Hae Jae-Woo watched Chang Minsu walk off. 'Nice guy. It's too bad he's afraid of social standards.' Hae Jae-Woo stood up, tray in hand, and crossed the room to the garbage can. He dumped his remaining food and placed the tray on the counter.
Once he turned, an array of voices began to chant, "Fight! Fight! Fight!" and a wave of people darted toward the bathroom. Hae Mina wanted to go see, and since both she and her brother loved to watch a good fight, she hurried to the center of the fast-growing ring of people.
Hae Jae-Woo squeezed, ducked, shoved and dodged the massive number of boys to get near the center of the semi-circle, but once there, he found another semi-circle created by the members of Nightide, who were blocking most of the view of the fight. Hae Jae-Woo squeezed through a few more people and came out on the side where the smallest member, the nerd, stood, blocking people.
Hae Jae-Woo, being an inch shorter, tiptoed to see what was going on then decided to slide to the left and look past the nerd's shoulder. What he saw enraged him, for Chang Minsu was thrown by his shirt against the wall. The first boy he'd seen, the biker one, lifted Chang Minsu and plowed him to the wall and held him there while muttering something incoherent.
Hae Jae-Woo pushed the smaller boy to the side with a fluid and un-harmful motion and hurried into the fight. He jerked against the biker boy's arm who lost his grip and dropped Chang Minsu. He glared at Hae Jae-Woo and the room silenced.
"What do you think you are doing?" Biker Boy demanded.
"Me? I'm not the one beating up a student who isn't even fighting back," Hae Jae-Woo spat. Biker Boy pushed Hae Jae-Woo's shoulder so that he stumbled back; then Biker Boy returned his attention to Chang Minsu.
By now Hae Mina was sick of the nonsense, but she feared her actions would not help her brother any. However, her attitude shifted when Biker Boy reached back to punch Chang Minsu. Hae Jae-Woo grabbed his arm and jerked him around. Before anything more could be said, Hae Jae-Woo released a punch with such a force and accuracy that it toppled Biker Boy over unconscious—which was Hae Jae-Woo's intent to begin with.
Everyone stood dumbstruck, except for Nightide, who were stepping closer. Hae Jae-Woo brought up his fist, "By all means, if you want to be on the floor unconscious, step closer!" The group stilled. "Chang Minsu, you okay?" he added.
Chang Minsu forced his body off the ground and stood behind Hae Jae-Woo, "I'm fine, but where did you learn to knock someone out like that?"
"That doesn't matter." Truth was neither Hae Mina nor Hae Jae-Woo ever liked to mention where they'd learn to fight because they had learned by defending themselves since they were young. He always fought for her, but he never would have interfered with something like this, instead he would have watched and chanted with the other boys. But Hae Mina could not stand for injustice, especially those caused due to social class.
"You weren't kidding when you said you didn't care what they thought," Chang Minsu muttered.
"Jae-Woo," the alluring one began with a frown; "this is a direct violation of your contract. Duskin lead him to the room. We will discuss this incident among ourselves."
The small one Hae Jae-Woo had pushed out of the way stepped forward and began to move onward without checking to see if Hae Jae-Woo followed. The crowd split and departed. Hae Jae-Woo, knowing this was going to end like the worst part of a nightmare, clenched his teeth together and followed like a punished dog. But it was not the fear of these boys that had Hae Jae-Woo worried. Compared to Mr. Kyong what they were capable of doing was child's play.
As Hae Jae-Woo began to follow, the other members of Nightide lifted the first boy and followed along, however, Hae Mina felt as if they were guarding Hae Jae-Woo from fleeing, which by this point was a high possibility, but Mina had a responsibility and a promise to keep. She had to remain Hae Jae-Woo and fix this.
So, she clenched her fist and marched after the nerdy one. The boy ahead of her glided down the cool halls making no sound as his shoes touched the hard floor. His steps were like that of a ghost, soundless and he radiated a mature air that did not fit his childish and nerdish appearance. Which one is he?
Why hadn't she paid attention to her brother when he spoke of Nightide? The only other thing she could remember besides the band name was their names, but she could not remember whose name belonged to whom.
The nerd paused in front of a thick brown door with a gold covered knob and inserted a key. With a small click and a shove, the door opened. "Come in, Jae-Woo. We have much to discuss," his collected voice ordered. Until now, Hae Jae-Woo had not realized how silent the hall had been. The young man entered; Hae Jae-Woo followed and found himself in a recording studio mixed with a lounge. The others filed in.
The young man with the black suit on and the guy in complete white lifted Biker Boy into a chair and dropped him. "Dude, loose some pounds," the alluring one huffed.
"Cass, you might just need to exercise more, instead of hanging out with your girls," the boy who'd flexed teased.
"Why would I, Dae-Su? They run after me one way or another," Cass replied grinning from ear to ear. "If I exercise anymore, they'll never leave me be." Hae Mina wanted to slap him for his arrogance, but since her brother would not do something like that, she kept her hands in fists.
"So, we ready?" drummer boy questioned as he shut the door. With his words, everyone faced Hae Jae-Woo. Nerd stood closer than necessary, but Hae Jae-Woo figured he was trying to figure something out.
"Well, what do you have to say?"
"If you want me to apologize, you can forget it. That jerk deserved it and I'll do it to anyone else who tries to make me apologize," Hae Jae-Woo promised locking his eyes with the Nerds. They stood with a few inches separating them.
"Something's wrong with you," Nerd said. The others stood looking shocked.
"Like what?" Hae Jae-Woo demanded, pretending to be furious at the accusation. In truth Hae Mina feared he had discovered the secret.
"You're shorter. You used to be about an inch taller than me."
"Excuse me," Hae Mina retorted in a way she knew her brother would have spoken. He hated to fist fight when he could argue—he found more fun out of annoying people; "Not like I could help I got in a car accident and had surgery."
Nerd backed off, "I heard about the accident but not the surgery."
"Konu decided to keep that a secret," Jae-Woo continued to respond curtly and chose to be as informal as possible.
"I apologize," Nerd muttered; "So, I guess you have amnesia, too, since you have obviously no idea who you just knocked out."
"As much as I hate to admit it, yes." Hae Jae-Woo began in a softer tone, "I lost most of my recent memories. I can't recall anything from the past couple of months."
"What do you remember?" a new voice asked. It belonged to the young man in white.
"My name, my age, basics, how to play my instruments, how to sing, how to play basketball, simple things I've done for years, and obviously I haven't forgotten how to fight."
"So, you don't remember me?" the blond drummer question with a pout. He's so cute. Hae Mina complained. It isn't fair. Hae Jae-Woo shook his head. "Oh, no fair. Don't you remember anyone?"
Hae Jae-Woo shook his head again. "Well, let us begin the introductions," Nerd said.
"That is Yang Dae-Su." he pointed to the young man who'd flexed; "That is Taeyang Cass, he refuses to go by his real name, so we are forced to call him Cass," he pointed to the boy in the black suit and full of arrogance. "That is Antonio Lucas Jeremiah Lebel. His Korean name is Lebel Jun-Seo but he insists we call him Jeremy." The nerd pointed to the blond drummer who gave a bright smile.
"That is Rhee Min-Jun," the boy in complete white gave a soft nod. "The one presently knocked out would be Kyung Jiho, and I am Duskin Nighting."
Jeremy laughed, "His real name is Naiting Tae-Yang, but he grew up in America for a good portion of his life and doesn't like going by the full Korean name."
Duskin's face gained a tinge of red, "It has more to do with the fact that Cass's family name is similar to my given name."
"Sure, sure," Yang Dae-Su laughed.
"Just call me Duskin, please."
"Whatever. So, who's the oldest?" Hae Jae-Woo asked.
"Cass, Jiho, Dae-Su and Min-Jun are twenty. Jeremy and I are nineteen. Jiho is older than Min-Jun. Min-Jun is older than Dae-Su. Dae-Su is older than Cass, but only by a few days and Jeremy is older than me by a month and two days."
"Wait, did you say I knocked out Kyung Jiho?" The sudden realization made her stomach clench.
"Yes," Duskin confirmed. Hae Jae-Woo groaned. Fantastic. I would knock out the one person I needed to please.
"So, you've forgotten everything?" Cass inquired as he plopped down on the couch and propped his feet up on the table. Hae Jae-Woo fought to still his tongue, but the words spilled through his lips.
"Get your feet off the table. Do you know how disrespectful that is?"
Cass laughed, "Well, that hasn't changed any. Too bad, I miss putting my feet on the table. Anyways, let's get down to business. You broke the contract, so you have to pay."
The others sat back. Jeremy sat on a stool facing the station. Rhee Min-Jun leaned against the wall, Duskin sat in the chair facing Cass. Hae Jae-Woo remained standing by the table.
"How so?"
"You have to wake up Jiho and apologize."
"No!" Hae Jae-Woo replied and crossed his arms. Doing something like that would just make Kyung Jiho even more angry.
Cass leaned forward and smiled cruelly, "Yes, you will, because you signed a contract stating if you disobeyed the rules you would gratefully accept punishment."
"I don't remember that," Jae-Woo retorted.
"True, but you didn't remember us either, so you will listen and take this water bottle and soak Jiho." Cass tossed the bottle.
The wet clear bottle landed in Jae-Woo's hands. "No, I won't. We can wait; but if you're so impatient, you do it." He tossed the bottle back.
"Jae-Woo, use it!" Cass demanded standing and pushing the bottle into his hands. Everyone in the room glued their eyes to the scene.
"No! Cass, I refuse," Hae Jae-Woo shoved the bottle toward Cass.
"Do you want expelled from the band?" Cass growled.
Hae Jae-Woo clenched his teeth. "Fine," he spat. "I'll use it." Cass sat back down with a triumphant grin. Hae Jae-Woo removed the lid and dropped it on the table; then he faced Kyung Jiho but paused before throwing it. Hae Mina's mind churned. If she was going to do it, she might as well make sure it was worth it, so again Hae Jae-Woo faced Cass. "Are you sure this is cold enough to wake him?"
"Of course," Cass replied, "You have woken him up many times this way. Of course, I never had to fight you to do it." Hae Jae-Woo noticed Jeremy chewing his gum quicker. No one suspected what Hae Jae-Woo did next.
"Well, let's see!" He exclaimed and tossed the water onto Cass.
Hae Jae-Woo lay the bottle down and crossed his arms. Cass jerked up in shock and gasped in anger. He shook his head like a wet dog drying off. "Why you little," Cass began to threaten. Hae Jae-Woo stood his ground. "If you don't want to end up unconscious like Jiho, I suggest you sit back down." "Cass, you should have known better; just because he lost his memory, does not mean he lost his personality. Sit down," Rhee Min-Jun stated with a sigh. Hae Mina almost said something about Hae Jae-Woo acting like her, but knew to keep her mouth shut, so she continued to stand firm. However, the fact that Hae Jae-Woo had ever acted in the way she had, just now, upset her. He had better control of his temper than she did, and he knew doing such a stupid thing could get him in trouble. At least she had the excuse of a memory loss, what had he had? They must really like
Hae Mina jerked awake and although the nightmare faded, the fear remained. It was a fear that crept slowly until it devoured her heart. It sunk deeply into her skin and made her want to scrub it away, so she ventured down the steps and entered the bathroom. A shower was what she needed, so a shower she took. Meanwhile, out in the University's soccer field, Jeremy and the others finished their game. "Well, I'm exhausted," Jeremy said, before dropping to the grass. He slid a piece of gum from his pocket and began to chew it. "We should shower," Duskin suggested, "then we can practice our music for a little while." "A shower sounds great, and practice sounds good, too, especially since Hae Jae-Woo doesn't remember anything," Jeremy pointed out. "A shower does sou—" a repeating beep interrupted Cass. He fished out his touch phone
Jeremy grabbed his bags then continued inside the room. He shut the door with his foot. When he lifted his eyes, Hae Jae-Woo stood before him in nothing but a knee length white towel. But to Jeremy's shock, Hae Jae-Woo was obviously not a boy. Her long wet russet hair hung down the front of her body. He jumped back at Hae Jae-Woo's short girlish scream, tripped over his bag, which burst and sent his clothes sprawling about the floor, and landed on the ground trying to hide his eyes. Since when was Hae Jae-Woo a girl? He heard the bathroom door slam shut. He stood slowly and gaped at the dark brown door. If this Hae Jae-Woo is a girl, what happened to the real Jae-Woo? And who is this this? Jeremy stood and began to debate on whether he should leave and tell the others or if he should stay. As he stood there, he heard a sob. He stepped to the door but paused when her breathing caught. He couldn't tell the others. If sh
Cass led Jeremy and Hae Jae-Woo to the parking lot while complaining about his sister Chin-Sun. "I really wish she would stop calling me to babysit Hae-Won. I mean the kid is cute, but it's getting irritating." He paused by an extremely expensive looking red vehicle and Yang Dae-Su's voice called out. "Hey, who is driving Jae-Woo to the restaurant?" Cass paused, "Ah, that's right, you totaled yours, Jae-Woo." He shook his head. "I'll drive him," Jeremy offered. Hae Mina was not sure why, but the fact that Jeremy owned a car was a bit of a surprise. Most of the rich families she knew of had chauffeurs. Cass liked to be flashy so for him to own one made sense, but Jeremy seemed to be gentle and causal. "Fine by me," Cass shrugged. "You want a ride?" he asked Yang Dae-Su. "No, thanks. I'll drive mine. Your driving i
Later that evening Hae Jae-Woo changed upstairs relieved that the day was over. His loose clothes floated about him as he dropped onto the bed and stared at the white ceiling. Moments later, Jeremy appeared at the top of the steps. He paused and frowned as his eyes scanned over Hae Jae-Woo. "I wouldn't wear that if I was you," Jeremy whispered pointed to Hae Jae-Woo's white shirt. "Why not?" Hae Jae-Woo sat up and gave a puzzled look. "It's white," Jeremy muttered, but the statement didn't seem to phase Hae Jae-Woo, so Jeremy continued. "Cass and Jiho want revenge on you and knowing them, you'll end up drenched by morning. That top is white and somewhat thin. If it gets wet..." a blush touched his cheeks. Hae Jae-Woo crossed his arms over his torso. "I'll change," he whispered. Jeremy stood up and sat on the top step. "I'll stay here and ma
Hae Mina bit her lip. She wanted to march back into that room and slam her fist into his jaw. No one speaks to me like that! She mocked as she made her way through the maze-like halls. Ooh, if my brother's hospital bill didn't rely on you, I'd knock you out again, you conceited jerk! Hae Mina unlocked her room, tossed the door open and stormed inside. She kicked Kyung Jiho's bed then grabbed her foot in pain. "You okay, Jae-Woo?" Jeremy asked as he entered the room and shut the door with a soft click. "Yeah," she took in a sharp breath through her teeth. "I'm fine," She cleared her throat then sat on the edge of Kyung Jiho's bed, holding her foot. "Is it wrong for me to want to choke him out?" she asked as she examined her foot. "Yes," Jeremy chuckled. "It's understandable, but still wrong," he smiled. She closed her eyes and dropped back o
Hae Mina looked forward with narrow eyes. How was she supposed to get away without him noticing who she was? She continued to walk toward the diner. Cass's car pulled beside her. "Hey, babe, can I ask you a question?" Cass's smooth voice called. Hae Mina stood straighter and continued to walk. Cass's car stopped, but she continued. A few silent minutes passed before she felt someone's hand on her shoulder. She spun around and stomped on the person's foot. She grinned when she saw Cass's shocked face. She then turned and hurried past the building. Cass didn't follow her. She sighed in relief when she rounded the corner and slid down the side of the wall. The rough surface caused a gasp of pain to slip from her lips, but relief flooded her. Cass hadn't followed her, nor had he taken the time to recognized her. "Hey, hon, why'd you do something like that? I only want
Hae-Won re-entered the room. "Does it hurt?" she asked looking at Hae Mina's bandaged back. "I'll be okay. Do you want to help me find a good dress to wear?" "Okay." The girl smiled and hurried to the pile of dresses. She began to throw them about before she found a green dress and pulled it from the pile then handed it to Hae Mina. "I like this one. Try it." Hae-Won darted from the room. Hae Mina closed her eyes in relief. The girl moved like a buzzing bee. While she changed, she could hear Hae-Won talking to Cass. "Unni's nice, Uncle Cass, and she pretty," Hae-Won laughed. "Just watch the movie, Hae-Won," he chuckled. "Are you going to keep her?" She asked honestly. "Hae-Won," he began to scold. "Okay, okay, no need to get sewious," she
Hae Mina lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling. The scene with Cass replaying in her head. She had never been kissed before, not even a peck on the lips. Cass’s lips had been warm even if she’d only felt them for a few brief seconds. Her excitement had been shattered only seconds later.Hae Mina rolled onto her side and stared at the bathroom door. Why did I expect anything from it? I knew why I was there, but if only he’d kiss me because he wanted to. No, I can’t want that. She argued with herself.I’m just like every other girl. She admitted and rolled on her back again.I fell for his charms.
“Ready?” Cass asked.“For the party? Yes. To meet your appa again? No.” The last time had been rough and she doubted she could remember everything they told him.“You’ll be fine. Appa liked you last time, so his opinion shouldn’t change as long as you stay you,” Cass assured. Hae Mina freed the rush of air.“Okay, I can do this.”“How’s your hand?” Cass questioned, but the anger that had been present earlier was now absent. Now, he sounded concerned.Hae Mina closed her fingers into a fist. A small pain hit her palm, but it didn’t hurt as much as when she had dropped the glass. “It’ll be fine, at least
Cass pulled into Hwan Chin-Sun’s drive, and Hae Mina was already opening the door before he had parked. They were late and she knew Hwan Chin-Sun was going to be furious. On top of that, Hae Mina did not want to stay too close to Cass when he was seething over her hand. She rushed up the steps and knocked on the door. Cass was soon after her. The door slid open and Hwan Chin-Sun gave a puzzled look to Hae Mina.“Hello, Jae-Woo,” she greeted.“Uh, Noona, that’s Hae Mina,” Cass informed.“Heavens, why are you dressed like Jae-Woo?” she questioned as she backed out of the way.“Long story, but to sum it up: We were in town and Hae Mina didn
“You look tired,” Cass stated after the waitress had left.“I am,” Hae Mina replied and let her eyes close. “Stupid nightmares,” she muttered.“Nightmares?” Cass questioned. Hae Mina gave an inward groan.“Yeah. Haven’t you ever had nightmares before?” Hae Mina questioned. She hoped he would not ask what they were about.“I lived with Chin-Sun Noona most of my life, so I assure you, I’m familiar with nightmares especially living ones. Was it bad?”“Was what bad?”“The dream. Was it really bad? Chin-Sun Noona used to get horrible nightmares, a
Rhee Min-Jun heard a knock and figured it must have been Hae Mina and Cass back from Hwan Chin-Sun's. He made his way downstairs then opened the door. Hae Mina gave him a soft smile. “Hey,” she whispered. She wore her boy clothes and her wig.“It’s late. Come in,” he stated and backed out of the way. Cass was nowhere to be seen. She entered the room, and he shut the door. "You should try to remember your card next time," Rhee Min-Jun muttered.“I know. I'm sorry, Sunbae. I’m so tired,” she dropped back on the bed. He fought the smile.“That’s because it’s nearly midnight and you have been up since seven. Go on and take your shower.”“I don’t want to. I&rsq
Cass thought about her comment. What was she hiding? “How’s your hand?” he asked.Hae Mina paused in her eating, “My hand?” she questioned.“Yeah, you cut your right hand, remember?”“I kind of forgot everyone knew, but it’s doing fine, so you don’t need to worry,” Hae Mina replied.“Can I check?” he asked. She sighed.“You boys are all alike,” she stated before laying her hand on the table. He lifted it and checked the side. The cut was healing well. Cass didn’t drop her hand after he had looked at the wound, instead, he examined the rest of her hand. It was so small compared to his and felt delicate, but h
Hae Mina shook her head. Cass was something else when he was being a Casanova. Something that made Hae Mina want to slap him. She thought about the little favor she was about to do for him and about what she was supposed to be. Well, she had the right to do it. Besides, she was dying to see the look on his face when she acted like she was his in such a public location. She approached the two and tapped Cass’s shoulder. He turned. “Cass, oh, who is this?” she questioned looking at the girl. The girl looked Hae Mina over with a puzzled expression.“She’s was just helping me select some food,” Cass stated.“Why didn’t you ask me? I am your girlfriend, after all, I don’t mind helping you. He’s so silly sometimes. Always having others do for us
Cass, how did I ever let you talk me into this?Hae Mina wondered as Chin-Sun tossed another dress at her. “Try it on. I don’t like the way that one fits you.”“Chin-Sun Unni,” Hae Mina complained, “this is the seventh one.”“Eighth. Now, go change. I will not send you looking like a ragdoll.” Hwan Chin-Sun turned Hae Mina around and pushed her by her back into the dressing room. Hae Mina sighed and changed again. The second Hae Mina slid the fabric on, she knew the dress was an absolute no. Hwan Chin-Sun did not know about the wound healing on her back, so she would not have realized that Hae Mina could not wear that dress; however, even if her back was completely healed, she refused to wear this dress.
A few minutes later, Hae Mina found herself sitting in the Maid’s Diner with Nightide. Kyung Jiho and Hae Mina had yet to say a word to each other or to any of the other members.“Jae-Woo, we’re here for a reason,” Rhee Min-Jun whispered. Hae Mina groaned.“I don’t want to say sorry,” she whispered back. A waitress stopped next to them and took their orders.“Kimchi with water to drink,” Duskin stated.“Cucumber Kimchi and water,” Dae-Su ordered.“I’ll take Samgyetang and Misutgaru,” Cass stated.“Chap Chae and Misutgaru,” Kyung Jiho replied.
