I was on my yearly hunt, but normally I would be with my family, except they died a few weeks ago. I don’t know what or how it happened I had just come home and they were all lying on the floor with pools of blood surrounding them. At first I had thought someone had murdered them but now I am not so sure.
As I walk along a path my dad had made when we first started hunting, I find a rabbit trail that looks really fresh. I follow it through the woods until I see something that makes my insides freeze. There only three meters away from me lying on her back is a girl, her arms and legs going in many different angles. Slowly I walk towards the body, unsure whether she is alive or dead. As I get closer I am relieved to see a small rise and fall of the girls chest. What the hell is she doing here alone? When I am standing above her I look down at the girls face and I am struck with a strange emotion I have never felt before. But the girl lying before me is gorgeous; I have never seen anything or anyone as beautiful as this girl, with the golden locks, clear face, small pinkish lips and adorable nose. I decide I can’t leave her there or she will die. So I pick her up and start to walk towards my campsite. After about two hours of walking my arms start to get sore, so I lay her down softly and walk around and stretch my arms. When I believe they are strong enough to carry her again I lift her back up and start walking. It’s only about ten minutes later, that I sense her starting to wake. I start to pick up my pace hoping I can reach my campsite before she wakes up, but that doesn’t happen. Seriously the world must be against me this year because nothing good has happened to me so far, and I thought finding this girl might be a good thing, but when I remember the bow and quiver, I change my mind. When she doesn’t open her eyes for a while and then her heart beat slows down to a steady pace I know she has fallen back to sleep, from pain or tiredness I’m not sure. When she wakes again I decide that it would probably be better for her to stay awake for a while so I talk to her. “Hi you’re lucky I found you, a few more hours and you would have been dead.” Well that’s a nice introduction I think to myself. When she doesn’t answer for a while I think she is purposely ignoring me, so I say “You know you could at least say thank you!” Still I don’t expect her to reply but to my surprise she answers “Sorry I am just a bit confused, that’s all.” Her voice is like a melody, my whole body gets lost in her melody and I sort of feel like dancing, and I felt that if she continued to talk I would be put to sleep. I also notice she didn’t say thank you so when I hear a soft “Thank you.” Mumbled I chuckle, this girl is very confused right now, but at least she is being polite. It’s not long before we reach my campsite and I feel her stiffen “How do I know, your not going to kill me?” she asks. It’s a fair enough question considering I am a stranger. “You will just have to trust me.” I say with a dead panned face. I place her softly on the ground and she groans in pain, I feel like I am the one inflicting pain on her, I feel so bad I just want it to stop. But as I think about all the injuries she has sustained I think about my family who probably felt the same pain or worse. My father who had, had his throat sliced open. My mother who had cuts all up her arms and a massive stab wound on her abdomen, my little brother who also has his throat torn open spraying blood all over his face and the floor. As soon the police and ambulance had arrived they had shipped me off to a therapist and physiologist to help my emotional levels. Seriously people these days don’t notice or care how you feel, they just make you do stuff they think is right. That’s why I found this girl interesting not only had she been alone, lying on the ground unconscious in the middle of the woods, but also when she had woken and found out I was a stranger, she didn’t struggle and try and get away from me; she had just asked a question. “How do I know you are not going to kill me?” Honestly I think she asked just to see what I would say, I am fairly certain she knew I wouldn’t hurt her, whether that was because I had picked her up and was carrying her or because I had started talking to her just as she woke up I am not sure but what ever it was, I am now infatuated with this girl and I will protect her with my life. When I glance back at the girl I notice she has rolled over, she is probably scared to look at my face fearing I am some ugly murdering psychopath who hurts people that are in the mountains at this time of the year. While I am day dreaming about being some axe murder I hear a soft voice talking to me “Umm... May I ask, what is your name?” I laugh softly as she stumbles over her words and the awkwardness in her voice, she sounds so nervous. “The names Cooper, what’s yours?” “Natalie.” She replies, oh, that is a nice name. I glance down and see that her cheeks are slightly flushed. “Natalie...” I say softly getting the feel for it. “That’s a nice name, not nice, lovely name, that’s more like it.” Her cheeks go even brighter and she shoves her face into the pillow. “Thank you, I like your name as well.” She says muffled by the pillow. I wonder why she is so embarrassed, yet another wonder about this girl.“Natalie?” I say, trying to talk to her. “Yes, I was just thinking.” She says randomly, I chuckle at how stupid she just sounded. She roles over and winces from what I believe is pain. “We need to do something about your injuries are you comfortable enough with me to let me do it.” I ask she looks me in the eye and nods. As I check over her body I notice that she has a sprained ankle or twisted ankle and might also have a broken rib. She also has several bruises adorning her body, especially over her back. She ask me what time it was that I found her, but I have no idea what time that was because I didn’t have a watch so I just make it up. Her face seems to pale from the information I give her; I wonder how long she had been lying there before I had found her. “When I found you at the bottom of the hill, my first thought was that you were dead. Then I noticed that you were breathing, so I calmed down a bit then I started wondering what you were doing in the mountains, that
I cry out as I open my eyes, and I find myself in my own tent, sweat covering my body. That was the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I sit up and look over and find Natalie still sound asleep. I have to get out of here and go hunting before I freak myself out even more. I grab my gear for hunting and head out towards my dad’s hunting trail that he made before he died. Walking along I set up several traps so I have a high chance of catching something for Natalie and myself to eat. So I stumble through the woods which are still filled with darkness from the night before which causes me to remember my dream. I couldn’t stab Natalie not unless something had over powered me. Plus Natalie was wearing the same cloths in the dream, to what she is wearing now. She is just so beautiful I couldn’t imagine hurting her; I even hate seeing her in pain. As I walk back towards my camp and Natalie, I check the traps and what I find is a young deer. This is going to be great breakfast, I grab
Finding the bow and quiver had excited me and I wanted to get out here and find Ash and hope that he has also found his weapons so we can continue this war. I know I still have to relax my ankle and my back as well as my rib. So I will hopefully still be able to stay with Cooper for a day or two, the problem with that will be him asking questions, I can’t continue to lie to him, I have never been good with lies. I also fear growing to attach to him, which will cause a lot of problems as well. Sometimes I wish Cooper could see the monsters but I know he can’t. If he could that would mean he is the bad Ma Vista and he would have killed me while I was unconscious. So far this power I have is horrible and I could endanger a lot of people, especially the ones close to my heart, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. It’s an hour later and I smell something really good coming from outside, I also have not seen Cooper since the small incident that happened earlier; I hope he is no
This time my sleep is plagued by nightmares and dreams alike. But I only remember one dream, that still plagues my mind when I wake up. I cry out from shock as I am pulled out of the nightmare. My whole body is trembling and I am covered in sweat, which has drenched my clothing making them stick to my body. The image still haunts me, Ash calling out my name, his hand reaching down to grab my hand as I fall. Then suddenly the dream freezes and words appear in the sky in blood red writing. ‘There coming’ then it flickers ‘were coming, be ready.’ Then suddenly I am falling again, than just before I hit the ground it blacks out. That’s when I woke up. I lie there as still as possible, too scared to move. What if the dream was real? What if it was a warning? This dream makes me more motivated to speed up my recovery and find Ash, my adrenaline speeds up and I begin to feel restless. I have to find Ash but I will need Cooper’s help, which means I will have to tell him all the things he do
We sit in silence for a few minutes while Cooper processes what I have shared with him. I’m secretly hoping that he has finished asking questions but I’m wrong. “What do the monsters do?” “That’s a hard one, monsters are the cause of human deaths and abductions.” Cooper sucks in a sharp breath, then releases “How can I help you?” “Well first off, we need to find Ash, he will be the only other person in these mountains and if that’s not true, we are in trouble.” Cooper nods several times then without further conversation stands up and walks outside. I lay there stunned at how quickly he believed me “Cooper?” I call out “Yes.” Is his reply, but it sounded very far away. “What are you doing?” “I am starting to pack away all the stuff outside so we can make a quick get away tomorrow. If you wouldn’t mind, could you start shoving all the stuff that is not in a bag, into a bag? That would be lovely. I will tell you more when I am finished out here.” As I go through all of
All I can think of is running, I can hear it coming behind me, giving chase like any predatory animal would do if they sensed easy prey. I know it’s catching me, the heavy footsteps following in my wake. I scan the wilderness looking for a way to escape this nightmare, but there’s nothing, no tree high enough, no branch long enough. My only hope is to keep running. Flashing back to seconds earlier, the look on my best friend’s face as the beast appeared from the shadows of the trees is all I can see. We were in the mountains camping for our summer vacation, enjoying our time away from school. When this summer ends, I will be going into senior year, getting ready for college and life ahead. Now everything has changed. Alexandria and I were just sitting on the logs that surround the flickering flames of the fire. We were roasting marshmallows and enjoying our freedom away from home. When it emerged. Alexandria saw it first. At first it looked like a bear, but it was too big. Then it s
It’s morning and I don’t remember anything that happened last night, so when my alarm goes off saying it’s 7am, I climb out of bed and head downstairs to the kitchen where the rest of my family should be. It’s a surprise when I enter the room and there’s no smell of toast or coffee which my mum has every morning before work. No smell of pancakes that my brother, Zac, cooks every morning before school. After I search the kitchen with no sign of any of them I go to their bedrooms and find them all still sound asleep. Is my clock wrong? I check mums nightstand and see that her clock reads the same as mine. Nope. Then it hits me, it’s the first day of summer vacation. Well that’s just great! There’s nothing I can do now so I go back and lay down on my bed. As I waited I glanced over at the mirrors on my wardrobe. My golden mane of curls looked like a tumble weed on my head and while this hair usually framed my pale face nicely, made it look like I’d tossed and turned all night. My usual s
Climbing out of the car I try not to stare at the “good looking man” at the pump across from me. As I’m trying not to look like a complete stalker while filling up the car I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning slowly I see a familiar car pulling in behind me. Oh no, Nick. Okay, I know what you probably thinking. “Natalie, you have a crush on Nick!” Well that’s not true! The truth is, I use to have a crush on him when I was younger, but I’m over that now. Even though he is still pretty hot, I am over it, I swear. Nick is 18, one year older than me. As Nick gets out of the car I make a run for the cash register. I know Nick will recognise my Swift out the front and realise I’m inside. He will most likely come looking for me because we haven’t seen each other for one year, but I don’t want to see him right now. As I pay for the petrol I step backwards and bump into someone. I turn around and look straight into the good looking man’s deep brown eyes. At first I’m

As it gets later and I still am unable to stand, Cooper asks me if I would prefer to stay with him or if I wanted to leave. “Staying with you is probably safer then going out there into the wild when I can hardly walk.” He nods his head in agreement. I glance up for the first time and actually look at him. He has bright orange hair, greyish-blue eyes and a small amount of freckles that dash across his cheeks, his hair is cut short like Ash’s but his fringe is shorter. He is lean and muscular, I should have figured that out when he said he carried me for three hours. He looks very athletic and is pretty attractive, he also has a nice personality and is very caring, and I immediately take a liking to him. Before we go to sleep Cooper moves the sleeping bag so I have my own room, he then puts all his luggage in the middle and makes himself a bed on the other side. Before I go to sleep I have to ask “Cooper?” “Yes.” he mumbles. “Why are you in the mountains?” “I came up here e
I wake up to find that I am in someone’s arms, at first I think that Ash has found me, but I can tell by his deodorant that, that’s not the case. My body aches all over; it feels like I have broken every bone in my body. But at least I feel secure in who ever these arms belong too. So I drift back to sleep trying to get rid of the throbbing headache that now plagues me. When I wake up again, I am still in the stranger’s arms and he is still walking steadily, I feel slightly better this time. With only a small headache but my whole body is still on fire. And it flares up every time this guy takes a step. After what feels like an hour we arrive at a small clearing, in the clearing is a small tent, not much different from Ash’s and mine. He must sense that I am awake because he starts talking to me. “Hi, you’re lucky I found you, a few hours longer and you would have died.” His voice is smooth and light it almost most makes me go back to sleep. “You know, you could actually say
Once out in the fresh air, I take a deep breath and zone in on all my 5 senses, I feel the warm breeze blowing my hair back from my face, smell the freshness of nature, taste the small mint that is still left in my mouth, I hear all the birds singing in the trees, all the crickets making buzzing noises in the grass surrounding me, all the larger animals running around and snapping leaves and small branches with there feet and of course the leaves rustling over head, due to the wind. I see hundreds of tree trunks, grass covered with leaves and small branches that have fallen from the trees. It is also very gloomy because it is still quite early in the morning and the sunlight rains down in patches landing in certain spots. As I daydream Ash walks up behind me and puts one of his hands on my shoulder. Snapping me back to reality. “Let’s get moving, do we have everything we need?” I run off a checklist “Sword, Shield, Bow, Quiver, Knives, water and food, including fruit and Vegetables
