"Miss Hae?" a red-headed nurse asked as she touched Hae Mina's shoulder. She looked up with a tear stained face.
"Yes?"
"Hae Jae-Woo is able to have visitors now. You may go in."
"Thank you," she choked out and followed the nurse. She was led down bright cheery halls that contradicted the truth behind their dark and menacing doors. She hated hospitals. Hospitals were filled with death. Hospitals were where people went when they finally gave up on life and wanted to die and if you were not there to die you were there because your life was about to change forever. Nothing good ever came from hospitals.
The nurse held the door open. Hae Mina brushed past her still in a partial daze. So much had changed in a matter of seconds.
She continued in, forcing her feet to move. Two other beds sat in the room, but, to Hae Mina's relief, they were vacant. Thin white sheets covered them, and a single white pillow lay at the head of each bed. She could hear the steady beeps of Hae Jae-Woo's heart monitor and let her eyes venture to his form.
He lay on a bed with a thin white sheet lying askew on top of him because his left leg was pulled into the air and wrapped in a white cast. His right arm was atop the blanket and had an IV clinging to it like a lifeline, and an oxygen tube wrapped around him wanting nothing but to remain humming and alive.
His closed eyes were dark purple and swollen and his blood drained lips were cut in various places and chapped. Dark bruises covered his face and a neck brace clung to him for its life. He shifted and the blanket slid to the side, revealing his bandaged torso. Thick white bandages wrapped around and around his head—concealing all his hair. The skin that was not swollen, bruised or covered could put a piece of paper to shame it was so white.
Her heart cracked, and tears fought to resurface. Her handsome brother in this condition was unbearable. She was used to looking delicate, but to see him so fragile, so meek, churned her stomach. He never looked like this. This was not her beautiful full-of-himself brother! This was not Jae-Woo! It couldn't be!
She took a frightened step back. He couldn't die! She took another step back, but his eyes cracked open. Their soft and alluring brown irises beckoned her to stay, so she stepped closer.
"Oppa," she whispered, trying to hide her tears, as well as her fears.
"You aren't good at acting," he whispered through cracked lips.
"Mm. How are you?"
"Miserable," he replied. She had known that by looking at him.
"Guess the meds are wearing off," she replied in a soft voice.
"Yeah." He gasped, and his face crumpled in pain.
"I'm sorry," she replied to his gasp.
"What do I do, M?" he asked his boyish voice breaking.
"What do you mean?"
"Look at me; I can't do anything. Doc. says I can't go to school, but I can't ditch the band." The beeps on the machines began to race. "They've already paid me in advance, so I have to go!"
"Shush," Hae Mina soothed, "calm down before I have them sedate you," her words were soft but teasing.
"I can't calm down, M. We are in trouble. I-I have to make it to school."
"We can work something out. Maybe they'll wait for you," she forced herself to remain calm.
"No," he tried to shake his head, but gasped. When he caught his breath again, "They wait for no man. Especially, Jiho, the leader. He is demanding. If I miss one practice at the beginning of this thing, I'll be eliminated from the band. I can't be eliminated! I have to go!" He attempted to sit up but failed and cried in pain before collapsing onto the bed.
"No," she rested her hand on his chest, "you cannot go anywhere. You must rest. We'll think of something, I promise. We'll handle this." She glided her hand over his bandaged head.
He nodded forcing the brace to stab into his neck. After a few minutes of silence, his monitor began to beat in a clam rhythm again. Silence, excluding the beeps, stretched on nigh on to an eternity before Hae Jae-Woo spoke again. "Mina," he began in a whisper. She knew whatever he was about to say was serious because he'd called her by her name and not by 'M'. "I would never seriously ask this of you under any other circumstance, but…"
"What? If I can help, I will."
"What if… Could you… Will you take my place?" her eyes widened at his words. "It's the only way to keep us from jail or worse. Jiho would imprison me and you for taking the money early and using it."
"What'd you use it on?"
"We have to pay part of the hospital bill, my manager, and the insurance companies due to the accident and I paid off our car—not that it'll do us much good now. I need you to do this."
"I understand, but do you know how dangerous this is? If I get caught, we'll be in worse trouble. It is a male only school after all," she teased.
"I know," he muttered. Hae Mina knew he missed her tone, so she continued.
"And what would our family think? This is impossible: me acting like you! Oh, how embarrassing," she dramatically lay the back of her hand on her head.
"Now, you're mocking," he laughed, then gasped. She smiled knowing he had figured out her joke. She had disguised herself as him many times before. Of course, she never attempted to stay around boys for more than one day, but she would adjust. She sighed as a thought crossed her mind. I guess I will be mistaken for him this year.
"Of course! Now, where's your uniform? I'll go to school for you tomorrow." He responded to her words with a guilty smile.
"No, it is best you wait," a new voice stated. Hae Mina's head snapped to the right and Hae Jae-Woo's smile faded. A tall man with shoulder length black hair and dark brown eyes stood before her. Hae Mina absorbed the look he had plastered to his face and didn't like it at all. He was plotting and she knew whatever it was, it would not be good.
"Who are you?" she inquired, showing her venomous attitude.
"Kyong Konu, and I am his manager. I will be handling your and his affairs and money."
"Konu, lay off," Hae Jae-Woo ordered hiding his pain and disregarding all forms of formality.
"Lie down, Hae Jae-Woo. You need rest," Mr. Kyong replied; "your sister and I will return shortly." Mr. Kyong took Hae Mina by her arm and led her from the room and into a vacant one. When the door shut, she ripped her wrist from his hand.
"What do you want?" she growled. He pushed her by her shoulders to the wall.
"Listen to me, you little brat, I have a lot riding on that boy. If he doesn't perform, Nightide will be furious. Do you even know who they are?" Hae Mina glared at him but shook her head. She had never paid much attention to Hae Jae-Woo when he spoke of them. She only knew they were currently popular and making a lot of money.
"Didn't think so, brat. Does Kyung Jiho sound familiar to you?" Hae Mina felt the heat drain from her face. "He's the heir to Kyung Industries," Mr. Kyong explained. "And other band members include family names like Naiting."
"Naiting?" her voice shook. No wonder Hae Jae-Woo was terrified. If he didn't show up, he'd end up their slave for life and her life would be a living nightmare. They would only be permitted to follow their orders. No job, except what they said. No school except what they said--at least if she stayed in the country. But she couldn't just leave. Not only did she lack the necessary passport, but she also refused to go break a contract her brother signed.
"So, you see the dilemma. And if you don't follow my every command, I will let the information slip that you and Hae Jae-Woo were…"
"Don't do that! Please! You can't do that to us!" she demanded. She did not know how he knew their secret, but he could not tell anyone. He covered her mouth and pushed her further against the wall.
"Keep your mouth shut and do what I say. If you do, you and your brother will remain safe. Understand?" He moved his hand and she nodded, hating herself. Out of the many things she hated, submitting to someone's will almost topped her list. "Good. Now, I'm going to take care of your brother till he recovers. When he can switch places with you, we'll do so, but until then you are Hae Jae-Woo. Do you understand? Now, you will withdraw from your University and I will send a note to the Mr. Naiting, letting him know of the accident. We won't inform them of the severity and they won't know the fact you are a girl. You need to pretend that you've forgotten everything since the day they met; otherwise, they will uncover the truth and all three of us will be in severe trouble. When you get in, act like you usually would, but stay away from trouble, don't get caught, and don't forget: I'll be making checks on your progress. You, their manager, and I will be in contact frequently. Now, go say farewell to your brother and go home," he paused, not yet releasing her, "One more thing, if you decide to be courageous and get into trouble, I will make you pay personally, understand?" he whispered grabbing her jaw and squeezing it tightly. The look in his eye made her skin crawl.
Where did Jae-Woo find this guy? she wondered before she nodded, signaling she understood his meanings. She got the message as clear as spring water. Obey, or the consequences would be vile and insufferable.
"Good," he released her jaw and shoulder. She slid from beneath his arm and hurried to the door. "Say nothing about this to your brother," he added. She nodded to him once more then disappeared out the door.
Hae Mina gazed in awe at the tall and long campus. The stones looked ancient, but the building was new. Everything was clean: the gardens, the sidewalks, the benches and even the walls. Everything. Where she now stood, two large willow trees, one to her left and one to her right, towered above her and created a magnificent shade that hid her from those she observed. So, this was Daedoji University. It stretched further up than she imagined and according to the map in her hand the University conquered seven blocks to the north and seven blocks to the west, not counting the park across the street that was also owned by the Naiting family. She continued to gaze at the beauty around her, a brief moment of distraction, but as a young man dressed in the school's uniform passed and gave her a confused look, she released a puff of air. It was time. Before she took a step further she rushed through the questions that were bound t
Hae Jae-Woo watched Chang Minsu walk off. 'Nice guy. It's too bad he's afraid of social standards.' Hae Jae-Woo stood up, tray in hand, and crossed the room to the garbage can. He dumped his remaining food and placed the tray on the counter. Once he turned, an array of voices began to chant, "Fight! Fight! Fight!" and a wave of people darted toward the bathroom. Hae Mina wanted to go see, and since both she and her brother loved to watch a good fight, she hurried to the center of the fast-growing ring of people. Hae Jae-Woo squeezed, ducked, shoved and dodged the massive number of boys to get near the center of the semi-circle, but once there, he found another semi-circle created by the members of Nightide, who were blocking most of the view of the fight. Hae Jae-Woo squeezed through a few more people and came out on the side where the smallest member, the nerd, stood, blocking people.&n
Hae Jae-Woo lay the bottle down and crossed his arms. Cass jerked up in shock and gasped in anger. He shook his head like a wet dog drying off. "Why you little," Cass began to threaten. Hae Jae-Woo stood his ground. "If you don't want to end up unconscious like Jiho, I suggest you sit back down." "Cass, you should have known better; just because he lost his memory, does not mean he lost his personality. Sit down," Rhee Min-Jun stated with a sigh. Hae Mina almost said something about Hae Jae-Woo acting like her, but knew to keep her mouth shut, so she continued to stand firm. However, the fact that Hae Jae-Woo had ever acted in the way she had, just now, upset her. He had better control of his temper than she did, and he knew doing such a stupid thing could get him in trouble. At least she had the excuse of a memory loss, what had he had? They must really like
Hae Mina jerked awake and although the nightmare faded, the fear remained. It was a fear that crept slowly until it devoured her heart. It sunk deeply into her skin and made her want to scrub it away, so she ventured down the steps and entered the bathroom. A shower was what she needed, so a shower she took. Meanwhile, out in the University's soccer field, Jeremy and the others finished their game. "Well, I'm exhausted," Jeremy said, before dropping to the grass. He slid a piece of gum from his pocket and began to chew it. "We should shower," Duskin suggested, "then we can practice our music for a little while." "A shower sounds great, and practice sounds good, too, especially since Hae Jae-Woo doesn't remember anything," Jeremy pointed out. "A shower does sou—" a repeating beep interrupted Cass. He fished out his touch phone
Jeremy grabbed his bags then continued inside the room. He shut the door with his foot. When he lifted his eyes, Hae Jae-Woo stood before him in nothing but a knee length white towel. But to Jeremy's shock, Hae Jae-Woo was obviously not a boy. Her long wet russet hair hung down the front of her body. He jumped back at Hae Jae-Woo's short girlish scream, tripped over his bag, which burst and sent his clothes sprawling about the floor, and landed on the ground trying to hide his eyes. Since when was Hae Jae-Woo a girl? He heard the bathroom door slam shut. He stood slowly and gaped at the dark brown door. If this Hae Jae-Woo is a girl, what happened to the real Jae-Woo? And who is this this? Jeremy stood and began to debate on whether he should leave and tell the others or if he should stay. As he stood there, he heard a sob. He stepped to the door but paused when her breathing caught. He couldn't tell the others. If sh
Cass led Jeremy and Hae Jae-Woo to the parking lot while complaining about his sister Chin-Sun. "I really wish she would stop calling me to babysit Hae-Won. I mean the kid is cute, but it's getting irritating." He paused by an extremely expensive looking red vehicle and Yang Dae-Su's voice called out. "Hey, who is driving Jae-Woo to the restaurant?" Cass paused, "Ah, that's right, you totaled yours, Jae-Woo." He shook his head. "I'll drive him," Jeremy offered. Hae Mina was not sure why, but the fact that Jeremy owned a car was a bit of a surprise. Most of the rich families she knew of had chauffeurs. Cass liked to be flashy so for him to own one made sense, but Jeremy seemed to be gentle and causal. "Fine by me," Cass shrugged. "You want a ride?" he asked Yang Dae-Su. "No, thanks. I'll drive mine. Your driving i
Later that evening Hae Jae-Woo changed upstairs relieved that the day was over. His loose clothes floated about him as he dropped onto the bed and stared at the white ceiling. Moments later, Jeremy appeared at the top of the steps. He paused and frowned as his eyes scanned over Hae Jae-Woo. "I wouldn't wear that if I was you," Jeremy whispered pointed to Hae Jae-Woo's white shirt. "Why not?" Hae Jae-Woo sat up and gave a puzzled look. "It's white," Jeremy muttered, but the statement didn't seem to phase Hae Jae-Woo, so Jeremy continued. "Cass and Jiho want revenge on you and knowing them, you'll end up drenched by morning. That top is white and somewhat thin. If it gets wet..." a blush touched his cheeks. Hae Jae-Woo crossed his arms over his torso. "I'll change," he whispered. Jeremy stood up and sat on the top step. "I'll stay here and ma
Hae Mina bit her lip. She wanted to march back into that room and slam her fist into his jaw. No one speaks to me like that! She mocked as she made her way through the maze-like halls. Ooh, if my brother's hospital bill didn't rely on you, I'd knock you out again, you conceited jerk! Hae Mina unlocked her room, tossed the door open and stormed inside. She kicked Kyung Jiho's bed then grabbed her foot in pain. "You okay, Jae-Woo?" Jeremy asked as he entered the room and shut the door with a soft click. "Yeah," she took in a sharp breath through her teeth. "I'm fine," She cleared her throat then sat on the edge of Kyung Jiho's bed, holding her foot. "Is it wrong for me to want to choke him out?" she asked as she examined her foot. "Yes," Jeremy chuckled. "It's understandable, but still wrong," he smiled. She closed her eyes and dropped back o
Hae Mina lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling. The scene with Cass replaying in her head. She had never been kissed before, not even a peck on the lips. Cass’s lips had been warm even if she’d only felt them for a few brief seconds. Her excitement had been shattered only seconds later.Hae Mina rolled onto her side and stared at the bathroom door. Why did I expect anything from it? I knew why I was there, but if only he’d kiss me because he wanted to. No, I can’t want that. She argued with herself.I’m just like every other girl. She admitted and rolled on her back again.I fell for his charms.
“Ready?” Cass asked.“For the party? Yes. To meet your appa again? No.” The last time had been rough and she doubted she could remember everything they told him.“You’ll be fine. Appa liked you last time, so his opinion shouldn’t change as long as you stay you,” Cass assured. Hae Mina freed the rush of air.“Okay, I can do this.”“How’s your hand?” Cass questioned, but the anger that had been present earlier was now absent. Now, he sounded concerned.Hae Mina closed her fingers into a fist. A small pain hit her palm, but it didn’t hurt as much as when she had dropped the glass. “It’ll be fine, at least
Cass pulled into Hwan Chin-Sun’s drive, and Hae Mina was already opening the door before he had parked. They were late and she knew Hwan Chin-Sun was going to be furious. On top of that, Hae Mina did not want to stay too close to Cass when he was seething over her hand. She rushed up the steps and knocked on the door. Cass was soon after her. The door slid open and Hwan Chin-Sun gave a puzzled look to Hae Mina.“Hello, Jae-Woo,” she greeted.“Uh, Noona, that’s Hae Mina,” Cass informed.“Heavens, why are you dressed like Jae-Woo?” she questioned as she backed out of the way.“Long story, but to sum it up: We were in town and Hae Mina didn
“You look tired,” Cass stated after the waitress had left.“I am,” Hae Mina replied and let her eyes close. “Stupid nightmares,” she muttered.“Nightmares?” Cass questioned. Hae Mina gave an inward groan.“Yeah. Haven’t you ever had nightmares before?” Hae Mina questioned. She hoped he would not ask what they were about.“I lived with Chin-Sun Noona most of my life, so I assure you, I’m familiar with nightmares especially living ones. Was it bad?”“Was what bad?”“The dream. Was it really bad? Chin-Sun Noona used to get horrible nightmares, a
Rhee Min-Jun heard a knock and figured it must have been Hae Mina and Cass back from Hwan Chin-Sun's. He made his way downstairs then opened the door. Hae Mina gave him a soft smile. “Hey,” she whispered. She wore her boy clothes and her wig.“It’s late. Come in,” he stated and backed out of the way. Cass was nowhere to be seen. She entered the room, and he shut the door. "You should try to remember your card next time," Rhee Min-Jun muttered.“I know. I'm sorry, Sunbae. I’m so tired,” she dropped back on the bed. He fought the smile.“That’s because it’s nearly midnight and you have been up since seven. Go on and take your shower.”“I don’t want to. I&rsq
Cass thought about her comment. What was she hiding? “How’s your hand?” he asked.Hae Mina paused in her eating, “My hand?” she questioned.“Yeah, you cut your right hand, remember?”“I kind of forgot everyone knew, but it’s doing fine, so you don’t need to worry,” Hae Mina replied.“Can I check?” he asked. She sighed.“You boys are all alike,” she stated before laying her hand on the table. He lifted it and checked the side. The cut was healing well. Cass didn’t drop her hand after he had looked at the wound, instead, he examined the rest of her hand. It was so small compared to his and felt delicate, but h
Hae Mina shook her head. Cass was something else when he was being a Casanova. Something that made Hae Mina want to slap him. She thought about the little favor she was about to do for him and about what she was supposed to be. Well, she had the right to do it. Besides, she was dying to see the look on his face when she acted like she was his in such a public location. She approached the two and tapped Cass’s shoulder. He turned. “Cass, oh, who is this?” she questioned looking at the girl. The girl looked Hae Mina over with a puzzled expression.“She’s was just helping me select some food,” Cass stated.“Why didn’t you ask me? I am your girlfriend, after all, I don’t mind helping you. He’s so silly sometimes. Always having others do for us
Cass, how did I ever let you talk me into this?Hae Mina wondered as Chin-Sun tossed another dress at her. “Try it on. I don’t like the way that one fits you.”“Chin-Sun Unni,” Hae Mina complained, “this is the seventh one.”“Eighth. Now, go change. I will not send you looking like a ragdoll.” Hwan Chin-Sun turned Hae Mina around and pushed her by her back into the dressing room. Hae Mina sighed and changed again. The second Hae Mina slid the fabric on, she knew the dress was an absolute no. Hwan Chin-Sun did not know about the wound healing on her back, so she would not have realized that Hae Mina could not wear that dress; however, even if her back was completely healed, she refused to wear this dress.
A few minutes later, Hae Mina found herself sitting in the Maid’s Diner with Nightide. Kyung Jiho and Hae Mina had yet to say a word to each other or to any of the other members.“Jae-Woo, we’re here for a reason,” Rhee Min-Jun whispered. Hae Mina groaned.“I don’t want to say sorry,” she whispered back. A waitress stopped next to them and took their orders.“Kimchi with water to drink,” Duskin stated.“Cucumber Kimchi and water,” Dae-Su ordered.“I’ll take Samgyetang and Misutgaru,” Cass stated.“Chap Chae and Misutgaru,” Kyung Jiho replied.
