you turn 18 or maybe 21. Sometimes it’s a bit later so you’ve hopefully matured and are not going to waste the money.” “I think that makes sense, no good getting money and then spending it all on holidays and stuff like that when you could use it to get a house or a car if you haven’t got one of those y
It’s early morning when I wake up to soft patches of sunlight that has filtered through the trees and the fabric of the tent lighting up the area. Ash is still sound asleep beside me. Last night I had woken up once to find Ash asleep beside me. It had gotten rather cold, so I had snuggled up against him in hope of some body warmth but that hadn’t worked so I had to wake him up, then snuggled against him and he had wrapped his arms around me and pulled the blanket tightly around us. It had been rather nice and comfortable. The wind had picked up last night and at one point I thought the wind might blow the tent over and we would end up flying through the air but that didn’t happen. After I had fallen asleep again I had a weird dream about a monster, it was hiding in the woods about 20 meters away from our campsite in the North direction. After finding that out the dream ended and I continued to sleep peacefully until just now. The sunlight shining down on the tent was making it glow
While Cooper places all of his luggage and possessions into his car that is parked about 5 kilometres away from the campsite. I grab my new bow and have a bit of a practice. My ankle is still a little sore and my rib is taking it’s time to heal, but all I want to do is get away from this place and far away from Aidan, whoever that guy was. With the bow in my hand I feel complete as I walk into the undergrowth of the trees, that once was my greatest enemy, now my greatest ally. I set up several targets, carving crosses into the bark of the trees, some in front, some behind and some to the sides, so I can practice speed and change of direction. I start with the ones in front making sure that I have my usual rhythm then I speed up until I am shooting 1 arrow a second. Every arrow I release thunks as it hits its target. Then I start to move around changing directions really fast and still every arrow hits it’s target. While I do this I let go of all of my frustrations, confusion, anger
We sit in silence for a few minutes while Cooper processes what I have shared with him. I’m secretly hoping that he has finished asking questions but I’m wrong. “What do the monsters do?” “That’s a hard one, monsters are the cause of human deaths and abductions.” Cooper sucks in a sharp breath, then releases “How can I help you?” “Well first off, we need to find Ash, he will be the only other person in these mountains and if that’s not true, we are in trouble.” Cooper nods several times then without further conversation stands up and walks outside. I lay there stunned at how quickly he believed me “Cooper?” I call out “Yes.” Is his reply, but it sounded very far away. “What are you doing?” “I am starting to pack away all the stuff outside so we can make a quick get away tomorrow. If you wouldn’t mind, could you start shoving all the stuff that is not in a bag, into a bag? That would be lovely. I will tell you more when I am finished out here.” As I go through all of
This time my sleep is plagued by nightmares and dreams alike. But I only remember one dream, that still plagues my mind when I wake up. I cry out from shock as I am pulled out of the nightmare. My whole body is trembling and I am covered in sweat, which has drenched my clothing making them stick to my body. The image still haunts me, Ash calling out my name, his hand reaching down to grab my hand as I fall. Then suddenly the dream freezes and words appear in the sky in blood red writing. ‘There coming’ then it flickers ‘were coming, be ready.’ Then suddenly I am falling again, than just before I hit the ground it blacks out. That’s when I woke up. I lie there as still as possible, too scared to move. What if the dream was real? What if it was a warning? This dream makes me more motivated to speed up my recovery and find Ash, my adrenaline speeds up and I begin to feel restless. I have to find Ash but I will need Cooper’s help, which means I will have to tell him all the things he do
Finding the bow and quiver had excited me and I wanted to get out here and find Ash and hope that he has also found his weapons so we can continue this war. I know I still have to relax my ankle and my back as well as my rib. So I will hopefully still be able to stay with Cooper for a day or two, the problem with that will be him asking questions, I can’t continue to lie to him, I have never been good with lies. I also fear growing to attach to him, which will cause a lot of problems as well. Sometimes I wish Cooper could see the monsters but I know he can’t. If he could that would mean he is the bad Ma Vista and he would have killed me while I was unconscious. So far this power I have is horrible and I could endanger a lot of people, especially the ones close to my heart, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. It’s an hour later and I smell something really good coming from outside, I also have not seen Cooper since the small incident that happened earlier; I hope he is no
I cry out as I open my eyes, and I find myself in my own tent, sweat covering my body. That was the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I sit up and look over and find Natalie still sound asleep. I have to get out of here and go hunting before I freak myself out even more. I grab my gear for hunting and head out towards my dad’s hunting trail that he made before he died. Walking along I set up several traps so I have a high chance of catching something for Natalie and myself to eat. So I stumble through the woods which are still filled with darkness from the night before which causes me to remember my dream. I couldn’t stab Natalie not unless something had over powered me. Plus Natalie was wearing the same cloths in the dream, to what she is wearing now. She is just so beautiful I couldn’t imagine hurting her; I even hate seeing her in pain. As I walk back towards my camp and Natalie, I check the traps and what I find is a young deer. This is going to be great breakfast, I grab
“Natalie?” I say, trying to talk to her. “Yes, I was just thinking.” She says randomly, I chuckle at how stupid she just sounded. She roles over and winces from what I believe is pain. “We need to do something about your injuries are you comfortable enough with me to let me do it.” I ask she looks me in the eye and nods. As I check over her body I notice that she has a sprained ankle or twisted ankle and might also have a broken rib. She also has several bruises adorning her body, especially over her back. She ask me what time it was that I found her, but I have no idea what time that was because I didn’t have a watch so I just make it up. Her face seems to pale from the information I give her; I wonder how long she had been lying there before I had found her. “When I found you at the bottom of the hill, my first thought was that you were dead. Then I noticed that you were breathing, so I calmed down a bit then I started wondering what you were doing in the mountains, that
I was on my yearly hunt, but normally I would be with my family, except they died a few weeks ago. I don’t know what or how it happened I had just come home and they were all lying on the floor with pools of blood surrounding them. At first I had thought someone had murdered them but now I am not so sure. As I walk along a path my dad had made when we first started hunting, I find a rabbit trail that looks really fresh. I follow it through the woods until I see something that makes my insides freeze. There only three meters away from me lying on her back is a girl, her arms and legs going in many different angles. Slowly I walk towards the body, unsure whether she is alive or dead. As I get closer I am relieved to see a small rise and fall of the girls chest. What the hell is she doing here alone? When I am standing above her I look down at the girls face and I am struck with a strange emotion I have never felt before. But the girl lying before me is gorgeous; I have never seen any
As it gets later and I still am unable to stand, Cooper asks me if I would prefer to stay with him or if I wanted to leave. “Staying with you is probably safer then going out there into the wild when I can hardly walk.” He nods his head in agreement. I glance up for the first time and actually look at him. He has bright orange hair, greyish-blue eyes and a small amount of freckles that dash across his cheeks, his hair is cut short like Ash’s but his fringe is shorter. He is lean and muscular, I should have figured that out when he said he carried me for three hours. He looks very athletic and is pretty attractive, he also has a nice personality and is very caring, and I immediately take a liking to him. Before we go to sleep Cooper moves the sleeping bag so I have my own room, he then puts all his luggage in the middle and makes himself a bed on the other side. Before I go to sleep I have to ask “Cooper?” “Yes.” he mumbles. “Why are you in the mountains?” “I came up here e
I wake up to find that I am in someone’s arms, at first I think that Ash has found me, but I can tell by his deodorant that, that’s not the case. My body aches all over; it feels like I have broken every bone in my body. But at least I feel secure in who ever these arms belong too. So I drift back to sleep trying to get rid of the throbbing headache that now plagues me. When I wake up again, I am still in the stranger’s arms and he is still walking steadily, I feel slightly better this time. With only a small headache but my whole body is still on fire. And it flares up every time this guy takes a step. After what feels like an hour we arrive at a small clearing, in the clearing is a small tent, not much different from Ash’s and mine. He must sense that I am awake because he starts talking to me. “Hi, you’re lucky I found you, a few hours longer and you would have died.” His voice is smooth and light it almost most makes me go back to sleep. “You know, you could actually say
