Later that evening Hae Jae-Woo changed upstairs relieved that the day was over. His loose clothes floated about him as he dropped onto the bed and stared at the white ceiling. Moments later, Jeremy appeared at the top of the steps. He paused and frowned as his eyes scanned over Hae Jae-Woo.
"I wouldn't wear that if I was you," Jeremy whispered pointed to Hae Jae-Woo's white shirt. "Why not?" Hae Jae-Woo sat up and gave a puzzled look. "It's white," Jeremy muttered, but the statement didn't seem to phase Hae Jae-Woo, so Jeremy continued. "Cass and Jiho want revenge on you and knowing them, you'll end up drenched by morning. That top is white and somewhat thin. If it gets wet..." a blush touched his cheeks. Hae Jae-Woo crossed his arms over his torso. "I'll change," he whispered. Jeremy stood up and sat on the top step. "I'll stay here and make sure no one comes up," he whispered before looking away and staring at the wall. "Thanks, Jeremy," Hae Jae-Woo replied. Jeremy waited as he heard drawers open and shut. He looked down at his hands. He never thought he'd be protecting a girl from being discovered. It had his nerves jumping inside him. Was it always going to be this way? Was he going to have to guard her every time she changed? His cheeks inflamed. He shook his head, unnoticed by Hae Jae-Woo. "I'm finished, Jeremy," Hae Jae-Woo muttered. When Jeremy stood and turned around, Hae Jae-Woo sat on the bed in a black shirt and gray pants. "That'll work." Jeremy gave a comforting smile before going to his bed and collapsing.Hae Mina forced her body to relax bit by bit. The day had been long and exhausting. Her energy waxed thin, yet her mind raced with the events. Meeting Chang Minsu, knocking out Kyung Jiho, dousing Cass, befriending Jeremy, and then the visit at the Maid's Diner. All of it raced in her mind in a jumble of incoherence. Her thoughts soon evened out and centered on her worry for Hae Jae-Woo. How was he? Was he sleeping well in the hospital? Was he doing what the nurses told him to? Was his head still aching? Was he still throwing up? Hae Mina soon drowned in her questions and sunk into oblivion as sleep pulled her under. Below, Cass and Jiho stared at the ceiling, neither finding sleep and both plotting. The bed to the right of Jiho held Duskin in its warm embrace. The bed to Jiho's left held Cass from sleep. "Jiho, are you awake?" Cass asked. "Yeah," Kyung Jiho muttered. Cass sat up in response to Kyung Jiho then leaned against the wall. "I can't handle it. I have to do something to get back at him. He soaked me with water." "So what? He knocked me out with a single hit, and I can't just tell him he's kicked out because Dae-Jung would kill me--as would every fan we have." "Yeah, I know. Dae-Jung is scarier than the millions of mobs that'd be after us; although, I wouldn't want to be at the end of either one's wrath," Cass laughed in a hushed voice. "So, what are we going to do?" Kyung Jiho asked changing the topic back to the original issue. Their eyes traveled across the room, seeing nothing as they plotted. Then Kyung Jiho sat up straight with a grin. "I have an idea." He then leaned over and whispered his plan to Cass, whose grin grew with every second that passed. "That's perfect. Let's get to work."Early, the next morning, Jeremy stretched out on his bed till his feet touched the base of the bed, and his finger collided with the headboard. A smile stretched across his face. He'd had the most wonderful, yet awkward dream. He stared at the ceiling then looked over at Jae-Woo's sleeping form. Odd he'd dream about her last night. He thought back to the dream and recalled that she had pulled her hair up and was wearing a long red sequin dress. They were at some type of function involving dancing. She had taken a turn with each member of Nightide. Then the end of the dream washed afresh. Why on Earth had he just watched as she kissed Jiho? Why didn't he stop her?
He shook his head and stood up. Well, dreams were just dreams, so he grabbed a change of clothes and hurried down the stairs. He pulled the bathroom door open and before he could take a step, a pail of iced water soaked him. He released a surprised yell and stumbled away from the door. Kyung Jiho and Cass jerked from their beds then grimaced. Jeremy stood shivering and drenched by the bathroom door. "Sorry, Jeremy," Cass muttered. Hae Jae-Woo leaped over the railing and his feet hit the floor. "What happened?" he asked looking at Jeremy's white soaked clothes. "I think this was meant for you," Jeremy replied, his teeth chattering.Hae Jae-Woo's gaze locked with Kyung Jiho's. Kyung Jiho stood still for a moment before he took a step back. Hae Jae-Woo inched closer but was interrupted by Duskin leaping from the bed. "We are so late!" He grabbed the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head, revealing his pale and lean chest. The other boys, realizing it was nearly nine, followed his example in a rush. Hae Jae-Woo turned and dashed up the staircase as fast as he could. Once at the top, Hae Mina covered her burning cheeks with her hands. She resisted the urge to squeak with embarrassment. Aside from Hae Jae-Woo, she had never seen a man shirtless, but in a matter of seconds, she had not only seen one young man shirtless but four. She shook off the feeling that heated her cheeks and ears and began to change into her uniform. She managed to get her pants and undershirt on before she looked over to see Jeremy arrive on the top step. She gasped and his eyes jerked up. His eyes widened before he took a step back, stumbled, then tumbled down the stairs. Hae Mina jerked on her shirt before she hurried down the steps. "You okay, Jeremy?" She asked, her voice a little higher than normal. The others looked at Jeremy with concern. "I'm fine. I just slipped," he laughed as he stood up. He straightened his pants then grinned at the others, "We should get to class."The others gave him a concerned look but made their way out of the room. Jeremy looked back and mouthed, "Sorry," before leaving. Hae Mina sighed. Even if Jeremy promised to be her protector, she was sure that avoiding similar occurrences would be difficult. She rested her hand on the door, ready to leave, but paused as her phone vibrated. "Hello?" She asked, masking her voice as Hae Jae-Woo. "Jae-Woo?" Kyong Konu's voice questioned. "Yeah?" Hae Jae-Woo asked. "How was your first day?" Kyong Konu's voice was soft and kind, but the sound made her blood boiled. This man did not have an ounce of kindness in his soul. "I'm in the band and I am doing what you asked. What else do you need to know?" Hae Mina asked. "Brat, remember what I said. If anything happens…" "I know!" Hae Mina snapped at him before she flipped her phone shut, then tossed it on one of the beds. After a short glare at the object, she turned and marched from the room. That man could destroy her life, it was true, but she was not the type of person submit to another's will. Hours later, Hae Jae-Woo stood in the recording studio attempting to learn the music the only way he knew how to, but Kyung Jiho disliked the method. "Why won't you hold the guitar correctly and actually play? Or have you forgotten that?" "I know how to play!" Hae Jae-Woo growled placing the guitar on the stand. "If you would just let me learn the song, I'll hold the guitar correctly. I need to hear it once all the way through before I play it. I've told you this three times already!" "We're not getting anywhere," Dusk muttered. He sat on a stool in the back of the room. Dusk it turned out was actually Duskin's stage name. "Dusk, I know. But you know I can't play with someone who is an underachiever," Kyung Jiho complained. "Underachiever? I'm not even playing yet. How can I be an underachiever?" Hae Jae-Woo demanded. "The fact you are not even attempting to play is what makes you an underachiever. If you actually cared, you would try to play." "Stop arguing, you two," Rhee Min-Jun instructed with a sigh. "Yeah, Jiho, give him a break. It's not his fault we only have two weeks till the concert," Jeremy input. Kyung Jiho fumed but backed off. "Whatever, let's try again." The young men began to play the song. Again, Hae Jae-Woo didn't come in when he was supposed to; however, Dusk played the part instead. Kyung Jiho, his eyes closed, didn't notice who was playing.Hae Jae-Woo looked back at Dusk and mouthed, "Thanks." Dusk only nodded as he jumped into his part. Hae Jae-Woo's part continued. He looked around and found Rhee Min-Jun had grabbed a guitar and began to play the part. Hae Jae-Woo had not realized until now that Rhee Min-Jun even knew how to play the guitar. So far, he had only used a violin. Rhee Min-Jun then switched to his violin as Yang Dae-Su joined in and played another guitar. Hae Jae-Woo continued to listen to the music and could hear exactly when his part shifted to Yang Dae-Su's part. Kyung Jiho stopped. "Finally! Okay, let's try that again. I heard some pauses that don't belong, but it sounded great. You could do better. You used to at least." "Fine," Hae Jae-Woo spat. Kyung Jiho started the music and Hae Jae-Woo lifted the guitar. He faced Dusk and shook his head. Dusk didn't play, but Hae Jae-Woo did. He turned around and watched every note on the page. The song continued and sped up. This time the pauses were less often, though a few existed. When the song slowed, Hae Jae-Woo continued just as he should. Dusk joined, followed by Rhee Min-Jun and then Yang Dae-Su. Meanwhile, Jeremy in the back continued to play his part on the drums, but a smile stretched across his face and it took all of his control to not laugh since he knew this Hae Jae-Woo had only heard this song today and yet she could still play it as well as the real Hae Jae-Woo. When the song ended Kyung Jiho spoke. "Thank you. Now that wasn't too hard, was it?" Before Hae Jae-Woo could reply, Dusk interrupted with, "Ready for the next song?" "Let's go." Kyung Jiho began the next song. After three measures, Hae Jae-Woo's part arrived, but once more he did not play. Kyung Jiho stopped and glared at Hae Jae-Woo. "You have to come in on time!" he began. "I wasn't playing, Jiho," Hae Jae-Woo growled. Dusk released a frustrated sigh, stood up, and marched from the room. Kyung Jiho didn't pay attention, but Hae Jae-Woo noticed Dusk laid on the couch and closed his eyes. "Why weren't you playing?" Kyung Jiho demanded. "We had this discussion not even six minutes ago. I do better if I hear the part first." "You didn't hear it a minute ago." "Actually, I did. They," Hae Jae-Woo pointed to the group, "played for me. So close your eyes," Jae-Woo pointed his finger at Jiho's face, "and let me hear my part; or shut your arrogant mouth and let me figure out my music sheet." "You little brat! I don't care if you lost your memory; no one speaks to me like that!" He raised his hand to strike Hae Jae-Woo who stood ready to take the strike, however, Rhee Min-Jun caught Kyung Jiho's wrist. With a cold glare, he stated, "Jiho, stop. Jae-Woo can knock you out in a second, and Dae-Jung will kill you if either one of you ends up in the hospital before the concert." Kyung Jiho and Hae Jae-Woo's eyes remained locked for several moments before Kyung Jiho finally jerked free and backed away. Hae Jae-Woo spun around and stormed from the room. "Great, Jiho. If he quits because of you…" Jeremy began but Hae Jae-Woo did not hear the rest of the conversation as he continued on his way.Hae Mina bit her lip. She wanted to march back into that room and slam her fist into his jaw. No one speaks to me like that! She mocked as she made her way through the maze-like halls. Ooh, if my brother's hospital bill didn't rely on you, I'd knock you out again, you conceited jerk! Hae Mina unlocked her room, tossed the door open and stormed inside. She kicked Kyung Jiho's bed then grabbed her foot in pain. "You okay, Jae-Woo?" Jeremy asked as he entered the room and shut the door with a soft click. "Yeah," she took in a sharp breath through her teeth. "I'm fine," She cleared her throat then sat on the edge of Kyung Jiho's bed, holding her foot. "Is it wrong for me to want to choke him out?" she asked as she examined her foot. "Yes," Jeremy chuckled. "It's understandable, but still wrong," he smiled. She closed her eyes and dropped back o
Hae Mina looked forward with narrow eyes. How was she supposed to get away without him noticing who she was? She continued to walk toward the diner. Cass's car pulled beside her. "Hey, babe, can I ask you a question?" Cass's smooth voice called. Hae Mina stood straighter and continued to walk. Cass's car stopped, but she continued. A few silent minutes passed before she felt someone's hand on her shoulder. She spun around and stomped on the person's foot. She grinned when she saw Cass's shocked face. She then turned and hurried past the building. Cass didn't follow her. She sighed in relief when she rounded the corner and slid down the side of the wall. The rough surface caused a gasp of pain to slip from her lips, but relief flooded her. Cass hadn't followed her, nor had he taken the time to recognized her. "Hey, hon, why'd you do something like that? I only want
Hae-Won re-entered the room. "Does it hurt?" she asked looking at Hae Mina's bandaged back. "I'll be okay. Do you want to help me find a good dress to wear?" "Okay." The girl smiled and hurried to the pile of dresses. She began to throw them about before she found a green dress and pulled it from the pile then handed it to Hae Mina. "I like this one. Try it." Hae-Won darted from the room. Hae Mina closed her eyes in relief. The girl moved like a buzzing bee. While she changed, she could hear Hae-Won talking to Cass. "Unni's nice, Uncle Cass, and she pretty," Hae-Won laughed. "Just watch the movie, Hae-Won," he chuckled. "Are you going to keep her?" She asked honestly. "Hae-Won," he began to scold. "Okay, okay, no need to get sewious," she
As Cass and Hae Mina approached the table, his parents rose to their feet. Hae Mina gave them a gentle bow and introduced herself, "Good evening, I'm Hae Mina. I'm pleased to meet you." "Hmm," Cass's father muttered then motioned at the table. "sit." The group took their seats. "Good evening, Hae Mina, I'm Taeyang Su-Ji and this is my husband Taeyang Hong-Jin. We are pleased to meet you." After a moment of awkward silence, the waitress came to take their orders. Hae Mina's stomach knotted up as she waited for the interrogation to begin. She had no idea how she and Cass were going to trick his parents but she hoped this went by fast. She leaned against the back of the chair and had to hide a flinch. Not a smart idea. Her side may have had medicine on it, but that did not prevent it from hurting. "Appa, you called us here when we had plans.
The next morning just as the sun was rising above the trees and buildings, Kyung Jiho came into the room like a bullet. "Guys, check this out! Cass, get up." Hae Jae-Woo came down the staircase to see what the commotion was about. "Jiho, what are you doing?" he grumbled. "Look," Kyung Jiho tossed the newspaper at Hae Jae-Woo who caught it with ease. Hae Jae-Woo looked at the front page and paled. Cass and Hae Mina sat in the ice cream shop laughing. Her face wasn't shown in the picture, but Cass's smiling face was clear. She was suddenly quite thankful she had sat with her back to the door. Cass stood beside her and looked down at the paper. The other three circled them. "Who is she, Cass?" Duskin questioned. "It says you guys were with each other all day. Even your parents met her. It also says that they suspect you've been secretly dati
That Sunday, Hae Jae-Woo stretched out on his bed with a smile on his face. He knew the others had gone home for the day. Some were visiting family and some were hiding from them. Hae Mina smiled. Since she was alone, she could be a girl today, but then again there were lots of boys left in the school, so she had a high chance of being caught. After a short debate, she decided she would just continue being Hae Jae-Woo. After dressing in loose, but not baggy, jeans, and a black T-shirt, Hae Jae-Woo left the confining room. He walked down the hall studying the music sheet in his hand and softly whispering the lyrics. As he walked toward the elevator, he collided with another body. Hae Jae-Woo stumbled backward and landed on his butt with a surprised gasp flying from his lips. He looked up at the sound of Chang Minsu's panicked voice. "Hae Jae-Woo. I am so sorry. I wasn't paying attention."
Hae Jae-Woo stared at the ceiling. He was exhausted since he had gotten very little sleep. He had been far too busy thinking about the little girl in Chang Minsu's room. Hae Jae-Woo yawned. I hope they are going to be okay. When Duskin began to stir down below, Hae Jae-Woo got up and changed. If Duskin was up, it meant classes would start soon and it being Monday morning meant Hae Jae-Woo had an eight o'clock class. Hae Jae-Woo didn't bother changing into the school uniform since no one else in Nightide--excluding Dusking--followed that rule. He just dressed in his street clothes then walked down the steps. "Meet you in class at nine, Duskin," he stated before slipping out the door. He sat in class without paying attention. His mind was on Chang Minsu and why he wasn't in the room. This was the one class they had together where no one from Nightide would interfere if they spoke, and yet
Later that day, Hae Mina curled up beneath her covers. Now that Kyung Jiho knew the truth, she didn't know what to do but at least Mr. Kyong was no longer capable of controlling her. She groaned. Honestly, he could still manipulate her however he pleased. He knew her greatest secret and if he shared it, her and Hae Jae-Woo's newly built life would crumble. What about Hae Jae-Woo? Where was he? Would Mr. Kyong cause him harm? Hae Mina buried her head beneath her pillow. She heard the voices of the the others from below but ignored their words as she tried to fight her fears. Down below Jeremy and Duskin whispered to each other. "She's been acting like that all day. What do you think has her so down?" Jeremy asked as he leaned on the back of the desk chair. "I am not sure. She has not mentioned anything, but her eyes have been so distant and she looks...wounded and afraid," Duskin sighed as
Hae Mina lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling. The scene with Cass replaying in her head. She had never been kissed before, not even a peck on the lips. Cass’s lips had been warm even if she’d only felt them for a few brief seconds. Her excitement had been shattered only seconds later.Hae Mina rolled onto her side and stared at the bathroom door. Why did I expect anything from it? I knew why I was there, but if only he’d kiss me because he wanted to. No, I can’t want that. She argued with herself.I’m just like every other girl. She admitted and rolled on her back again.I fell for his charms.
“Ready?” Cass asked.“For the party? Yes. To meet your appa again? No.” The last time had been rough and she doubted she could remember everything they told him.“You’ll be fine. Appa liked you last time, so his opinion shouldn’t change as long as you stay you,” Cass assured. Hae Mina freed the rush of air.“Okay, I can do this.”“How’s your hand?” Cass questioned, but the anger that had been present earlier was now absent. Now, he sounded concerned.Hae Mina closed her fingers into a fist. A small pain hit her palm, but it didn’t hurt as much as when she had dropped the glass. “It’ll be fine, at least
Cass pulled into Hwan Chin-Sun’s drive, and Hae Mina was already opening the door before he had parked. They were late and she knew Hwan Chin-Sun was going to be furious. On top of that, Hae Mina did not want to stay too close to Cass when he was seething over her hand. She rushed up the steps and knocked on the door. Cass was soon after her. The door slid open and Hwan Chin-Sun gave a puzzled look to Hae Mina.“Hello, Jae-Woo,” she greeted.“Uh, Noona, that’s Hae Mina,” Cass informed.“Heavens, why are you dressed like Jae-Woo?” she questioned as she backed out of the way.“Long story, but to sum it up: We were in town and Hae Mina didn
“You look tired,” Cass stated after the waitress had left.“I am,” Hae Mina replied and let her eyes close. “Stupid nightmares,” she muttered.“Nightmares?” Cass questioned. Hae Mina gave an inward groan.“Yeah. Haven’t you ever had nightmares before?” Hae Mina questioned. She hoped he would not ask what they were about.“I lived with Chin-Sun Noona most of my life, so I assure you, I’m familiar with nightmares especially living ones. Was it bad?”“Was what bad?”“The dream. Was it really bad? Chin-Sun Noona used to get horrible nightmares, a
Rhee Min-Jun heard a knock and figured it must have been Hae Mina and Cass back from Hwan Chin-Sun's. He made his way downstairs then opened the door. Hae Mina gave him a soft smile. “Hey,” she whispered. She wore her boy clothes and her wig.“It’s late. Come in,” he stated and backed out of the way. Cass was nowhere to be seen. She entered the room, and he shut the door. "You should try to remember your card next time," Rhee Min-Jun muttered.“I know. I'm sorry, Sunbae. I’m so tired,” she dropped back on the bed. He fought the smile.“That’s because it’s nearly midnight and you have been up since seven. Go on and take your shower.”“I don’t want to. I&rsq
Cass thought about her comment. What was she hiding? “How’s your hand?” he asked.Hae Mina paused in her eating, “My hand?” she questioned.“Yeah, you cut your right hand, remember?”“I kind of forgot everyone knew, but it’s doing fine, so you don’t need to worry,” Hae Mina replied.“Can I check?” he asked. She sighed.“You boys are all alike,” she stated before laying her hand on the table. He lifted it and checked the side. The cut was healing well. Cass didn’t drop her hand after he had looked at the wound, instead, he examined the rest of her hand. It was so small compared to his and felt delicate, but h
Hae Mina shook her head. Cass was something else when he was being a Casanova. Something that made Hae Mina want to slap him. She thought about the little favor she was about to do for him and about what she was supposed to be. Well, she had the right to do it. Besides, she was dying to see the look on his face when she acted like she was his in such a public location. She approached the two and tapped Cass’s shoulder. He turned. “Cass, oh, who is this?” she questioned looking at the girl. The girl looked Hae Mina over with a puzzled expression.“She’s was just helping me select some food,” Cass stated.“Why didn’t you ask me? I am your girlfriend, after all, I don’t mind helping you. He’s so silly sometimes. Always having others do for us
Cass, how did I ever let you talk me into this?Hae Mina wondered as Chin-Sun tossed another dress at her. “Try it on. I don’t like the way that one fits you.”“Chin-Sun Unni,” Hae Mina complained, “this is the seventh one.”“Eighth. Now, go change. I will not send you looking like a ragdoll.” Hwan Chin-Sun turned Hae Mina around and pushed her by her back into the dressing room. Hae Mina sighed and changed again. The second Hae Mina slid the fabric on, she knew the dress was an absolute no. Hwan Chin-Sun did not know about the wound healing on her back, so she would not have realized that Hae Mina could not wear that dress; however, even if her back was completely healed, she refused to wear this dress.
A few minutes later, Hae Mina found herself sitting in the Maid’s Diner with Nightide. Kyung Jiho and Hae Mina had yet to say a word to each other or to any of the other members.“Jae-Woo, we’re here for a reason,” Rhee Min-Jun whispered. Hae Mina groaned.“I don’t want to say sorry,” she whispered back. A waitress stopped next to them and took their orders.“Kimchi with water to drink,” Duskin stated.“Cucumber Kimchi and water,” Dae-Su ordered.“I’ll take Samgyetang and Misutgaru,” Cass stated.“Chap Chae and Misutgaru,” Kyung Jiho replied.
